Informed by a challenging performance by Gwyneth Paltrow in the title role, director Christine Jeffs biopic chronicles the relationship between English poet Ted Hughes and the brilliant, if doomed writer Sylvia Plath, author of the seminal The Bell Jar. Veteran composer Gabriel Yared excels at detailing the often difficult interior lives of the film's characters with music that can be as subtle and warm as it is bittersweet, often using spare piano and string arrangements to evoke Plath's delicate state of mind and the emotional turmoil that follows in its wake. There are moments of romantic brightness early on, but Yared's score seems to follow the arc of Plath's own emotional and mental travails, seasoned with gently discordant piano notes and haunting string passages that increasingly hint at Plath's fascination with death and the ultimate tragedy it foreshadowed. James Horner covered similar thematic territory in his score to A Beautiful Mind, but Yared's music here often seems warmer, more human-scaled -- and ultimately more tragically compelling. --Jerry McCulley

Michael Flatley's Celtic Tiger.......2007-01-10
Very disappointing - Nothing like Riverdance Would not recommend and I am avid fan
If you love music, buy this CD! Very refreshing, and new, with great music!.......2006-01-21
After listening to the soundtrack of Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and Feet of Flames, Celtic Tiger is in some ways the "same old music", but in other ways, very different and original and seems to have something that the previous three soundtracks lack. This CD doesn't just give you modern Celtic music; it goes through all of the stages of music in our time, from Celtic, classical, hip-hop, jazz, rock, pop etc. As the CD progresses, the music goes from soft and traditional to more modern, and more diverse as it explores different genres of music. So, contrary to what someone said, Celtic Tiger isn't what you would expect and it's not what you heard before. In fact, I was planning on not buying it, after seeing how it wasn't going to be another Lord of the Dance. This CD is like the others, but for the most part, stands from the others.
To give you a better idea, here's a breakdown by song:
ST. PATRICK (ANGULUS): Remember how in the past, there would be one song on the CDs mentioned above, that was sung in another language (for example, Shivna in Riverdance, High Priests and Hell's Kitchen in Feet of Flames, and the chorus to Sula Ruin in Lord of the Dance)? Well, here's your song for Celtic Tiger. This song is not sung in the English language(I'm positive it's Latin). When translated, you will see that the song has a religious theme to it(in the show, Celtic Tiger, the song was about the beginning of Roman Catholicism in Ireland). The song is also very dark, and sounds gothic but it's pretty good. It sends chills down your spine.
THE VIKINGS: This song, like a lot of the other songs on here, starts off slow and calm, and then as it progresses gets stronger and stronger till it hits a climax. In this song, they use the same tune over and over again for about 75% of the song, and the tune gets stronger and stronger as time passes (get it?). This works well with this song, and this is one of my personal favorites on the CD.
THE GARDEN OF EDEN: Now this is my favorite song on here. Now, that's something unusual for me to say, since I usually don't care for the slower songs. But I really do love this song, it sort of reminds me of Celtic Dream from LOTD. It's sort of a meditation song. How do I describe this song? Well, if there's a song that plays in Heaven, then the song would probably sound kind of like this.
THE REDCOATS: Another personal favorite, starting with drums, and then the rest of the song is Michael Flatley on flute along with many other instruments (the violin, fiddle, drum, bell, and even piano). The beginning is very sweet, but the end is very energetic.
THE FAMINE: Another vocal in another language (I'm guessing...Gaelic?). Once again, when translated, there is some religious theme in the song. The emotions that you find in the song is desperation, sadness and fear so it's another song on the darker side.
THE BANSHEE/A NATION ONCE AGAIN: This is a very confusing little song. The first part of the song, it's just a woman crying--like a banshee. ( Yes, this song is one of the weaker ones. In fact I would go as far as to say that the CD wouldn't suffer if this song was taken out). And THEN, three minutes into the song, they start singing "A Naaaaation Oooonce Agaaaain!" Very, confusing, and very random, since the vocal just came out of nowhere. But, it did help the song.
FREEDOM: Now this song is the beginning of the "modern songs" on here. But I have to warn you: this song is pretty....random. First it starts off with a nice, soft fiddle tune and then out of nowhere, it's replaced with this disco, 70's-type music, and then once again, it's randomly replaced with this strip tease tune. Yes, this song is indeed very random, and...amusing.
A NEW WORLD: Another song that explores different types of music besides Celtic. You will listen to flamenco music, jazz, hip-hop, ballet and ballroom music, and then finally, the song will finish with this poppish Celtic tune that is very enjoyable to listen to.
THE LAST ROSE: This is another song with Flately on flute. The song sounds very sad, light, soft, and it reminds me of Whispering Wind from Feet of Flames. It's a beautiful song, but there's one problem: this song is very ill placed in the sequence of tracks on this CD. The song doesn't fit in at all and kind of throws you off, leaving you a little confused.
CELTIC KITTENS: What a cute title for an equally lovely song! It's a mix of Celtic violin and this modern poppish dance beat and the results are very good. It's another personal favorite and don't be surprised if you find yourself dancing to it.
CAPONE: This is another personal favorite. Completely straying away from being anything that has to do with Celtic music, this is, for the most part, a jazz number. It's...cool, and sexy, and fast and almost perfect.
CELTIC TIGER: This song finishes the CD, with electic guitar with tapping feet in the background. It's very energetic, and for the most part, pretty good.
In conclusion: I was left with very little disappointments! Surprisesm yes (from all of the random songs) but for the most part, I don't regret buying this CD! If you're a person who's as passionate about music as I am, then I recommend you get this CD. You'll love it.
Michael Flatley.......2006-01-19
I love anything Michael Flatley does he is the best Irish dancer in the whole wide world. He was born to dance. He has made my dreams come true by coming back to dance.
Celtic Tiger show and soundtrack.......2006-01-19
This was the best show i have ever seen plus a fantastic soundtrack.THE BEST PART WAS I ACTUALLY GOT TO SEE MICHAEL FLATLEY LIVE WHICH HAS BEEN MY DREAM SINCE FOREVER!!!!!!!! I'm an irish dancer and would love to be in this show when i'm old enough!!!!
Cant always toe TAP.......2005-12-21
I just want to say that this show, like his previous, is AMAZING.
And the soundtrack is the same. For most of you reviewers before me, who rated this low, I ask why ? If you just like rhythmic toe tapping then i agree, this is not for you, but how can M Flatley have a non stop irish gig? This show deals with the struggles, and many deaths of the Irish people. So i ask, how can he be upbeat and smiling the whole show ? If you just want to see tap dance for 2 hours, please, do look elsewhere.
But if you want QUALITY and have ANY interest in TRUE Irish heritage, and history, you will love this CD.
If you just want to see Irish dancers flailing about, go see RIVERDANCE, or any of the "Other Up and comers". And when the Dust settles, it will be Michael Flatley creating that dust,
and working on ANOTHER great project.

