We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

It's rare to see two marquee-name composers credited for a score, but perhaps two people were needed to come up with something that would stand up to the memory of Danny Elfman's work on the 1989 Batman. Just as director Christopher Nolan's back-in-black approach is quite different from Tim Burton's phantasmagorical one, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's take doesn't bear much kinship to Elfman's. (You'd be hard-pressed to find any recognizable theme here, for instance.) Mostly the composers remain conservatively subtle, though coming up with the expected pounding on grandiose, action-y selections such as "Myotis" and "Antrozous" (no, the poetic-sounding track names aren't lifted from old Cocteau Twins records but refer to various types of bats). Stand-out track "Tadarida" incorporates some of the distorted vocal effects associated with the Scarecrow's drug-induced nightmarish visions. Atmospheric to the point of evanescence sometime, the individual tracks tend to meld into each other after a while. The sense of stylistic continuity helps establish an overall mood, but sometimes it's hard to distinguish between shades of black. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars A Different Approach to the Batman Scoring Franchise.......2007-02-19

We all remember Danny Elfman's exciting, legendary score to the original Batman film, as well as the not as good, but still holds its own, sequel score 3 years later. We also remember Elliot Goldenthal's 2 excellent scores to the later Batman films in the late 20th century. Now, we are in a new century, yet going to the beginning of Batman and how he transformed into the dark knight.
With that said, the somewhat surprising composers for the film, as well as the upcoming sequel, are Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, 2 somewhat unique choices in that their writing styles are both so different. Whereas, Zimmer's role in the film is primarily in the action domain, Howard's role is primarily in the more lush, thematic domain. Since I am familiar with both composers' works, it is fairly easy to discern both composers throughout the score. Interestingly, all of the cues in the score are named after Latin species of bats, which won't mean much to you unless you are a die-hard fan of real bats.
Musically speaking, there are no rousing superhero themes as in the Elfman and Goldenthal scores. Rather, the intent here is to provide a more atmospheric approach to the film as Batman slowly transforms into his role. With that said, it then makes sense why the legendary Batman theme is absent, as Batman is not fully the dark knight we are accustomed to in this film as of yet. The first and last tracks begin and end, respectively, with electronic heartbeat effects, resembling the sound of a bat soaring through the air. Zimmer takes the lead in cues such as "Myotis", the second half of "Barbastella", "Antrozous", and "Molossus", with his usual fast paced brass and electronic percussion, reminiscent of his previous scores, namely The Rock and The Peacemaker. Howard takes the lead in cues such as "Eptisicus", "Macrotus", "Colynorhinus", the first half of "Barbastella", and "Tadarida". His work is very lush and beautiful, something we can expect from his previous works, but not something you would expect in a Batman film.
All in all, a very pleasant surprise with both composers contributions to the score. I certainly look forward to these two guys working together again in the future as they are both very gifted and talented composers. Their work together here proves that they can collaborate great together as well as individually.

I know it's kind of late for a review on this but I like to see my name next to this soundtrack. The scores are good and they fit the movie like a glove but The theme for the movie is probably the best for a movie I have ever heard. I think it is Molosuss on the soundtrack. I am a huge fan of Batman so I thought I would put in my 2 cents. I also recommend the Winged Migration soundtrack and the Hulk soundtrack.

For the times this album in my opinion sales were boosted by the success of the film.

"Batman" soundtrack fully produced and recorded by Prince is by far one of the 90's best soundtracks, however it is a B-list album with B-list songs.

Prince went out of his way to ensure this album had his personal touch to it and he succeeded at it masterfully.

The album is a mix of Funk and R&B. The only track worth really listening to is "Scandalous" which is a slow ballad that has Prince's signature pure fallsetto.

At anyrate, this album is worth buying for any Prince fan. But, if a friend has it and wants to get get rid of it, just get it for free!
This album is however extremely hard to find on P2P networks, so forget about that avenue of approach!

"On the One"

Bought this CD for my husband, 1 because he loves Batman and 2 he requested it on his Christmas list!! He loves it. It's a great CD if you love the soundtrack from Batman (with Jack Nicholson) and you are a big fan of Prince.

