"A hit; a very palpable hit...".......2007-03-14
Anime! Although mostly dismissed and derided still in the U.S., the medium yet sometimes succeeds in pushing itself into the public eye. Who hasn't seen "Ninja Scroll," "Ghost in the Shell," or "Princess Mononoke" sitting on the shelves at their local Blockbuster? Of course, the most long-lived and celebrated anime, Akira, is often the tonic that draws many to explore this particular cultural Japanese import in more depth. Akira, that culmination of many of the best aspects of the genre, remains for me the masterpiece. Almost twenty years old on film now, its original, intricate and detailed storyline from the manga was backed up by a strong dark vision whose artwork transfers excellently on screen and wears well today still, despite the advances made in and frequent incorporation of computer animation into the large budget animes and so forth. For all that, and for the very large number of animes out there, I have still not seen many animes (and I've seen a few now) that approach Akira in 'depth' (underlying feeling, I mean) or power of vision.
To the point of this review: much of the credit for the movie's staying power of course goes to the Akira production staff, the animators and the director, but a lot of it goes also to the film's musical director, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, chosen for his interest in world music and styles (according to the Akira special edition feature--note that the making of the movie is worth watching for those curious about it). Yamashirogumi, who describes the project as "this dream job" was given free rein to create: and what a soundtrack he made! Traditional woodblocks, rock, native harmonies, choral music, and even Noh theatre make their presence felt here. Its fun, complicated music, and a trip to listen to also. Many of the reviews posted on here already list their favorite tracks, but I prefer myself to listen to the whole at once. So if you enjoy music, and you like original stuff, please check this out--its actually likeable, for being modern, and I have not heard music like this anywhere else, much less on any soundtrack for any sort of film. And as far as anime music goes, believe me, this is as good as it gets. Highly, highly recommended.
Wait, read this before you buy!.......2004-10-11
The question is not whether you should own the soundtrack to the film -- the answer to that is a resounding YES. The question is, "Why would you purchase the import?"
I bought both the import and the domestic version to make sure that I wasn't missing out on something; the import - at least the edition that I just got from an Amazon seller - lacks the same booklet that comes with the domestic version. The domestic version includes several pages explaining the music behind the motion:
1) "The movie AKIRA and the background music the AKIRA OS," written by Katsuhiro Otomo, the director of the film.
2) "The path to producing the AKIRA Original Soundtrack."
3) "A few words on the music," which is more than a few words; it explains the culture behind the music of each track, and how this also fits in with the images on the screen.
4) "The Synopsis of Akira"
5) "Profile of the Yamashirogumi" -- about the voices that make this unlike any other OS.
The domestic version is also cheaper, so this decision is a no-brainer. The sound quality is equal in either release.
While it may be true that the opening track is probably the best (the masterpiece of the soundtrack), those who call this CD "half-good" need to open their minds up a little wider.
one of the best soundtracks of the 20th century.......2004-05-20
I bought this disc for $9.99 + tax at Media Play two months ago. That wasn't a sale, that's their price. I though it'd be very short, but it's over an hour of music. Even if you haven't seen the film, it's a great album to own. But if you have not seen the film, do yourself a favor and buy the DVD. $14.99 at Best Buy.
Amazing, One of the Best Soundtracks I've heard.......2004-05-12
I first saw Akira in college, and was immediately blown away. Shortly afterward, I went to Napster and downloaded the entire Soundtrack. This was back in 1998. Akira was the first CD I bought after using Napster, I shortly saw it at a local used CD store for 13 bucks. I listen to it occasionally and I'm always amazed. "Tetsuo", "Requiem", "Kaneda", "Illusion", and "Shohmyoh" are my top 5 favorite tracks, although I enjoy the entire soundtrack. The music is just amazing in texture, depth and some places are emotionally stirring, evoking sadness and tears. "Requiem" is among the most moving music I've ever heard. The Soundtrack stands by itself as great music, even if only from a Movie. The music still stays in my memory years after first hearing it, even during a recent re-read of the Akria Manga, I could hear the Soundtrack playing in my mind, even if not currently playing on my Stereo, or even with it off. Highly recommended to fans of the Akira Anime and Manga, collectors of Soundtracks, listeners of Japanese Music, and students and instructors of Music.
ohhhh hell yeah.......2004-02-16

