The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

Simply beautiful.......2007-01-11
Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!
CD has missing track.......2006-12-03
John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.
I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.
Disappointed.......2006-11-10
I absolutely love the music from Out of Africa, but I do not recommend this CD at all. The sound quality is so poor that I could only bear listening to it once.
Worth Buying!.......2006-11-06
Highly recommended for those who love instrumental music. A lot of beautiful flute, strings and some piano and harp. Very contemplative and hauntingly beautiful music.
Great Album.......2006-11-04
For me, one of the best music of last decade. Romantic, full of sense. Please give a listen at least

If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success: Part 2. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer's and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. Though not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialog excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance-club mix of "Now We Are Free." With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialog snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Gladiator die-hards. Also of note: guitarist Heitor Pereira's flamenco-flavored flourishes are better showcased throughout; and "The Gladiator Waltz" serves up one of Zimmer's original synth demos (with a dash of Russell Crowe dialog up front)--a dramatic amp-up of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" that's a prime example of the composer's state-of-the-art digital orchestral conjuring. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Essential.......2006-12-30
One of those pivotal soundtracks. Unfortunately, there is dialogue over a few of the tracks, but it is well worth sitting or fast-forwarding through. There is a duduk (the sound used for that thing Mr. Tumnus plays in 'Narnia'), and I have fallen in love with it. There is the use of a female voice (Lisa Gerrard) wailing in another language, which had become something of a trend ('Troy', 'Munich', 'Narnia' again, and many others). "Now We Are Free" is the kind of song that first intrigues you, then entraps you, and then takes you on an emotional ride. The soundtrack is intensely bittersweet, exciting ("The Gladiator Waltz"--yes, you're supposed to giggle--Hans did!), and just very consumable. If you were impressed by movie--and I haven't run into anybody yet who wasn't--then consider this soundtrack an equivalent of that experience, but audio.
HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST PRESENT DAY COMPOSER!!!.......2005-10-23
I HAVE TO SAY HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST OF HIS ERA. I HAVE PURCHASED ALMOST ALL OF HIS MAJOR SCORES FROM RAIN MAN, CRIMSON TIDE, GLADIATOR, AND EVEN THE LATEST BATMAN AND I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF MORE THAT COULD BE LISTED. I FIRST WAS WEIRY ABOUT BUYING THE SECOND SCORE TO GLADIATOR THINKING IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE. IT IS AWESOME AND JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER, IF YOU ARE A TRUE ZIMMER FAN YOU HAVE TO ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. I HOPE HE KEEPS MAKING MUSIC FOR YEARS TO COME.
Excellent Extention!.......2005-10-22
Gladiator may be the best middle eastern score ever written. The Duduk was incredible!
The first CD was amazing as well, however, I believe this disc to have a few advantages.
First of all, "The Gladiator Waltz." This song TOTALLY improves upon "The Battle" from disc 1. The original stopped way before the new track. The synth sounds are very good, and don't take away from the beauty at all!
Another highlight is "Homecoming" this is a sad, angry song that will have your blood pumping. If you've seen the movie, you remember the scene where Maximus escapes execution, and rides home like a mad man, only to find his wife and son Crucified. A truly angry and intense song.
"Secrets" is a sneaky evil track, portraying the violent insanity of Commodus.
I have mentioned the highlights, but all the rest are great too! A must have CD, even if you own the first!
beautiful
music.......2005-07-28
This is just what the title says: more great(beautiful)
music from the motion picture, including some "spiced-up" remixes. This album also features sound clips from the movie. Listening to it will make you think you're in Rome again.
Disappointing companion to the Oscar nominated score........2005-05-28
The original score for Gladiator was a grand triumph for composer Hans Zimmer. Unfortunatly, this cd follows a trend during the latter half of the 1990's. When you have a successful score cd, follow it up with a cd full of dialogue, demo tracks and occassional new music. That is what this cd is full off. I expected more of the great music from the movie, instead I was disappointed bitterly.

