Library of Congress Archive.......2000-07-30
The 13 tracks on this CD have been selected from the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Culture where recordings are stored of cowboys and old cattlemen singing these songs from the Texas cattle trails years ago. The singers are not professional singers, they are men who knew the cattle and the hardship of the old drives. You liked LONESOME DOVE? These are the songs those men would sing. I am 66 and a native Texan; my grandfather was a trail-driver and sang these songs to me when I was a child. The music is authentic, sentimental, sometimes funny. There are even cattle calls included. An excellent record.

With the rise of another generation of English folk musicians like Eliza Carthy reviving again the interest in traditional English music, there's always a need to look back a few generations to see where the songs come from. In the seemingly endless reissues of the Alan Lomax recordings from the '50s and '60s there are treasures to be found, and his field trips to England, Ireland, and Scotland offer a lot of musical bounty. This set was made in cooperation with Peter Kennedy and the BBC, and offers a wealth of songs that were on the verge of being lost to the very mediums that preserved them, the gramophone and the radio. Lomax and Kennedy scoured the nation in 1951, finding the singers, accordionists, and fiddlers who still played the old songs, informally at home and professionally at dances and clubs, and made sure they were not forgotten. While the songs are familiar to fans of revivalists like Carthy and the previous generation like Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, here we get the pure, unadulterated tales of country life and love. --Louis Gibson

