5 out of 5 stars Ride of the Fire Mares is where it's at!.......2007-02-15

That being said, this is my #1 favorite OST in my entire collection. (I own the 2-disc SuperCollector's edition) If my house burned down I'd be pissed if I couldn't get to my discs and pick this out. When it's time to soundtrack-it-out on a lonely work night, this is the score I consider first. It's not ritual to play it always, I don't want to kill it (if that's possible) but the desire is there. And for great reason.

The entire film is in here, & there are no tracks to be confused about.
Themeic coverage is almost complete in this score. Nearly everything humans can feel are seeded here: comradery, risk, sacrfice, triumph, love, puissance, adventure, wonder.

If you don't get it, then you shouldn't even buy the original release which is for sale here. You probably don't like scores anyhow. Go back to WWF and pro-racing.

It's his coverage and range I adore. It's magnanomous in that way. Again, #1 for a reason. Vince Dicola's Transformers comes in a close second.

Food for thought: Horner reuses themic representation. You can hear surprise, jolting, resounding shock, and fear, as a sound, in other scores he's done. So some element of pure taste/opinion plays a part in my adoration; he uses the sounds that appeal to me, they speak volumes...to me. Others don't get it, if they do, I've not met but maybe one.

If you liked the film, then buying the extended 2-disc set & listening to it will surely make apparent why.

5 out of 5 stars Horner's sci-fi masterpiece.......2006-02-08

No, I didn't see the film so I bought this on blind-faith. It's been said that composers do their best work under pressure. That's a bold statement but James Newton Howard proved that it's possible (e.g. Waterworld, King Kong). James Horner was ill during the scoring of this film and succeeded in composing one of his greatest works ever.

[This is my review of the complete score album]

"Krull Main Title and Colwyn's Arrival" is the track that greets us at the beginning of the Supercollector's Label 2CD release. It starts off with low strings slowly progressing into a loud, bold fanfare with chorus. This is one of the better songs of the first disc.

"The Slayers Attack" is the longest track of the album. It starts off romantic but then is suddenly interrupted by violent movement of strings as something terrible is happening onscreen.

"Colwyn and Lyssa Love Theme" is a wonderful, romantic theme. It sounds strangely familiar maybe because it used in many trailers. This track is composed similarly to "Luke and Leia" from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

"Ride of the Firemares" is a fantastic, racing track. This is one of the best of the album because it's by far the most swashbuckling and sweeping track of them all.

"Battle of the Parapets" is similar to "Ride of the Firemares" only that it's about half as long. Still, this is another great track.

"The Death of the Beast and the Destruction of the Black Forest" is the darkest and most tense track of the album. It's also one of the longest tracks clocking in at 8 minutes and 32 seconds. Once the track beginnings, it doesn't let up until the climatic finish. I'd rate this track as the best of the bunch because of the sheer power and intensity of the London Symphony Orchestra's performance adding to the doom the track title represents.

"Epilogue and End Title" is basically a small suite of the important main themes of the album. This is another good track.

This is a rare collector's item so don't be surprised at the steep price of the album. I paid nearly $70 for my copy and it is worth the price, although it's possible to find this one at a better price on specialty outlets.

5 out of 5 stars Lush, gorgeous, exhilarating.......2005-11-04

I can never stop being emotional about this soundtrack, really.

Krull was just pleasantly entertaining popcorn fodder, back in the early eighties. Hey, but the soundtrack, the music!

It instantly stands out of the rest of the movie. Grand on a truly epic scale, absolutely gorgeous themes powerful enough to get you out of any bad mood! I dare anyone to listen to the main theme (riding the fire mares) and remain unaffected.

Horner has never really outdone this piece of work. It is an absolute classic and a real shame that we don't get a new, high quality release.

5 out of 5 stars Love the soundtrack, but too broke to afford it.......2005-05-16

This is probably my favorite soundtrack of all time (Willow and Jurassic Park being right up there). Many people love it to death. Why can't an affordable version be released? They have special 2 discs CDs of canned soundtrack music that you can hear on your local radio station any time of the day (a la "Wedding Singer"), but they can't release a reissue of a brilliant original soundtrack? Nearly every other Horner soundtrack is available except his first and best. Something wrong with that.

5 out of 5 stars One of Horner's Best.......2005-01-19

This is simply an excellent album. I have the Southern Cross version (SCCD 1004). The other versions might or might not be sonically better, I've never heard them but, no matter which version you find the search, I'm sure, will be worth the effort.

I'm a bit puzzled that I'm the first to review this album. Where are all the Horner fans?

    1 out of 5 stars wrong artists.......2007-01-11

ISBN 056775077723 is not the cd with Charles Hart, John Barrowman and Claire Moore.
This isbn is for a terrible version with the Orlando Pops conducted by Andrew Lane with mezzo soprano; Marguerite Krull and baritone; Justin White. This version the singing lacks passion and is grating and the orchestra is disjointed and thoroughly unmelodic.
Thank goodness I bought used for only a $1. I still want the one with Barrowman and Moore.

    1 out of 5 stars Amazon's Fault?.......2005-04-05

Well, I was looking up my favorite Phantom music when I found this CD. I listened to the samples of music they gave, and was entranced by the lovely Phantom and the voice of Christine. I bought it without a second thought.

