Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Ensemble sound was more important than virtuosic, emotive soloing in the West Coast style known as "cool" jazz. Henry Mancini took a number of his cues from that mellow '50s sound when he scored the television crime-drama series, Peter Gunn. This soundtrack CD is full of memorable themes, lush textures, and succinct solos played by big band veterans. Vibraphonist Victor Feldman is heavily featured and his instrument's soft, ringing tone plays a key role here. Occasionally Mancini slips into turning out indistinctive, generic pieces, and soundtrack-composer-to-be John Williams's piano playing can be plinky and stiff. But other than that, this is top-notch TV soundtrack fare, highlighted by the irresistible, proto-surf-rock theme song. Instead of just filling up digital space, the bonus tracks really are a valuable addition. A growling trombone solo on "Walkin' Bass" and Shelly Manne's swinging drum work are just a couple of the reasons why. --Fred Cisterna

The Music from Peter Gunn.......2007-05-17
I didn't think I could find the complete copulation of music. Great Mancini and wonderfully reproduced.
Mancini Music is the best music ever on TV.......2007-03-11
This album is a must if you ever watched Peter Gunn on TV way back when. Each one of these songs are great. Interesting to note that John Williams was the pianist on most of these songs. I always thought it was Mancini hemself. Great album. Get it before it's not made anymore. You cannot have my copy.
The First, The Most.......2006-05-23
This was Henry Mancini's first hit album. Hey, when this was released, the notion of "record album" was still fairly new itself, and yet listen to how well this material stands up today.
Henry Mancini had been a big-bad conductor before this album arrived. He'd issued some "gag" disks and gimick recordings, and this was more than a little bit different for him.
I can remember being 8 years old, listening to this stuff emanating from my big sister's room. It was just so, adult. So sophisticated and cool.
It comes from the 50s-era jazz combos, and yet it is arranged for a big band. Vibes, string bass, muted drums, and then a whole bunch of really polished players. This precise combination was Mancini's own at the time. The sounds were so different and so ear-catching. Yet, Mancini's purpose was limited to bringing a backdrop to a TV detective show.
Does anybody remember the detective TV series starring Craig somebodyorother? No, not really. It's not too high on the nostalgia radar for some reason. But this music, which really launched Mancini's career, was impossible to forget.
Listen carefully..........2005-09-30
Okay, so everyone already knows that "Peter Gunn" is one of the great movie (TV) themes of all time, the essence of bad-ass before the term bad-ass was fit to print.
But next time you hear a crappy recording from the 60's or early 70's on CD, and someone tries to tell you they just didn't have the recording technology in those days, give a listen to what Henry Mancini did in a soundstage almost 50 years ago.
There have been a number of great covers, including the Blues Brothers, but nobody actually improves on Mancini's classic.
The Essence of Cool.......2005-08-23
This groundbreaking soundtrack to a show that defined what "cool" was changed the face of television forever. There have been some great TV themes over the past few decades, but this evocative Mancini score set the bar before the bar even existed.
Some excellent liner notes relate the story all Peter Gunn and Mancini fans know well. Henry Mancini had been kicking around Universal for six years. Most of his years there were a study in obscurity, the one exception being his scoring of "Touch of Evil" for Orson Welles. So the studio gave him his two week walking papers. Mancini, being Mancini, decided on one of his last days there to get a free haircut at the studio barber shop. He and the guy next to him got to chatting and hit it off. They had a lot in common. So that newly promoted director, Blake Edwards, says to Mancini, "Hey, how would you like to do this television show for me? It's called "Peter Gunn."
What followed was decades of film magic, and a collaboration that was the stuff dreams, and great films, were made of. Mancini's West Coast Jazz score for Peter Gunn was his defining moment. It is a masterpiece of mood and atmosphere and its orchestral jazz score would have an impact for decades to come. When listening to this, you feel like Peter Gunn. From the famous opening salvo of music, Peter Gunn, both the show and Mancini's score, were, and still are, the essence of cool.
You get sixteen wonderful tracks on this double Grammy winner as you cruise along with the hip detective, the sounds of the most innovative score ever written for television in the background.
Sometimes we're walking in a room and smell the cordite still fresh and lingering, and we better be careful (Fallout).
Other times we're just hanging out with an old pal, trying to figure a way out of this jam (Session at Pete's Pad).
Sometimes we're headed to our favorite jazz club, "Mother's," for a night out with our girlfriend Edie (The Brothers Go to Mother's).
There are also those times, late at night, when things are all wrapped up, and Mother herself hands us the keys so we and Edie can make a little time for romance (Dreamsville).
Mancini would make a career out of ambiance, and Peter Gunn was the impetus for all that was to come. This is an absolute must have for any serious collector. The best thing about picking this one up, aside from the great music, is that somehow, just by owning it, we are just a little bit cooler.

