Tellingly, director Richard Linklatter's Dazed and Confused was released 20 years after American Grafitti and offers a similar story of troubled young personalities lurking beneath an oversaturated pop culture veneer. Like Lucas before him, Linklatter clearly relishes that gloss and wields it like an ironic chainsaw. His soundtrack is a raucous, authentic collection of mid-70's radio fare, be it sharp-edged pop (Sweet, the vastly underrated Rick Derringer), nascent metal (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) and out-and-out hard cheese (Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas). Dazed and Confused is the real sound of 70's teenage America. --Jerry McCulley

Flashback.......2007-03-28
Loved the CD. The music is a much fun as it was the first time I enjoyed it!
Dazed and Confused soundtrack.......2007-03-26
I loved the movie and I love the soundtrack. Contains all those songs from the 1970s that were very "feel good". Also highly recommended is the companion CD which contains more songs that this one couldn't fit. Recommend both of them.
"DAZED AND CONFUSED ABOUT THE ADVERTISING".......2007-03-15
I was looking to get the DVD of DAZED AND CONFUSED but got the CD. When it was advertised on the AMAZON website it led me to believe that it was a DVD as you see it above. (1993 Film) I had to return it and my expense. Very disappointing transaction with AMAZON. Threfore, i am not impressed.
Great soundtrack!.......2006-11-03
I've owned this terrific CD since waaaay back in 1993 & have lost my numerous copies purchased since then to dear friends & family who come to adore this soundtrack once they've heard it. It's full of great middle & late '70s tunes that if you were alive & aware of hit rock n roll music then, you will remember these tunes with joy & may even sing along to them too. This CD even has "Cherry Bomb" by the Runaways (Joan Jett & Lita Ford's band before they went solo) which is not an easy tune to find in complitations. If you liked the non-disco & non-"AM Gold" sounds of the 70's then this is your next CD purchase! : D The tunes range from Black Sabbath's Paranoid, to Foghat's Slow Ride to the ever popular rock anthem Kiss' Rock & Roll All Night. I love this CD,when I play it the songs take me right back to being a pre-teen/teenager hanging out with the older kids in the shag-van, the smell of ganja wafting around, real rock n roll blaring from the speakers, Ditto jeans, halter tops, Friday nights at the roller skating rink & Pop-rocks! LOL
Inhale the 70s All Over Again.......2006-10-30
I was the stereotypical 70s kid. I had long, feathered blonde hair that blew freely in the wind, I wore Hang Ten T-shirts and cut off Levi jeans shorts and spent a lot of time listening to the music of Ted Nugent, Black Sabbath, and the Runaways. Like most people reviewing this collection, it threw me back to that time where everything was kind of just 'out there'. I don't know what that really means, I just get this feeling that a lot of the music that I hear on the radio today has no real spirit...no soul...no backbone. They might as well be singing, "Oh yeah, gimme a contract and gimme lots of money, so I can be on 'Cribs' and show the world my honey..."
Yeah. Exactly. It is that lame.
Even as I entered into High School in late 1979, I could tell that music was changing and although there were a few standouts, the Police, for example, loud and crazy rock 'n roll went through a period of hiding out. It wasn't until the 'Grunge Era' of the early 90s that slapped people in the face and said, "We're back...burn your Depeche Mode albums and listen to some real rock 'n roll..."
By that time, even though I really liked Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. I had gotten into jazz and funk and soul music, but whenever I reached for 'classic rock', I always reached for my albums of the 70s. The kind of the stuff on this CD. And I think about those days that were such a mixture of saddness and gladness and combustible hormones. I think about how if just one single thing were different, how my whole life would've been different. Yeah, okay...you got me...I "inhaled"... but I inhaled life...all of life and I'm glad that I am who I am today because of the stuff that moved me in the past...
So buy this great soundtrack and inhale some pretty cool music and exhale a feeling that you survived that great and crazy time known as the 70s. Oh, and by the way, the only reason I'm giving it four stars and not five is because there are no Alman Brothers on this thing...c'mon, dude, the Alman Brothers helped make the 70s...
Have a nice day.
Peace & Blessings