When you think of Henry Mancini, you inevitably think of either "Peter Gunn" or "Moon River." (Well, maybe "The Pink Panther"--but that became a cartoon show, so it doesn't count!) Breakfast at Tiffany's gave the world the latter tune, and that beautiful melody recurs throughout this soundtrack LP, which remained No. 1 on the Billboard pop charts for 12 weeks in 1961. (Music for Peter Gunn in 1959 was Mancini's only other No. 1 album.) The soundtrack doesn't include Andy Williams's hit single of "Moon River," but then neither did the film. It does, however, take you through the many moods of the film (and the exploits of Miss Holly Golightly), with an emphasis on Latin influences in the forms of "Latin Golightly" and "Moon River Cha Cha." Nevertheless, one common complaint has been that RCA could've remastered the music and added additional tracks to flesh out the CD. Maybe in the future... --Bill Holdship

Best soundtrack I've heard, especially if you like 1950's swing and jazz.......2007-05-04
Great soundtrack, though very hard to find. Henry Mancini does a great job with the orchestra, I can almost see Mr.Yomioshi peeking out of his door, or Holly singing with her guitar in her windowsill. Perfect for background music when entertaining, and also when you want to relax and enjoy the music of the 1950's.
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO MY "SAKE PARTY" (Please RSVP).......2006-08-27
Back in the mid-1980s, I had an idea for a "theme party" I wanted to throw. Unfortunately, life (lower case L) obstructed my plan and I never got around to it. {*Truth is, he never managed to save up enough money to buy friends to invite.*} But I did record four 90-minute cassette tapes of background music for the party that never was. (Remember, this was before recordable CDs and all the other technocrap.) Oh, the music would have been great: Booker T And The MGs; Three Dog Night; Bobby Darin; Stevie Wonder; Muddy Waters; The Partridge Family; War; and Wild Cherry (guess which Funky song, White Boy!) But each side of every tape ended with MR. YUNIOSHI, the theme song for Mickey Rooney's angry Japanese character in the movie, Breakfast At Tiffany's. MR. YUNIOSHI was to be the cue for me - wherever I was mixing, or whoever I was mixing it up with - to prepare to turn over the tape.
I may throw this party yet...someday. The house is going to be jammed - floor to ceiling - with helium-filled balloons, so as you push your way through them, you'll never know who or what you're about to run into. {*Fun, eh? If you're smart, you'll have a prior engagement.*} Hey, never mind that voice behind the curtain - it IS going to be fun! But there is one thing that every person at this party will have in common: Regardless of who ends up kissing whom, or who ends up punching whom, or regardless of For Whom The Bell Tolls {*Sounds like it's going to be an exhausting evening for Whom! I hope he or she is up to it.*}, each and every person will have knocked back a slug of SAKE as a prerequisite for gaining admittance to this soiree.
SAKE (pronounced "Sock-ee"), in case you don't know, is the traditional fermented Japanese beverage made from rice. It's served hot in small ceramic cups. Being hot, it seems to assimilate in a person's bloodstream fairly quickly and makes one feel real good, real fast. For many, it's an "acquired taste", although I took to it immediately. {*He's an alky; he took to all booze before he took to the bus for elementary school.*} I have two nice sake sets that I purchased ages ago in Chinatown, near downtown Los Angeles, and you'll need to suck a shot of sake before you're permitted to enter my pagoda to hear MR. YUNIOSHI. {*And burst his bubble and pop his balloons!*}
But MR. YUNIOSHI is far from being the only track I like from Henry Mancini's BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S soundtrack. I've seen the movie a couple of times and I'm just not one of its fans. But the music, now that's another thing! BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (the film) won none of the 1961 Academy Awards, but the Oscars for "Best Music Score" and "Best Song" (Moon River) went to Mr. Mancini. What does that tell you? {*Think, McFly! Think!*} This entire album is delicious; it's one of my 25 most frequently played compact discs!
It starts with the award-winning bittersweet song, MOON RIVER, written by Mancini and the equally legendary Johnny Mercer. I love the song even if my favorite version was recorded later by Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. This is the only "song", literally speaking, as it contains lyrics sung by Mancini's Chorus. All other tracks are instrumentals unless you're counting the Chorus singing "Oohs" and "Ahhs" on a couple of the other cuts.