first rate........highly recommend.......2006-01-15
Combo of two albums released in '59/60 from the TV show. Had both in LP version back then. Finally picked up this CD replacement. Essence of cool, at least early 60's style. Tuneful and inventive. Mancini knocked them dead and enhanced his already impressive reputation with these compositions. Based on reviews written this is the disc to buy as other single album remasters were reportedly not done well. Don't have the others but know this one sounds great.
Great add to your collection.
Fun Music, Great Sound.......2005-07-23
The sound on this disc is excellent, the brass jumps out at the listener; the dynamic range is full such that when the big band kicks in it really leaps out of the speakers. I highly recommend this disc, and would tell buyers to beware of the Buddha disc of 16 tracks which has a poor re-mastering and sounds muddy and has none of the brightness and life of this RCA disc. The Peter Gunn music is jazz with pop touches or vice versa, but it is a lot of fun to listen to, even for more hardcore jazz fans.
A Rare Collection of "Cool".......2005-01-15
Recorded in the late '50's, The Music from Peter Gunn was one of the first stereo recordings ever made. Unlike today's multitracking techniques, stereo was created by ambiant mics strategically placed to capture live preformances. What we have here is a time capsule of the most exciting and vibrant preformances of some of the "coolest" big band jazz that was ever made. The genius of Mr. Mancini is displayed in the smooth tunes he wrote that capture the feel of the era so well and are preformed flawlessly by a amazing group of musicians. Virtually every member of his group of musicians gets an opportunity to display their prowess as jazz soloists, weaving an intricate tapestry of sounds that embrace each tune. Mancini's use of French horns provides special texture for his wall of sound and his creative use of trombones as solo instruments gives many of the tunes their characteristic and catchy flavor.
Make no mistake, this collection is for the fans of big band jazz. You can almost picture the musicians with their "shades" on, cigarette precariously hanging out of the corner of their mouths as they play the walking bass lines in smoky clubs while everyone snapped their fingers to the beat. If that's not your cup of jo, then you probably won't like this collection. But if you liked that kind of music, this is the best collection of "cool" jazz ever made.

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Mr Lucky.......2007-05-13
Dave Grusins arrangements of Gershwin and his work with Lee Ritenour and Brasil artists is astounding. He makes everything so listenable! So here we have him arranging the great original works of Hank Mancini. The magic of both these great musicians is overwhelming. Henry wrote some great classics. Dave Grusin gives them a freshness that you will want to listen to over and over again.
Wife is happy now........2007-01-09
Wife had heard this CD on FM radio and secretly wrote it's name on slip of paper. I found it and got it for her for Christmas. "When mama is happy, everbody is happy."
Moonlight homage!.......2006-06-08
Dave Grusin made a very heartfelt homage in Henry Mancini `s memory with this striving album that deserves all your special attention.
If I had to find any motive of complaint around this invaluable CD is the few number of songs. Perhaps Moon river, Charade, and Sunflower could be arranged and included because these three themes were emblematic and definitive in the winning career of Mancini
The only hope I have is that Cruisin makes a second album. But this is fantastic entry to enjoy.
"Fresh, Interesting and Successful Music!".......2006-05-21
I remember collecting Mancini on vinyl when I was a kid. The phrase above was on one of the album covers.
I see Henry Mancini, in hindsight, as a classic example of how talent is consumer voraciously by the entertainment business. He enjoyed his success, to be sure, but it sucked everything out of him, too.
This album is distinguished by its final track though. First, I did not know that lyrics existed for "Soldier in the Rain," and wonder who wrote them. Second, to me, Grusin's choice of this track as the last depicted was no accident. Mancini was a devoted father and husband, and he wanted the best for his children, very much including his son. "That your someday child, never knows the rain."
Grusin's tribute to this great musician and composer is well-fitted and much welcomed.