Impressive collection.......2006-01-17
Geez, who is this ignoramus below? John, first of all, no "master tapes" for the recordings on this disc exist. These early sessions of Bix were made in the mid-1920s, a full 20-25 years before the use of magnetic tape in commercial recording studios. Everything on this set was originally recorded directly to wax discs, from which metal masters, mothers, stampers, and eventually commercial shellac pressings were made. In the eighty years since, many of the metal parts have either vanished, been destroyed, or corroded to the point where the best source material has become the commercial pressings themselves--and as any collector will tell you, many of the original recordings on this set are quite rare, and to hear them in any condition is a treat. To top it off, most of the recordings here were made acoustically, with the musicians performing into a horn that funneled the sound waves to a vibraring stylus that etched grooves in that wax disc. Not eactly high fidelity! Having said that, the remastering on this set really is superb, in many cases, these are the best transfers of this material I've ever heard (and as a big-time Bix fan, I've heard quite a few!). Not only are all of the master takes here, but every known surviving alternate as well.
Very few cornet solos on the first disc!!?? Buddy, you need to get your ears checked. Bix lets out quite a few hot cornet solos in his recordings with the Wolverines--not to mention his legendary solo on Goldkette's recording of "I Didn't Know." True, Bix is sometimes lost in the later Goldkette recordings, but that doesn't diminish their importance.
When you consider that the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens collection is only twenty-five dollars, it becomes obvious that the publishers of *those* discs should be put in jail! The Hot Fives and Hot Sevens were put out by JSP, a private British label well-known for bootlegging other reissues. They get away with it because other small reissue labels that put forth the money and time to restore these old recordings can't afford to take JSP to court for reusing their remasterings without permission or compensation. In a very few instances, JSP originated the remasterings, but even so, JSP pays no royalties to song composers, no mechanical licenses for the use of songs, and does not license any of the vintage recordings it releases. When you cut corners and steal materials, it's no wonder JSP can make their sets so cheap! And don't get started about how the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens sound better than this set. That's a result of the original recordings themselves, not the reissue sound engineer (who, ironically is the same for both sets, John R. T. Davies). The Hot Fives and Hot Sevens were recorded mostly for OKeh, known in the 1920s for having one of the best recording systems in the business, and superior-quality pressings. Many of Bix's earliest recordings (especiallly those on Disc 1 here) were made for tiny Gennett, known for having one of the crudest recording systems coupled with mediocre-quality pressings. When comparing the two, of course Armstrong's OKeh 78s will sound cleaner and clearer.
Meanwhile, as someone who has produced half-a-dozen CD reissues myself, I can tell you that doing so doesn't come cheap at all--especially not for a set like this. Finding clean copies of the recordings, making decent transfers, doing the restoration, licensing the songs and recordings, researching and writing the liner notes, and printing and pressing the whole package is incredibly time-consuming and costly. To make matters worse, the relatively narrow appeal of this set (only libraries or die-hard Bix fans) means that relatively few copies will be sold--perhaps only a thousand, maybe two or three (most buyers will undoubtedly opt for simple one or two disc sets without all the alternates). Simple economic forces are at work here; the set was expensive to produce, relatively few will be sold, thus each set will be somewhat expensive. Heck, you think this is expensive, check out the Bix & Tram Mosaic set! Better yet, I dare you to find clean original copies of all of the 78s on this set for the same price. In all liklihood, in today's collector market, you couldn't do the latter for under $20,000. When you put it into perspective, this set is really quite a bargain. Furthermore, knowing the way the reissue business works, I seriously doubt that the people behind this production are making much money--if any--on it. It's clearly a labor of love, not a get-rich-scheme. Believe me, there are far easier ways to make money out there.
For the record, I have no connection with Sunbeam or Origin Jazz Library--I'm just an extremely satisfied customer. I have all five volumes of Bix Restored, and while I favor some above others, all are winners. If I had to pick a single favorite, it would probably be this one, Volume 1. If you like Bix, there's really no other choice. The Bix here is young, enthusiastic, and a little wild. His playing is already brilliant, and I find the Wolverines, Trumbauer, and Goldkette settings here to provide more satisfying jazz accompaniment to Bix's cornet than Whiteman's band on the later discs. If you like Bix, get this set. You won't be sorry.
A Rip Off.......2004-03-30
The title, Bix Restored, is a bit illusive, unless by "restored" you mean dragging the master tapes around behind a truck over broken glass.
As for the music, very few cuts on the first couple CD's even have a cornet solo!
When you consider that the Hot Fives and Sevens collection is only twenty five dollars it becomes obvious that these publishers should be put in jail for charging this much dough.
A Rosetta Stone of Jazz.......2002-11-15
Ranks immedietly with the complete Dial sessions of Parker and the complete Hot Fives & Sevens of Louis Armstrong. A wonderfully mastered and thoughtfully arranged presentation.
Jolly Good Jazz.......2002-02-11
For those truly love early Jazz from the roots of Ragtime, and Bix Beiderbecke's valuable contributions to this art form, this album is a must! It is pure Jazz joy! Having the different takes of the same pieces to compare is wonderful. Through these you can clearly hear and feel Bix's improvisation skills at work. The two takes of Slow River are excellent examples of playing what he feels at the moment. They are both marvelous. The vocal music is fun to hear too. The vocals by the Keller Sisters on Sunday cuts are archetypal, and bring visions of Betty Boop dancing in my head when I listen to them. The re-mastering work done by John R.T. Davies and Micheal Kieffer is superb. This very jolly music, and is a "must have" album set for Bixophiles.

With no shortage of murderous lovers, women of sin, and Eden-like downfalls, these are dark dirges masquerading as ditties. First in the Archive of Folk Culture series issued by the Library of Congress in 1942, Anglo-American Ballads publicly premiered field recordings under the direction of Alan Lomax. Gathered primarily in the rural South in the '30s and early '40s, these recordings (like FDR's WPA initiates) documented everyday life. In their current incarnation, the objective has not changed; the recordings are captured with their intentional departure from commercialism intact. While the accompanying booklet details the history within the history, the songs betray the influences of Elizabethan England and all the British Isles, as well as the Appalachian-dwelling Scotch-Irish from whence much distinctly American music comes. Not easy listening, the ballads vary from the melodious warmth of E.C. Ball's "Pretty Polly" to the reedy scratch of Mrs. Texas Gladden. --Paige La Grone

A Treat!.......2001-06-14
The only thing that would have made this a better recording would have been additional comments from the recorded individuals as to where they learned the songs, what year it was, and how they learned the songs. I grew up hearing similar versions of many of these songs. It was truly a treat to have copies of the recordings made by Mr. Lomax in the field. I can now listen to these while I read through his books.