Though I assumed that it was a mistake that the song 'Memory' from Cats played as 'Music of the Night' I assumed that was simply a mistake and dismissed it.

However, I got the CD today, and eagerly put it into my walkman. Out came a Christine and Phantom duet I had never heard before. And was eager to avoid!!!

They were horrid singers!! Definetly NOT the Angels I had anticipated....

Let the buyer beware... I'm terribly disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing like the original.......2004-04-19

I first discovered this CD hidden well beneath the depths of my father's collection. after seeing the play on broadway, i decided to pop it in. that was my mistake.

THIS WILL NEVER COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDING!!! who picked Graham Bickley to be the Phantom? i mean, come on! he's a singing joke next to Michael Crawford, anyone would understand that. I mean, sure, the guy can sing, but simply being able to pull off a few notes does NOT make you one of the most immortal charecters of all time. this is something that Michael Crawford does, and pulls it off with perfection. BUUUT, unfortunately, Graham is not a strong candidate. there's no interest in his singing. it's all wooden and boring.

claire moore, on the other hand, i rather liked. i read what some people have said before, but i slightly disagree. i thought that she had a wonderfully passionate voice. she actually has charecter to it that even sarah brightman could never have. i'm sorry, but sarah is suffering a simmilar affliction that graham is unfortunate to be influenced by. both are good singers, with all the technicalities correct. but when it comes to a truly passionate performance, moore and crawford have it right.

so buy this, if you wish. it's a good cd, though the orchestrations are not that "WOW" either. the rest of the cast is adequate. but i would recommend the highlights of the original recording. sorry, i'm a purist.

3 out of 5 stars For Extreme Collectors Only!.......2004-01-09

FYI: The version of this CD that I have is all Phantom songs.

This recording of Phantom was not that great. First of all, the orchestrations were so unbelievable weak for the first 4 songs, then got better.
I really did not like Claire Moore's voice on this recording. Her voice is weak, and unemotional, besides the fact that she is not a strong soprano (at least not here), she truly sounds like a shrill mezzo-soprano. When she sings the high E at the end of POTO, she sounds like me trying to hit it anywhere but the shower. She can't compare to Rebecca Caine (Canada recording) or even Sarah Brightman (London Recording).

Graham Bickley as the Phantom was slightly better, but not as strong as Michael Crawford, and he can't even hold a candle to Phantom I saw live, Brad Little. His Music Of The Night is better than some, but not great.

John Barrowman is okay as Raoul, but I've heard much better. He has slightly more emotion than his cast mates, but loses it during All I Ask Of You.

    The Good Thing About It:
    1. Another Phantom CD!!!!!

    2. It switches back and forth from bad to good.
    3. During Prima Donna you can actually understand what someone besides Carlotta is singing!

    3 out of 5 stars Well..........2002-10-06

Am I the only one not enjoying Claire Moore? I find her voice stiff and operatic, and not excactly enjoyable on the very high and very low notes. And her vibrato on the high notes is very un-natural. When I hear Christines, I want to be seduced by their nightingale voices. Well. Claire Moore is NOT a nightingale...
And why is Graham Bickley casted as the Phantom? He would make the greatest Raoul - but the Phantom? No. He's never played the part, and he's not got the haunting voice the Phantom should have. I have really enjoyed Mr. Bickley before, in Miss Saigon, Which Witch and other demanding musicals, and he was actually the reason why I bought the CD. But boy, did he disappoint me. He's doing an OK version of "Music of the night" and "Past the point of no return", but as I mentioned, he's a lot more "Raoul-material".
I would love to hear more of Gay Soper as Madame Giry, but unfortuneately, she's barely hearable in "Primadonna".
The other main roles is doing more than fine. It's nice to hear a Meg with a voice. It took me some time to get used this records Raoul, but now I even enjoy him.... And the Carlotta is hitting the notes.
This CD has got the newer lyrics, for example on "Think of me" and "Wishing....again". I, of course, are more fond of the original texts...
The orchestra is doing fine, although the pipe organ-like sound which is in "Overture" and the title duet, sounds really, really fake!
All in all, you can hear that this is a cheaper CD than the other cast CD's, but it's worth it's money. I would give it 3,5. And if you are a fan, you simply ought to own this. At least just to compare Graham Bickley and Claire Moore to Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman...

Read the other review, it sums up accurately this rendition. It's simply awful. You know the other reviewer summed this recording up by saying something about tone deaf wolves, I would further like to push the anology by saying "Tone-Deaf Banshees Playing in a Garage.

Oh My God. What a horrible rendition of the best rock opera ever. If you have never heard JCS or you don't own a copy, please don't buy this . . . . Wait, don't buy this anyway. This recording out of Quebec, deserves to be thrown to a pack of vicious tone-deaf wolves. And even that would be a mercy killing. One word sums it up. Crap. The Judas with a "lithp" has got to go. The entire cast over-enunicates and their spontaneous creativeness sounds rehearsed. Basically, a Mormon church choir trying a bit too hard to sound rockish. It doesn't work for me at all. Generally, there is a high point to any highlights album, but this one doesn't even have that. Run from this one as fast as you can. This is an example of something that you CAN knock before you try it.
