Thunderbirds [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
By bringing his ambitious, action-packed sci-fi visions to life via detailed, miniature props and puppets (a process he dubbed "Supermarionation") UK producer Gerry Anderson carved out one of TV's most unique bodies of work. The genre arguably reached its zenith with the 1965 debut of Thunderbirds, the spectacular saga of the Tracy family their air-sea-land-space spanning organization, International Rescue. This collection marks the debut soundtrack release of music by series composer--and longtime Anderson collaborator--Barry Gray. Culled from a treasure trove of long-neglected original recordings, the music here is book-ended by the show's signature, energetic theme march, and encompasses everything from Gray's trademark, '60s-urgent action cues to cocktail jazz and exotica--though few as kitschy as an undercover Lady Penelope's Dietrich-esque vocal turn on "Dangerous Game." The producers have carefully utilized the nine episodes for which Gray wrote complete scores (the remainder of the show's music was largely edited from those sessions) as their source material here, producing a loving, remarkably pristine-sounding collection supplemented by colorful, well-annotated notes. --Jerry McCulley

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

what's up.......2007-01-05
Use a little caution with this CD. It has difficulty playing in older CD Players. The format is not totally compatible I couldn't play it on my CD Player even after a replacement, but I could play it on my computer. The second CD Thunderbirds 2 worked fine on both. The Music is fine, the mechanics of the CD are iffy.

Etant jeune j'écoutais la TV mais c'est introuvable .
Merci a vous tous !!!!!!!!
Required Purchase for Thunderbirds fans.......2004-04-04
Quality recordings, well organized, this CD is mandatory for any fan of the 'Thunderbirds' series. I would have bought this if only to get the first 15 seconds of track 3 ("Tracy Island and International Rescue"). Also a pleasure to have the full length recording of the piano music played at the end of "Trapped in the Sky". Super!
MUSIC TO [REMEMBER!!!].......2003-07-12
I only heard the first song and the next minute I was 5 years old!!!
I could remember things about my chilhood like the toys I used to play, the clothes and of course all my favorite chapters of THUNDERBIRDS... If you want to make a trip on time, please just lisent this C.D. and you'll remember like me a lot of things of your infancy.
A Labor of Love.......2003-05-09
This CD takes the idea of a soundtrack to a whole new level. It is designed as a true labor of love with wonderful selection and attention to detail. The product succeeds on two levels - it is a triumph of presenting music like this in the best possible format and also reveals just how great something like this can be when people really invest their whole hearts in a project. If you love Thunderbirds you OWE it to YOURSELF to buy this CD. Buy it now!... This CD honors all the people involved with the series and it is a just and fitting tribute to Barry Gray.

Customer Reviews:
OK Fun.......2004-04-03
I loved and still love most of these shows, so to get their themes on CD for under $10.00 seemed like a no-brainer. I must say though that are not by the original artists and listening to them gives me the feeling I'm listining to one of those K-Tel records from the 70's where they advertised all the latest pop hits on a record and when you got it, it was done by some lame band, not the original. While the bands here are pretty close to the original it just doesn't quite sound the same. Still it's a small investment so take a chance.
A Fun Record.......2004-02-20
That's right, it's a fun record, British TV shows in general have good theme songs, case in point "Crossroads", a TV show I would probably never watch, but what a great theme. "High Wire" from the Dangerman/Secret Agent TV show (sounding a lot like David Bowie's "Lady Grinning Soul") sounds just great here, too.
One basic complaint: a lot of cool theme songs are conspicuous by their absence. If you're going to do puppet shows, where's the awesome "Supercar" theme? And you can't have "The Saint" and "The Avengers" without music from "The Prisoner". Oh well, maybe they were setting up a Volume II by holding out on those tracks. This is still a great and FUN record..
Just close your eyes and you're back again.......2001-07-01
I just closed my eyes and there they were again, the grey, green, orange, yellow and metallic spacerockets. The Thunderbirds were back. As if it was the sixties, every theme after that gave me a thrill: The wonderful theme of Aqua Marina sung by Gary Miller, those first big band notes from the Thunderbirds, You could almost see the Jet car from Joe 90 racing through the country. If you want to hear them all again, i think this is the best you can get.

