A good value.......2007-05-17
I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.
The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25
This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.
Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02
Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.
A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

Customer Reviews:
The year of John Powell.......2006-07-24
The talented composer's year started with Ice Age: The Meltdown; a brilliantly orchestrated combination of many instruments (not at all conventional, either!); highlighting a hilareous film with cute and sweeping melodies.
Powell was able to build off of the solid start to the series that David Newman gave it, and did not let down his fans, either. The CDs many tracks split a lot of the cues down into two or three tracks, which sometimes gets annoying, but the excellent instrumentation is always there, and it one of the best animated scores of the year and an excellent addition to Powell's amazing resume!
Good good good.......2006-04-09
Really, the whole reason I bought this CD was to listen to the Sloth Sing-a-long. I was slightly dissapointed by the short length of it, but it is still one of the most catchy and fun tunes to listen to in the whole soundtrack. I was suprised by the rest of the soundtrack, it was very full of fun and enjoyable to listen to. Many of the songs are very rich in thick harmony, and heartwarming to listen to.
Mixed feelings.......2006-04-06
First I must express my disappointment with the director for not allowing David Newman to reprise his role in Ice Age. Newman's themes fit each character well in the first film.
Sigh, nonetheless, Powell is a great composer as well . . . but he didn't reprise the themes Newman worked on. Powell pretty much started from scratch hence my mixed feelings. I love the original music and wiping the slate clean is almost like Randy Newman's "Toy Story 2" being written by someone else without the original "You Got a Friend in Me" theme.
I gave this album four stars because I did enjoy the music. (I'm rating John Powell's music as a standalone.) The music worked well for the most part in the film. It didn't detract from the picture and complemented the slap-stickiness of the film like Newman's did. The Mammoth theme is my favorite, but I find the new theme a bit annoying. Its not as strong as Powell's themes for other films. Though, Sid's sing-along is very catchy and fun and makes up for my disappointment!
Powell has written great scores for comedies and a load of cartoons, his best one being "Chicken Run". So I do recommend this score to Powell lovers and Ice Age lovers.
Still . . . I miss the original Manny and Sid themes . . .

An unfortunate CD release.......2006-07-24
While this 13-track original score is largely incomplete and (as many have commented) full of the more useless cues; stuff we could do without, there is a 34-track bootleg floating around. I don't know how to get a hold of it, but it's circulating through the internet, giving David Newman the true audio release he deserved for one of his best musical efforts.
Pointless.......2005-10-06
Why have a soundtrack that has all of the songs people don't care about? Basically this cd has all the background music that you never notice and quite frankly don't care about. Most of you who want to buy this cd is the same reason why you would buy any other, because it has one or two (very rarely three) songs that you want to get. The song that you are probably looking for is when the three of them with the baby are walking to the peak (where they ride in the ice caves) togather. It's called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Hope that helps
I LOVE ICE AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-30
I LOVE THIS MOVIE WITH A PASSION!!!! THE SOUND TRACK IS 2 TIMES AS GOOD!!!! SID STEALS THE WHOLE MOVIE, ALSO THE DODOS!!!!!!!!!!I LOOOOOVE ICE AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND YOU ALL SHOULD BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.......2004-04-30
I would like to thank everyone for listing the song Send me on my way. I was specifically looking for this song and did expect it to be on the CD. So thank you all for looking out for the other people interested.
Song not on CD.......2004-04-26
To those of you interested in this CD in lieu of finding the "songs with lyrics" in the movie ICE AGE, got bad news for you. They are NOT here! I really do hate it when a soundtrack is put out for a movie and they don't include the best or features songs in the movie. Anyway, the song that pretty much everyone wants when Manny, Sid, Diego and the baby are together and walking towards Half Peak is called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. It is on their latest album "When I Woke". Put Rusted Root in the Amazon search engine and you should find it. Hope this helps those looking for this song.

We've come to depend on Windham Hill's annual Winter Solstice collections as a relief from the glut of traditional Christmas tunes, but this double CD, Winter Solstice on Ice, slips. The soundtrack to an A&E ice skating special, the first disc follows the Winter Solstice formula, mixing original tunes inspired by the season and inventive covers of traditional Christmas fare. Brian Keane starts it off with an imagistic number called "Magic Forest," featuring the Angels of Venice, Samite, and others. The L.A. Guitar Quartet provides a novel, minimalist dissertation on "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," and Janis Ian surprises with an intimate, guitar and synth-string reading of "We Three Kings." But the second disc starts with over-the-hill R&B crooners like Jeffrey Osborne, Roberta Flack, and Peabo Bryson, then shifts into a sampler of Windham Hill artists. It has little to do with the Winter Solstice theme, even if they are among the best songs on the disc. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Crystalline Textures and Mellow Moods.......2006-12-02
From the crystalline textures of "Yesterday's Rain" to the edgy acoustic guitar in "What Child Is This," this album retains a Christmas mood, while taking you occasionally into a medieval forest. The second disc has a few more energetic selections with a bouncy "This Christmas" and then a mellow and comforting "Christmas Wish."
"The Gift" is melancholy in mood, but a beautiful love duet that is hopeful and moody. "I Wish I Could" continues the melancholy mood and then funky jazz appears to break the mood and send you into mellow smooth starscapes.
"Esawayo" displays some beautiful instrumentation with vocals from a land far away. Samite also appears again with "Stars to Shine." Both songs had me looking for more of his music.
~The Rebecca Review
I loved Winter Solstice on Ice.......2005-12-26
Maybe I liked this soundtrack best because I saw the A&E special and then purchased the CD. Having seen the skaters and the whole production on television and then when I heard the music on the CD I could picture the skaters performances. Maybe the other CDs in this series were a better compilation of music but this one holds a special place for me at Christmas time.
Half good, Half bad.......2001-12-24
To repeat the other reviews, disc one is great, disc two not so good. They should have just made a long disc one, and added some of the good instrumentals from disc 2 to 1.
Some nice selections but disapointing.......2001-12-12
This Winter Solstice is probably the most disapointing of the series. Although disc one is pretty and typical of some of the other releases, I am not particularly inspired by any selection as I have been on IV and V. DiscTwo sounds like commercial lite FM. I would have never bought this if I had known that I was getting over processed, unevolved music that I like to avoid. I will still play Disc one and even enjoy some of it, but Disc two will collect dust.
Kenny G lovers, Disc 2 is for you.......2001-12-09
Definitely not the best in the Winter's Solstice series, this is a mixed bag at best. Disc I is much like the others; if you like others in the series, you'll like these instrumental pieces. Disc 2 is disappointing; it's a collection of songs reminiscent of what you'd get on a "Light (or Lite) Hits" pop radio station. The songs are unremarkable, and the voices are a distraction. For my money, Winter's Solstice 5 is the best so far, but this does not meet that standard.