Some of the instrumental pieces have that unmistakable "Mancini" stamp: Distinctively pronounced beats (a la "The Pink Panther"). Others are the antithesis of that style, with a tremendously yearning emotional content conveyed through the subtle interplay of his impeccable Orchestra and the smooth harmonic layering of his Chorus of male and female voices doing little more than humming the melodies.
And yet again, on some pieces, Mancini's charts propel his dynamic, top-notch Orchestra into bright, soaring flights that seem almost on the verge of running off the pages and into improvisational exuberance. {*Don'tcha just love how he nearly sounds like he knows what he's talking about?*} I mean, listen to that Orchestra crank it up on THE BIG BLOW OUT, or SOMETHING FOR CAT, or LOOSE CABOOSE - Mancini directed highly accomplished musicians as befitting a man of his genius. And I never use the word "genius" lightly, but this man was indeed just that! How he was able to translate the action of a scene into corresponding "music pictures" in pieces like THE BIG HEIST and the playful striptease-cum-cartoon, HUB CAPS AND TAIL LIGHTS! {*Some would say, if you've got `em, flaunt `em.*}
But nothing moves me more than SALLY'S TOMATO, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, and HOLLY - three instrumentals that float like some tear-drenched, melancholic sunbeam. They were recorded at the dawn of the 1960s, just before all hell broke loose in this country and we found ourselves embroiled in a cultural revolution that pierced an ineffable something deep within us and from which we'll never recover. There's a desperate "looking back at innocence" captured in these three pieces that crushes my heart and forces my eyelids closed. It's a memory of joy that's gone and not returning. It's gently swaying grass growing around the headstone of a deceased lover. {*Aw, cap it, will ya? Yer bumming everyone out.*}
Alright then. Let me just say that this soundtrack is Five Star from top to bottom, and in short {*It's too late for THAT!*}, there are two things that I really recommend you do: You should acquire a copy of Henry Mancini's musical masterpiece right here and now, and later you should come to my SAKE PARTY. {*If you pass out, and you're still there in the morning, he's gonna treat you to BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S!*}
Capote.......2006-05-23
If you've seen the recent academy-award-winning performance depicting Truman Caopte, you can appreciate even more the role Hepburn plays in this film.
And, perhaps as much or more, the crucial function Henry Mancini had to fulfill in creating this memorable music. The exact music in the movie itself is a little different than what you'll find in this album, but that is actually a good thing.
This album combines aspiration, ambition, sophistication and pretense into a really irresistable brew. Hepburn's performance made us love her.
But Mancini won an Oscar, too. Let's reflect on exactly how and why that happened...
It Still Resonates in Our Hearts.......2006-03-03
Henry Mancini's soundtrack is very timely for the period in which it was released. It remains vibrant, elegant and sentimentally moving and captures the essence of this film so satisfyingly. Adding to the overall effect is the melancholy and so endearingly memorable and touching MOON RIVER. This soundtrack truly captures the feel of this film and those great times that seem gone forever but still resonate in our hearts.
Oh it's good..........2005-11-23
When listening to the first track simply entitled "Moon River" you would think that you're in a black Givency evening dress with a string of pearls standing outside Tiffany's eating a dansih and drinking coffee.
"Moon River Cha Cha" describes a typical cocktail party and it's good!
This soundtrack does NOT dissapoint and in my opinion is timeless, I mean it *is* Henry Mancini...

A Music Score Benchmark.......2006-07-15
This soundtrack is one of my continuing favorites. I tell you that for film scores, this one sets the bar pretty high. Since this soundtrack was released, I have personally used this one as the benchmark test for any new stereo equipment I have purchased. The spectrum of sound included, in the second track in particular, will test the speakers of a new sound system better than many test disks that I've seen. The sound is able to pull you into your mental review of the film more effectively than most other soundtracks out there, with certain exceptions of course. This soundtrack is overall that which many scores fail to be, a musical painting of the film, not just filler music. This is a memorable disk for a memorable film.
Good sound, but themes are redundant.......2005-08-06
I enjoy this CD very much. The music has a sweeping charm and romantisicm to it. My only problem is that this score pretty much consists of two themes, the Rocketeer Theme and Jenny's theme, played over and over again. There's nothing wrong with the two themes, on the contrary they are both very enjoyable, but the CD simply needs more variety.