Better than average score in this flop musical.......2007-01-11
Broadway: 1958
Among the musical shows playing are MY FAIR LADY, THE MUSIC MAN, WEST SIDE STORY, FLOWER DRUM SONG and ... WHOOP-UP!
WHOOP-UP has to have one of the stupidest books ever to reach Broadway and it sank in a sea of red ink after 65 performances.
M-g-M records made the original cast disc, in both mono and stereo formats, n January 9, 1959. By the time the records got into stores WHOOP-UP had closed and the Lp was soon deleted. For many years it was an elusive item costing collectors anywhere from $75-$150.
In 1988 Polydor re-released it on Lp, CD and Cassette. The reissue was a labour of love for Larry Lash whose hilarious liner notes are alone worth the price. In addition to the full cast album the Cd includes 10 bonus tracks by the likes of Connie Francis (her single of "Love Eyes"); Rosemary Clooney (two selections from her 4-track EP of songs from the show); Maurice Chevalier (a truly odd-ball single of "Nobody Throw Those Bull"); Dick Hyman (a scintillating jazz version of "When the Tall Man talks") and a couple of demos from Moose Charlap (including the song "I'm on my Way" cut before the New York opening.)
The score is quite pleasant and any show that features Susan Johnson is guaranteed to have some worthwhile moments. While it will never be revived or even brought back in concert form, this CD is worth tracking down. Do not pay obscene amounts for it: It isn't that kind of classic, and there is always a chance Decca Broadway may reissue it.