Just to make things clear, I've never owned any Prince albums, and therefore can't consider myself a fan. Most people seem to judge these songs by comparison to his other work, but I'm speaking from a completely neutral point of view when I say: This album is great! I remember I bought this back in the early 90s thinking it was Danny Elfman's score to the film, and returned it when I realized it was actually a soundtrack by Prince. So, over a decade later, when I read that Jack Nicholson himself supported the use of Prince's talent for some of the movie's music, I figured why not give it a shot? I figured right!

All nine tracks have their own style and place, but the best ones are full of dance-able funk and hook, like "The Future", "Electric Chair", "Partyman", "Trust", and "Batdance" (you gotta dig that breakdown). It has that feel-good electronic goove that's the epitome of 80's pop music. And as a nice little touch, there are several songs that use audio clips from the film (namely Nicholson's Napier/Joker character) that really keep the Bat-atmosphere alive. I've long been a fan of Gotham's characters as well as Jack Nicholson, and now, through this, I think Prince may hold a spot on my list. Basically said, "Batman" The Soundtrack is a must for anyone who loved the movie!

I bought the Batman Soundtrack for one track: Scandalous.

It's my 2nd favorite Prince song. (If I Was Your Girlfriend is 1st) It's so sexy and brooding. I just love the music; and the lyrics sound like they were written for a woman to sing, which makes it even more seductive.

Of course, even when you buy an album for one song, there's almost always other songs you end up liking as well. Batdance is good even though it's a cut and paste of other song clips and dialogue. Lemon Crush, Partyman, and Vicki Waiting are also cool. Arms of Orion is nice even if a little sappy. The rest are listenable but don't stick with you.

No one will confuse the Batman music here with Purple Rain's, but it's a nice pick up for earnest Prince fans, or people who just want Batdance and Scandalous, which were left off Prince's The Hits/B-sides greatest hits collection.

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

For anyone with even a passing interest in film scores, or even music in general, this is must-own. Danny Elfman's score for Tim Burton's first (and best) Batman film is, in a word, magnificent. Inspired, memorable, and moving, Elfman's score is easily one of the greatest soundtracks in cinema history. Although fantastic if listened to alone, the way this music is used in the film itself elevates what is other-wise a very good movie into a great one. This score compliments the film so well, it's frightening. The main theme is a perfect reflection of Batman himself: it's majestic and powerful,yet tortured and dark.

This gothic, elegaic score is easily one of the finest soundtracks ever written, and stands as a testament to the power and importance music holds in the world of movies. You'd do yourself a tremendous service to buy this soundtrack, and at this price, you'd be hard pressed to find a reason not to.

I thought the Batman score was brilliant, although some of the music that they had from the 1989 movie wasn't on the CD. For example, the bit at the beginning when the boy and his parents got mugged in the alley way. Jack meets up with Eckhart. The Axis Chemical plan with boss Carl Grissham. And a few others that I thought should be good enough to be on the CD.
My favorite would have to be all of it, but track no. 17 would have to be my pick where the Joker and Vicky Vale going up Gotham City Cathedral and definately The Waltz (track no.18). I loved the Smiley tune that was not on the CD but in the movie where the Joker interrupts the news footage advertising his new Joker brand. That's tune's really fun to listen to. If you loved the movie, then this would be an ideal CD for you. Don't be dissapointed though that some music from the movie is not on the CD because it is still good to listen to.

What more is there to say about Danny Elfman's Batman score? It's one of the most popular and well-known scores of all time. Thousands of people have written their opinions of it. What more can I say? I can say how it affected me personally. It was the first movie score I ever bought, and it was brought to my attention from my dad when we watched the film together as he said "listen to this music in the opening credits Riley". Since then, my score collection has expanded 400 times, and my life and filmmaking career have thrived because of it.
What can I say, really? I can't continue to bore you with pointless anecdotes. I can say that this music is incredible and still in my top 5 of all time. It's Elfman's best work. It's heroic, it's dark, it's thematic (I dare you not to whistle the Batman theme when this CD is over), it's operatic, it's over-the-top, it's action packed, it's brilliant from start to finish. There isn't any wasted space on this album. Elfman has a job to do, and does it with rarely elsewhere seen success. He practically created this idea of a "dark superhero theme", and while the movie was a slight dissappointment, this CD continues to thrill people of any generation.
What can I say? This score is a masterpiece. End of discussion.

I can't believe I'm writing a review for Danny Elfman's best score and the single, greatest heroic score written for a comic book hero . . .

