Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not as good as the vinyl version........2006-02-28

I bought the vinyl version of this excellent soundtrack many years ago, from a specialist shop in London (now called Rare Discs, 18 Bloomsbury Street - well worth a visit).

It's great the film score is now available on CD, but the end title track "Orca(Finale)" is different from the vinyl which is disappointing and why I only give 4 stars. There are no haunting vocals to be heard in it - "we are one, we are one cried my love, let me lead you through the stillness of the night, deliver dawn's first light my love...etc etc." - fantastic lyrics and go so well with Ennio's main melody. Anyone who has seen the film will know.

Still, the CD is a great buy for all you Morricone fans out there.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD for Orca if nothing else.......2005-07-20

The opening score, "Orca" sets the theme of this sad movie. What many who judge it by the cover believe it is nothing but another Jaws knock-off. Another Pirhana. You are 100% wrong. I first rented the movie as a child, expecting a great Jaws like movie, as I have always been a B-movie buff and rip-offs are as B as you come. I remember being surprised by the opening music. One would expect a Jaws rip-off to include Jaw rip-off music. Instead, it was a hauntingly sad melody. This sets the stage for the entire movie. That this movie though billed as horror is more a drama. Sadder then Moby Dick because instead of them being beasts, they are more human. And the music for all the scenes sets this tone. I cried as a child watching this movie. And listening to the music, it brings back those tearful memories. It is truely a beautiful piece of music and a good movie. But neither the music nor the movie gets the due credit they deserve. Orca will probably forever be billed as a Jaws rip-off, except for those who have actually watched it.

5 out of 5 stars great endscore.......2003-03-17

The opening and end songs are the best and is what makes the CD. It is a great CD for dramatic, somber music.

5 out of 5 stars this movie doesn't deserve this soundtrack.......2003-03-08

Ennio Morricone, one of the foremost composers of our time (at least as far as I'm concerned) composed the music for this very silly JAWS [takeoff]. His soundtrack alone makes the film compelling, and I personally watched it not to see what would happen onscreen, but to see what shape the music would take next. By and large, this is some very downbeat, melancholy music ("Nocturne for a Remorse"), with moments of dramatic atonality ("Early Ices") and even some camp novelty ("A Ball at Home"). The lovely, sighing elegance of the principle 'Orca' theme is unforgettable, and addictive as all get-out. ...Almost the entire disc is a shining example of what a film score should sound like; fans of Morricone, of film music, or of interesting music in general could do worse than to pick up this slice of heaven on a disc. They should make a movie that utilises this soundtrack to much greater effect. Hey, that's actually not a bad idea...

3 out of 5 stars This one`s for nostalgia.......2002-02-19

I looked for this music for 15 years before I moved to NY and found it in an obscure import shop. It`s not great. The movie certainly wasn't great either. But if you saw it when you were just a kid like I was,it was affecting.Ennio Morricone, now world renowned composer, was just branching out of his western scores, and this was one the earliest. The Orca theme itself is very haunting, with rich string arrangements. The near falsetto of "Dialogue of the memories" is very sad and moving..and short. The rest...well...it aint so hot.But if youre like me,(are you like me-charming and suave?),you`ll want to capture some of those precious childhood moments with this music.Free Willy aint gonna do it.