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Not as good as the film..........2007-05-06
I remembered the music in the movie as being a little better than it actually is. I was a little disappointed in the CD.
disappointing.......2007-03-26
It just wasn't what I thought it would be and I personally didn't like it. But it is good music.
it's all about the Malagueña.......2004-12-01
i loved the movie and the music there is good. i really like the Malagueña so i learned how to play it on guitar. the song is great i enjoyed the movie as much as i enjoyed the sound track
Start to Finish, a Real Mexi-CAN of a Soundtrack.......2004-11-30
Alright, so the main reason I got the soundtrack was Pistolero by Juno Reactor,a real driving, pumped-up techno song. I started to get into the rest of the music on the soundtrack, and I find it an essential cd I carry along with me. The great thing about this soundtrack is you can listen in on Mexican traditional music and a glimpse of the culture, and still have some real badass-sounding guitar! Whatever you may think of the film, you can imagine the actors playing their parts in your head, since they play and sing in the soundtrack (as the first one). There is an aura in the music I can't put my finger on; there's a history, an old feel to it, but it lingers with new musical ideas. Kinda like the movie, in terms of making it. I agree fullheartedly with previous reviews: where the movie fails, the music fills in the gaps and expands on Mexican music, making the entire movie/soundtrack experience very deep and epic. I dunno, maybe I'm rambling, but I emphasize that this soundtrack adds culture and kickass to your collection, as it did mine.
Better than the movie!.......2004-11-21
When I first saw this film I was shocked at its total stupidity. I was a big fan of the first Desperado and this sequel completely choked my enthusiasm. One thing that was good about this film though was the music. I have to admit it, the music was excellent and in harmony with the motion picture. The best tracks on this CD are Traeme Paz, El Mariachi and Siente Mi Amor (Salma Hayek brings out the best in her sensuality in this song). I'm not a big fan of Latino music but some of these songs are so beautiful they deserve to be listened to. Yo Te Quiero and Cuka Rocka both are well known songs and excellent to dance to, while Flor Del Mal is a very nice and chilling ballad. This CD is a great addition to your music collection, don't hesitate to buy it.

