Tweens aren't often heralded for their good judgment and excellent taste (Heelys--hello), but if any young starlet can redeem them, it's Hannah Montana. On this, the second soundtrack from the Disney Channel series, Miley Cyrus takes her cues from her TV alter ego, who has an alter ego of her own: Disc 1 features Miley as Hannah, hair-tossing pop princess by weekend, likable schoolgirl by weekday (see "Old Blue Jeans" and "True Friends" to get a sense of each episode's un-cloying sweetness). But disc 2 is the start of something new, as her friends over on the High School Musical set might say: Miley sings strictly as her spunky, truth-telling self. This yields a number of pepped-up pop tracks bound to vibrate through the walls of pink bedrooms everywhere--"See You Again" is a boy-centric song instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in seventh grade and suffered a bout of bashfulness, "East Northumberland High" puts a punk spin on an I'm-just-not-into-you tale, and "Clear" bounces on a reggae beat while canceling any doubt about our heroine's ability to stand up for herself. Like Hannah before her, Miley makes the best of both worlds--this well-worth-it set, by turns rockin' and reflective, is a masterful example. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:
A Very Good Second Album .......2007-07-10
Miley/Hannah produce some catchy songs on this great follow-up to the first album. In many ways this two-disc set is better than the first Hannah Montana album (there is no filler from other groups or singers) and there are many age-appropriate songs that adults will find themselves singing along to. They have included so many songs that not every song is a winner (some of the slow ones are boring) and songs that Miley wrote show that she is still learning how to songwrite. She also oversings a couple tunes. But overall this is very good, well produced and recommended.

Far Better than it has the Right to Be.......2007-07-06
Everyone above who is complaining that "this isn't real music" and that it is only a marketing ploy are people who haven't actually listened to the CD. The first disc (the "Hannah") side is completely how it is described. Just a boring collection of Disneyesque pop made to advertise a TV show. But somewhere along the way, someone let the album get good. The "Miley" disc is far, far better than it has any right to be. If it wasn't packaged with "Hannah Montana" it would be getting the rave reviews that follow fellow popsters Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani and Robyn, because it is just as good, if not better, then them all. Unfortunately too many people like to go on and on about the end of the music business and want to keep their street cred, so they fail to actually listen to music. Pop Music isn't a bad word, and this certainly isn't bad pop music. Hopefully Pitchforkmedia, long the perveyors of too-cool-for-you indie rock, but also champions of slick-as-hell pop music will catch wind and help out the cause.
Fantastic!.......2007-07-06
I just got a copy of this CD and can easily say I liked it. A lot of good beats and great singing. Certainly a good buy.
Best tracks (In my opinion)
1. We got the party
2. Good and broken
3. Start all over
4. Old blue jeans
5. Rockstar
Not for little kids.......2007-07-06
This album is too rocky for smaller kids under 10. I have this album along with the first hannah montana album. and kids at my house will only be allowed to listen to the first one. There are 3 songs from the show that are on this album that are ok, but that is all. then Miley has the song called "I miss you" and it's ok..
For any kids here at my house, i prefer mellow music until they are 11 or 12. the smaller kids under 10 or so will not be listening to this album.

If the 9-year-old in your life hasn't alerted you already, consider this your heads up: Not since Hilary Duff has Disney delivered the masses a tween sensation as hot as the double-life-leading Miss Hannah Montana. More important for speaker-blowing second- to seventh-graders and the parents forced to buy them CDs, though, no small-screen sensation transcends the tube more convincingly. Part party girl and part plain old good girl, Montana--a sweet-voiced, playful performer--never skimps on the pipes. Country fans will chalk that up to our rhyme-named heroine's lineage; 14-year-old Miley Cyrus, who plays Montana, is the daughter of Nashville star Billy Ray Cyrus (who duets on this disc's sentimental, twang-resistant last track). The rest of the world, though, is apt to find itself belting along based on Hannah's unsinkable hooks and frothy Ashlee-meets-Hilary vocals alone: theme song "Best of Both Worlds" bumps around off a Joan Jett-reminiscent springboard; "Who Said" rips a page from the emo diaries; and "Just Like You" ladles on harmonies sweet enough to attach a stick to. Additional tracks like Jesse McCartney's "She's No You" and B5's Earth Wind & Fire redo "Shining Star" are first-rate complements to the proceedings, but make no mistake: this dance-happy hybrid belongs to the reigning pop princess alone. --Tammy La Gorce

Daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, Hannah's production values are good. Bought for my daughter, Hannah is musical and fun.
