5 out of 5 stars The Rocky Horror Show: Original Roxy Cast (1974 Los Angeles Cast).......2006-09-13

Having been exposed to the original Roxy cast version at about 12 by my mom (who actually saw the play 8 times at the Roxy. . . amazing) I have been a RH ran for virtually all my life. Hands down this version is the best musically. I'm reading some of the other reviews that slam this version as being less musical and poorly arranged. R U F'N CRZEE????? The Roxy v. has WAAAY more musicality from guitars to piano and horns, not to mention having all of the original script actually sung. . . and not spoken. The vocal lines are so much more dynamic and lyrically sung than the movie. For the recrord. . I LOVE THE MOVIE ! !! I went for years to the Tiffani in Hollywood on Saturday nights and saw the midnight showing. Those of you in LA know what I'm talking about. SOOOO COOOOOOLLLL SO I'm not here to bash just to illuminate a diff point of view to some of the other reveiews. Listen to them all and decide for yourself. For me. . .this one is just a step to the left ! !

When you compare the gritty original 1973 London Cast recording to this pulled together, yet equally gritty 1974 roxy cast, you can't help but get a tear in your eye, seeing you're, and so many other Rockyheads, baby all grown up, and doing just fine.

So much was improved upon it's almost perverse!

Considering this was the second Rocky recording of it's day, it was exciting to get all of the songs , save Science Fiction Double Feature Reprise, whichf or whatever reason was cut. Not only that but you get a great cast. Tim Curry returns for his definitive Frank which has a rawer edge in this recording, and the supportig cast wonderfully fills some shoes, especially Bruce Scott as Riff-Raff, who proves you don't have to be Richard O'Brien to take Tim Curry prisoner.

And Meatloaf as Eddie AND Dr.Scott? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?! He's fantastic! This dual role should have been carried over to the film version it's simply incredible!

I'm having Joygasms just thinking about this album. cracking, extreme, great, massive, monstrous, monumental, overwhelming, prodigious, severe, stupendous, towering, tremendous, best, best ever, cat's meow, delicious, excellent, far out, first-class, first-rate, like wow, marvelous, primo, sensational, superb, unreal, admirable, amazing, astonishing, astounding, awe-inspiring, awesome, brilliant, cool, divine, dynamite, enjoyable, excellent, extraordinary, fabulous, fantastic, fine, groovy, incredible, magnificent, marvelous, miraculous, outstanding, peachy, phenomenal, pleasant, pleasing, prime, remarkable, sensational, something else, staggering, startling, strange, stupendous, super, superb, surprising, swell, terrific, too much, tremendous, unheard-of, wondrous, ace, attractive, best ever, cat's pajamas, choice, commendable, cool, copacetic, crack, crackerjack, daisy, deadly, deserving, dilly, doozie, dream, estimable, excellent, exquisite, fine, gnarly, good, great, greatest, groovy, heavy, hunky dory, keen, laudable, mean, meritable, meritorious, neat, peachy, praiseworthy, rare, smashing, solid, spiffy, super, super-duper, superior, unreal, valuable, wicked, wonderful, worthy, amazing, astounding, bewildering, breathtaking, extraordinary, impressive, marvelous, miraculous, spectacular, staggering, startling, striking, stunning, stupefying, stupendous, wonderful, wondrous and anything else the Thesarus has to offer!

5 out of 5 stars How I came upon the 1974 Roxy cast.......2005-10-31

I got this one by mistake, although I loved it. The magenta(Jamie donnely) played Jan in the movie Grease. Bruce scott was an excellent Riff-Raff. Abigale hanness is not a singer. She dosen't sing she screeches. Tim curry of course was wxcellent as usual. Meatloaf is still and will allways be Eddie the ex delivry boy. This recording is great, but the cover that I got for it is different from the one amazon.com is advertising. The one that I have has a scared Colombia screaming. This cover is actually the re-issue cover of the cd because this cd was re-issued just like the movie soundtrack.Rember the movie soundtrack the first time it came out,it had everybody's faces on it but hen the re-issue came out and it just had Frank sitting on the lips. If you look clossly on the re-issue of the movie sondtrack you can see Colombia,Rocky,Frank,Brad,And Janet.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the movie sdtk, but does have Kim Milford.......2005-09-30