Customer Reviews:
Another one of those "ya had to have been there" albums!.......2006-07-29
Though the movie from whence comes the music on the album is a classic in its own right, the soundtrack is more a time capsule of what we listened to and danced to in 1991. Most of the artists/groups found on the release have either moved on to bigger and better things (Ice-T, Gerald Levert, and multi-talented Queen Latifah), are still recording with lesser success (Johnny Gill with "New Edition" and Keith Sweat), or have faded into relative obscurity (Color Me Badd, Troop, Guy, and 2 Live Crew).
But, in their day, they ruled the airwaves.
Ironically, the song that is the most dated is the sole remake: "For the Love of Money/Living For the City (Medley)". While the two in their respective original forms are just as thrilling today as they were three decades ago, the "new jack swing" version found on the soundtrack pales in comparison, which bears evidence to the fact that some songs cannot be remade.
But, honestly, the album is a good companion to a great film and that's all that can be asked of it.
H-U-S-T-L-E-R hustler. .......2006-05-08
This is a soundtrack I've had for years but really rarely play. The truth is it's pretty good all the way through, but only 3-4 tracks stand-out to me. Obviously the Ice-T "New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme)" is awesome, and was kind of the unofficial theme of the movie. "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd may seem cheesy now, but was huge at the time, and I actually still like it. Then there's "For The Love Of Money/Living For The City" with that unmistakeable opening, a good track for the film and greed in general. The rest is a mix of R&B/Soul and light rap, all decent, but nothing too amazing. Overall I guess this serves as a good time-capsule for 1991 if nothing else, in the genres anyway. Well worth the 94 cents it's currently going for used.
New Jack City is still going on?.......2006-03-21
New Jack City is one of the movies that really made me realize what was going on out there in the streets. Another reality is that these things are still going on today as I am typing this review. There will always be a Nino Brown with a fly girlfriend on his side. All of this is simply life period and what more can I say besides the movie is great. I look at all the people who are now older and doing their thing. We really don't see Wesly Snipes like we used to. Ice T is doing his thing with "Law & Order", Vanessa Williams has finished her work on the "Soul Food Series", Christopher Williams is missing in action for whatever reason, but he is still a nice looking man, Allen Payne was really good in "Blue Hill", Michael Michelle is doing her thing. The movie has really shined the light on life in America along with how neighborhoods do in fact change. There will always be the "Pookies" too. Great movie, outstanding cast and script.
Still a slammin' soundtrack! .......2004-11-07
I still talk about this soundtrack album a good 13 years later. I've already worn out the original CD I bought in '91 and I'm trying to get another one. This one was loaded with funky new jack swing numbers like Christopher Williams,F.S. Effect, Guy (too funky), Color Me Badd's bass heavy track, underrated Danny Madden's Facts of Love, Ice-T's aggressive New Jack Hustler and others! The ballads are nice--Johnny Gill's ballad gives Keith Sweat's some stiff competition! 2 Live Crew's somber, message-driven In The Dust is a smart alternative to their sex-driven songs. And the surprise here was the Troop/Levert/Queen Latifah song For the Love Of Money, a strong mix of soulful R&B and the Queen's no-nonsense hip-hop style. This really was a hot song using the rap/R&B collaboration style that Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Ja Rule, Ashanti and a number of artists use today! Phenomenal soundtrack with some gritty, urban, hard hitting beats and rhythms!
One Of The Better New Jack Era Soundtracks.......2003-09-17
In 1991, you make a soundtrack with names like Johnny Gill, Color Me Badd, Keith Sweat, Guy, Ice-T, and 2 Live Crew its going to attract mainstream audience's. Its a really good cross-section of Rap, house, and R&B styles (New Jack Swing Era) in keeping with the attitude of the flick. The album kicks off right with a visceral cry of urban-poor rage, Ice-T's "New Jack Hustler," (also a perceptive linkage between the United States' capitalist, materialist values and the drug-pushing, murder, and gang warfare that runs rampant in its inner cities), and the one album wonder's F.S. Effect convey the same type of energy with "Get It Together (Black Is A Force)." Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill provide two of the finest numbers on this collection; Gill's "I'm Still Waiting," is one of the more popular songs the one time New Edition member recorded, and Sweat's "(There You Go) Tellin' Me No Again," is one of the better New Jack Ballads of the early '90s. While Guy's "New Jack City," and Troop's cover of the O'Jays' "For The Love Of Money," titled "For the Love of Money/Living for the City," are the albums better New Jack Swing moments; Aaron Hall's vocals are in prime form, sounding dope. Uptown vocalist Christopher Williams contributes a well put together (vocally) song, "I'm Dreaming," and the soundtrack also contains Color Me Badd's huge mid-tempo hit "I Wanna Sex You Up." The disappointment in the rap area is "In The Dust," from 2 Live Crew, seems to be the soundtrack's throwaway, but the very underrated Danny Madden's "Facts Of Life," (heavily influenced by the ojays) derserved more attention, because he wasn't a Guy or Babyface clone. Essence, A Dutch group that sounds exactly/shockingly like The Cure, also contributes to the soundtrack with "Lyrics 2 the Rhythm."

A good value.......2007-05-17
I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

The Farrelly brothers, who brought us Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary, have written a humorous tale starring Alec Baldwin, Shawn Hatosy, and George Wendt about a kid whose blue-collar dad ships him off to a prep school to learn how the better half lives. Plenty of classic rock accompanies the kid's travails since the movie has been set in the early 1970s, when The Eagles, Paul McCartney and Wings, and Steely Dan were the obvious soundtrack to one's coming of age. The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" leads things off (much as it summed things up for Spike Lee's Summer of Sam). Free's classic rock staple "All Right Now" (the predecessor to Bad Company) is a natural, as is Lee Michael's rough and tumble "Do You Know What I Mean." And while "Stairway to Heaven" doesn't make an appearance, you can still flick your Bic to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." --Rob O'Connor

This is an awesome collection of classic rock! Great Tunes, Good Times, Picm this up if you're into REAL rock n' Roll!
After 30 YEARS, I get it ALL! Thank you!.......2003-12-31
"Dancin' In the Moonlight" is MY song! I've waited so long to get this one hit wonder song on a good compilation album. In fact, I ordered it because it was on this one! This song has always screamed "happy" and taken me back to a favorite time in my life (one not filled with anyone in particular, but just singular happy moments and dreams of what "might be"). Of course, I know all of the other hits too. This album runs the gamut from my early teens right through my college years. I remember dancing to all of these at many a frat party. Incredible grouping of some fantastic songs! I'm sending this one to my best friend. Won't HE be surprised? Man, this one REALLY takes me back......and back.....and back........shhhhh.....gotta go dance now! (BIG GRIN!)
Roundabout.......2003-08-18
The answer to the question of the song playing in the guy's room when they get busted by Funderdurk is called Roundabout by YES.
The Best.......2002-04-07
This is 1 of the best soundtracks ever. every song on here is a classic. from start to finish it is sheer classicness. There could've been more songs but most CDs could have more songs.
Does any one know the song that was playing on the record player when they all got busted by Mr Funderburk in their dormroom?
Outside of King Harvest, Providence scores big with me.......2001-10-05
Outside Providence was a good movie, but it has an even better soundtrack with such fine songs as Won't get Fooled Again (The Who), Band on the Run (Wings), Roundabout (Yes), Long Train Runnin' (Doobie Brothers) among many others. One of those soundtrakcs, or even just albums that you can listen to over an over again (as long as you skip song 10). Highly reccomendable, especially for people who do like the music.