Album Description
Available for the first time in the US, this is the complete Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to the classic 1954 film GODZILLA, featuring the score by famed composer Akira Ifukube. Ifukube's timeless orchestral score evokes all the terror and majesty of that towering creature cherished around the world. Produced in association with Toho Studios, the score has been remastered and complemented with bonus tracks (cues edited as they appeared in the film). The CD booklet features exclusive artwork and in-depth liner notes.
Customer Reviews:
It's big and it's terrible!.......2005-07-28
Sorry, I couldn't resist using Raymond Burr's awful line. But this soundtrack is indeed truly AWESOME! One of the best things about Godzilla is the music, which was so distinctive and so haunting that it made us overlook the cheesy special effects. More than any of his 1950's monster contemporaries, Godzilla's soundtrack gave the big guy a soul that spooked children and stayed with them long after they grew up into sensible adults. I still get chills whenever I hear those school girls singing the Prayer for Peace. Akira Ifukube was a genius whose music was an apt coronation for the King of the Monsters!
Great Addition to Your Collection.......2004-10-07
If you're a fan of the original Godzilla movie, American version or Japanese, both contain the same music. This CD is a dream come true for Godzilla fans in the U.S. The music sounds great, doesn't sound aged at all, but still old fashioned, which is good. Track 20, is probably the saddest and most moving song I have ever heard, long song also, 6:20, but it's worth the listen. Akira Ifukube is definatly the master when it comes to kaiju film music. The extra tracks are a treat as well, they are just the film versions of some of the songs, but still great. If you want to make your kaiju collection grow, then this is worth it, or if you just like orchestral music, then it's worth the wait for shipping. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Origato, Ikufube-san!.......2004-08-24
This remastered CD of Akira Ikufube's original Godzilla score is an excellent addition to the fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the film series. Ikufube is constantly mentioned in discussions of the Godzilla films, and it's easy to see why: he always treated his subject seriously, even when the movie itself didn't.
Surprisingly, the music doesn't feel terribly dated. You can often pinpoint the age of a movie soundtrack pretty accurately, particularly 1950s sci-fi movies (the theramin is usually the giveaway). I don't think this is because Ikufube continued to score the Godzilla series well into the 1990s. Rather, I think his classical music training allowed him to create a score that was not influenced by the sounds of the time. "Classic" is an overused adjective, but it's appropriate for a score that feels relatively modern after 50 years.
The one thing that does date the music is the quality of the recording. It's in mono, of course, and the music is not as crisp as you would hear in a contemporary recording. Still, the sound remaster is impressive considering the age of the original recordings.
It's also interesting to listen to this score in comparison to Ikufube's later music for the series. The music is extremely somber, in contrast to the more adventurous tone that Ikufube created for later films. For example, Godzilla's "entry" theme is here (in tracks like "Godzilla's Rampage"), but in a much slower, more menacing version that is barely recognizable as the powerful signature it would become later.
At just over 45 minutes, there's not a lot of music on this CD. And of those, four tracks reprise earlier cues, just rearranging the cues to the order they appeared in the movie. There's also some Godzilla sound effects. Their inclusion is appropriate, considering that Ikufube created them with musical instruments! (This piece of information is one of my favourite tidbits from the liner notes, which are fairly good.)
If you're interested in the familiar Godzilla themes, you're probably better off with a compilation CD of Godzilla music: it will have better sounding recordings, and the themes are more recognizable. But for serious kaiju fans and film score afficianados, this CD is a treat.