Elfman's orchestral powerhouse begins immediately with the main theme. Elfman does let us breath sometimes but the finale takes the energy out of you!

I bought this cd at 6 of november 2005 in Malaysia(Iam a Malaysian.).the same day i bought the batman movie.after watching the movie,i listen to the soundtrack cd.It was great( I gave it 5 stars)but some parts of the music in the soundtrack cd was missing.eg.1.the scene where batman appears in the batwing going towards Gotham City After the joker arrives in Gotham City trowing money.The music was not included.2.The scene where batman cuts the ballons loose.The music was included but cut short.and 3.The scene where the batwing flys towards the moon and makes a bat man logo.the music was included but cut short.Pls watch the following scenes and listen to the soundtrack again.Say the following music was not or there must be something wrong withmy cd.pls make a review after you done this.Thank You.

I thought the first movies scores were great, but the scores for this movie blew me away. Of course they have Batman's perfect theme from the first movie, but the the themes for the new villians (The Penguin Catwomen) are just as great as Batman's. I think the theme for the Penguin is one of my favorite movie scores of all time. This is a great soundtrack that everyone should enjoy.

This has got to be one of the best movie scores i have ever had the pleasure of hearing in my LIFE. i love both of Tim Burtons Batman movies and Elmans score in both of them are just superb. but in THIS one, he totally outdoes himself. what an opening to this GREAT film, and elfmans music makes it even BETTER, as if those terric visuals werent enough. this music matches the film expertly, and it makes me excited everytime i watch it. the opening with the Penguin floating into the sewer, combined with elfmans AMAZING Batman theme, the buildup, everything! its pure cinamatic magic, and Burton is simply only HALF of the greatness your watching. elfmans themes here are more emotional and at times, sadder then the first batman film. to me, this batman feels more like a real batman film, more of a RAW experince. its still in this fanstasy, nightmarish gotham city, and elfmans really plays with that, making gotham into a real scary, clostraphobic (sp?) enviroment where you could believe Batman would be stalking. the reviewer who said this film is "horrendous" is just plain wrong, cuz not only is the music amazing, but the film itself is just an EXPERIENCE. this is a sountrack that not just every Batman fan should own, but every fan of classical music. its THAT good. elfmans score here isso many things. its deep, emotinal, majestic, quirky, fun, heroic, sad, pessimistic, DARK, and so RICH. it has layers and layers of different themes and motifs. its just a work of pure ART, much like the film itself. a dark dream of heroes, villians, dark angels, frightning landscapes. its just Dark music at its best. i agree with the reviewer who said that elfman is the ONLY man to score superhero movies. he can be light, dark, and VERY dark. i prefer VERY dark, lol. i rented Batman Begins a while ago and i must say, while the film itself was lackluster and pretty horrible, one of its biggest flaws was the music score. it was very mch clich'ed, overly emotional and just didnt feel........BATMAN enough. it wasnt very dark, and it felt more like newton and howard or whoever did it were scoreing a spierman movie or a superman mvoie, not Batman. i was very dissapointed with the new batman movie, and while it wasnt as crappy as "batmanb and Robin", the movie and the score idnt pack a punch like the first 2 burton films had. it just was not good. if the music in a movie aint good, its likely the movie will suffer IMO. once again, Elfman proves that he can do just about anything that is DARK, GRITTY, and GOTHIC. and the end song called "face to face" is also a real heartbreaker. it is a very sensual, sad, yet playful song that, by the sound of thelyrics, is supposed to reflect Catwomans thought about "duality" with her normal self and her Catwoman self, much like Batman himself. its a great song that perfectly compliments the Batman/Catwoman relationship we see brilliantly potrayed in the movie. the song is played in the scene when Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle meet at the Masqurade Ball and they discover each others secret identities. one of my all time FAVORITE scenes and this song just makes it better. i LOVEthis movie, and this Elfmans BRILLIANT score makes it a winner. last though: Burton + Elfman = BATMAN!!. PICK UP THIS SOUNDTRACK AND MOVIE RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!!

"Batman Returns" has one of the most interesting Hollywood film scores of all time. It followed the enchanting, groundbreaking work Elfman did on Edward Scissorhands. Now, he was to marry this lush, delicate sound with his thunderous work for Batman. From the beginning of the gorgeous ad campaign, "Batman Returns" looked to be a spectacular film.