Brings me back to my childhood.......2006-11-02
90210 rocked my world as a kid and still does. The soundtrack is cheezy 80's music but come on.....who doesn't want still love all the drama of Brenda and Dylan?
Buy this for the theme song........2005-12-20
I bought this soundtrack and set it as my alarm clock. So every morning when I wake up at 7:15 a.m. I hear " duh nuh nuh nuh, duh nuh nuh nuh!!! CLAP!! CLAP!!" and then I do a ninja flip out of the bed into my slippers and pick up my autographed red and yellow hulk hogan guitar (custom made) and bust into a 3 minute long solo. It's become such a spectacle in my neighborhood that the children at the school bus gather around my front lawn and look into my window to witness such a display musicianship. When I'm done I yell at them to get off my lawn or I'll run them over with my 88 Le Sabre, life is sweet.
Very good album of glossy, slick pop.......2005-09-26
This was a very thought out soundtrack of pop songs with a slickness to them. Standouts were Paula Abdul, Color Me Badd, Jody Watley, Tara Kemp, Shanice's best singing in Saving Forever For You and others. But I liked Jeremy Jordan's The Right Kind of Love and Geoffrey Williams' adventurous Let Me Be Your Baby with its out of nowhere kind of sound. What really made the soundtrack stand out was the wonderful Vanessa Williams/Brian McKnight duet, Love Is. Perfect matchup that boosted both singers' music careers incredibly and gave them more solo hits on their own. I still hear that song a good 13 years later on some radio stations--people still love it. This soundtrack set the tone for more kinds of pop oriented soundtracks in the '90s with the biggest names on the planet on one collection. These days, the NOW series does this method. But this is fun, escapism pop to promote a very popular TV show on Fox, when Jason Priestley's green eyes swooned female viewers.
Disappointed in this..........2004-12-11
Oh sure, there's some good stuff on here, but I bought this hoping there'd be songs performed by Jason Priestly, Tori Spelling, Luke Perry and the others. Are there any songs on here by them? Noooooooo!
I once heard that Ian Ziering can sing a mean version of You Light Up My Life. Why couldn't THAT have been included on this???
I don't know what these record company people were thinking. Sure, it's hard to not like an album with songs by Color Me Bad and Chaka Kahn, but this could have been soooooo much better.
nostalgia - 90s pop music at its best.......2000-09-17
i dont know if its because this album reminds me about a lot of good times but its just an overall great soundtrack. many of the songs hav a great beat and the album itself as a whole is original and colorful. from time to time i listen to the entire cd from paula abdul to the 90210 theme song. i personally think its a model of the early 90s pop music at its best. i will also add that if u were a 90210 fan u will definitely not regret buying the album.