A work of art.......2007-02-19
Beautiful, luscious, haunting, melodic, epic. It will soothe you, move you, and carry you away. Simply a work of art.
Great Movie music.......2004-02-04
I don't often have to buy a film soundtrack, but I needed to own this one. The producer of this film took over part way thru and directed himself, throwing out the electronic score and getting Senju to do this orchestral version. It is hard to imagine any other music to compliment the lavish imagery of this intriguing and visionary film.
Senju's romantic harmonies and rich orchestral timbres remind me of Morricone, however it is not derivative. What emerges is distinct and pure, heartful and powerfully emotional, yet remaining pristine and unsentimental. This is due to the incredible compositional discipline this Senju exhibits.
It is rare that I feel the need to transcribe the themes of a film, but I have done just so with this music. It is a unique contribution to cinematic music.
Great Orchestral Work!.......2002-04-27
...I've not watched this movie yet, but as I know Akira Senju, who is definitely best film and orchestral music composer after Toru Takemitsu in Japan,I know the music must be great. This album is performed by Czech Philharmonic Orchestra that insures top-rate performance. The Love Theme flows with Oboe and Cello, beautiful melody and orchestration. Akira Senju is great at writing melody, his music always has moving melodies and harmonies. This soundtrack is absolutely must have for any fan of those great film composers. Also, if you got chance,be sure to own another soundtrack of Akira Senju which named "The Last Song",an excellent orchestral soundtrack to die for.
"Beautiful music with a touch of mystery....!".......1999-06-13
My wife's love of foreign films has given me the chance enjoy many great films I would never have seen otherwise. When I gave her "The Mystery of Rampo" as a gift we were both taken with the soundtrack. The lush themes weaving in and out of the story absolutely mesmerized us both. The CD is as beautiful as the music was as experienced in the film. It is very remenicient of John Barry from "Somewhere In Time". If you love stunning scores, be sure to add this CD to your collection!

Very Good!!.......2003-12-16
After "made in hawaii" I wasn't sure I wanted to part with the money for this import. I found it on the marketplace for almost half the money and it is well worth it if you like Akira's style of playing. It is definately riff filled heavy metal but what makes it for me is when he breaks out of the metal mode. The song 'earth' is a gorgeous piano piece. I see that that one is not included on the CD. The one I bought has 17 tracks. This CD would get a 5 if it had guest vocals. Akira does sing on the last track 'broken camera' but I am not too hip on his singing. Still makes the cd interesting enough!! I would love to see Akira explore the electronic music genre and see what he could come up with!!!

One of the greatest soundtracks...ever.......2004-12-04
This is a must-own soundtrack for anyone that's seen the movie. The first track, Kaneda, is pure genius, and is one of the single greatest tracks from any film, in my opinion. The majority of the music on here is excellent, and by all means worth having. The music perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the movie, in more ways than one.
A BRILLIANT MASTERPIECE!.......2003-02-04
This is an astounding soundtrack. It was actually composed before the film, the animation teams worked around the structure of the music. This CD sounds like NOTHING else you've ever heard. It combines complex vocal/choral work with interesting percussion from throughout Asia especially Gamelan music from Bali!
The soundscape of this recording paints a paradoxical picture, Primitive and high tech,on one hand is is relaxing and beautiful on the other it is menacing and moody, light and dark mixing in orchestral bliss.
weak in the knees...........2002-01-25
OH MY SWEET SAVIOR!!!!!! This c.d. is a celebration of collective brilliance! you pop in this disc and you begin to melt in its complexity...mixes of s.e. and choral bliss.....you are literally turned to jello......
Anime fan or not, BUY THIS C.D.!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basically the movie in musical form.......1999-07-31
This soundtrack really manages to pull off the exact same effect as the movie for which it was created (unlike others such as The Final Conflict, which was an incredible soundtrack for an awful movie). Both the film and its music initially leave the audience wondering, "Now what was THAT?" after a first experience, but after repeated viewings/listenings they take on levels of beauty rarely achieved by any work of modern entertainment. My favorite example is track 4, which basically tells the story of how Tetsuo's powers blossom into a dangerous nightmare of tragic evil; the first time I heard it, it seemed like just a bunch of chimes and people yelling "DA!! DA!! DA DA!!" But now, the piece instantly gives me a feeling of intimidation at the cruelty and corruption true power can elicit. Every track somehow manages to create its own hypnotic, utterly clear emotional response; some are terrifying, others calm and sad, others exciting. A masterpiece every bit as complex and intriguing as the movie, at least if you give it a chance.
A great soundtrack for any Anime fan.......1999-04-08
Akira was a movie that started the whole anime craz in America, and rightfully so. The soundtrack is a great piece of work with great atmospheric tracks and other styles. I highly recommend this to any anime fan of the movie or soundtracks.

