Editorial Reviews

The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson

Customer Reviews:
Martina's why I bought it.......2007-05-14
And her rendition of "How Great Thou Art" is worth the price of the CD to me. I have mixed feelings about the rest of it. I didn't care much for most of the male voices. While they are sensitive and thoughtful and generally reverent, which I do appreciate, I still prefer more traditional, resonant, powerful male voices, such as Alan Jackson's on his gospel CD. I will listen to this one occasionally, if only to hear Martina, but Precious Memories is still my favorite.
Why are so many "inspired by" recordings not truly inspired by the source material?.......2007-04-07
I wonder why so many "inspired by" recordings are not produced in response to the material that supposedly serves as the basis for their inspiration. In the case of movies, why not let the artists view the film prior to its release, and let them craft songs built around scenes, themes or the ideas presented. There may be some reason why this isn't done--it may be hard to write enough original songs, or maybe it's difficult to let the artists see a film prior to its release. If the problem is the latter, why couldn't those contributing songs be given something in written form? It may not be as inspiring, but it at least provides a starting point for creating a song.
This is not to knock Music Inspired by the Motion Picture Amazing Grace. It's a fine collection of hymns by a variety of talented artists. It seems a shame though that only the song "Amazing Grace" performed by Chris Tomlin has any direct connection with the movie. John Newton, the author of the hymn, had a relationship with the key figure in the film, William Wilberforce.
Tomlin does what many of the artists do with these hymns, and a little more. In addition to a different arrangement, he takes the risk of adding some new verses to a classic song, and pulls it off admirably. Nichole Nordeman does the same with equally impressive results on "Just As I Am." Tomlin's subdued playing and instrumentation reinvents and adds a touch of grace to one of the most popular songs of all time.
Jeremy Camp's strong masculine voice is the perfect complement for music that thunders around the verses of "It Is Well." It's a strong performance augmented by the background vocals of his wife Adie.
This is one of several remarkable duets, the next featuring Shawn McDonald & Bethany Dillon on "All Creatures of Our God & King." It starts off with an ethereal vibe but the vocals get a little cluttered with the programming that ends the song. Another song that suffers from programming is "Fairest Lord Jesus" by Natalie Grant.
It's a challenge for artists to take such familiar songs and make them sound fresh. For the most part, these interpretations succeed in making these hymns sound new. The best results here are the songs that are acoustic and less complicated like the title song.
Another brilliant example is "Rock of Ages" by David Crowder & Marty Stuart. It begins and ends with a delightful acoustic instrumental that sounds like some wonderful Christmas recording. David Crowder continues to record impressive music.
The medley "My Jesus I Love Thee / `Tis So Sweet" by Bart Millard (of Mercy Me) starts and ends with the sounds of an accordion. The music is a relaxed blend of contemporary and pop sounds. Though the title of the song does not show this as a duet, the voice of Derek Webb is unmistakable. He is a great addition to one of the best songs on the recording.
A light country version of "How Great Thou Art" by Martina McBride is also excellent and closes the recording.
Two black gospel songs are included, but with orchestration and more production, they don't fit as well with the many songs that lean toward acoustic pop or rock. They are well done and they do add variety, but like the songs that make use of programming, they feel a little out of place.
This is a strong collection of hymns done in a contemporary style. It won't appeal as much to those who favor more traditional renderings.
Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy!.......2007-04-06
With the exception of the first and last tracks ("Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art"), I would have to say that the balance of the songs on this CD are limp and unenthusiastic....better to go right to iTunes or some other music download site and just get those two tracks!!
I think the CD was made with good intent, but unless you want something to fall asleep to, this album doesn't seem to reflect any of the joy or enthusiasm that I associate with Christian music or Christianity itself. Perhaps it was just that the songs were sung "quietly", but I did not find them to be infused with much in the way of "inspiration", and I got none from listening to them.......
Far better, I think, to go buy something like the soundtrack to the actual movie "Amazing Grace", which contains beautiful and atmospheric compositions, and which deserves to be nominated for an Academy award....
Another option would be to buy the soundrack to either of the "Sister Act" movies (in addition to my suggestion in the preceding paragraph), they are much more lively, joyful, celebratory and creative than this!
Any of those options will leave you more uplifted and inspired than this CD left me...I absolutely LOVED "Amazing Grace", and would strongly urge anyone looking for a GOOD movie to see the film that "inspired the music" on this CD.
Seeing the actual film will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful; that good men can still accomplish great things, no matter how many people are on the "other side" of what they are working against!!
[Hint: I understand that that WONDERFUL rendition of "Amazing Grace" with the bagpipes, drums and other instruments that plays at the end of the movie is available on iTunes as a "bonus track", and it is DEFINITELY NOT TO BE MISSED!!!]
Inspirational and beautiful.......2007-03-29
I bought this CD after hearing the updated version of Amazing Grace, the title and theme song for the movie. WOW - I was so impressed that a classic hymn could be modernized without losing it's impace and simplicity. I had doubts about the rest of the songs, but was soooo wrong - happily!) All the songs on this CD are beautiful - classic hymns, updated beautifully. Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful.
AMAZING CD!! .......2007-03-27
Great traditional songs I know by artists I love!! Only downfall is the original version of "Amazing Grace" isnt on the CD, only Chris Tomlin's amazing version..

