Although California jazz is often considered synonymous with the "cool" sounds of musicians like Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan, the West Coast milieu was actually as diverse as the East Coast jazz scene. This impressive four-disc collection chronologically documents the progression and development of the many genres existing within the context of California jazz. While cerebral players like Dave Brubeck, Jimmy Guiffre, and Art Pepper are featured here, this anthology also includes works by more passionate figures, including Charles Mingus and Dexter Gordon. Highlighting cuts by visitors like Miles Davis alongside performances of local heroes like Shelly Manne and Howard Rumsey, this compilation is as enjoyable as it is instructive. From cool to swing to bop to bossa nova and beyond, California had it all. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars A Great Jazz Collection-- Even If You're Just A Casual Fan!.......2004-12-20

This 4 CD, 62 song set is a must have for jazz fans! What a great range of artists!
It covers the California Jazz Scene on the Contemporary Records label from 1950-1964.
Some of the most influential artists of all time recorded for Contemporary Records during these years, and this box set is truly awesome!
A 70 page booklet comes with the set with all kinds of great essays and trivia about the California Jazz Scene in the 50's and 60's, as well as complete track-by-track info. about every song.

Hey, if you're just a casual jazz fan and don't know that much about this music, this is a great primer for you!

GET THIS BOX SET!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best of the best in the music.......2000-04-29

Don't be put off by the title AN ANTHOLOGY OF CALIFORNIA JAZZ which may conjure up some bland, ice-cream type, hair bleached, shallow feel-good music. This boxed set has excerpts from some of the very best jazz of the fifties, period, and includes work by Mr Miles Davis, Mr Sonny Rollins, Mr Ornette Coleman,Mr Clifford Brown, Mr Ben Webster and Mr Art Tatum. It includes, for me, some of my all time favourite tracks from some all time favourite albums including: BERNIE'S TUNE and MY FUNNY VALENTINE by the ORIGINAL Mulligan Quartet;ETUDE DE CONCERT by Shelley Manne and his Men; DAAHOUD by the Clifford Brown Ensemble; BLUE SANDS by the Chico Hamilton Quintet which has one of Mr Jim Hall's greatest solos ; KATANGA by Curtis Amy Sextet featuring the work of underrated unknown trumpet player Mr Dupree Bolton; YOU'D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO by the Art Pepper Quartet featuring the rhythm section of Mr Miles Davis; THE FOX by the Harold Land Quintet again featuring Mr Dupree Bolton on trumpet;and finally, 2 DEGREES EAST, 3 DEGREES WEST which is a truly beautiful track from a great album by Mr John Lewis called GRAND ENCOUNTERS (Bill Perkins, John Lewis, Jim Hall, Percy Heath, Chico Hamilton). Because there is so much good music on this anthology, it's best to take it a little at a time so rich are its benefits. Once you put on Track One of CD one and hear the palpable excitement of Mr Wardell Gray and Mr Dexter Gordon live, there may, however, be no turning back! GO FOR IT! One of my best buys of 1999.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-07-29

This is a fantastic set. When can we expect another collection

4 out of 5 stars A little taste of the era.......1999-07-08

This collection along with the enclosed notes will help any jazz listener, new or old, to savor a little taste of the era. It may also whet your appetite, as it did mine, for more music from some of the featured artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great sampling of the greatest groups of COOL Jazz.......1999-02-06

Getz, Mulligan, John Lewis, Eric Dolphy, Woody Hermans Herd, Chet Baker (at his best), Cal Tjader - The truly greats of the era play some of the best tunes, like Bernies Tune, and My Funny Valentine, and others of the West Coast phenom! I truly enjoyed the mix and the variety of this monumental package. I consider it a milestone in what may become a revival of really cool sound. Thanks.

This 4-CD set marks the 45th anniversary of Impulse Records and also serves as audio accompaniment to Ashley Kahn's book, The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. John Coltrane was the first major artist to sign with ABC-Paramount's fledgling subsidiary in 1961 and it was an inspired choice, his rising prominence and adventurous spirit immediately identifying Impulse with a dynamic shift in jazz. With its gatefold album covers and black and orange graphics, Impulse also added some visual panache to the revolution. While Coltrane--represented here by tracks such as "Greensleeves," "Impressions" and a segment from his signature A Love Supreme--was clearly the label's inspiration, Bob Thiele was one of the great jazz record producers, bent on documenting the best veteran musicians as well as the avant-garde. You hear it in superb tracks here from Earl Hines, Count Basie and Coleman Hawkins, as well as stellar performances by major figures of modern jazz like Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus. There are also plenty of appearances by Coltrane's associates, like McCoy Tyner and Alice Coltrane, as well as the revolutionaries that Coltrane and Thiele nurtured, among them Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders. It all contributes to a survey of what was most vital in jazz in the 1960s and early '70s that no other single label could manage. --Stuart Broomer

