Two phenomenons of early-'70s soul--Marvin Gaye and the soundtracks of blaxploitation flicks--met on this 1972 souvenir of the violent Robert Hooks vehicle. Unlike Curtis Mayfield's concurrent Superfly, however, Gaye's record mostly fails to rise above the clichés of film music. Save for the pained, dramatic title single and a few moments of sax-and-wah-wah strutting, much of what's here fails to touch Mayfield's song suite. That's ironic, given that Gaye bookended Trouble Man with two conceptual triumphs, What's Going On and Let's Get It On. His fans, and students of the genre, won't find this a total disappointment, but with "Trouble Man" itself available on a number of best-of CDs, it's inessential. --Rickey Wright

Yeah, the Amazon reviewer is a moron. I suggest you listen to this album. And Amazon, who the f*** is this dope? He never listened to the record. Hope he didn't get paid, since he's a fraud. This is just as good as the other albums he recommends.

5 out of 5 stars Bizarre Amazon Review.......2006-09-10

I'm with the previous reviewer, did the amazon reviewer actually listen to this?
This a fantastic record. It stands strongly with the other two mentioned.
I tracked it down for myself on cassette in the early 90's, the finally got it on vinyl - now CD. I gets better and better, upon repeated listenings, it is satisfying on so many levels - there is a real unfolding emotional intensity in this album.

Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye were on totally different orbits, just listen to any of their other works for comparison. In my opinion Mayfield, whilst catchy, went the route of James Brown for soundtracks i.e. did their usual stuff, but for soundtrack.

Soundtracks are all about incidental music too, you know! Gaye created atmosphere.

5 out of 5 stars 6 stars minimum.......2006-03-05

Marvin Gaye is one of the most gifted and visionary talents of the popular black music ever launched by Motown. Through out his disturbed music career, Marvin released plenty of great albums:
'what's going on', 'Let's get it on' and more releases, yet 'Trouble man' stands apart.

Marvin released this soundtrack in the early 70, and came out with one that ranked right alongside with Isaac Hayes in 'Shaft'.
More, this album is soul consistant from beginning to end.
Any new artist playing soul music today, Marvin Gaye's 'Trouble man' is the roots to all.

If you are into soul music and don't own 'trouble man', your music collection is missing biiiig time.

5 out of 5 stars Self-Contradicting Review By The Gentleman Under Me.......2005-03-24

I'm glad the previous reviewer called the Amazon "expert" on his disparagement of Trouble Man, but I winced when he himself put Marvin's oeuvre down (with the exception of Trouble Man). I am comforted, however, by the fact that in the self same sentence in which he dismissed Marvin's other albums, he lauded this one for the very things that make the other albums magnificent works of art. My friend, do thine self a favour and give albums like 'Here, My Dear', 'Let's Get It On', 'I Want You', 'Vulnerable' et al a good spin. You'll swallow your words. That I promise you.

5 out of 5 stars This is setup for big bands/jazz lovers alike.......2005-01-08

People called this a jazz album but some people would say "Y'know this ain't a jazz is more a funk-R&B album with less jazz". I think a lot of people shouldn't understand that this is Marvin's first doing an entire album for a blaxploitation film. I think I love this album so much (originally own it on LP but not on CD). The CD of it should wait. Like 4 instance, what if Marvin used his style as a jazz singer or a crooner leading the big bands and stuff. What if he was the next Quincy Jones, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, or whatever.

Maybe we should have jazz guru Bobby McFerrin do the part of it. I think everybody would be proud if we would've stay a little longer and made this album 33 years 2day. If ya'll like to hear more jazz like this, I recommend u should pick up Quincy Jones' Walking in Space, Grover Washington, Jr.'s The Best of Grover Washington, Jr., Jon B.'s Bonafide, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, Quincy Jones' Q's Jook Joint, Body Heat, Sounds & Stuff Like That, Common's Like Water for Chocolate, Resurrection, One Day It'll All Make Sense, Prince's Musicology, Regina Belle's Lazy Afternoon, Barry White's All-Time Greatest Hits, Ronny Jordan's The Antidote, The Roots' Things Fall Apart, The book Insatiable by Allison Hobbs and definitely some styles from Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis again, Gil Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, GRP All-Star Big Band (my favorite band of all-time), and many others u can see. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sampling of Blues Interpretations.......2004-08-25

The film `The Soul of a Man,' directed by Wim Wenders, is terrific for many reasons, and requires a review of its own. The soul of the film, certainly, was the music, and it is well (but not completely) represented in this collection. Wenders decision to use contemporary interpretations of the songs of the three blues artists of the film was an inspired one. Immediately we recognize the depth of the work by these artists by noting how well the songs work today, in a vast array of styles (and originating from such a varied group of interpreters). There are so many wonderful moments on this album, that it would be impossible to detail them all. The best that I can do is encourage as many people as I can (particularly those not typically drawn to blues music) to give this album a listen, and perhaps it will provide that little spark of inspiration to seek out more historical and contemporary blues material. All great American music starts here.