On a different note, the Cole Porter songs are wonderful for anyone who enjoys his music, and the singer has a sultry voice that's perfect for the selection.
Heroic images.......2004-10-16
Superman and Batman two heroes who get all the movies, toys, cartoons, etc... however with the Rocketeer we can start a new trend. Th Music by Horner fits right in with Superman by Mr. Williams and surpasses Mr. Elfman's work in Batman. on my Mix for heroes I included the Rocketeer as a tune for the golden Age Green lantern The Current GL has the Last Starfighter The Rocketeer is a thrilling adventure of the likes we just dont see any more The Music by Mr. Horner frames it and matches the spirit of it all so perfectly. you could have the worst day of your life and yet feel like a million bucks after listening to this sweeping score!
Excellent Score! One of Horner's best........2004-10-09
Since he wrote the score for Braveheart and won an Oscar for Titanic, James Horner has been among the most disappointing of film composers. His works have been highly derivative and this often makes the listener deride the composer for his lack of so-called talent. The Rocketeer proves te depth of Mr. Horner's talent. It's sweeping melodic main theme is a perfect counterpoint to the theme of flight running throughout the movie. His love theme is a classic old fashioned melody that perfectly fits with the movie and his use of the piano to subtly bring out the movie is totally fantastic. The Rocketeer is among the best of James Horner's works and is one of his most enjoyable scores. His work is truly a masterpiece. While the movie's special effects may seem dated, Horner's score is immortal and shows just how beautiful his music is when he writes original music.
The Rocketeer: Another great James Horner score.......2003-08-02
After "Krull" this is my favourite James Horner score. The main theme is brilliant and there is a good balance between action music and slow music. Some tracks contain the "suspense/bass motif" from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan". Horner uses this motif often in his work, I like that.
My favourite track is "The Flying Circus", a fantastic action cue. (The bass-trombone is great!!)
The track "Jenny" is very beautiful, and one of Horner's best love-themes ever.
There are also two jazzy songs on the album. I think they are very good.
If you are a fan of James Horner, or you like Star Trek II, you might enjoy this cd very much.

The movie it ain't!.......2007-06-21
I purchased this SACD after reading the glowing reviews and was disappointed when I listened to the recording. Despite being the soundtrack to a VERY LONG film, there was very little contrast in the 18 offerings on the disc. Unlike numerous classical SACDs that have greatly moved me, "Dances With Wolves" merely lulled me to sleep.
Dances With Wolves.......2006-03-03
this wonderfull score is the bast score of all time. You must have this score in your movie music collection.
Dances With Wolves Soundtrack.......2005-09-23
This is beautiful haunting music. One of the best all-time movie scores.
not all SACD are surround.......2005-05-05
I just wanted to let everyone know who read that review that he doesnt know what he is talking about. Yes this is a STEREO only SACD. SACD was first made only in stereo. There was no surround or hybrid SACD. And if you listen to SACD dont buy the regular CD this will blow it away.Im not trying to be mean just stating the facts. Ive been listining to SACD since 1999 when sony released this format and when I heard Billy Joel I was hooked. Have fun and buy them all because Sony is thinking of not doing SACD anymore and that would be awful.
SACD, but NO surround sound.......2005-02-13
Very nice music - nothing wrong with that.
But.... this is a stereo CD. It has SACD written all over it and my new Denon DVD-3910 DVD player does recognise this as an SACD, but it only has 2 channels, instead of 5.1. I do own several other SACD's and these DO play 5.1 channel. Very strange....
So perhaps it's smarter to order the Stereo CD, the one with the special bonus tracks (Dances with Wolves (Special Extended Edition).

The wrong list for great music from a bad film.......2003-04-30
I rented the DVD of the film "At First Sight" a few years ago. Great idea, but the movie had a slow plot & shallow characters. The music is another issue, Mark Islam writes fantastic music, this is one of his highlights. The mood is rather equal throughout; sad but hopeful. I read in other review that Diane Krall sang in the movie, but the singer Gigi Worth in the CD does a great job, rather lower in pitch, an alto. The main theme repeats like in classical music, meaning that it changes a little each time. The theme is not boring as in some movie soundtracks where the same theme never develops. The last section has some jazz standards from Louis Armstrong, George Shearing, & Ella Fitzgerald. These are recorded very well & add a classic touch to the ending. This is one of those CD's that you can play over & over again. Check out Mark Islam other movie soundtracks.