Hannah Montana is genuine and talented........2007-06-19
My family and I love the CD and DVD we purchased of Hannah Montana last year. The soundtrack album is very well produced. We are awaiting the new CD and DVD release, and have ordered both several weeks in advance. Since she already debuted a half dozen tunes which cracked the top 100 in the first week, it will not surprise me if she does even better with this next album.
Her tunes are cleverly written, and they seem to stay with you similarly to (as one write above mentioned) the tunes of the Beatles. I cannot recall very many solo acts or groups that hinted at perhaps one day being as consistent as the Fab Four were. Granted, this is only the beginning of what could be a very successful career, but my guess is that with her pipes, her stage presence and genuine musical talent, and these catchy songs--written by some writers whom really know how to craft tunes with the right balance of unity and variety (including such imaginative B sections)--she will be on top for several years. Furthermore, we will most likely see a transition from Hannah Montana to Miley Cyrus (this may already be occurring with the new release, given 'who' is singing what songs on the album) in the near future.
Musically, I have observed that she uses a preponderance of E major, and that even when the melodies are diatonic they are not always easy to memorize after a couple of hearings. Interestingly, her voice sounds quite different when she strays into other keys, such as G major in "Life Is What You Make It" (not included on the current album), in which it is a tad more raspy; and C-sharp minor in "Nobody's Perfect" (also not included on this album, but see below) in which her timbre is brazen yet controlled. I hope that she eventually explores the lower range of her voice as she becomes more creative (maybe even writing more of her own material and performing with guitar in hand as the years progress). On the rare (albeit brief) occasions when she has ventured into the lower gamut, the tone quality is far different and compliments her 'normal' ambitus very nicely.
Those who like this CD may want to pick up the Hannah Montana: 2-Disc Special Edition Soundtrack as well. Sure, the tracks are nearly identical, but there is additional footage (exclusive Hannah Montana Backstage Secrets), autographed snapshots of Miley Cyrus, and a bonus track (audio) and live performance (video) of "Nobody's Perfect," a solid rocker which in the opinion of this writer is almost worth the price of the CDs itself. The track is arguably the most ambitious to date for the young singer. (N.B.: This review is being written before having heard the majority of the tracks on the just-released Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus CD.) "Nobody's Perfect" is performed remarkably well, with Miss Montana's stage presence and accompanying rhythmic synchronizations (hand gestures and choreography) augmenting an already intriguing piece of writing. The tune may interest those who enjoy relatively uncommon chord progressions in pop music. It begins and ends in C-sharp minor, but meanders effortlessly through a B minor/D major sound world, eventually gravitating toward E major. The combination and succession of pitch centers--and especially the harmonic tension created between the opening and closing key of C-sharp minor and the B minor/D major/G(!) major constructs within which the second major section of this work vacillates--provides a stark yet musically engaging contrast.
I appreciate the image Miss Montana has thus far portrayed as well. As a father of several children (including four daughters, each of which loves her music), it is gratifying to see a positive role model (with talent to burn) coming out of the Disney mindset. I wish her all the best in the years to come.
We want Hannah . . . not those other guys........2007-05-25
First of all, I give Hannah Montana 5 stars, at least I would, but they mix in all those other guys, Jesse McCartney, Everlife, B5, etc. But Hannah Montana sings only 8 songs. She should wait until she has more songs of her own before making an album. Plus she just came with her special edition soundtrack-$10 more and only 1 more song and a couple pictures-not worth it! If your a fan, get it. But if not, stick with other singers, like Hilary Duff. But if your saving your money wait 'till her second one comes out-10 new songs by Hannah Montana including Nobody's Perfect, Make Some Noise, and 8 never before heard songs! Plus a 2nd disc with 10 songs by Miley Cyrus (who plays Hannah.) So it depends on how big a fan you are.
Just go ahead and show your child how to set to auto-repeat..........2007-05-24
My daughter loves this CD. It was one of her favorite Christmas gifts, and she's played it four thousand times, it seems.