Customer Reviews:
Keep rolling Stones it's just a shot away!.......2005-06-19
This is not the most complex FST piece. It's not the most surrealistic or sociological. It is however one of their funniest efforts. What really makes it work is the timing and unique intonations between all four members. The performances are flawless. So smooth and confident - it's like listening to a great jazz quartet trading off each other. This is the first FST album I heard as kid back in 1974 and I was instantly hooked on their brand of radio theater. It still sounds fresh today and like most FST pieces with each listen there is always a new esoteric reference you'll pick up or discover some interesting dialog going on underneath the forefront. You'll be quoting this one for years to come.
"Where there's smoke - there's work!"
This CD smokes. Great work. Worth every penny.
Some of the FST's best work.......2002-07-26
Usually this album is omitted in FST discussions, but it ranks with their best. As usual, listen over and over again through headphones; you won't be disappointed. So follow Hemlock Stones the Great Defective as he chases after the Electrician from Ampere Watt, through early 20th century America as it might have been.
A fine Firesign title, though a hair below their best........2002-07-25
"Giant Rat" is the Firesign's Sherlock Holmes parody, originally relased in 1974. At the time, it was viewed as a sort of a "comeback" album as it came shortly after the group had disbanded briefly to pursue solo projects. It didn't make the splash it could've (the following release, "Everything You Know Is Wrong" would fare better) but is still a very funny title. If you know what the Firesign Theatre is all about, then grab without hesitation. For you neophytes, the Firesign Theatre dragged the comedy album into the '60s psychedelic era and beyond, peppering their albums with lofty literary references, drug jokes, bad puns, and a tip of the hat to classic radio. They took full advantage of studio capabilities and multi-tracking, creating a surreal comic landscape that could take you anywhere (from the Academy Awards to War to Indian Reservations to Eastern Europe...). "Rat" is one of their fastest paced entries and owes a lot to the Goon Show. The theme here is power and corruption as famed detective and cokehead Hemlock Stones (Philip Proctor) and his trusty companion Dr. John Flotsam (David Ossman) help filthy rich magnate Jonas Acme (Peter Bergman) recover the stolen "Zeppo Tube" (a powerful invention) from the hands of the maniacal Electrician (Phil Austin). Like a Python film or Kids in the Hall episode, the four members of the troupe essay dozens of roles each, all unique and hilarious. It may be a hair below their greatest work ("How Can You Be In Two Places...," "Don't Crush That Dwarf..."), as it is somewhat less surreal and ambitious, but even their weakest material (and this is NOT their weakest) is better than most everything else that passes for comedy today. Long live the Firesign Theatre!

Large. Apparition. Beast........2006-04-19
Very good stuff here. Not your average surf band. In fact, the traditional surf/reverb sound is toned down, and replaced by a lot more of a distortion sound. If you happen to own the Los Straitjackets 3-D album, think of the first track, Squid, and that should give you a little bit of an idea. Most of this album is very uptempo, so it's perfect for driving and backflipping around your apartment. Too bad these guys will never get famous coz we need more music like this in the world. Kinda makes you wanna watch a Godzilla movie.
Pitchforkmedia.com reviews Daikaiju!!.......2006-01-30
I thought this review said it best of all:
Rating: 7.8
Somewhere along the line, surf music ceased to have anything to do with actual surfing and migrated to kitsch. Dick Dale had "Pipeline", the Surfaris had "Wipe-Out!", and Man...or Astroman? had..."You Can't Get Good Riblets in Space". But although shuddering tremolo bars fit the image of a guy in floral print trunks, the music is mostly instrumental and as such essentially abstract, so you can make it mean anything you want it to. Even early surf rockers like the Ventures and the Tornados realized this and began to incorporate the astronautical, lounge, and kitsch elements that color most efforts in the genre these days.
So the term "surf" as it relates to music today basically just refers to music with lots of reverb and crazy guitar playing, which is fine-- you can acknowledge the roots without trying to turn them into branches. I can say pretty categorically that Croatia's Bambi Molesters are the best surf band in the world today, but given Man...or Astroman?'s long silence, Daikaiju certainly have a claim to the #2 spot. Much like fellow modern surf-rockers Los Straightjackets, the men of Daikaiju keep their identities secret, each represented by a mask in the band's press releases, which also feature a lot of fake Japanese-to-English translations like "Kabuki men deliver most high rocket impact!"
Students of Godzilla, Mothra, and Gamera know that Daikaiju is Japanese for "giant monster," and the Huntsville, Ala., quartet are obviously enamored with the most conspicuous aspects of Japanese popular culture, though they refrain from sticking soundclips from Mechagodzilla sequels all over their albums the way so many other surf groups recently have. They instead opt to let the music speak for itself, and when it does, it's impressive, to say the least. Though their sound is closer to Man...or Astroman? than anything else (it's of course possible that there are members of that band hiding out in their ranks) there's a certain degree of prog muscle behind all that reverbed shredding.
Surf is one of those funny genres where a fan basically knows what to expect and enjoyment comes from hearing it done really well, and Daikaiju delivers on that score, but there is one monumental surprise lurking in this mix in the form of album closer "Farewell to Monster Island". At almost nine minutes long it's nearly four times longer than the average surf instrumental and in place of the manic snare and ride cymbal of a surf beat, the band rides a skanking dub riddim, marrying two genres that in retrospect were born to love each other. The e-bowed interlude is something to hear, but even more impressive is the simple fact that the guitarists hiding behind these masks have a jazz-like sense of how to phrase a solo. The song is the kind of jam that bands just don't do any more, and it sort of makes me wish more would.
So in the end, Daikaiju is an impressive full-length debut for a band that's clearly got more up its sleeve than a few Trashmen 45s and tablature print-outs for "Rabble Rouser". The thing with the masks and stage names like Secret Asian Man and Brain Conflict is frankly little more than a distracting sideshow to the main event, which is of course the band's massive wave of prime surf. Grab your board.