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.
The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.
From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

Just what I wanted.......2006-11-06
I saw the making of the CD on TV. The cast does a great job. I have the CD in my car stereo and listen to it often.
I Want to be a producer.......2006-03-06
This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)
Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13
While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.
While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.
As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!
I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.
Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12
My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.
I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.
Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.
Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.
it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08
This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!
So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

A terrific sampler of greatest hits from the heyday of girl groups and the Brill Building--except that none of the songs are actually from that era. What we have here is an incredible simulation--from Allison Anders' unjustly overlooked 1996 movie about the tempestuous life and career of a Carole King- like singer-songwriter (the magnificent Illeana Douglas) who spends years writing for others before finding her own voice. But instead of just licensing the old Shirelles' recordings of Goffin-King hits, the filmmakers came up with the brilliant idea of doing original songs by combining the sensibilities of contemporary artists and their songwriting forebears. So, for example, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach teamed up to write and perform the power- ballad "God Give Me Strength" (although I wish they'd also included Douglas's even more moving version from the picture); Leslie Gore teams with Larry Klein and David Baerwald for "My Secret Love" (performed by Miss Lily Banquette of Combustible Edison); Gerry and Louise Goffin team with Baerwald for "Between Two Worlds" (performed by Sean Colvin); J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. writes and sings some Brian Wilson/Beach Boys-type stuff ("Take a Run at the Sun," "Don't You Think It's Time"), and so on. Buy the record; see the movie. You won't be disappointed. --Jim Emerson