lush, atmospheric.......2004-01-07
A moody, atmospheric score by Gabriel Yared to accompany the woeful "Mental Illness Lite" treatment in the 2003 Plath biopic. Yared's beautiful main theme and accompanying cuts are far superior to his concurrent Cold Mountain background score. A winner that unfortunately will be overlooked because of higher-profile Cold Mountain as well as this misguided filmed attempt at seriousness.

For Danny Kaye Fans.......2000-11-28
This CD has the music from my two favorite Danny Kaye films. I think any Danny Kaye fan would love this. The CD sound quality is about as good as any old record album (in other words, it's not digitally recorded) but considering the age of the films, it is really remarkable. I spent a long time looking at Danny Kaye cd song lists ("best of"s and so on) and found that these movie song tracks really covered many of the songs I remember. Listening to this cd I could picture the movies, and the memories of the Court Jester scene, when Mr. Kaye was actually pretending to be a jester made me laugh out loud. Of course the Inch worm song and the Emperors new clothes songs brought back those childhood stories in a very poignant way. I would recommend this for all Danny Kaye fans.

fine musical penned by Noel Coward.......2004-08-15
ACE OF CLUBS is a relatively-obscure 1950 offering from Noel Coward, which ran for a decent 211 performances. The cast includes Pat Kirkwood (WONDERFUL TOWN, CHRYSANTHEMUM), as well as Graham Payn, Sylvia Cecil and Peter Tuddenham, and the ensemble cast includes a few who would become big stars in the future (Jean Carson, June Whitfield and Susan Swinford). The score is average (this is surprising considering that Coward was no slouch in the melody department), though delights include "Nothing Can Last Forever", "I'd Never, Never Know", "My Kind of Man", "Chase Me, Charlie" and "Why Does Love Get in the Way?". Coward also has a number about Napoleon's "Josephine" which pre-dates Cole Porter's SILK STOCKINGS "Josephine" number by about 5 years! ACE OF CLUBS is a good (but not essential) addition to your cast album collection.

Unlike anything else you're likely to encounter.......2003-01-05
The Brits have a weird jazz esthetic happening.
Take Steve Beresford, for example. Founding member of the Melody Four (which, oddly, contained only three members, himself, Lol Coxhill, and Tony Coe), practitioneer of a highly manered musical sensibility residing somewhere between jazz and nostalgic popular music, avant weirdo--not someone I'd ordinarily look to to produce accessible jazz--he has come up with a musical esthetic that is at once unique and listenable in his two CUE SHEETS discs.
The second one strikes me as the better of the lot. Especially the first cut, "Soul Patrol," will resonate easily with any number of listeners: pop afficionados, jazz esthetes, classical refugees looking for something a little bit more exciting than the latest regurgitation of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusic," disaffected Celene Dion boosters, Falco Jimenez devotees, stranded in some Tex-Mex Purgatory.
But it doesn't stop there. Astonishingly, each subsequent cut stakes out magical new territory, wafting the listener into some world-jazz esthetic uniquely the product of Mr. Beresford's teeming imagingation, touching on such musical vistas as East Indian ("Sari and Trainers"), avant-New Age ("Paris, Brixton"), New Music ("Watermark," featuring Hans Reichel on his own invented instrument, the daxaphone, my personal favorite), and jazz-elegiac ("Going Going," a minute and 13 seconds of pure magic).
It seems that the edges of musics is where the real thing is happening: And that is certainly so with this marvelous and revelatory disc.