HybridMagazine Review.......2005-09-01
Like me, have you longed for the release of a really great surf rock album? Not a surf rock album that was merely a sterilized distillation of Dick Dale's moments of greatness, but one that reminded how the genre could be freshened up and made viable once again? Perhaps an album that would be as great as the first time that Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet made the world sit up and take notice of Canadian surf, or the first time that Man Or Astroman? grabbed hold of space rock and twanged it into surf? Then, boy have I got just the album for you!
Daikaiju's eponymous release is full to the brim with twanging and boinging guitars, blistering tom rolls, and throbbing basslines. From the very first notes of "Daikaiju Die!" the album is a rollicking good time ride through the world of surf rock. Most tracks on the album clock in at right around three and a half minutes, which makes the album pass by so quickly that there will be an immediate need to hit the play button again. None of the tracks are sleepers (Take that, other surf bands!) and every track has it's own unique character, which makes this one of the finest surf albums of all time. Standouts include the brilliant tremolo swoops on "Incognito" and the stuttering machine gun guitars of "Super X-9". The jazzy cymbal wash of "The Trouble With Those Mothra Girls" makes perfect counterpoint to the deliberate bass walks and chiming guitars. The Van Halen-esque rhythm guitars on the intro to "Sharkakhan" give way to a fast paced racing song that would fit right at home in any good spy movie, especially during a chase scene.
No sleeper tracks. Distinctly different feels melodies in each song. Amazing guitar, bass and drum tones. Musicianship of the highest caliber. Those are the things you will find on this release, Daikaiju. And really, beyond that, the only thing you need to know about Daikaiju is that one of the guys goes by the moniker Secret Asian Man. And who can't stand behind that?
-L. Keane
Much more than a surf band.......2005-03-09
It would be easy to label Daikaiju a surf/spy rock band.
Easy, but not really fair, and certainly not accurate.
Daikaiju blends the instrumental surf rock genre with all sorts of other influences. Super-heavy riffs worthy of any hard rock outfit ("Daikaiju Die!"), beautifully intricate melodies (see "Farewell to Monster Island", and hints of reggae, jazz, and even some jamband-esque elements makes for an album that is very distinctive and interesting, never getting repetitive or tiresome at all.
I reccommend this record not only to surf fans, but to lovers of great, unique, instrumental music in general. Buy this record now and experience "the soundtrack to the greatest monster movie never made"
Oh, and for god's sake...seek out their first CD "The Phasing Spider Menace". It's out-of-print, but it's worth any price you might pay just for "Rising Up From the Depths of Time".

Mainly I was interested in Samantha Mathis singing "Maybe, God's a Woman Too." As I looked down the list of songs, none were by Ms. Mathis or River Phoenix. Too bad. Not interested. Perhaps one day, you'll get the original sound track.

My favourite movie of all time.......2006-11-15
I have searched every dvd store in Ireland, England and Scotland for this film. Its my favourite film of all time..
I was gobsmacked when I found it on Amazon..
My only regret is that is was not region Europe..However I have no problem purchasing a region all player to watch it. The main thing is I now have my very own copy to keep and to grow old with.. Thank you Amazon.x
where's "maybe god's a woman too" ???.......2006-08-13
Like many others I was extremely disappointed that the soundtrack of the fabulous movie does not include this song "maybe god's a woman too". Would really like to have this song to my collection but just can't find it. Anyone can help?
SOUNDTRACK NOT AS EXPECTED.......2006-05-17
Although I love the songs on the soundtrack and the artists they used to sing them, it would have been so much better with the cast singing them like they did in the movie. They didn't include some of the songs the actors sang either. I don't think they really thought it through before they released this album. Especially with it being River Phoenix's last movie it would have been great to have his voice on record. But I give it 4 stars anyway because I do enjoy the songs and artists on the album.