A rip-off without Kristen Vigard's version of the theme song!.......2007-06-06
How could they release this without Kristen Vigard's version of "God Give me Strength"? Not to knock Elvis Costello's version, but Kristen Vigard's performance of this song is the heart and soul of the movie. This CD is a rip-off without it.
The quality and range of this CD is amazing........2007-05-22
I watched the movie and ordered the CD on a lark. I was blown away by the quality of the music on this CD. It is one of my favorite all time CD's (in a collection of several thousand) and I listen to it frequently all the way through. The story of how these songs were conceived and recorded (watch the "extra features" director's interview on the DVD) makes it all the more remarkable.
Great Soundtrack LISTENERS NEED TO KNOW THE TRUTH.......2007-01-15
Okay first of all "GOD GIVE ME STRENGTH" sung by the "Denise" character played perfectly by Illeana Douglas. IS NOT SUNG BY ILLEANA DOUGLAS. SHE IS NOT SINGING!!!!!!!!!!! "God Give Me Strength" and "A Boat On A Sea" are sung wonderfully by Kirstin Vigard. So for those of you who are looking for the version with Illeana singing , you won't find it. Itunes has "God Give Me Strength"(THE DENISE VERSION) under Kirstin Vigard. As for the rest of the soundtrack, There is an excellent version of GGMS by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach. The remainder of the sountrack has the fun poppy songs from the movie.
Brilliant, if flawed, soundtrack.......2006-04-22
This is by far my favorite movie soundtrack from the 1990s. The combination of songwriting, production, and performance all comes together to create an amazing album. Larry Klein truly captured the spirit of the Brill Building and the flavor of the productions of the '60s in a way that few others have been able to do.
Given that, this is a flawed soundtrack. My reasons for finding it flawed are much the same as the other reviewers here -- there is a lot of material from the movie that is missing from the CD. Kristen Vigard's version of "God Give Me Strength" is the most notable omission, and even though a recording of it can be found on another CD, it is shameful that the most important song of the movie was left off the CD. (On the other side of that, I'm thrilled by Elvis Costello's version, and I'm glad it was included.)
It seems that this soundtrack could be made perfect by issuing a new, 2-CD version of the soundtrack, including all the other music from the film -- most importantly BOTH film versions of "God Give Me Strength," the solo version and full orchestral version.
Even with the flaws, this is still a fantastic soundtrack. The tracks by For Real are especially good, sounding as close to a Motown or Phil Spector production as you could possibly get.
I FOUND THE MOVIE VERSION OF GOD GIVE ME STRENGTH.......2005-04-08
Those of you lamenting the shameful omission of the movie's version of "God Give Me Grace" from this soundtrack can now rejoice. The album "Heart Beats: Love Scene - Romantic Movie Music" not only includes "Denise's" version of this amazing and heartbreaking ballad, but it also has a few gems from other soundtracks, including a couple of one-hit wonders from the 90's that are harder to find. Hope this helps everyone who loves this soundtrack but miss the movie's centerpiece song. Personally, without the signature song, I wondered why a soundtrack was necessary at all.

Album Description
From composer David Arnold (Casino Royale, Independence Day) comes the sweeping original score to the motion picture Amazing Grace. Recorded in London with some of the world's top musicians, Arnold brings to life the intense journey of Williams Wilberforce and his quest to abolish the British Slave Trade in the UK during the 1700s. Amazing Grace is the story of the famed hymn, its author John Newton (Albert Finney) and the powerful journey of William Wilberforce (Loan Gruffund- A&E's Horatio Hornblower, Fantastic Four) the man who risked his life and followed his calling to end slavery. Wilberforce's dream finally came true around the time of his death. Britain's slave trade was abolished and slaves were finally free. Experience this music journey as history unfolds and the power of one voice changes the world.
Customer Reviews:
Adequate David Arnold Soundtrack.......2007-07-10
This soundtrack tries to make up a lot for the meandering film. Arnold does a good job. However, I think Arnold should just stick to James Bond soundtracks.
First Rate Performance.......2007-05-09
Cannot do better than timely delivery of what was advertised and ordered.
disappointed in the extreme.......2007-04-26
I bought the soundtrack with the hope that the best song on the movie - the bagpipes version of Amazing Grace at the end of the film - would be on it. It is not.
If your objective is to get that bagpipe song, don't get the CD. the other songs are ok, but nothing to write home about.
Arnold's Serious Side: "Amazing Grace".......2007-04-18
Fresh from his well-received score for the latest Bond epic, "Casino Royale," David Arnold has turned to a far more somber and serious project with Michael Apted's important film about the beginning of the end of slavery in the British Empire, "Amazing Grace." This is not the first time Arnold has worked with Apted, note another Bond effort "The World is Not Enough," so we expected the two to be rather comfortable with one another. And a good match it has proven to be this time around. Arnold has produced a score as serious as the subject matter. It is intelligent, moving and at times quite poignant. One might have expected Arnold to simply integrate the well known hymn which naturally plays a role in the story and do a number of variations on it (much like his integration of the Bond theme into his 007 music), but instead he has created his own themes, including an especially haunting main theme, in a fine score. Arnold has proven himself in the action-adventure genres and we have been waiting for a more mature score, having tasted bits and pieces in a host of other works. Here we see that David Arnold is a capable composer across the spectrum. Well produced by EMI, the soundtrack is somewhat disappointing in its packaging; the promotion for "The Amazing Change" is appropriate and deserving of mention, but more could have been done about the film and music themselves. The promo for the "music inspired by the film" is a bit much though given that none of it is actually in the film.