4 out of 5 stars Won't somebody tell me just what is the soul of a man?.......2004-02-17

The soundtrack to the second film in Martin Scorcese's series on the Blues explores three blues artists: Nehemiah "Skip" James, Blind Willie Johnson, and J.B. Lenoir, the latter whose use of the blues extended to protesting injustice on a larger scale, such as the race riots of the 60's ("Alabama") and even the Vietnam War. The artists covering their songs range from jazz, goth, Mexican, alternative, and blues artists. Highlights follow.

Cassandra Wilson two Lenoir songs, of which the latter's "Vietnam Blues" is my favourite from the way her dark smoky voice wraps around the words. The concern addresses the fact that the soldiers "may be killing their brothers they don't know" but there's a well-deserved rap against LBJ, "Mr. President, you always talk about peace/.../you must always clean up your house before you leave/how can you tell the world they need peace, when you still killing and mistreating on me." Someone send this part of the song to W, please. She also does the slow and melodic "Slow Down."

Lou Reed performs James' "Look Down The Road." This is an upbeat arrangement here, but the underlying message is that down that road, "I can't see nothing that ever belonged to me." The other track he does is a cover of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" performed over the end credits, and his voice mirrors Jefferson's gravelly one. He plays with the same musicians in both songs.

Nick Cave and the Dolls do a rousing version of J.B. Lenoir's "I Feel So Good" that's far from the proto-punk goth of "The Carny" or "From Her To Eternity."

"Don't Dog Your Woman" shows that Lenoir had some sensitive feelings to women, about not chaining them down in the house and letting them out so they can enjoy themselves. T. Bone Burnett and Jade Vincent do the vocal honours here.

Los Lobos shows they can do chugging blues as good as anyone else in Lenoir's "Voodoo Music." The guitar here is a standout, and utilizing a bari-sax for accompaniment is well-executed.

Lenoir was hit by a car accident and his injuries not taken seriously. He was released from the hospital and died at home in April 1967. John Mayall sings the pained "The Death of J.B. Lenoir" recorded three months after his death.

The way racist whites mistreated blacks while authority turned a blind eye is why Lenoir didn't like Alabama, and he sings as such in "Alabama" for, and asks for a Moses-like deliverance for his people.

Bonnie Raitt does a decent cover of James' "Devil Got My Woman" and Beck's cover of "I'm So Glad" is closer to James' original than Cream's electrified version. But Shemekiah Copeland's strong soulful blues voice does great justice to "God's Word."

Garland Jeffreys covers "Washington D.C. Hospital Center Blues", which Skip did based on his stay in the hospital. The refrain, done in response to the doctor and nurses asking who he is, and his getting food and bed at the hospital, he says "I'm a good man, I'm a poor man, you can understand." At one point in the song, his falsetto echoes that of Skip during his 60's comeback.

The title track by the gravelly-voiced Blind Willie Johnson backed by Willie B. Harris, is the most important and powerful song here, asking "won't somebody tell me, answer if you can/won't somebody tell me/just what is the soul of a man." He also states concisely that "a man ain't nothing but his mind." And the song of his that was included in Voyager's mission, "Dark Was The Nighht", is done here by guitarist Marc Ribot.

One of the better collections in the series despite the heavier emphasis on new cover versions rather than the originals.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Tribute to Blind Willie Johnson.......2004-02-12

I cry for Blind Willie, he didn't deserve the life he had, he didn't deserve the pain he through for years and years, he is the ultimate bluesman who died way too soon. As I write this, his songs Dark was the Night and possibly Soul of a Man are
on a gold record on the Voyager One space probe that had left the solar system sometime ago. His music will outlive him and us forever and that makes me both cry and wonder about Blind Willie for what might have been as I look toward a uncertain future. I am listening to Dark was the Night and Soul of a
Man as I write this and I feel the spirit of Blind Willie looking on as I write this special tribute about him. There was a West Wing episode recently that mentioned Blind Willie, that was really cool. Buy this CD and watch the incredible film The Soul of a Man in the Blues series soon...