Beautiful Music.............2002-10-21
Poignant and reminscent of the movie I love this Soundtrack I don't know why Amazon has the wrong listings for the CD but here is the correct line-up:
1. At First Sight
2. A Simple Touch
3. This Is What Beautiful Looks Like
4. A Seeing Celebration
5. To Share a Feeling
6. A Seeing Journey
7. You Don't See Me
8. This Look I Love
9. Our Eyes Aren't What Makes Us See
10.Love is Where You Are - Diana Krall
11.A Kiss to Build A Dream On - Louis Armstrong
12.It Never Entered My Mind - George Shearing
13.Easy Come, Easy Go - Diana Krall
14.They Can't Take That Away From Me - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
15.Love is Where You Are - Diana Krall (longer version with Instrumental Suite at the Beginning)
Highly Recommend this CD I L0VE Diana Krall's voice and the songs with Louis Armstrong just added to my enjoyment. The first 9 songs on the CD are Instrumental Suites but they are different each in their own way.

I am disappointed.......2002-08-14
I am disappointed. I see the film because in there Diana Krall sings the theme. After I bought the record for the same reason and in it there is another singer who sings the theme. Anyway, the record is not bad, but ...
"theme is particularly beautiful and deeply romantic".......2000-05-30
In the liner notes, Mark Isham states - "I wrote themes, not for individual characters, but for points in the story. There was a theme for their love scenes - a breakup theme - a theme that I developed to underscore the two people discussing things that were important to them...I composed music to reflect interior states, the specific cognitions which Virgil experienced".
Opening theme is particularly beautiful, deeply romantic. The music speaks mostly with piano and strings, with underscore - "OUR EYES AREN'T WHAT MAKE US SEE", reaching the high excitement of - "A SEEING JOURNEY", with the sadness and brooding ' "YOU DON'T SEE ME".
The closing - "LOVE IS WHERE YOU ARE" sung by Diana Krall in the film and Gigi Worth on the album is so tender and a responsive melody. The song tugs at your heart-strings giving you that ache just before it is broken.

Loved the theme song and classical (original score)!.......1999-03-07
My all time CD will be Titanic and has been for the longest time. Seeing this movie, the music did have an impact on it. I loved the theme song, it had some touching parts to it and made me relive the ending - awesome! It was a good CD but I wouldn't listen to it all the time.

David Lynch makes a mix tape for the adventurous........2005-03-15
Not one of my favorite Lynch films... but one of my all-time favorite soundtrack compilations. The reason? Sheer ballsy ecelecticism. Who else would follow up Strauss with speed metal? Or big band music with rockabilly? Yet it somehow all makes sense, creating an almost indescribable atmosphere that's at once totally intense and totally cool. In a perfect world, radio would always sound like this: An uber-hip DJ picking songs not because they *sound* appropriate together... but because they *feel* appropriate together.
Worth mentioning are Chris Isaac's two contributions here, in my opinion among his best-ever songs. There's the hit "Wicked Game," of course, but "Big Blue Spanish Sky" drips mystery and melancholy in a pretty wonderful way. Longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti's requisite instrumental contributions seem to key off Isaac's vibe.
One drawback: you get Nicholas Cage singing not one, but two Elvis tunes. He's not as good as Elvis.
"Im Abendrot".......2004-07-10
is not by Wagner - but the last of the 'four last songs' by richard strauss.
lynch is a tripper.......2004-06-13
unlike most the other collaborations between lynch and angelo badalamenti this soundtrack is very diverse inthat it features everything from 50's rock to speed metal and of coarse those lavish instrumentals.for some reason I don't like w@h as much as the other lynch soundtracks, but it's still better than 90% of the majority of film music out there today(hence the 4 stars).with songs like chris isaak's"wicked game"(my favorite part in the film),the instrumental of "cool cat walk"(lated rerecorded w/julee cruise on vocals), the original version of "up in flames"with raspy vocals(another song later redone by julee on her 2nd cd),and the cool-but-laughable "slaughterhouse"by powermad(think slayer meets motley crue sorta)THIS ALBUM IS DEFINATLY WORTH YOUR $10!(or $2.50 if you can find one used like I did!)