If you are looking for positive music for girls, with a singer who doesn't look like a hooker on stage, this is the album I'd recommmend! Hannah Montana is a great value for little girls, and her songs manage to focus on being who you are, not following peer pressure, and super-innocent attraction to a boy. This is truly girl music that a parent can get behind!

The Hannah Montana special edition soundtrack arrives so coolly p ackaged and with such a bonanza of extras that it might even induce budget-conscious tweens who already own the original to break open their piggy banks a second time. All the same hyper-charged, deliriously fun songs are here--the Radio Disney hit "If We Were a Movie" and the speaker-hazardous "Pumpin' up the Party" included--but so is a new number, "Nobody's Perfect," that again reaches out with a message from Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah, without mitigating the sky-high mood. Toe-tapping, indeed, is mandatory. Throughout. Other deluxe-edition tack-ons include signed snaps of the double-life-leading superstar, a certificate for a free "This Is the Life" ringtone, and a starter course of celebrity dish: in addition to a concert sliver featuring "Nobody's Perfect" on disc two (the DVD), Miss Cyrus leads her breathless fans on chummy, if minimally revealing, backstage tour. --Tammy La Gorce

This album is better than the 2nd one. This is the house favorite! this album is more suitable for smaller kids.
A Great CD for Tweens and Teens.......2007-06-13
I like the songs by Hannah Montana on this CD because they don't talk about boys and relationships but are focused more on a positive self image. There are a few songs at the end by other artists which aren't as good.
Can't Go Wrong.......2007-06-04
If you (or your kids) are (bubblegum) pop music, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, or Disney fans, this is definitely a soundtrack for you. Like the regular soundtrack, this 2-Disc Special Edition Hannah Montana CD is full of fun, get-your-body-moving songs that kids and adults can relate to. The bonus track and the extra features (backstage secrets hosted by Miley Cyrus herself, a live performance of "Nobody's Perfect," and 4 polaroid-style pictures) make it well worth shelling out that extra ten dollars.
This is a must buy!

Album Description
Until There's Nothing Left Of Us, featuring the single "Lips Like Morphine", is the latest offering from the Chicago based quintet. Kill Hannah's sexy songs and style to match have helped establish them in the arty alternative scene. Tirelessly touring, the band has a cult-like status to their die-hard army of fans--many inked with the band's distinctive heart in crosshairs logo.
Customer Reviews:
AMAZING.......2007-03-09
so pretty much i have decieded that kill hannah is freaking amazing!... they are in my top five bands!
something breath-taking from an industry that has been going stale.......2007-02-15
The Good
Cosmic keyboard tones and a steady drum beat warm you up for the driving guitars that follow on "Believer." Vocalist Mat Devine delivers with power and dark melodies. He has such a unique tone that I originally thought he was a woman. The riffs on "Lips Like Morphine" are as sharp as a knife piercing your skin. The songs chorus it delivered with a lot of energy and substance. "Black Poison Blood" brings the tempo and energy levels down a bit. The rhythms are reminiscent of early U2. The theme and tone is both dark and haunting.
Electronic effects and drumbeats dominate "The Collapse;" giving the track a new wave meets gothic feel to it. Kill Hannah keep the retro meets modern rock sound going with the instantly catchy "Crazy Angel." "The Songs That Saved My Life" is a vocal heavy track that is enhanced with soft keys and later driving riffage. This song really struck a chord with me because I can remember turning to music when I was down and out as a kid.
The Bad
The two minute opening introduction is cool for a live show, but unnecessary for the CD.
The Verdict
When approaching major label rock bands, I'm always a little apprehensive. With a lot of bands today, you're really getting a lot of the same. I was taken aback by Kill Hannah from the get-go. They have a heavy and dark tone, but have a pop-rock appeal to them. It's nice to hear something breath-taking from an industry that has been going stale.
Great!.......2006-12-17
Kill Hannah is a band that you don't want to miss out on. Their new album is amazing with an intro track that gets you ready for what's about to come. Pick up this CD and then go to one of their concerts, they are just as amazing live and you will not be dissapointed!