"return to those early days of the Thunderbirds".......2004-08-12
Silva America takes us back to the 1960's with the second volume "Thunderbirds 2", one of the most popular television series ever to hit the small screen. Bringing three-dimensional puppet animation adventures of International Rescue to our living rooms. When you heard that familiar opening theme "MAIN TITLES", stirring march and we're ready for the weekly action. Our composer Barry Gray writes powerful cues that will make any youngster leap for joy. Besides the opening track, a few highlight stands out "SAN MARTINO", beautiful latin arrangement with a solo guitar ~ "DANGEROUS GAME", haunting theme with composer Barry Gray at the piano ~ "SLEEPY TIME", a short lullaby with music box flavor ~ "FLYING HIGH", featuring Gary Miller on vocal for the bonus closing title, although it was never used is still a winner. This album delivers twenty explosive cues from Gerry Anderson's hit show that thrilled us ~ his many, many fans...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14
This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.
Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.
Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.
Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.

From the 60's onward, UK producer Gerry Anderson built a unique sci-fi TV mini-empire based on "Supermarionation," his unique blend of futuristic production design and marionette "actors" that have since inspired successful ad campaigns, a loving spoof from the creators of South Park and this big-screen, CGI 'n' live actor adaptation. Contemporary film score workhorse Hans Zimmer pays loving tribute to original Anderson musical collaborator Barry Gray, anchoring his update with a faithful cover of the late British composer's original series theme, then concocting a whole slate of new cues that build on the original show's brightly energetic, future-industrial soundtrack ethos. Indeed, the electro-orchestral fusion that Zimmer helped pioneer smartly reinforces that sensibility on muscular new cues like "International Rescue," "TB-3 Takeoff" and "F.A.B." Busted's marketing-oriented modern rock work-up of "Thunderbirds Are GO!" maintains the score's energy, even if it has precious little to do with the original's music -- or charm. --Jerry McCulley

My son loved this.......2006-07-31
My son loves this so much! He is a huge Thunderbirds fan, so is my husband. He likes to listen to the music and repeats the movie dialog as he listen. I like it myself because its instrumental.
A great piece of music.......2005-03-01
This music is some of the best I have heard in quite a while. Sure the movie may have flopped, but I still liked it, primarily on the strength of the music Zimmer created for it. Just look at what Zimmer did for Gladiator (a great movie on its own, but Best Picture material with Zimmer's score).
Busted's theme can be hard to understand for those not used to their brand of British singing and I can see why it might take a few close listenings to be able to fully understand them, but it's fun to listen to nonetheless.
This is simply music at its finest: light, hyponotic, and intriguing.
Hans Zimmer is go !.......2004-09-28
I really believe that this soundtrack deserves a better film !
The "up to date" rework on the original t-birds theme & the new themes being introduced for various situation during the movie are really great.
Look out for tracks #2 (Internationnal rescue) & #16 (F.A.B.), as you'll keep listening to those for quite a while, the techno orchestral arrangements are just too cool !
The title performed by "BUSTED" would be as good, if only I could catch the words they're singing ???
An excellent soundtrack; no matter about the movie........2004-08-29
I was brave enough to see Thunderbirds twice, and I honestly enjoyed it. The soundtrack is excellent, too, as it sounds beautiful. My favorite two tracks are the Busted song, and track #5--"You Need to Grow Up." Now, some people criticize the music, saying this isn't Barry Gray's style. So what? No one on this planet could ever match the style of Gray's original series music. Hans Zimmer does a nice job of giving the movie its own style of music, particularly in track #2, when International Rescue gets introduced. In two tracks, the opening theme and #17, there is the sense of the original series' music, which means Zimmer has obviously given some homage to Gray. I definitely recommend this for anyone who loves an orchestra.
Not Bad.......2004-08-01
Although this film seems to be bombing more than Catwoman , the music is not bad.
Hans Zimmer did some good work here and the Busted Theme is kinda catchy. It takes awhile to understand what they are saying though. The music kinda muffles out the vocals.
The soundtrack is worth getting.
Too bad no one will care.