5 out of 5 stars Varied, striking, mesmerizing- lightning in a bottle...........2003-10-25

I went out and bought this because some of my favorites
are represented on here BUT with something this exciting
I've found some excellent resources to seek out. I watched
this episode on PBS and I knew I had to own this collection and sure enough
it made it to the music stores. Quality music and theres really
nothing dull or repetitive about this one. So many examples of contemporary
blues weaved in with tradtional settings and even a a few
tunes from way back in the 30's. The musicanship & love and dedication to this unending musical style keeps moving along decade into decade, just close your eyes, it takes you back to another
time and place. These sets are priceless. You need to live with
these a couple weeks and give em all a chance to get under
your skin. I did and its really growing on me. From the raw acoustic blues solo training camp Bonnie Raitt puts you through("I lay down last night and I tried to get some rest")
with her right on the money, Open D take on the Skip James classic "DEVIL GOT MY WOMEN"(So timely. just listen to the aching pain and remorse and the fingerpicken, oouch!), to the gospel fever
solo gem "GOD'S WORD" from Shemekia Copeland(can this girl sing)
to Lucinda Williams excellent take on "HARD TIMES KILLING FLOOR"
another highlight, nice backing band, Lou Reed's perfect dylan
hoarse "LOOK DOWN THE ROAD", Cassandra Wilson, another voice
to reckon with on J.B. Lenoir's timely "VIETNAM BLUES" and "SLOW DOWN", LOS Lobos puts a spell on "VOODOO MUSIC" and
another favorite on this disc- T Bone Burnett's "DON'T DOG YOUR WOMEN",(New Orlean's funeral march like groove, with a Lennon'ish ghostly vocal, just excellent errie takes on this music. With contributions from Beck, Garland Jeffreys, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Jon Spencer Band this is enshrinement of top notch talents not to
be missed. Thats just ONE of many representations that has come out
from this outstanding PBS Special. Catch the blues wave. These tunes should be played on a radio station with a Program director that has some chestnuts so people can hear this music!

Saturday Night Live star Tim Meadows takes his swinger extraordinaire Leon Phelps to the big screen with the smooth and seductive moves you might expect from this loud and proud funny bigmouth. As polyester as his clothes and 'fro, the soul tunes featured either originate in the 1970s or recall them with appropriate nods to the times. For example, in a blindfold test of New Edition member Johnny Gill's cover of the 1978 Teddy Pendergrass hit "Close the Door," four out of five Gamble & Hill Philly Soul experts wouldn't be able to peg this recording to its year 2000 copyright. Soundtrack producer Marcus Miller expertly recasts the setting with the piano, strings, and groove emblematic of that era. Miller's authenticity streak continues with the instrumental music he provides throughout the movie and includes in brief sections on the album. The addition of R&B legends Al Green, Bobby Womack, the Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan make this the perfect "make-out" album for a real ladies man, or just someone who plays one on TV. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars has at least 1 BEAUTIFUL song.......2003-07-01

I haven't had the chance to listen to the entire soundtrack just yet, but I have seen the movie alot, and actually ripped the song "All This Time" from the credits at the end onto a CD. The song is too beautiful for words. It plays alot throughtout the movie but I never noticed it until I was watching it with that "special someone", and the song seemed to play louder than ever before. I'd give the song 10 stars itself, but since I haven't hear the rest of the CD, I couldn't fairly rate it. Lalah Hathaway has one of the most smooth, beautiful voices I have ever had the pleasure of hearing, and its a shame I hadn't heard anything by her until now. Now I have to go back and track all of her older works! Buying this one will definitely be the start, even if it is just for the last song.

4 out of 5 stars What's happenin' ?.......2000-10-12

Ok, so I haven't seen the movie yet, but I love the soundtrack! I'll give you a review of each song so you can be sure whether or not you want to buy it: 1.) MARCUS MILLER - All this time (intro): This is basically just a short instrumental song from the movie. It's ok, but nothing to shout about.

2.) MARCUS MILLER WITH TIM MEADOWS - "It's a lady!": Although this is probably the shortest "song" on the soundtrack, it's one of the funniest. All it is is Tim Meadows saying, "It's a lady!" while being backed up by some instrumental music.