Good But Not What I Expected..........2006-10-25
Kill Hannah is a good band that does not get the recognition they probably deserve. However, after getting this album, it consequently turned out to be totally different than what I had orginally thought I was picking up at the record store. And don't get me wrong, this album is NOT TERRIBLE, but the whole relative sound was nowhere near what'd I thought after previewing a few tracks at first and being familiar with their earlier releases. Though it is a good album the band probably spent a lot of time working on, the album seemed to be more on the softer side. And though I'm not a die-hard KH fan, the softer side that may not matter. But, all in all, the tracks are wonderfully done and the band proves they could stand to do many more albums in the future. Filled with dark track names and soft musical ambition, Until There's Nothing Left of Us may or may not be what you want...???
Take a risk and check them out.......2006-10-11
I first heard Kill Hannah on a tour with Clear Static and Shiny Toy Guns earlier this year. I was hooked with the first set I heard from them. (I went on to hear them twice more in the next 3 days.)
I love this album. I expected it to be a little more high energy/fast paced based on the first album, but it's a wonderful compliment. The wonderful intro and outro bookend the album beautifully. Lips Like Morphine could be the song that finally brings them to the top.
If you want to hear some great alt rock, with touches of glam and emo thrown in, get this album. And, they tour nearly constantly, so check their websites for a show near you and be sure to see them live. Mat (the singer) has a great stage presence.

An overlooked great album........2007-04-19
Chicago based glam-goth-new waver-emo-electorock-shoegaze-whatever they happen to be getting labeled as this minute created this album a few years ago that was sadly overlooked by the mainstream music press to a great degree. Sadly they missed getting on the new wave bandwagon with the press where they could of dominated, or with the cure revialist a few years ago where they show some obvious influences. So lately they have been oddly lumped in with the latest wave of emo bands quite sadly.
I came across the album "For Never & Ever" after reading a review that quite correctly compared the album to Placebo's "Black Market Music". The singer Mat Devine's voice is somewhat high and is often compared to those along the line of Brian Molko(this isn't a bad thing in my book). However Kill Hannah, while having a clear sense of history and influences, doesn't sound like a clone of any certain previous group, unlike so many other groups that get lumped into revivialists movements.
This is one of my favorate albums, simply for the power and spirit many of the songs display, which is then contrasted by the dreamy introspectiveness of the other tracks. Certain tracks such as "Kennedy" or "Boys and Girls" seem like they could shake the building from its foundations, while others explore familar themes of youthful anxiety and wonder, all in very dreamy tunes.
PS: if nothing else, seeing them live will convert you.
One of my all time favorite albums.......2006-10-11
I saw Kill Hannah earlier this year with Clear Static and Shiny Toy Guns, and got hooked instantly. When I got this CD I played it constantly. It's probably the most played album on my iPod. There's not a bad track on it. They mix it up, with slow and fast, rock and electronic, and they succeed with all of it.
Their older material is very different than this album and the next one (Until There's Nothing Left of Us). The long-time fans tend to not like the new material, but us newer fans don't tend to like the old songs.
Get this album for some great alt rock. Kennedy should have been their break, but there are so many other awesome songs on here.
They tour almost constantly, so be sure to catch them in your area.
Pretty Original In Today's Times.......2006-07-02
Judging by the cover of this cd, one would be willing to guess that Kill Hannah is nothing more than a cookie-cutter emo/screamo/metalcore act, with very little substance. I mean look at the name. However don't let the name or the cover fool you; Kill Hannah is not your standard "scene" band. In fact they have little in common with any of the groups with which one might immediately associate them with. Actually they are probably one of the few band out there today still trying to pioneer a sound that is fresh and different. Though they've gone virtually unrecognized over the last three years since this album was released, I have a feeling all that's about to change. The time seems just right for Kill Hannah to flourish.
Opening up with the energetic "They Can't Save Us Now", you'll instantly get acquainted with what the guys have to offer. Mat Devine has a very unique way of delivering his vocals, sometimes sounding feminine and out of breathe, and at others rough and melodic. "For Never And Ever" has plenty of things going for it, that's for sure. The song writing is top-notch. Almost all the songs have an incredibly memorable chorus ("Kennedy" and "New Heart For Christmas" being the most recognizable). The subtle electronic elements that are sprinkled throughout the entire record add a nice sonic feeling to almost every song they are placed in. The guitars are extremely melodic, and their main focus seems to be creating a giant wall of sound around the listener, rather than bombarding one with technical ability (not to say the aren't talented though.) The drumming is great and on point as well, and combined with the bass playing of Greg Corner, the band is solid all around.