Unfortunately, this did not prove to be the case, and as of 2006 it is rarely thought of highly if at all. Yet there was Danny Elfman's score, an exhilerating work by a maturing, brilliant composer.

The opening notes of Track #1 set the tone for the entire film, and are a perfect melding of the Scissorhands choral work and the sinister lurkings of Gotham. Most importantly, like a truly magnificent composer, Elfman builds distinctive, powerful themes for the two villains that serve as extreme counterpoint to the Batman theme.

Selina's transformation is undoubtedly the high point of the film, and this is primarily because Elfman delivers a tour-de-force of strings; his soundtrack elicits all of the torment and anger inherent in the birth of a super-villain. It is the only moment of true emotion in the film, and is as dark as anything to be seen in a major Hollywood blockbuster.

What a shame that Daniel Waters and Tim Burton made such a mess of this franchise just as it was getting its legs. The plot is beyond ridiculous, DeVito is painfully unfunny, Batman barely shows up for his own movie, the one-liners are weak, Walken seems like he's from another film, it's crowded with too many characters, "attack penguins"? Just listen to the soundtrack instead...

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this,then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

For those who are interested in Elliot Goldenthal's score from Batman & Robin, there was an EXTREMELY LIMITED release of the complete score for collectors. I've seen asking prices as low as $57.00 up to $80.00 for a copy of the 2-disk CD. I happen to own one of the copies so I can tell you a thing or two about it; first of all, Goldenthal borrows a number of cues from his previous work on Batman Forever so you will hear some recycled material. There are some tracks that are worth playing over and over again (such as "Costume Ball") and then there are others that you'll skip every time you play it.....but with 28 tracks total, you'll have plenty to listen to! I personally enjoy Danny Elfman's work best of all (Batman, Batman Returns) but Goldenthal takes the music in new directions.

The End is the Beginning is the End is so good. the rest are all... meh... if you are a Smashing Pumpkins fan like myself, buy this, because those 2 songs are worth it. They pretty much sounds like Jellybelly meets Stand Inside Your Love, or something.

The American moviegoing public really has completely lost its grasp upon what a 'FILM' is. America is uber-obsessed with 'MOVIES' - you know, lets blow up some trucks and make sure our protagonist falls in love with a beautiful blonde bombshell. What America doesn't understand anymore is that MOVIES can be art - they can be FILMS. They can be substantative, evocative, heartbreaking meditations on the human condition. 'BATMAN AND ROBIN' is one of these FILMS, though it has never even been touched by snooty (and misinformed) American critics, who would rather run out and see the new Bertolucci of Jarmusch film. Go to Italy, the country that PRACTICALLY INVENTED MOVING CINEMA, and you will read a much different story. They appreciate this film - all good films - as the true art that they can be.

Ok, though, enough ranting LOL. Seriously, I just sometimes get SO P.O'd BY AMERICAN IDIOTS LOLOL! This soundtrack is pretty good. Not necessarilly my favorite music, but I do not feel that this should be how a SOUNDTRACK IS CONSIDERED. I mean, seriously people. THIS MUSIC PROPPELED THE FILM PRETTY BRILLIANTLY! It's almost impossible to imagine this film - which I consider has been unjustly robbed of being considered brilliant - without the relatively brilliant (contextually) soundtrack. Perhaps not worth buying, I mean, I barely listen to this one anymore, but worth checking out, if only to remember your firsttime seeing B+R. A powerful accompaniment.

Since this album is such an eclectic mix, I have a hard time believing that anyone could like all of the songs. Most will probably only like a few of them. For me, those songs were "Lazy Eye", "Gotham City", "Foolish Games".

However, these songs weren't the CD's real saving grace. What I actually thought was cool was that the Batman instrumental theme was on this disc. However, after opening with some decent tunes and then hitting these bright spots, I felt that the album generally goes downhill. Maybe I just don't dig this kind of music, but I sure didn't find myself singing along, that's for sure.

I bought this when I was five years old. I LIKED (past tense) only one song and that would be track 13: "Elliot Goldenthal: A Batman Overture". But now that I listned more carefully, I realize there are good song on this album:

1.- "The Smashing Pumpking: The End Is The Begining Is The End".- A very strange title. I like this song, but it has a grissly intro.- 4/5.