Customer Reviews:
Not as Bad as I thought.......2006-05-13
With this being Will and Grace's final season and the final episode airing this week, this soundtrack will be a HOT item
This combination of 1980 disco and pop standards (I will survive, Gypsys Tramps and Thieves, The Bitch is Back, Its not unusual), modern remakes (like the Bacon Bros's remake of Footloose and Carly Simon (with Megan Mullany) remake of The Right Thing to Do) and stuff from J-Lo, Brittany seems to work.
The best cut on the cd is Eric McCormick (with Barry Manilow)singing Living with Grace. This cut alone proves he should record an album himself. Now where is Sean Hayes song-he needed one too! The worst cut is the radio mix of dialog with some sort of hip hop on "He's Hot".
If you want a musical memory of this show, it good....I's rather have the DVDS
Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLD
Upbeat and feel-good music.......2006-02-21
I was pleasantly surprised by this CD. It is upbeat and reflects the style of Will & Grace. I really loved the Carly Simon and Megan Mullally duet "The Right Thing to Do." I was totally unaware of Megan Mullally's beautiful singing voice. There's a sprinkling of catchy tunes from Queen, Cher, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, etc., as well as a couple of disco tunes thrown in that keep it interesting. One of my favorite songs from this mix is the "He's Hot" radio edit with Megan, Eric, Sean and Debra's voices interspersed.
Brilliant!.......2005-08-15
Its great compilation, but the highlight for me is definately the final track written and sung by Eric McCormack - when's he going to release his own album????????
I didn't know Tom Jones was a gay icon..........2005-02-02
A huge problem with this soundtrack is the fact that on Will & Grace, if we ever hear any music, it's for the briefest moment and to accept this as a collection of songs from the show is incorrect. And it doesn't jive.
This really is nothing more than a marketing scheme to once again sucker in crazy people who'd buy stupid compilations like these (IE: Queer as Folk). And these are stereotypical choices for tracks on a soundtrack for this show- a show about gay men, attempting to break certain stereotypes. My only ponder is- where's Boy George and George Michael? Honestly, we have Elton John and Freddy Mercury. And the ultra-gratuitous inclusion of Cher (why "Gypsies..." and not "Believe"?) and Gloria Gaynor. Who is this CD for? As a fan of this show, I can safely say it's not for me.
The worst thing about this compilation is that it's DEPRESSING! And rather lifeless. And I've seen the show. Where is Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina" and N'Sync's "Pop"? Not that this CD would be better with them... but at least it would be a more interesting buy. Though I must say the vocals from Eric McCormack and Megan Mullally are excellent.
A great soundtrack for a great show!.......2005-01-13
This soundtrack contains the best choices in music that correspond with the TV show, Will & Grace. Songs such as "You're My Best Friend"-by Queen, "White Flag"-by Dido, and "World On Fire"-by Sarah McLachlan, really help to define the personality and the relationship between the show's charachters, Will, Grace, Jack & Karen. However, at the same time the show is very musical all in itself, featuring artists like Barry Manilow, Elton John and Cher. They too are woven into this CD, along with performances by the actual actors themselves. The CD ends on a wonderful note with a song written by Manilow and Eric McCormack, the actor who plays Will. The song is called "Living With Grace" and it is a beautiful ballad dedicated to the relationship between the show's main characters Will & Grace. The piano accompaniment works well with Eric McCormack's voice, making the song very heartfelt and memorable. My only complaint with the CD is Britney Spears who I am not a big fan of. And who would believe the voice of Megan Mullally, the actress who plays Karen. She can really sing! I recommend this for any Will & Grace fan. It's great music that goes along with a great show.