The great thing about the record though is that no two songs are alike. Every single one has a different and unique feeling, right down to the way Mat sings them. Kill Hannah is able to pull off so many twists and turns that any listener should be able to appreciate how diverse they can get. Rockers like "From Now On" and "Race The Dream" show the up-tempo nature of the band, while somber pieces like "Raining All The Time" and "10 More Minutes With You" show off their ability to slow it down. Front to back not a single thing to complain about.
Although they're not on the radar at the moment, I think Kill Hannah is about to break with their upcoming album "Until There's Nothing Left Of Us". Look at a band like 30 Seconds To Mars, who are incredibly talented and went virtually unnoticed with their first record. Now their doing extremely well. And with playing a similar style of electronic influenced alternative rock like Kill Hannah, I wouldn't be surprised if KH breaks out in August. "For Never And Ever" is a great listen for all fans of alternative and rock, and really has a lot of sleeper value. With the band about to release their newest cd soon, now is a great time to look into this offering. You won't be disappointed.
One Of The Most Underrated Groups Of The Moment.......2006-06-23
I gotta say, looking at the photo of the band on the back of the CD case, I didn't know what to think of Killhannah. They all dress with pants so tight, you can tell their religion and pretty much look like a second-tier emo act. Listen to the music, however, and such is not the case. Killhannah are one of very few original acts out there. You might remember the single "Kennedy" from back in 2003, but other than that, these guys haven't had much exposure. And what a shame that is. Killhannah may very well be the kick in the pants the rock world needs.
Taking a page from their fellow Chicago breathren and influences in Smashing Pumpkins, Killhannah combine a solid alternative backbone with dense electronics. A frontman who sings his lyrics a little high-pitched, but with plenty of conviction and plenty of pop-hooks. It's hard not to hear a lot of Pumpkins influence in their music, but make no mistake, they also are not even close to being a carbon copy. Despite being a mere eleven tracks long, "For Never & Ever" manages to lay all of the cards on the table, establishing a new sound all their own. "New Heart For X-Mas" "Racing The Dream" and "They Can't Save Us Now" are the real standouts, and songs you need to hear if you are looking into the group.
Hopefully when they put out their next album, it will take Killhannah to the next level. I would love to see a band like this destroy the bland emo and retro scene in an instant. One of the true alternative bands left, one that can't be described in a word, confined to a genre. Believe all the good things you've heard about Killhannah. They are all true.
Some of the old stuff is better.......2006-05-18
I've been a fan of theirs for maybe 4 or 5 years now. So I've heard all of their older songs. Some of their old recordings I've preferred to the newly recorded old songs. Such as "Bigshot", "Love Sick", original "I Wanna Be A Kennedy", "Crybaby",&etc.
A wonderful group of guys&very loyal to their fans, I sort of wish they had come out with fresh, new songs for their debut album. But I will still love them either way. I've heard a couple of their new songs at one of their shows in April and so far it sounds awesome. I expect more great music from these boys.
For older fans, like myself, their older material is probably more noteworthy. For newer fans, they don't know what they've been missing these last few years.

Customer Reviews:
Miley Cyrus is awesome!.......2007-04-10
Miley Cyrus, better known as teen pop sensation "Hannah Montana" does a wonderful job in this CD, and it is escpecially good for her first album.
I can relate to several of the songs. And even even though most people can't relate to passages for example, like, "pictures and autoghraphs/you get your face in all the magazines/the best part is that, you get to be whoever you wanna be!" or "Half the time I've got my name in lights, the other half I'm by your side", Miley is sending the message that celeberties aren't any different from any of us, they're just regular people. Also, in the few songs like that, you CAN relate to most of the song. Miley is extremely talented and amazing, and also a fantastic rolemodel. She is a Christian, and in one of her interviews, she tells that her and her mom's motto is "Modest is Hottest", and she does stay true to that motto. So I say, Keep up the good work, Miley, and don't ever change!