FIRST OF ALL- AMAZON HAS THE WRONG COVER PHOTO FOR THIS ALBUM. THE CORRECT ROXY COVER HAS AN ILLUSTRATION OF COLUMBIA'S HEAD (NOT LIPS!!!)...Anyhow, if I had to choose between this Roxy recording and the movie soundtrack- I'd pick the movie soundtrack. The arrangements on the Picture Show sdtk are better, Richard O'Brien is riff-raff, the songs are tighter, it's just better overall. HOWEVER, the reason I purchased the Roxy version was to get Kim Milford's version of "sword of damacles" (the song isn't on the movie sdtk). Why didn't they put Kim Milford in the movie version?? (God rest your soul, Kim). The guy they used in the movie couldn't even sing- they had to dub his voice!? Anyhow, the Roxy version also has a pretty good version of "planet shmanet janet" which also isn't on the movie sdtk. But to me, the movie sdtk is the DEFINITIVE recording.

5 out of 5 stars The best and only one you need........2005-04-05

This is so superior to the film Soundtrack it's almost crimminal.
One playing of Time Warp will sell you on this.

I always thought the film was terribly made, but it's also terribly second rate musically.

This is the only authentic theatrical rendition of RHS as it was originally intended. There is none of the 'belting it out' of the Roxy version, and later versions lack subtlety and drama.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible,terrible,terrible.......2005-10-30

I'm a RHPS fan, but this cd lacks that true rhps quality. Tim curry,Richard o'brien,Patrcia quinn, and little nell were all better in the movie. There were 5 people in the band and all of them in this recording have bad voices as in the movie they have better voices.

5 out of 5 stars "Raw"cky Horror.......2005-08-20

For whatever reason the original 1973 London Cast is my favorite recording of The Rocky Horror Show. When you think about that Cast Recording, infamously recorded in one day, is truely horrendous. The orchestrations are amteurish, and the performers are more enthusiastic then trained, but it's just fun, and I take it over any polsihed and finetuned or even complete recording ( a staple for me when it comes to cast recordings) anyday.

However, all that aside, I think the reason I like it so much is because it has, for the most part, the cast which I'm glad to call definitive. That would be Tim Curry as Frank, Richard O'Brien as Riff Raff, Pat Quinn as Magenta, and Little Nell as Columbia, and having John Adams as The Narrator dosen't hurt either (he's fantastic). I was first introduced to that lot in those roles when I saw the film, and I suppose I find comfort in that they were all equally represented in their roles on stage, from the begining.

The quality of it all really adds to the experience for me though. Somethign about small scale Off*13 Broadway productions always gave me chills of excitement, the idea of a band of nobodies coming together to put on a show with little or no budget but a lot of spunk and that's what this cast has - spunk. I true, raw understanding of it all, and I love it.

3 out of 5 stars Classic, Great Gift For Any Rocky Fan.......2005-07-05

This is a great CD, if you like and understand musicals, especialy if you have seen and fell in love with The Rocky Horror Show. It's also a great gift for fans of Tim Curry, like me :). Yes, the movie sound track does rock out better, and if you're a fan of the movie more than the show than yu'd like the movie soundtrack better, but if you're a hardcore fan of Rocky, then this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars ROCKY HORROR IN THE FLESH!!!!.......2005-04-30

This is where it all started, kids. Tim Curry in his first version of the role of Frank N Furter . Believe it or not, Frank N Furter was BLONDE for the stage role in London! It sounds so cheezy, yet you want more of it. The music itself is even more low budget than the film, but its just enough for the london stage to make it absolutely fabulous. SCIENCE FICTON/DOUBLE FEATURE is better here. Much faster and more upbeat with Little Nell singing it in a different tone....

I would give anything to see video of the original london cast in action. Its the beginning, of a cult classic. Other Rising star in this, Christopher Malcolm, who later plays Saffron's Father on BBC's "Absolutely Fabulous"

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful for every Rocky enthusiast!.......2007-06-21

For everyone that loves to do the Time Warp, this is a great CD. Granted, this is not the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack, but it is the soundtrack to the London play written and starring Richard O'Brien which inspired the great cult-classic movie. Tim Curry does sound a little different than the movie, but only because he was 2 years younger, and also movies sound different than open theaters. Hot Patootie is not done by Meatloaf, only because this soundtrack was made before the Rocky Horror craze was introduced to America. All in all, I think this is a great album for Rocky Horror aficionados and collectors. For those of you that only know and like the movie, this album is not for you.