2.- "Bone Thugs 'N' Harmony: Look Into My Eyes".- A good song. Finally an unbulgar rap song.- 4/5.

3.- "R. Kelly: Gotham City".- This one is one of the best songs on this album. I like this kind of songs, calmed and relaxing and a little joyfull.- 5/5.

4.- "Arkarna: House On Fire".- Don't like this kind of songs that much.- 2/5.

5.- "R.E.M.: Revolution".- I love this song. Very much. A great one on this album.- 5/5.

6.- "Jewel: Foolish Games".- I also like this one just as much as "R. Kelly: Gotham City".- 5/5.

7.- "Goo Goo Dolls: Lazy Eye".- I love this song as much as "R.E.M.: Revolution".- 5/5.

8.- "Lauren Christy: Breed".- Good song, but not as good as "R. Kelly: Gotham City".- 3/5.

9.- "Soul Coughing: The Bug".- I do not like this one. Too strange.- 2/5.

10.- "Moloko: Fun For Me".- I don't like this one either.- 2/5.

11.- "Me'shell Ndegéocello: Poison Ivy".- A strange song. I'm not that much of a fan of this one.- 3/5.

12.- "Eric Benét: True To Myself".- As good as "R. Kelly: Gotham City".- 5/5.

13.- "Elliot Goldenthal: A Batman Overture".- O.K. When I was five, I loved this song, I played it all day. But now I hate this kind of songs (composed with symphonys and specialy for the motion picture) and realize there are better songs on this album. Such as "Gotham City", "Revolution", "True To Myself", "Lazy Eye", "Foolish Game", etc.- 3/5


14.- "Underworld: Moaner".- Horrible. Bad. The worst on this album. I hate this kind of songs.- 0/5.

15.- "The Smashing Pumpkins: The Beggining Is The End Is The Beggining".- This song is the same as the first track on this album, but slower and darker. If you notice in the title from the first song: where it says beggining, on the last track says end...anyway, I stick to the first version.- 3/5.


O.K. So this album is not that great, but for me, this one is the best banda sonora fo all MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACKS I own. It has more variation and great songs. If you want to buy this album, then buy it, but...if you don't...then I understand why.
Anyway, my point here is that I HATE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACKS, but I think this one is an exception.

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Whether you loved Batman Forever ot hated it, I think there's one thing that can't be overlooked: Elliot Goldenthal's outstanding score. Danny Elfman (the scorist of the first two Batman films) is a wonderful musician, and is by all counts hard to live up to when it comes to taking over his work in the late 80s/early 90s Batman franchise. His theme was iconic and his atmospheric brilliance undeniable. How could Goldenthal follow up without seeming completely insuperior? This is how! Batman Forever: Original Motion Picture Score is proof that amazing action/adventure music is still alive. In some spots it is dark and brooding, in others it is bright and triumphant. And as a whole it is some of the best superhero -- and villain -- music you could ask for. From the superb theme, to the whacky Riddler cues, to the darkly insane pieces for TwoFace, it's everything done right. Blaring, uncomprimising brass sections, thundering, blood-pumping percussion, heroic, flying strings, and spiraling, jumpy woodwinds all combine to make a strong, exciting score that is a must have for any collector of Bat-music. In short, this CD is worth every penny! Experience Batman and his colorful enemies in audio form with Goldenthal's music today! It's fun and dark in all one.

A large change came to the Batman series. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton had wanted to move on, so they ended after two large successes. Also leaving was Danny Elfman, who probably saw no reason to go on without Burton. As a result a new director, Batman, and composer entered the history of the caped crusader: Joel Schumacher, Val Kilmer, and the person who concerns us the most, Elliot Goldenthal. Goldenthal was hired after Joel Schumacher heard tapes of his Demolition Man and Interview with a Vampire scores, being impressed.

Elliot Goldenthal is known for his very interesting movie scores, which have been both reviled and praised at the same time. He actually had a tighter-than -usual schedule for Batman Forever, but he said that it was quite simple to do the score. His reasoning is that the format is the hero is the hero and the villain is the villain, basically meaning that he just needed to develop themes for each character. His music, however, is not so simple. His unique, original, and creative style has gone under fire, but this is mostly due to bat-fans angered over the abandonment of Elfman's theme.