The ONLY reason I gave this CD 4 stars and not 5 is because at the end of the CD, there were 4 songs from other stars, and I don't think she needed them there. I do enjoy "Find yourself in You." by Everlife. The other 3 singers and songs I wasn't so crazy about, and I think that they are not very good rolemodels, unlike Miley. I mean, maybe for some reason, they had to be there, but no matter what, I still say that this is an awesome CD!!!!!!!!!!

Though Puccini's trilogy of one-act operas, Il Trittico, is hard to love in its totality, Suor Angelica shows the composer retreating from melodramatic verismo into a more lyrical expression, as befits this story of a nun driven to suicide when told her child is dead. Though this cast isn't ideal, it more than does the job, with Joan Sutherland in unusually articulate, dramatically alert form. As her evil, unyielding aunt, Christa Ludwig avoids obvious melodramatics and is plenty chilling as a result. Lots of good singers turn up in minor roles, such as Marie McLaughlin and Della Jones. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Second-rate to Gallardo-Domas and Pappano.......2005-08-26
This review compares three of the recordings of Suor Angelica, with the finding that the recording of this miniature gem in the boxed set of Puccini's Il Trittico conducted by Antonio Pappano far exceeds the others in various qualities.
The best first. The vocal performances of both the title role (Cristina Gallardo-Domas) and la Zia Principessa (Bernadette Manca di Nissa) offer a great breadth of interpretation and an honest and true attention to pure vocal production. I have the very slightest of quibbles with one specific response from Gallardo-Domas' Angelica to her aunt, "La Vergine ci ascolta e Lei vi giudica!" is offered much too anglrily, where the score is marked "coldly." The wonderful choral work that supports the action and provides so much of the exposition is a well-modulated performance of Puccini's best writing for women's voices in non-starring roles. Indeed, the balance between the soloists, chorus, and orchestra is keenly maintained througout, ever allowing the orchestra and chorus to be equals to the soloists. Lastly, Pappano's pacing seems the most accomplished of all the recordings.
The worst second. The performance of the Rome Opera Orchestra & Chorus with Fedora Barbieri and Victoria de Los Angeles is frightful. The balance is muddy, and the soloists are miked so closely that they become strident. Worse yet is that the editing was inattentive, and several badly pitched tones made their way to the final recording. --And the pitch problems continue throughout, sometimes sharp, sometimes flat. The chorus members' diction is almost slurred, and a sloppy ensemble results in many nice melodies being unintelligible.
The most surprising recording is conducted by Richard Bonynge and stars Joan Sutherland and Christ Ludwig. As another reviewer noted, Dame Sutherland is past her prime, recording the role at age 52. If only we had a recording of Angelica from her at 30! As it is, I believe Richard Bonynge is the one driving a stake through the heart of this work. His readings alternate between a rush through lyric passages and tearing through the recitativo segments at a full tilt. But it seems so strange because the balance favors the women's voices, making the orchestra extraordinarily subservient. Finally, the performances in general seem less than committed. For example, Sutherland lacks both the fire and the meek submissiveness that should complicate the character.
A Sutherland treat.......2003-06-11
What a treat! Hearing Sutherland doing non-Bel Canto is always kinda exciting. She's thrilled to be doing something outside of her safety-net. Though this was recorded past Joan's prime (she was 52) she still gives her best efforts and ultimately, an honest and compelling portrayl. As Joan got older, the voice lost gleam and power -- which made her more committed to the dramatic aspect of her performances. Sutherland makes you want to cry as she performs this delicate role. Joan does a great job at portraying the frail Suor Angelica, sent to live in a Convent because of her child born in wedlock. Angelica is weak with sadness, and Joan does a great job at getting that through. Christa Ludwig, La zia Principessa, does an expert job at not portraying the cold hurtful heartless powerful woman, but a character with real depth and back story. Ludwig's strong hand is at her truthful acting, how she creates and encompasses real and honest characters and brings life to her roles. At 52, this mezzo still has a lot of voice left in her.
An exciting moment is when La zia Principessa/Ludwig snears, "...you have stained our white crest" and Angelica unexpectedly spits in her face, "Sorella di mia madre, voi siete inesorable (My mother's siter, you are unrelenting!" Now THAT'S was exciting! You don't expect that, and Sutherland does it amazingly well! And that classic Puccini moment of climax is when La zia Principessa tells Angelica that Angelica's child died. Angelica says "É morto? (He's dead?)" and Angelica lets out this Tosca howling scream! Pretty chilling and cool.