4 out of 5 stars Scottanthony.......2007-02-10

I have been listening/collecting Impulse albums for almost 25 years. It is very nice to see such a collection that was clearly put together with quite a bit of care and interest. Sounds wonderful and the song selection is superb. My only minor quibble is that it would have been nice to have one more CD devoted to more of the later releases especially with artists from the label that are not represented (i.e. Sam Rivers, Ornette Coleman and a little more from some others (Johnny Hartman, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp). Very nice job - and the Ashley Kahn book makes this a wonderful weekend getaway

4 out of 5 stars A Revelatory Collection - ****1/2.......2006-08-04

Impulse Records rode point in the progressive jazz movement of the 1960's and early 1970's, the end of what is considered jazz's last "Golden Age". In the sixteen years of its existence as a subsidiary of ABC Records, Impulse brought together many jazz legends and young upstarts, from Earl "Fatha" Hines and Count Basie to Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. And of course there was their standard-bearer, John Coltrane, who enjoyed his last and most creatively productive years there, offering among others, his masterpiece, "A Love Supreme". This four-disc set presents the wealth of artists and styles that worked under the prestigious orange-and-black umbrella of Impulse: names like Gil Evans, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, McCoy Tyner, Gato Barbieri, Ahmad Jamal, and many others. It's all in here, the cool, the post-bop, the avant-garde, and the chronological progression is fascinating, as the music moves from a more traditional to a more radical voice, echoing the tumult of the 1960's. (Case in point: the middle section of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan" - music doesn't get more "out there" than this.) Impulse had the reputation as a haven for the young, black, "angry" tenor sax player, and while several of their artists may have fit that profile, there was really much more variety to the music. Other influences were evident, like Eastern mysticism, (Pharoah Sanders with Leon Thomas, and Alice Coltrane), and the growing cross-pollination of rock and soul/funk (Gabor Szabo, Keith Jarrett) reflecting jazz's next major direction, "fusion". There are some familiar pieces here, especially those from John Coltrane, but much of it is revelatory, especially to the casual jazz fan like me. The packaging for this box set is nothing spectacular (though it is reminiscent of the glossy "gatefold" covers of the original LPs), but that apparently helps keep the price reasonable for a four-disc collection of over four hours of classic jazz. It's a rich and rewarding musical journey.

(Note: If you are curious but don't wish to invest in the whole set, there is also a budget-priced one-disc sampler available. Also released, concurrent with this set, is a series of single-disc compilations of artists such as John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, and others. I've purchased the Keith Jarrett collection and highly recommend it.)

1 out of 5 stars Problems.......2006-08-01

The CD#2 is wrong. There is a manufacturing defect. CD#2 is the same than CD#1. Should be replaced. I live abroad.
How can be solved?

4 out of 5 stars A very nice but limited overview.......2006-06-15

If nothing else, this four cd set gives a nice overview of the Impluse jazz label and shows the impact it had on modern jazz. What's really revealing is the diversity of music that was recorded. It wasn't just screaming atonal tenor saxophones; there was Ben Webster, Count Basie, Earl Hines as well as hard bop illuminaries such as Art Blakey, Roy Haynes and others. In short there was a lot of musical styles to be had, and this might surprise some who always thought of Impulse as just Trane or Pharoah Sanders.

The shortcoming of this set however is the time limitations that four cd's offer. There is no way to get as much music on here as the label truly deserves. So you're stuck with the personal choices of Ashley Kahn who compiled this set and who also wrote the book about the label. Mostly I can't quibble with the choices, but how Sam Rivers fails to show up here is beyond my comprehension. Yet, the thirty three minute "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by Pharoah Sanders IS here as is "Gypsy Queen" by the late great guitarist Gabor Szabo......so all is not lost.

The packaging is nice enough, the mastering is impeccable and the price for such great music is right. I just wish there were a couple of more cd's in this collection. A label such as Impulse deserves the super deluxe treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance of Waltzes.......2000-12-23

In this CD performed by André Rieu, waltz music takes a very different path in sound and style. It is not as all the other walzes by Strauss that we have listened before, since it has the very special Rieu's magical touch. Even when the titles of the songs are in spanish, anyone can identify the waltzes with just the listening of the first bars. It is all wonderful. In these performances of Strauss Waltzes, the piano is arrenged, included and heard in those waltzes where it was usually absent. In the song "Strauss y Compañia", the music of Strauss is very well mixed with that of other composers; it is like a popurri of Strauss Waltzes very well mixed and played. Also, "Golondrinas de Austria", is an excellent example of the beautiful melody of the Strauss, not written by Johann but written by his brother Joseph, it is not less than any of Johann's music. All in all, this CD contains some of the best waltz music that one can listen to with the different and fabulous sound that André Rieu has to offer us.

2 out of 5 stars Sequel Album to a Great Album is always a danger!.......2006-02-10

Music industry seems to like to bet on 'the formula of success' and even artists seem to follow this dangerous track.

Lalo Schifrin was the creative arranger and composer of one the classic albums in the 60s which combined Jazz with Baroque and Renaissance Music. A quite inspired combination with the best musicians in the place in an album which is still available here @Amazon ('The Dissection and Reconstruction of Music ... as a tribute to Marquis de Sade' on Verve Records, produced by Creed Taylor).