3.) RUFUS FEATURING CHAKA KHAN - Sweet thing: This is one of my favorites. It's slightly up-beat, but slow enough to be a really pretty song.

4.) JOHNNY GILL - Close the door: It starts out sort of slow, but all in all a pretty good song. I think its a remake, but I at least know for sure that there is another version of it, so if you recognize the title, its probably the song you're thinking of.

5.) ISLEY BROTHERS - Don't let me be lonely tonight: This song is ok, but I usually skip it because I think its too slow.

6.) MARCUS MILLER - Have you ever had sex?: This is another instrumental song from the movie. It's pretty good, but the title is the best part.

7.) ROBERTA FLACK AND DONNY HATHAWAY - The closer I get to you: I like this song a lot. It's a pretty song, plus the two singers' voices go well together.

8.) ISLEY BROTHERS - That lady: I like this song, too. It's a nice, upbeat song that has good lyrics (even though their repetitive) and a nice melody.

9.) GROVER WASHINGTON, JR. - Mister magic: It's an instrumental. I like this song. The only thing I don't like about it is that its a bit long.

10.) TEDDY PENDERGRASS - Turn off the lights: An ok song, but a bit slow for my taste.

11.) MARCUS MILLER - Houseboat bonin': A 15 second "song". Its ok, but not much of a song if you ask me.

12.) AL GREEN - Let's stay together: I like this song. Kind of upbeat, and really pretty.

13.) MARCUS MILLER WITH TIM MEADOWS - Leon's poem: This song is the number one reason to buy the cd! It is extremely funny! Not to give away anything, but my favorite line is: "Is not love not unlike the unlikely not it is unliken to?"

14.) BOBBY WOMACK - Lookin' for a love: A really nice upbeat song that I like a lot.

15.) MARCUS MILLER - Radio waves: This is just another waste of space with some instrumental music.

16.) WILLIE HUTCH - I choose you: Another good song on the cd. Just one of those songs that are fun to listen to.

17.) MARCUS MILLER - An old school love: A really good song by Marcus Miller that actually has some lyrics.

18.) PARLIAMENT - Up for the down stroke: I like this song a lot. It's a catchy song with a good beat.

19.) LALAH HATHAWAY WITH MARCUS MILLER - All this time (vocal version): A bit slow, but good enough to listen to.

All in all this is a good cd. So go out and buy it!

This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06

I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.

4 out of 5 stars Good for fans.......2006-01-18

Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.

2 out of 5 stars It's at today missing for me........2006-01-15

I am waiting this CD in my home. At today it's missing. Take note of this, please.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13

I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!

5 out of 5 stars Millie At Her Finest (and this is NOT the Soundtrack) .......2005-07-20

This STUDIO album is beyond a doubt Millie's finest album, with Caught Up and Still Caught Up a close second and third. Further this CD is NOT the soundtrack to Young Man, Older Women, that is a SEPERATE CD, that was released in the LATE-90's after she took the stage presentation on the road, and the soundtrack has a number of different songs.

Millie takes old-school R & B to an art-form on this release, and the tracks not to miss include; "Taking Your Life Back", "I'm Living With A Stranger" and the hauntingly beautiful "Is It Ever As You Dream", the title track talks about the forbidden fruit of a Young Man, much in the way that Mille talked years earlier about the forbidden fruit of a married man.

If you ever wondered if Millie could really sing (as opposed to talking up a blue-streak), you owe it to yourself to but this CD.

Millie is a one of a kind teasure, that more people need to treat themselves to.

5 out of 5 stars They have been talking about that Jackson Lady for years..........2004-02-07

....Millie Jackson, that is. The real deal diva of everyday ghetto drama. When you go to one of her concerts, put on your seatbelts, it's gonna be a wild ride. She has been provoking all sorts of audiences for a long time. No one's complained about it, though. As far as I know, she keeps packing them in...

Here is the so called original soundtrack to her play Young Man, Older Woman. Actually though it is a collection of the musical numbers done in studio. In my opinion it is one of Millie J's more fully developed concept album since leaving her longtime label Spring and winding up on Jive Records...hey! Ain't that where N Sync and R Kelly reside? Anyway, the best cuts here are the perfect Millie J vehicle "When Are Gonna Tell Your Woman About Me?", the triumphant "Taking My Life Back" and the deliciously naughty title track. On "When Are You..." an unusually willing to compromise Millie asks her fiance to tell the lady he's shacking with to give the 411 about Millie, but the guy won't leave cuz the Shacking Up Lady's got issues. Riiight. Do you think the Millie of yore would put up wid that nonsense? Do you think Millie in *this* product does? "For years I refused to date married men. This **** is worse", she says. Anyhoo, I took my copy of YMOW out for a ride the other day and find I still enjoy the heck of it. I shoulda played it during SB04 half time instead of watching that mess....