Mr. Jelly Lord was long past his prime when Alan Lomax happened upon him in 1938, tending bar, playing piano and working as a cook at Washington, D.C.'s Jungle Inn. No longer the struttin' dandy who had redefined jazz in the 1920s, Morton, having lost almost everything in the '30s, had disappeared from the music scene completely. Bedraggled countenance aside, he still possessed a luminous soul and sharp memory. Here, on the first of the volumes of Lomax's Library of Congress recordings, he goes about recounting (orally and instrumentally) the history, both his and the music's--its roots, its evolution, and the distinctions between what was there when he showed up and how he changed it forever. An invaluable, moving document that amply illustrates the breadth and depth of Morton's intellect. --David McGee

an older relaxed jelly roll........2007-02-22
recorded in 1938, an older jelly roll morton sings and plays solo piano on a variety of blues, rags, and folk tunes that harken back to the early days of the 20th century. listening to these relaxed, wonderful performances is like evesdropping in on somebody playing at a beer joint back in the days when ragtime and the blues were forces in popular music. mr morton's voice is easy and pleasing, and his piano playing a joy. he may have been up in years when he recorded this stuff but his enthusiasm for music still comes through like that of a young man. i can almost taste the cheap beer and hear the clacking of pool balls as i listen to this stuff. music to transport you into america's past. a real treat.
Great Jazz Piano.......2001-11-14
(...)
First, this CD features some of Morton's finest piano performances. The two versions of "Maple Leaf Rag" constitute Morton's demonstration of the transformation of ragtime into jazz, with the second version a magnificently swinging jazz performance. Similarly, Morton shows how "Tiger Rag" was allegedly created from a French quadrille, before delivering a stomping version, complete with tiger imitation. "Panama" is a concise masterclass in Morton's complex piano style, "King Porter Stomp" is given a rather frenetic reading which creates more excitement than the entire Benny Goodman orchestra, whilst for a change of pace the three chorus "Naked Dance" takes us back to the bordellos of Storyville.
Second, Morton's under-appreciated skill as a jazz singer is well illustrated here. "Lowdown Blues" is a splendid performance, with piano accompaniment based on his "New Orleans Blues"
Third, the sound quality is not brilliant, but is a vast improvement on previous LP issues.
Recommended to anyone interrsted in the history of
jazz.
The Original Jelly Roll.......1999-12-16
Wonderful. Jelly Roll's voice is awesome and so is his brillant playing. These are the roots of jazz, he also makes some comments about the songs too. Fairly clear recording, sound is a little scratchy, but very minimal, but it does not detract at all from the performances. Very moving. A must for anyone who is literate in jazz or who wants to be.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful collection of folk music.......2001-09-27
"The Music of Yi People in Yunnan, China" is a marvelous collection of instrumental folk music. According to the CD's liner notes, the Yi people are a relatively small ethnic group within China.
The CD contains music performed on a variety of traditional instruments: the shuye, a sort of flute made from a leaf; the yueqin, a four-stringed lute; the yanhe, a a small percussion instrument; the hoho, described as "a kind of Jew's harp" that is usually made out of brass; the tili, a wind instrument; and more. Some of the performances are solos on a single instrument, and some combine instruments.
It's hard to describe the rich variety of music on this CD. The songs range from playful to somber. These instruments have very unique sounds. The shuye is very high-pitched. The hoho has a "twangy," metallic sound that made me think it sounded like something out of science fiction. I especially liked tracks 8 and 9, which had a particularly elegant, lyrical quality.
The first time I listened to this CD, much of it was just too "different" for me to appreciate. But on repeated listenings, this wonderful ethnic music has really grown on me. If you're one of the people who was turned on to Chinese music by the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" soundtrack, check out the music of the Yi people.