It's rockin' good news!.......2003-02-26
A knowledge of David Lynch films might help to understand the selection, but it isn't neccessary to love every song. Though "Wild At Heart" offers metal, oldies, and rockabilly, most of it is cool and collected. Two tracks of the "kings", and two from Chris Isaak are great, but it's the odd-balls and instrumentals that make this essential. "Perdita" is one of the coolest things I've ever heard in my life. However, the BEST reason to own this soundtrack, is to hear Nicolas Cage sing the two Elvis songs. Now that's cool. I may as well also say this is likely my favorite movie of all time. Enjoy.
one of the best soundtracks to one of the best films.......2000-06-30
this cd has some eclectic tunes but it works because they are all alive with the rhythm of life. this cd is thrilling to me, from the painfully heavenly im abendrot to the frightening slaughterhouse, to the very square and unhip smoke rings. it all works though, with a recurring musical motif being the dark and lonely reverb guitar and 50's style songs. i get tingles just thinking about it.

"Herrmann's scores are extraordinarily fascinating".......2000-10-21
Varese Sarabande presents a series of Bernard Herrmann's years at Fox with this first volume, featuring "Tender Is the Night", "Man In The Gray Flannel Suit" and "A Hatful Of Rain". Of the forty-nine original feature film scores, eighteen, more than one-third of the total were written for films made at 20th Century-Fox.
Now let's look at what we have on this first volume..."TENDER IS THE NIGHT", rich and expressive score with twenty tracks of "Pure Herrmann" compositions, featuring muted, unresolved pattern in the violins, first in the lowest register, repeating in an octave higher, then an octave even higher, strings build to a screeching crescendo, creating a very effective scene, which Herrmann nailed perfectly for the story-line.
Next we have "MAN IN THE GRAY FLANNEL SUIT, themes of personal integrity, the pressures of conformity, dodging the truth and playing the corporate game, all of this is captured by Herrmann's brilliant score.
Final score - "A HATFUL OF RAIN" (1957), deals with heroin, and Herrmann utilizes the orchestras string section to its fullest, composing some fierce and furious sequences, putting true-to-life addiction smack-dab in the publics eye, which until now was unspeakable...Herrmann constructs an edifice of mounting tension unreleting ostinato for winds, building and building to an ultimate climax, a theme that haunts the entire score, our composer at his best.
Herrmann was at his peak when working at Fox, an era long gone but not forgotten, as we now have Herrmann's classic scores on CD, thanks to Varese Sarabande!

Great and rare Herrmann scores.......2000-06-29
I remember how in the mid eighties - when I started collecting soundtracks by the great Bernard Herrmann - I would never have dreamed that someday such rare items in the composer's output would someday be preserved on disc. Bu now, thanks to the enterprising record producer Nick Redman, Bernard Herrmann afficionados are treated to the first volume of 20th Century Fox's Herrmann anthology. Volume 1 and 2 focus on Herrmann's richest period, namely the late fifties and early sixties. "Tender is the Night" is the main course on this album. This is a moody, melancholic effort. Sad elegies. Sometimes quite claustrophobic. Remembrances of a place and people long gone. Your typical Bernard Herrmann score. Actually, this is the kind of musical atmosphere I was hearing in my mind while reading F.Scott Fitzgerald's novel on which this movie is based. There are shades of Vertigo's quiter moments interspersed throughout. The "main title" was not written by Herrmann. Unfortunately, Fox music executive Lionel Newman asked Gus Khan and Sammy Fain to come up with a potential hit song. The result is schmaltzy and mundane: the movie bombed. Fortunately, it can be easily skipped in favor of Herrmann's much more ambitious musical scenario. "The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit" is also very good, featuring a gorgeous soaring main theme and some atmospheric passages. Volume 1 concludes with "A Hatful of Rain". It is comparatively quite stark and brooding. Here is the flip side of "Benny" Herrmann: relentless, obsessive scoring. Although these movies are now quite old, the sound is in very crisp stereo with good channel separation. Some hissy parts. But the sound si great. 3 nice scores, well preserved. Informative booklet notes. Volume 2 ("Garden of Evil") and 3 ("Anna and the King of Siam") are also highly recommended. An important addition to Bernard Herrmann's growing discography.