5 out of 5 stars AS GOOD AS IT GETS !!!.......2002-05-27

Unlike her 1989 album " BACK TO THE...", which was very sucsessful, this set was not a big sucsess. As we all know 1990/1991 was not a time that r&b/soul was apreciated.URBAN/DANCE-POP and NEW JACK SWING was all the rage at the time. This is an album is so excellent but so underrated. She shines on every track but my favourates are: YOUNG MAN,OLDER WOMAN, TAKING MY LIFE BACK, IF U WANT 2, LOVE DON'T HAVE TO HURT, ARE YOU UP TO IT and LOVE IS ON IT'S WAY. If you love r&b/soul, I urge you to go and buy this album .You don't be disappointed...

excellent service - it was a very speedy delivery on an album you cannot get hold off in the UK.

3 out of 5 stars I only listen to Eek-ah-bo-Static Automatic.......2003-05-12

I only gave it three stars because the only things I've listened to are "Love & Affection," and "Eek-ah-bo-Static Automatic" because both feature some of the last recorded performances by Sly Stone. Eek-ah-bo-Static Automatic is a good clue as to what a comeback by Sly Stone might sound like; it is solid phuture-phunk, with nice electronic falsetto towards the end. It is dissapointing that this is all there is, however. Sly lives!

    5 out of 5 stars American Jewish folk-rock blues.......2003-10-01

If I were to classify this album, I would call it "American Jewish folk-rock blues." If that sounds eclectic, well, so is the CD. "Rebbe Soul-O" is a daring creative experiment. Subtitled "a one man musical journey" (solo, soul-O, get it?), the CD is a "musical play" that should be listened to in a quiet mood, from beginning to end. (Amazon lists this as a "soundtrack," so I assume it was/is performed on stage somewhere. The CD was produced in California.)

As the title suggests, vocalist Bruce Berger does indeed sing solo, but there are plenty of good musicians backing him up, so it's not exactly a one-man show. Their sound is an interesting mix of traditional Jewish tunes and original material, with instruments ranging from synthesizers to acoustic guitars and drums, to wind chimes, crickets, and ocean waves. I especially like "Song of Angels," which is really a poem recited to background music, and the contemplative rendition of Rebbe Nachman's "Narrow Bridge." My least favorite piece is "Turn me on, Sister Sarah," which is a bit too sexually suggestive for my Orthodox tastes (although he does marry Sarah in the end). However, if this song represents the beginning of a journey from secular to sacred, then it fits as the opening number for the play. This is not just "one man's journey," it's the quest of many American Jews to find a "sound" that bridges the Old World and the New -- not just in music, but in life itself.

5 out of 5 stars Unlike anything else you're likely to encounter.......2003-01-05

The Brits have a weird jazz esthetic happening.

Take Steve Beresford, for example. Founding member of the Melody Four (which, oddly, contained only three members, himself, Lol Coxhill, and Tony Coe), practitioneer of a highly manered musical sensibility residing somewhere between jazz and nostalgic popular music, avant weirdo--not someone I'd ordinarily look to to produce accessible jazz--he has come up with a musical esthetic that is at once unique and listenable in his two CUE SHEETS discs.

The second one strikes me as the better of the lot. Especially the first cut, "Soul Patrol," will resonate easily with any number of listeners: pop afficionados, jazz esthetes, classical refugees looking for something a little bit more exciting than the latest regurgitation of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusic," disaffected Celene Dion boosters, Falco Jimenez devotees, stranded in some Tex-Mex Purgatory.

But it doesn't stop there. Astonishingly, each subsequent cut stakes out magical new territory, wafting the listener into some world-jazz esthetic uniquely the product of Mr. Beresford's teeming imagingation, touching on such musical vistas as East Indian ("Sari and Trainers"), avant-New Age ("Paris, Brixton"), New Music ("Watermark," featuring Hans Reichel on his own invented instrument, the daxaphone, my personal favorite), and jazz-elegiac ("Going Going," a minute and 13 seconds of pure magic).

It seems that the edges of musics is where the real thing is happening: And that is certainly so with this marvelous and revelatory disc.
