The Living Daylights was the first of the Timothy Dalton Bond portrayals but the last of the John Barry scores. Though the film marked the 25th anniversary of Bond's cinematic prowess, listeners can detect Barry's slumping enthusiasm for the '80s 007 incarnation. The assortment of recording artists accompanying Barry, such as a-ha and the Pretenders, may date the release, but the '80s synth pop sounds a bit refreshing in the face of today's heavier beats. Barry himself even uses several synthesized rhythm tracks. This disc includes almost a half hour of previously unreleased tracks of incidental music from the film, including a typically exciting Bond pre-credits teaser theme. --Joseph Lanza

From the Label
The Living Daylights was John Barry's eleventh complete score for the Bond series, and the instantly recognizable Bond/Barry sound was given a contemporary twist through the use of synthesized rhythm tracks. 5 out of 5 stars more great john barry.......2007-03-11

Great full orchestral bond score. john barry has a level of musical expertise that is matched only by john williams and jerry goldsmith.
I have this in my barry collection along with older band scores and the black hole, and somewhere in time. John barry never disappoints.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry is James Bond.......2006-07-30

Well, what can I add to these reviews already that hasn't been said? For me, John Barry will always be the real James Bond. The man who wrote the music for Goldfinger and defined that brassy and sexy music that for millions of fans will forever define the man with the license to kill. While OHMSS is probably his best 007 score, the Living Daylights sees Barry coming back with a vengeance in his last 007 film. With a fresh sound puncuated by combinations of synth and orchestra, Barry also writes one of his best love themes in Into Vienna and the song version by Pretenders. Notewothy also are the lyrics by Chrissie Hynde, of a high poetic quality ("...happy endings, never find me, I've put all my fantasies and hopes of love behind me. Saw my moments overdoomed, but if there was a man...").
I remember leaving the theatre in 1987 looking foward so much to Barry's next score for Bond. Has it been almost 20 years? I can't believe it. Thanks for the memories John, I'll always remain a fan.

5 out of 5 stars A New James Bond. The last of John Barry........2002-11-26

For his final time, the man who has created the music for many of the James Bond films, John Barry gives it all for his last, and one of the best soundtracks in the series! A-ha performs the title song, The Living Daylights and it was well recieved by fans, obviously because of the easy route given to them for the previous rock group, Duran Duran. John Barry then delivers some of his best work for the last time. Ice Chase, Hercules Takes Off and Final Confrontation are favorites because of their exciting upbeat tempo.
Another piece that adds to this glorious soundtrack is the additional songs If There Was A Man and Where Has Everybody Gone performed by The Pretenders. Since this CD was rereleased, there are several bonus tracks on here as well. John Barry makes his cameo (and only) appearance in the film The Living Daylights as the conductor of the symphony at the end of the film. John Barry has given us fabulous title songs by many respected artists and additional music that would make us flip! He is the true man that deserves all the credit for the music and this soundtracks is a perfect way to end his magnificent career! A 5 star soundtrack! Hats off to John Barry!

5 out of 5 stars Barry: The pentultimate Bond composer.......2002-08-14

When it comes to the wit, flair and style of a James Bond movie, nobody scores a better soundtrack than John Barry. The variety and flair in the entire soundtrack stuns listeners, recreating the action with the music.

I'm a firm believer that the music is an integral part of any movie and it can either make it or break it - with John Barry's scores, any film director is greatly assisted by such a talent. Ever since the creation of the ever-familiar Bond theme, Barry continues to delight, not only in these Bond scores, but in the other movie scores he produces (one such notable example being Mercury Rising).

It is without a doubt that Barry is one of the best, one of the elite soundtrack composers, a skill that is few and far between to get it correct - and Barry has it down pat. Excellent stuff, John, keep it up!

4 out of 5 stars Very good end to Barry's run as 007 composer.......2002-08-02

Listening to this CD makes me wish John Barry still composed music for the Bond series. There are bits and pieces of the music dated by the pop-synth rhythms used in some of the tracks, including the enjoyable makeover of the Bond theme heard in the exciting pre-credits sequence that introduced Timothy Dalton in the role of 007.

"Kara Meets Bond" and the "Mujahadin" tracks are awesome. David Arnold has made a fine successor to the Barry Bond Score mantle. But albums like "Living Daylights" prove that, as far as Barry is concerned, nobody does it better.