Dave Grusin's greatest influence and inspiration in his musical career was Henry "Hank" Mancini, and he dedicated this album in memory of the legendary composer. When he was younger and trying to decide what road to take, he thought of the music of Henry Mancini and some other composers such as André Previn and Elmer Bernstein.
According to Dave Grusin, Hank Mancini was "as generous with advice and enthusiasm as anyone he had known in this arena, the whimsical good humor you hear in his music was there in real life as well."
Dave Grusin is joined by some of the finest studio musicians in creating one of the best Henry Mancini tributes: John Pattitucci (bass), Harvey Mason (drums), Russell Malone (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Tollak Ollestad (harmonica), Gary Grant (trumpet), Andrew Martin (trombone), Jerry Hey and the Hot Band, Dan Higgins, Tom Scott and Eric Marienthal (sax). Diana Krall did the vocals on "Dreamsville" and "Soldier In The Rain."
This is Henry Mancini music in smooth jazz, so typical of Dave Grusin's innovative and jazz-oriented arrangements and it presented not only his skills but also his dedication to piano playing.
It's an awesome CD to listen to and enjoy the music of Henry Mancini and the artistry of Dave Grusin. You'll be delighted with all the selections especially his terrific interpretations of "Moment To Moment," "Two For The Road," "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Days of Wine and Roses."
Very highly recommended.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Several years ago we bought this great collection for my mother-in-law, who's in her 80s, and while a lot of the music was familiar to me and my husband, she knew every song. Now it's one of our favorites, too. Anyone who loves music will appreciate this. The double-disc set contains many memorable tunes, from Hugo Winterhalter's "Canadian Sunset" to Jimmy Dorsey's "So Rare".

One of my favorites finally on CD.......2004-11-12
Jazz from Peter Gunn is one of my favorite albums of all times. The music is cool and sophisticated -- everything Mancini wanted to be, but never quite managed in his own arrangements.
Wilder's spare clear trumpet rings out on the breezy, easy songs and gives them a great walking feel. When the tone gets down and dirty, Wilder's trumpet tells you just where the music is leading -- very sexy.
If you've never heard of Joe Wilder or never heard any of his music, I think this is a terrific CD to take a risk on.

Customer Reviews:
Full of Jazz Joy and Adventure.......2005-02-05
Having enjoyed Phil Woods' recent CD, "Here's to Quincy" on Jazzed Media, I made haste to buy Phil's earlier release "Phil Woods and Carl Saunders Play Henry Mancini" on the same label.
This is a matter of personal taste, but I think I enjoy this CD even more (and that's not to say anything negative about "Here's to Quincy"). From beginning to end, this CD bubbles over with a sense of playfulness and joyful adventure which is most appealing. The rapport between altoist Woods and trumpeter Saunders is so close you'd swear they'd been playing together for years, though this was their first studio meeting. These guys are the essence of jazz maturity, both in ensemble playing and in making personal solo statements at every tempo. Their ballad solos on this CD are especially deep and moving.
Mancini's compositions have appealed to jazz improvisors for a long time and no one should think that they are too lightweight to carry a 75 minute program. On this CD we are treated to familiar fare such as "The Pink Panther," "Dreamsville", and "Mr. Lucky", plus some lesser-known Mancini tunes.
It is perhaps rather unusual for a quintet session, but here the arrangers for each selection are listed. There are six different arrangers and this, combined with Mancini's strong compositions and the personal interpretations by the band, result in a great deal of musical variety. In the first six tracks, we get a highly original version of "Panther"; the latin groove of "Lightly"; the bluesy "Walkin' Bass"; the lovely ballad, "Soldier in the Rain"; the medium tempo, stop and go "Free and Easy" and the uptempo and hard driving "Fallout."
"Free and Easy" is one of the tracks which includes a nice passage of interplay between Woods and Saunders. Another such track is the closing ballad, "Two For the Road," one of the CD's highlights. "Fallout" has some exciting exchanges between the front-liners. Furthermore, they don't always play the "heads" of the tunes in unison, but in interweaving lines, which again, is somewhat unusual for a quintet album.
The rhythm section consists of pianist Jeff Jenkins, bassist Ken Walker, and drummer Paul Romaine who support and swing this music as well as anyone could. They contribute fine solos, as well.
Hats off to Phil, Carl, and producer Graham Carter for an excellent and well-recorded session which will bring much enjoyment to fans of bop based, swinging jazz. Highly recommended.