"Senza mamma, o bimbo, tu sei morto" is touching. Renata Scotto's is my favorite, and I hear Mirella Freni, Ilona Tokody, and Leontyne Price also do excellent renditions).
Now from the point where Angelica utters, "Ah, son dannata! (Oh, I am damned!)" The rest of the opera is heart-breaking! Angelica/Sutherland flies off into vocal feights as she pleads to the Madonna to not let her die in damnation after she commits the mortal sin of concocting a poison potion that she drinks to kill herself. She asks the Madonna to give her a sign of grace and save her, "Madonna! Madonna! Salvami! Salvami!" Bonynge does a wonderful job of evoking from this point the full power and heights of what Puccini wanted! You are totally imagining the room fillng with light and the Madonna comes toward her with her child and the child takes his first steps. There is bliss and forgiveness and WONDERFULNESS!!
A bonus on this CD is "Vissi d'arte" from Tosca. Frankly, I wasn't expecting the best. However, contrary to what I was anticipating, she sings with surprisingly convincing honesty. You really feel the torment Tosca is going through. Who knew Joan could pull it off?? Also, this was recorded 6 years before Suor Angelica (she was 46), so the voice is in fairer condition.
If you're someone who doesn't like Sutherland, again, this does not represent her in her prime -- her high notes aren't wonderful (including the ending Bb in "Senza mamma..." which is ever so slightly under pitch) and the voice in general has lost some sparkle. And if you're a fan of the opera then you're going to compare her voice to other singers who recorded this in their prime and you're going find fault. I recommend this recording only for fans of good drama. And if you've grown to appreciate Sutherland, than you'll enjoy this. I know I did!
A beautiful and dreamlike recording.......2001-09-07
With so many great recordings of 'Suor Angelica', the Puccini fan can hardly choose just one version. Each notable recording and its star (including Tebaldi, Scotto, Ricciarelli, and Popp) has made an individual stamp on the role, and consequently, on the opera. This recording is no exception, and gives the listener a regal Angelica, and at times a rather dreamlike atmosphere. The character of Angelica was of royal birth, a princess forced into life as a nun because of her illegitimate child - and Joan Sutherland's bearing and large voice gives us the most royal heroine of any recording. Recorded in the early 1970s, Sutherland is in remarkable voice, and she has dramatic involvement in the character greater than many of other recorded performances. Also, in this interpretation of score, Sutherland's trademark vague diction is somehow less annoying than it usually is. Christa Ludwig sings with her typical lush tone, and she makes for a cold, ominous, and almost oracular Princepesa. Richard Bonynge is not a conductor one associates with Puccini, and he leads a rather gentle and occasionally eerie interpretation, but also ably brings out the everyday conversational tone of the first half of the opera. The conflicts and climaxes, though alive with tension, are not what one thinks of as verismo style. Yet this approach suits his principle singers, as well as the predominantly British supporting cast. It all adds up to a highly individualized but successful version of the opera. There is no definitive Angelica out there, at least not for me. I have collected many, and Sutherland makes a great addition. I listen to the other recordings frequently; the Puccini lover should not miss the neurotic fragility of Lucia Popp (BMG; available at Amazon UK) or the tragic impact of Renata Scotto (Sony). But as often as I listen to these others I will return to this recording for its distinct individual merits. I purchased this with skepticism, but was pleasantly surprised by what I heard.
Tones like a crystal bell.......2000-07-12
In Suor Angelica Puccini ranges from childlike playfulness to deepest despair in a short opera easily enjoyed in one sitting. And the voices on this CD are all clear and harmonious. However I feel Bonynge's interpretation focuses on voice rather than mood. Rather than spritely as in other versions, here the tempo feels held back, dampening some of the excitement, so the listener feels as if nostalgically looking back at a distant event rather than being alive in the moment's laughter, excitement, and agony. However Dame Sutherland, of course, is incomparable, with a voice like clear light.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

I love all of the songs that she sings and the concert DVD is awesome. the only thing that would make it better would be if it didn't have all those other artists on the CD.