Still inspiring.......2006-06-09
Even though the album isn't composed of the exact music from the show, it still gives you the same sense of awe that you experienced while watching the show. And much of the cd's music is based loosely on the music from the show, so you will recognise most of the tracks. I am especially delighted with this album because my favorite song from the show (that plays while one of the creatures is carrying the illuminated balloon) is featured in three of the tracks :)
If you REALLY want the exact music from the show, there is an exclusive soundtrack that includes these tracks plus six live recordings from the show (though it costs much more). I can't tell you where online to find it because Amazon will get angry, but I'm sure if you're determined you can find it. ;)
Not as expected..........2005-12-06
I gave this two stars because I felt sorry for Violaine Corradi. This is definetely not the Corradi I was expecting. If you want to listen to his better works, listen to Dralion! Varekai is not what I expected from a Cirque CD. I'm very disappointed.
Not exaclty expected, but good nonetheless........2005-10-26
This CD is amazing.
Some people are angry that it doesn't have all of the tracks from the show, but none of the Cirque Du Soleil CDs do! This album was a departure from Cirque tradition, though, because it was the first CD to be released under the CIRQUE MUSIQUE label...they tried more the idea of the show, instead of the show itself. The CD and the show are two different entities, but they are both ones that I love very much!
Varekai CD.......2005-08-15
Varekai is a Touring Show of Cirque du Soleil. It is a great show and the music hits your soul deeply. The lead female singer, Zara Tellander, hits great notes that reach out and go deeply into your soul. Cirque du Soleil always find singers who have great voices. Most songs are in an imaginary language. Trying to interpret one is difficult. Just let yourself go as you listen to it and let the music take your soul for a ride.
Dear God there are some idiots on this earth..........2005-08-13
No, this is not the music from the live show, Varekai, but much of it is used somewhere throughout the show, perhaps in a slight variation or in different lengths. Regardless of whether or not it is the soundtrack to the show, it's still beautiful. If the people who claim to "love" the show actually knew anything about Cirque du Soleil Musique in general they would know that most of the show music they sell on CD is not an actual soundtrack. I know at least that the Quidam, Varekai, La Nouba, Alegria, and Dralion CDs are this way. But check the boutique at www.cirquedusoleil.com, because they have released new editions of some that contain bonus live tracks recorded directly from the shows. They also have a Mystere: LIVE CD that is the music from a live production of Mystere. For those of you that say that the singers on stage in Varekai and the singers on the CD are the same? I hate to inform you that had you watched the reality show Cirque du Soleil: Fire Within, you would also know that this is not true. Leading up to Varekai's opening night they had a male singer from somewhere in eastern Europe and they let him go relatively soon before the show debuted and replaced him with another. And if you knew anything about showbusiness in general you would know that even if the original on-stage male singer for Varekai had been the same as the singer on the CD, he's probably been replaced by now, as Varkai's been touring for a few years.

Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09
Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.
Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11
This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.
witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13
My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

An Unheralded Gem.......2005-07-26
I hadn't listened to Mellencamp for years, but when I found this CD in a used bin I thought any record with songs by Dwight Yoakum and John Prine, not to mention a song where Yoakum, Prine, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and James McMurtry, not to mention Mellencamp, share vocals had to be worth seven bucks. And boy was it. Know next to nothing about the movie, but this collection of songs by some of the best singer/songwriters in contemporary alt-country/Americana is a gem. Starting with a gorgeous Nanci Griffith tune, followed by a Mellencamp penned rocker sung by Dwight Y., John Prine doing one of his own songs but backed by Mellencamp's band, a group I'd never heard of called Qkumbrz singing a beautifully aching ballad, not to mention a Janis Ian song, instrumentals by fiddler Lisa Germano, then of Mellencamp's band, and Johnny M. himself in fine voice (though alongside Dwight, John P., Joe E., Jimmie Dale, and McMurtry, his limitations as a singer stand out), and you have a great collection of performances and outstanding contemporary folk and country music. This is one of the best CDs I've heard all year.
Album Good For a Stupid Movie.......2005-05-05
I love this album. Don't scare me none is a good honest song. The movie is one of the worst I've ever seen. It's the reason JM hasn't done anything in the movies since.
Dwight is always worth a listen -.......2004-08-20
I love this album, I love the movie clip soundbites and the story running through it. I have not seen the film but would like to if it is released in UK.
OK some of the songs are not dynamic, but there are some stand out tracks and it makes for a pleasant alternative session. John Mellancamp is excellent and Dwight is as usual superb but the way the soundtrack clips are included is the difference I like.
Album is a lot like the movie.......2004-08-15
it is up and down - there are some really good spots and some real clunkers. To be honest, I bought the soundtrack to round out my Mellencamp collection. The Buzzin Cousins band are actually Mellencamp, Yoakam, James McMurtry and some others.

Taking its cue from the soundtrack's fluke Joan Osborne hit, "One of Us," this is the film that dares ask "What if one of us--or Jim Carrey--were God?" While the comedy here makes Ace Ventura sound like Noel Coward, its soundtrack is an energetic, if pedestrian, mix of modern rock (Osborne, Plumb's "God-Shaped Hole," "You're a God" by Vertical Horizon) and electronica (Snap!'s ubiquitous "The Power", the kitsch-hop of Elvis Vs. JXL's "A Little Less Conversation," Fatboy Slim) that's as fluffy as it is friendly. John Debney, a composer who's becoming to contemporary comedy what Bernard Herrmann was to murder mysteries, fills the album's second half with a sprightly collection of his trademark, breezily pastoral cues. --Jerry McCulley

Wish they had Barry and The Vines.......2006-12-29
I wish they would have included the Barry White song Bruce uses to seduce Grace with. Also they left out The Vines' song "Outtathaway" which is played when Bruce is driving his sportscar and parts all of the cars in traffic. I LOVE that song! But the album is OK otherwise, nice to listen to at work or while driving.
Tony Bennett Song.......2006-01-05
Does anyone know the song Tony Bennett plays while Bruce is at the restaurante with Grace?
God Song.......2005-08-07
The song at the beginning of the credits is: Are You Ready for A Miracle sung by The World Harvest Choir from the album: The Sound Of Jubilee.
There's still one missing!!.......2005-05-25
I watch the DVD of Bruce.
There's a cute song during the DVD's "menu section".
It's not in the movie but I love it very much.
Anyone could help??
The "stolen kiss" song........2005-04-10
When he is trying to call grace and gets kissed by Susan, the song that is being played is "I'm With You" by Avril Lavigne from the album Let Go.

Mystery resolved for Joni Mitchell Fans.......2004-07-22
There were two releases of this CD--this first time around (MCAD-11510), MCA accidentally released it with Joni Mitchell singing Track #7 "Man From Mars" (possibly a demo recording) instead of Kristen Vigard who is listed as the singer on the jacket. The CD was subsequently re-released with Kristen Vigard singing "Man From Mars" (MCAD-11554). I am not a fan of this CD (not thrilled with most of the material), but it is an interesting find for those who want an unbilled Joni Mitchell performance of her own song--if you are looking for that, you want MCAD-11510 (read the small print on the jacket to make sure).