4 out of 5 stars I think this is a good cd.......2005-01-08

I think this cd is pretty good. The buyer should be aware though that this isn't the movie soundtrack, so they shouldn't expect the songs to sound exactly like the movie. To me, this is sort of like buying a live album of a rock band. Some people want the live versions to sound exactly like the studio version, so if you're one of those people, this may not be for you.
I actually think that some of these versions may be better than the movie version. I really like Riff Raff's version of "Science Fiction-Double Feature", but Magenta's version on this cd sounds really creepy, which I think is kind of cool. Also, while no one will top Meat Loaf's "Hot Patootie", the version on this is pretty good, and sounds like a fifties Greece type song.
The singers definitly don't sound like they've had much vocal training, but it is bearable. There is also a song called "Once in a While" on this that isn't on the movie version. This song though is so-so in my opinion. And there is actually an extra verse sung by Brad on "Frankenstein Place". Just thought I'd mention that too.
So, basically what I'm trying to say is that it is a good cd, but be aware that this is different from the movie soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Fun... Not For Every RHPS Fan, Though.......2003-03-24

I have to admit, I liked the movie soundtrack before I bought this. This did seem a little rough at first... but it is a lot more fun for me. It sounds vry tinny, and some of the voices are a little rough... Tim Curry sounds a little different, but is up to his usual excellent standards. It's more like three-and-a-half, leaning more towards four, because it's just campier. The songs, in their original form, are a bit more true to the original idea and structure: in the liner notes, it is outlined that the musical was originally an idea to preserve the music of the sixties. The songs are a lot more upbeat, and one gets a better sense of character (especially from Rocky and his effeminate cries).

4 out of 5 stars Contrary to what the title says..........2003-01-23

This is not the sound track to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is the Original Cast Recording from the Rocky Horror Show performed in London's Theatre Upstairs. The stage show is what the international smash-hit RHPS was based off of.

2 out of 5 stars Sweet Trans... dear lord make it end........2002-09-28

I was unfortunate enough to listen to this CD during a lunch break at school... I almost cried. That's how horrible I, and my other RHPS enthusiasts, believed it to be. Be forewarned! It's done improperly, making it sound utterly horrid and NOTHING like any version of RHPS should be. I was angered by this... Grrrr... I LOVE the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but you have to do it right or just not even attempt it at all. The singers were not in any specific character, sounded overly choral, and was just utterly... wrong. *tear* So sad. The only reason why I even gave it two stars is just because it's the RHPS. They get minimal credit for at least attempting, even though they killed it.

Oh yes, I do understand that these people are not the original cast and are expected to sound different... but DIFFERENT is not the same thing as unbearable.

      Album Description

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE Definitive recording of this musical.......2005-02-25

The Rocky Horror Show - not The Rocky Horror Picture Show (that's a film, folks, not a live musical)- is the best recording of this whacky and fun musical. It doesn't have the same cast as the film (though Tim Curry and Meatloaf are in it). So what makes it better? I'll tell you.

Rocky Horror is a visceral experience. Even though the film was widely panned by the press and the public upon its release, it was a much slicker version of the stage musical. Songs were rewritten. Dialogue was gussied up. Costumes were more professional. Sets were much more detailed and static. The experience of the live show was necessarily changed - no usherette - just lips.

The film stands on its own as a hugely wonderful experience. However, it is a different experience than the musical. But that could be said of every one of the live versions when compared to the film. So let's not use the film as a comparison...

The Roxy Cast of RHS is just awesome. It's a little honky tonky in the music provided. Janet is more raspy and less delicate than most other versions of her. Tim Curry has never sounded better. Meatloaf plays both Dr. Scott and Eddie (which is typically the case in the live show). Kim Milford as Rocky gives us a more truly 1970's version of what a hunk was - and he sings exceedingly well (he was the lead singer for the Jeff Beck group for quite a while). Then there's the really emotional numbers like "Once in a While" and "Superstars". Those two will rip your guts out with the sheer emotion. In fact, that's probably what sets this version apart from all others. So many people know RHS for what it became, but when this cast took it up, it was brand new to the U.S. and you had some really awesome stage actors adding real emotional input to the roles, music included.

Get this soundtrack -because it is THE defnitive recording of the show! You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Heresy, but the singing on this cast album is even better.......2004-05-23

I originally picked up the original cast recording of "The Rocky Horror Show" when I got the four-CD set that had this, the soundtrack for "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Rocky Horror International: A Collection of Rocky Horror Tracks from Around the World," and "Songs from the Vaults: A Collection of Rocky Horror Rarities." If you have not heard the Mexican Cast singing "Un Relato Bien Extrano y Muy Pasado" or the Norwegian Cast doing "Alltid Lys Hos Frankenstein," not to mention Little Nell's "See You Round Like a Record" or Tim Curry's "Just," then you need to track these down. But this one will be the easiest to find besides the film soundtrack.

