In the '60s and '70s, British producer Gerry Anderson created a beloved sci-fi cult literally out of plaster, string, and wire. The techno-future--and admittedly kitschy--appeal of Anderson "supermarionation" puppet shows like Supercar, Fireball XL-5, and The Thunderbirds have charmed successive generations so completely that they even inspired an Orbitz.com commercial campaign. This collection chronicles the music of arguably Anderson's most technically advanced and dramatically mature series, composed by longtime Anderson collaborator Barry Gray. With its more realistic tone, Gray leans heavily on brassy, military music and evocative cues that recall some of John Barry's mystery-enhancing work on the Bond series. Fans of Gray's distinctive pop-rock kitsch won't be disappointed by tracks like "White Snow" (in two versions, including a previously unreleased stereo mix), the electro-exotica of "Lunarville" or lounge-y charms of "The Inquisition" and "Until Midnight." The action cue mini-suite "Spectrum Strikes Back" perfectly encapsulates the composer's energetic tack and use of unexpected, neo-Asian moods and modalities, music that often gracefully belies its modestly budgeted TV roots. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

"Gerry Anderson, Barry Gray & Silva ~ Captain Scarlet".......2004-02-11
Whether you're a fan of this excellent action packed sci-fi series "Captain Scarlet"(and The Mysterons), must admit this has all the ingredients to keep you on the edge of your seat ~ the plot involves the Earth defense organization against aliens from Mars, called The Mysterons. Remember this is from Gerry Anderson, who also gave us "Thunderbirds" (1964-1966) ~ Scarlet was one of the first Supermarionation series with some very serious plots to every episode. The puppets were full scale with a truly realistic look in puppet design. Now our Captain Scarlet was an immortal due to a freak accident which gave him an advantage over his foe and enemies ~ but it's the score, the music that gives Captain Scarlet so much life and realism ~ thus enters our composer Barry Gray.
A master of bringing cues to the forefront of a story line, Barry Gray could deliver action sequences with a smidgen of humor and smooth sophisticated jazz within the counter balance of a theme. Soundtrack takes our cast of Captain Scarlet, Captain Blue, Colonel White, Captain Green, Captain Black and Destiny Angel on adventure after adventure. With opening and closing narration sequences complimenting "WINGED ASSASSIN", "AVALANCHE", "WHITE AS SNOW" (one of my favorite cues on this album), "THE TRAP", ATTACK ON CLOUDBASE" and "SPECTRUM STRIKES BACK" (probably the best cue on this score) ~ bonus tracks lend behind the scenes view with "WHITE AS SNOW" (commercial version - stereo), "TITLES MUSIC" (alternative versions). So fasten your seatbelts, sit back and blast off with all the "film-score-buffs" who will experience those years gone by, but never forgotten...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Collection of TV Themes.......2006-03-30
You get some really impressive British and American TV themes here. Who ever thought you would get Ron Grainer's theme for MAN IN A SUITCASE or Edwin Astley's THE BARON on a CD? Astonishingly they are here with such classic TV themes as John Barry's THE PERSUADERS, Dimitri Tiomkin's RAWHIDE, Edwin Astley's THE SAINT and Laurie Johnson's THE AVENGERS. You also get some very good obscurities as Edwin Astley's DEPARTMENT S and Brian Dee's RETURN OF THE SAINT. There are many more.