A must for classic soundtrack and Herrmann lovers.......1999-09-13
Another winner from Fox-Varese. These selections were taken from the orginal soundtrack recording sessions conducted by Herrmann himself. They sound wonderful and should be supported by classic soundtrack lovers.

The great Herrmann experiment!.......2003-04-12
While channel-surfing the other evening, I came upon the start of a movie on the Western Channel. The opening chords of the film's theme momentarily caught my attention; they sounded like the great Herrmann may have composed them. To my satisfaction, as the credits rolled, I saw the name of my favorite movie composer. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to watch the movie in question: "Garden of Evil". But, I knew that the first opportunity that I had, I would be purchasing the soundtrack.
My copy arrived yesterday and I it hasn't left my sound system.
What a wonderful find is this CD!
"Garden of Evil" comes across as an experiment in themes, tonal structure, and orchestral arrangement that Herrmann would explore in depth in future compositions. One can hear the beginnings of his music for "Psycho", "Jason and the Argonauts", "Vertigo", "Mysterious Island", "North by Northwest", and many of his other more notable scores. Only two tracks come close to being "traditional" for a western, and even they bear the undeniable Herrmann stamp of orchestral construction. The cut "The Wild Party" shows Herrmann as his most "schizophrenic".
Astute listeners can recognize cues that would later be used in various Twentieth Century Fox/Irwin Allen productions ("Lost in Space," "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "The Time Tunnel"). Because Fox obviously owned the rights to the music, it could make use of Herrmann's work as background for its programming. The shows were only enhanced with the sound from a true master of film scoring.
The selections from "Prince of Players" and "King of the Khyber Rifles" are pure Herrmann and that is enough to be said.
Esoteric Original Recording from Bernard Herrmann.......2002-01-16
This is the original recording of Bernard Herrmann's penetrating and esoteric score for the composer's only Western film GARDEN OF EVIL (providing you don't count his score for THE KENTUCKIAN, which has a rich Appalachian flavor and spirit running throughout). Conducted by Herrmann this score is strangely moody and mysterious throughout yet contains outbreaks of sheer energy that are clearly and technically reproduced from this original stereo recording. This is truly a historic recording for any collector of Herrmann's music. Here with GARDEN OF EVIL Herrmann gives us mostly fragments or hints of a melody and continually keeps the flow off balance which is very unsettling. The entire film was unsettling. Director Henry Hathaway took a very minimal plot and twisted a tale of emotion driven by greed and ultimately survival. Every day the sun sets and it takes another soul seeking redemption in the process. Bernard Herrmann's score brilliantly captures this sentiment throughout with his use of rich orchestral color. Selections from PRINCE OF PLAYERS and KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES are also on this CD. GARDEN OF EVIL is a brilliantly conceived composition and is one of Herrmann's most important and perspicacious scores.
"Herrmann's multi-faceted musical career".......2000-10-22
In the early 1950s, we found our composer in a transition period, moving to California at the age of forty to be near and active in film composing. Meeting with Alfred Newman (music director) at 20th Century-Fox, engaged the volatile but brilliant Herrmann to score some of the studio's most romantic and dramatic films...thus our story begins.
Let's look at our first score - "GARDEN OF EVIL" (1954), Henry Hathaway film, starring Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward and Richard Widmark all looking for a gold mine. Herrmann opens with a powerful statement for brass, an ominous orchestral theme, suggesting barren forbidding landscape, and our composer hits the mark...dead on! Traditional western themes, spanish rhythms, masked with typical Herrmann dark hues, even Rita Moreno sings one of Herrmann's compositions...this twenty-four track score is worth the price of admission.