Tim Curry plays Frank N. Furter while Meatloaf does double duty as both Eddie and Dr. Scott, which means you get a nicely sung version of "Eddie's Teddy." Those who had the movie memorized long before they get to this album will be surprised to see that "Sweet Transvestite" comes before "Tim Warp," and that Brad (Bill Miller) has a really great song called "Once in a While." This would be his counterpart to "Toucha Toucha Touch Me" by Janet (Abigale Haness) and my favorite song on the album (Barry Bostwick did record it for the movie and it appears on "Rocky Horror International," but it is not half as good as Miller's version).

This is a high energy production and you can tell from the moment Jamie Donnelly, who plays Magenta, starts ripping through "Science Fiction/Double Feature." This continues through "Dammit Janet" and "Over at the Frankenstein Place." Fans of the film will also be happy to find versions of "Planet Schmanet Janet" and "Hot Dog/Frankfurter," which provides all the narrative links between "Eddie's Teddy" and "Rose Tint My World." At the end Brad, Janet and the Company sing "Superheroes." The rest of the Roxy cast consists of Bruce Scott as Riff Raff, Boni Enten as Columbia, Kim Milford as Rocky, and Graham Jarvis as the narrator.

I know it might be heresy, but in terms of the people doing the signing and wanting to sing along, I actually like "The Rocky Horror Show" cast album a bit better than "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" soundtrack album. With regards to the later, I would rather watch the film and sing along (while throwing toast and ringing a bell).

5 out of 5 stars Just as good the second time 'round (like a record).......2002-04-06

This is the second most complete and comprehensive Rocky collection I've ever seen - and I've got them all, even the dogs. Whether you're a new or seasoned fan of the Show, this is THE collection to add to your own.

I was surprised though, to see it without real changes from the first time it was released - on the 15th anniversary in 1990. I've got my nicely boxed set right here, and it's a nearly identical (except for packaging, of course) line-up. Alas, perhaps Ode Records really has no 'lost' recordings left in the vault.

It's nice to have this collection on two discs in a slim double case, much more portable that the original four discs (RHPS Original Soundtrack, Songs From The Vaults, RH International; plus the Original Roxy Cast album which is not included here). Now I can retire my ten year old originals and travel a bit lighter.

I'd certainly recommend the 1990 box to anyone, but since it's been out of print for over a decade, this is a must-have runner-up. Get this, the Audience Par-tic-i-pation album (1983), Sing It! (1995), the Roxy cast album (1974), the New Broadway cast album (2001), any other theater albums you can find, and steer clear of all the other rehashes of the Picture Show album.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Rocky Horror Audio Buffet!.......2001-04-27

I've encountered and sampled so many Rocky Horror audio & video that offer up bonus tracks, audience participation, never seen before footage, etc..... this particular CD ranks shoulder to shoulder with the recent DVD release of RHPS as the greatest Rocky Horror platter for your consumer dollar!

This 2 CD set really gives an amazing smorgasbord of Rocky Horror listening treats. We get generous doses of the film and Roxy soundtracks that so many Rocky fanatics are familiar with, as well as samplings from other stage soundtracks like the Mexican cast ("Toca! Toca Toca!" is a fabulous Spanish take on "Touch A Touch A Touch Me!"), The Norwegian Cast (you MUST hear these!), and the New Zealand Cast.

If that's not enough fun, we get to hear the film versions of "The Sword of Damocles" and "Once in a While" (to my knowledge, these haven't been released on previous commercial soundtracks). Other film feature fun we get to listen to includes a small sampling of the audience participation album with "Eddie's Teddy," two RHPS radio spots, and one theatrical trailer.

I'm one of those RHPS fans who am intrigued with the various cast members' careers apart from Rocky Horror. The second CD provides you with several solo recordings by Tim Curry and Little Nell, plus a few cuts from Richard O'Brien's "Shock Treatment."

If you are a Mega-Rocky-Fan who wants a fantastic dose of Rocky Horror song & dance, this is the CD to get. In my opinion, this blows the more publicized "25th Anniversary" commemorative CD right out of the water! This CD is well worth the wait and extra money.

5 out of 5 stars it's RHPS so it is awesome.......2001-04-14