Now this sequel album has not achieved the same degree of inspiration though Schifrin could count on great musicians like Ray Brown and Grady Tate.

2 out of 5 stars Great Musicians, Good Music but No Inspiration!.......2006-02-10

I think that the kind of experience which involves mix of classical music and jazz approach is a most delicate and dangerous one.

Lalo Schifrin and his longtime collaboration with the London Symphony did not convince me to listen to it more than some few times.

Great musicians, master performance, good arrangements but ... something's missing!

The best Lalo Schifrin you can get is on his Jazz albums and soundtracks. Don't lose them.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing musical journey.......2000-07-05

    Album Description

The Third World is the initial session that mixed Gato Barbieri's free jazz tenor playing with Latin and Brazilian influences. It's also the album that brought Barbieri positive attention from the college crowds of the late '60s. He would expand on this musical combination with his next few Flying Dutchman releases as well as his first recordings for the Impulse! label. The records made between 1969 through 1974 find Barbieri creating a danceable yet fiery combination of South American rhythms and free jazz forcefulness. Strangely, once Barbieri signed with A&M, he began making commercial records geared to fans of Herb Alpert, sounding nothing like his earlier albums. RCA Victor. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Guitarist Jaime Valle - award winning jazz musician........1999-03-15

Guitarist Jaime Valle is a San Diego-based jazz musician. He has won the Best Latin Jazz Award in San Diego every year since 1994. He performs world-wide with the group Equinox.

5 out of 5 stars Jaime Valle plays his life's sounds via "Third Voyage.".......1999-03-11

Jaime Valle is his music! The depth of the rhythms, jazz phrasing, presented as easy, but complex, keep you moving throughout "Third Voyage." Jaime Valle makes you grin, cry, dance and move, while staying honest to the music and listener. The musicians play as one and Jaime Valle keeps the mix flowing without acting as his own track. Everyone gets the job done as the music pulls you into a world of melded music traditions and newer sounds fed by jazz, latin salsas and the continuing evolution of jazz guitar.

this is one of the best sound around. each song is written with heart

    5 out of 5 stars JDylan420@aol.com.......1999-02-05

". . .Valle draws his diverse influences to create music that is succinctly Latin, yet worldly in its themes and textures -- earthy, spiritual, soulful, and romantic. In song after song, without exception, he defies a typical guitarist's self-absorption and generously displays highs, lows and in-betweens. The emotions from Valle's guitar reach out seductively, sometimes forcefully, to encourage the listener to join his musical journey. On par with Valle's playing is his attention to cohesion and continuity." --Gerald Poindexter SOUNDWAVES...CD REVIEWS

5 out of 5 stars Pusating and sublime -- Valle's new album throbs with energy.......1999-02-05

Instantly, this powerful music hits your guts. Bam ! You're flying. Valle surrounds himself with an All-Star Latin Jazz cast .... and it's hard to pick which cut opens up the most space for your feelings to soar. This album is, perhaps, modern space-ship Latin blast-off music. Vocalist Coral Thuett is whisperingly sweet; bassist Skrabak is in the groove; the whole band churns. THIRD VOYAGE makes me smile.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary New Jazz - Classical Brazilian Guitar.......2006-04-03

Since Egberto Gismonti made his debut on American soil, back in the seventies, we haven't heard nothing like that. This cd carries the live performances of Gui Mallon's ensemble in the famous Montreux Jazz Festival. The compositions bring a flavour of the Brazilian exotic fauna with impecable playing from all the excellent eleven musicians of this mini orchestra, which is formed of a classical string quintet, sax, flute, three percussionists and Gui Mallon on the guitar.

If the instrumentation is rare, the music's simply beyond any classification. There is nothing that can compares to that; a blend of Brazilian classical, folk music, jazz and contemporary. At times, it sounds like progressive jazz-rock or even renaissance music. Simply Amazing !!!

5 out of 5 stars Great and strange smooth Jazz.......2005-06-29

From start to finish, this is a magical show. The guitarist is an elemental force in this great CD. He's stabbs at the guitar, as in the chaotic denouement of mystical power or limning an ominous waterfall. What pushes this album into the zone of innovation is his work as a sequencer and producer, which gives the lie to any accusation of a strang and smooth jazz from BRazil", this means jazz musicians superimposing their tunes on synthetic grooves. What Mallon does is infallibly organic, even when he's performing radical reconstructive surgery. There's more magic than junk to this experiment, and one can only hope he'll explore this avenue further. Great CD...

5 out of 5 stars A NEW STAR HAS ARRIVED !!!.......2004-10-13

Beautiful instrumental Brazilian music played live at the famous MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL. No tricks, only pure genuine sounds from acoustic instruments, arranged for 14 musicians . Original compositions that bring visions of a tropical paradise and, also, visions of the Brazilian urban inferno.
Gui Mallon's "Live at Montreux" is the most original, yet despretencious, sincere, Brazilian record in a long , long time. Tracks like IPANEMA SUNSET, LEK, CANTO INDIO are like paintings. A new star has arrived !!!