THE BEST SERIE AND THE BEST SOUNDTRACK.......2005-09-17
GENESHAFT IS THE BEST SERIE I HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE . AND THE SOUNDTRACK IS CORRECTLY MADE FOR THE SERIE HAAAAAAAAA AND IS MADE BY THE BEST GUITARRIST ON ALL HE WORLD AKIRA TAKASAKI
THE BEST SONGS ARE SPACE WALKMAN ,SHAFT DRIVE AND BROKEN CAMERA
Unbelievable.......2005-09-12
I'll be honest, I have no clue what Geneshaft is and will never watch it as I'm not into Japanese Anime. I am, however, into great music ~ no matter where it comes from. This album is guitar rock in it's finest form. The music seems to go places on it's own without the need for lyrics. Some of the riffs strongly resemble Metallica's Master of Puppets album - especially their instrumental "Orion". As I mentioned, there are no lyrics other than a few sound clips that I assume are from the series or movie (like I said, I'm not sure what Geneshaft is). For those looking for straight ahead rock music with or without lyrics this is the album for you.
Very Good.......2005-06-10
Though the "The Loudness", the band Akira Takasaki was formaly in, was a bit of a joke, it was realy the horrible vocals and lyrics that made it that way. Takasaki delives some extremely heavy riffs that match the show perfectly. Abandoning the poor excuse for metal he once played, Akira produces a sort of mechanical grinding with some odd effects ranging from distortion to wah peddles. The album is very well put togather with some blues sounding and piano songs thrown to avert from the constant pounding. there are only two flows: the absence of an enlongated theme song and the Attrocious vocals in Broken Mirror.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!.......2005-01-29
Two Words: Incredibly Awesome!!!!!!!! If you love the series, then you're going to definetely love the Sound Track.

THIS SUCKS!!!.......2004-03-22
I am so dissapointed in this sound track. Akira is my favoret anime, and I've always loved the music from it, but this item was a complete waste of time and money. This version of the akira sound track is simply a digital recording of the origional movie's audio, complete with Japanies dialog, and sound effects. If you want the sound track to this movie, look around, and find the one that actually has more than 4 tracks on it. I think that one may be just the music, but I don't know for sure.
Liked it, but I should have bought the other one..........2002-01-25
I bought this and like it but the tracks are not completly music, there is alot of the jappenese script, I would buy the other one if i could.
hello.......2000-03-15

If you have the other version, skip this........2000-03-07
This sounds like it was made in about a week on a shoestring budget. What is it? Well, it's a slaughtered version of the *real* Akira soundtrack with dialogue and sound effects from the movie woven in. A hardcore fan of the movie might like this, but I certainly didn't. True, there are some goodparts, but not many... Tetsuo's laugh, for instance, has to be one of the most chilling sounds on record, and there's some odd interweaving of different tracks from the *real* soundtrack that might've been promising given a little more time. This one was a real disappointment to me, considering how great the *real* soundtrack was. Save your money and instead try to find some Geinoh Yamashirogumi CDs that you can get imported from Japan. I'd reccommend Ecophony Rinne and Ecophony Gaia in a heartbeat; good luck finding them, though.
Haunting, pulse pounding music........1999-09-09
An erie assortment of sounds. Drum beats coupled with sound clips. As haunting as the movie that inspired it.