Next we have "PRINCE OF PLAYERS" (1955), chronicled the lives, fortunes and misfortunes of one of America's great theatrical families the Booths, starring Richard Burton, Raymond Massey and John Derek, as the family of John Wilkes Booth, who attained infamy as Abraham Lincoln's assassin. Herrmann loved this film and scored a memorable overture that combines theatrical fanfares with a stately march, later combined with 19th century incidental theater music, which emotionally is low-key drama, moving to high-Shakespearean moments, all the while blending sweet and melancholy themes, works perfectly as we know only too well, is "Pure Herrmann" at his finest hour.
Final score - "KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES" (1953), was the studios fourth CinemaScope film, the theme is India under British colonial rule (la Kipling) in 1857, starring Tyrone Power, Michael Rennie and the beautiful Terry Moore (Howard Hughes widow), setting was picturesque and Herrmann was attracted to the story-line. Opening main theme is exciting, with pounding drumbeats, screaming brass and shrill flutes indicating hard riding soldiers against the faux-indian panorama of mountains and desert (actually, was Long Pine, California), but you get the general idea. Our composer gently hints at indian themes, cleverly deploying woodwinds, harp and percussion...but the stand out is "The Storm" that the indian natives call (Hammer of God), is appropriately awesome, sweeping strings, pounding percussion with interwoven flute harmonies, brilliantly Herrmann.
Herrmann was kept busy from mid 1951 to late 1954, writing some of his best music for Fox productions..."movie-music collectors" this is a dream come true...more Bernard Herrmann, sit back and enjoy...once again thanks Varese Sarabande for this second volume!

Garden of Evil: the genius of Bernard Herrmann.......2000-08-11
For years I have been anticipating the issue of Bernard Herrmann's score for Garden of Evil. Finally and fortunately that anticipation has come to fruition. This is not a re-recording. It is an original recording from the film's actual scoring sessions and is in stereo. I believe all 20th Century Fox films in cinemascope were made in stereo, thus that would include the recording of their scores as well. Almost all the entire score is present on this disc. Relative to when the recording was made I would say it sounds very good. The score itself is very low-key Herrmann and that is what makes its so interesting. The film for which the score was written is very underrated. Garden of Evil is a western rich with characterization that seems stereotypical on the surface, but on analysis, runs much deeper. Susan Hayward (an enigmatic heroine) hires a group of stranded travelers in a Mexican waterfront town to follow her to a remote mine where her husband is trapped. The adventurous group is comprised of Gary Cooper (the upright, moralistic hero), Richard Widmark (a cynical witticism spouting gambler), Victor Manuel Mendoza (the good-natured Mexican guide) and Cameron Mitchell (the back-shooting kid gunslinger). They must traverse perilous and dangerous Indian territory to get to the mine, but their motives are unclear. Is it the trapped man, the lure of gold or the subdued sexual attraction that Hayward exudes that drives them? The narrative is a study of personalities in conflict, their motivations, loyalties, cowardice and heroism. Richard Widmark's character comes off as the most interesting. He lingers in the viewer's mind long after the film is over and the question is raised - which is the more honorable: the moralistic hero or the dubiously elegant yet noble rogue? Henry Hathaway is a director known for atmosphere, character and authentic locations. He combines mood and action. This film has all those elements. It is beautifully photographed, yet the picturesque landscapes are juxtaposed with disturbingly photographed death scenes, menacing ever-lurking Indians (always photographed from a distance) and even mysterious looking set designs. The church bell tower sprouting up from the dried lava is all that remains of the town outside the mine and is symbolically ominous in appearance. Frank Fenton's screenplay is filled with vague dialog and only adds to the total feeling of uneasiness that permeates this film. Bernard Herrmann's score accentuates the moodiness of this haunting adventure tale, itself also vague and non-specific. It is very untypical of the Hollywood western. This is by no means a minor score by Herrmann. He achieved a recurrent sense of ominous fate throughout this entire film without the score ever entering into the psychological realm. I rank this as one of his great scores.
This CD also contains selections from Herrmann's scores for King Of The Khyber Rifles and Prince Of Players. I have not seen either of these films for many years. I did enjoy the selections from Prince Of Players very much. They fit very much into Herrmann's Americana repartee. These are welcome additions for Bernard Herrmann enthusiasts. If you enjoy Herrmann's music you usually seek out every recording you can find. I highly recommend this CD.