Elliot Goldenthal's Batman theme was inspired by the sounds of kids humming music to match their action figures' deeds. What results is a very great heroic march, although it doesn't have the tragic undertones of Elfman's work. Variations of the theme are heard throughout the entire soundtrack. At first it is played at its best in "Main Titles and Fanfare", but it pops up as a quick, more heroic march in "Fledermausmarschmusik". Other big variations are heard in "Descent", "Chase Noir", and "Mr. E's Dance Card".

The second most prominent theme is that for Two-Face, the secondary villain who has half of his face disfigured by a chemical solution. It is supposedly intentional that his music is more mediocre to create a classical feel for the movie. I actually like it a lot. The best display of his theme is in "Two-Face Three-Step", which is very demented.

The third most used theme is the music for Jim Carrey's show-stealing Riddler. This is the perfect theme for an evil Jim Carrey. As with Two-Face, the Riddler has a track that displays his theme to good effect. This long track, "Nygma Variations" has been criticized as being unlistenable, but I have no problem with it. The music builds and builds, using violins, wacky orchestrations, and classic sci-fi alien themes.

Less interesting is the Love Theme, showing the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dr. Chase Meridian. Actually, the Love Theme is a variation of the Batman theme. "Chase Noir", "Chase Blanc", and "Mouth to Mouth Nocturne" get the most tiring after repeated listenings.

Another major theme is actually not for any character (Robin sort of shares the Batman theme) introduced in the movie, but is a piece for action scenes. The Gotham City Boogie theme is heard two times, once in a track of the same name, and in "Perpetuum Mobile". In the latter, weird use of a synthesizer produces an odd effect to accompany the scene where one of Two-Face's goons is electrocuted.

Other noteworthy pieces include "Under the Top", the second longest part of music, a thirty second piece that begins almost halfway on "Holy Rusted Metal", and my favorite: "Victory". What I love about "Victory" is that the music practically tells the short fight in the movie involving two-Face throwing fire at Batman. For the first twenty or so seconds, Two-Face's theme accompanies the fiend and his thugs running. Batman's theme comes up as the dark knight gives chase, only to flop when he is lured down a large tube. Perilous music then comes on as Two-Face fires a burst of flame towards our hero. The music gets frantic by the second until Batman and his fanfare burst through the flames of death. I won't go on about the last minute of this awesome track.

All in all, Goldenthal doesn't surpass Elfman in bat-scores, but he produces very original music. Also, the album has a cool insert with dozens of photos from the movie. This is a rare CD and I had a hard time getting one, but it was well worth the effort.

This is not Elfman but Elliot does add something to Batman's dark world: noir. Ths film score adds to the noir feeling and includes the gothic sounds absent in the film. [Gothic is what the film lacked because Schumacher's Gotham is too bright].

Now, Elliot does present a somewhat good theme for the Dark Knight, but the theme, along with the action music, becomes used ever so much. By "Batterdamerung" [or whatever], you become tired and annoyed.

I still bought this CD because I'm a score collector and since this score is becoming rare, get it while you can. Otherwise, skip this one and purchase Elfman's works for Batman and even get Zimmer's and Howard's take on the dark knight: Batman Begins.

2 out of 5 stars Bombastic, overdone score that is unenjoyable........2005-02-21

A follow up to Batman Returns, Batman Forever is the first score written by Elliot Goldenthal who begins with a decent main theme that gets lost in bombastic rattles and clangs. Sometimes this score sounds more like a dryer full of quarters set on tumble. Overall I don't believe that this is a very good score and since I own over 350 of them, I speak with some authority.

I bought this cd for two reasons: 1. I collect all superhero music; 2. I liked the Two-Face theme. However, Goldenthal is all wrong for Batman! His music is always on the technical side and doesn't actually try to understand the characters, but is just weird for weirdness' sake. Elfman always writes his music with the emotions of the characters in mind, something Goldenthal doesn't even seem to care about. His Batman theme is too campy(with the exception of the first track which is pretty good, but not great,) the Riddler music is just plain annoying, His circus music is woefully inadequate, and his action music is all noise and no substance( even Elfman's noisy cues contain substance!). The Two-Face music is the most interesting theme on this cd even though it is a little silly for a disfigured and brooding character. If you want good superhero music, check out Batman, Batman Returns, or either Spiderman scores, coincidentally all Elfman!
