Autumn In New York (2000 Film) [Soundtrack] [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Richard Gere is the aging romantic in love with the youthful Winona Ryder, except that while Gere is approaching the "autumn" of his life, Ryder's already there, suffering from a terminal disease. The heady situation has its grim moments, but the bittersweet mix of despair and euphoria is what much great art has always wrestled with. Here, it is presented sentimentally. The title track, arguably best performed by Lady Day, Billie Holiday, herself no stranger to life's troubles, is given a suitably smoky run-through by Yvonne Washington. Jennifer Page contributes "Beautiful," a lush pop ballad. But most of the soundtrack is handed over to the very capable Gabriel Yared, an Oscar Winner for his soundtrack to The English Patient. The Lebanese-born Yared draws on his own 25-plus years of scoring films to brilliantly build the drama to cathartic heights without sacrificing the quiet moments that match this romance with the season's explosion of color. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:
A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09
My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.
This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!
The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.
Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05
Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.
TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.
Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").
While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.
Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).
Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.
Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.
Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26
This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good but..........2003-06-10
Fans of Baker's string-saturated arrangements will like the tracks here that originally appeared on the 'Fifty Italian Strings' collection. However, these tracks are not remastered and have very limited sound (e.g., Chet's vocals are only audible from one speaker).
Another Year, Another Chet.......2000-12-30
Years after Chet Baker's death, good-quality CDs of his trumpet-playing and singing continue to turn up. One of the latest is this 17-song English offering from 1960 recording sessions in Italy. In addition to the title tune, the CD includes "Angel Eyes," "Street of Dreams," "Indian Summer," "Violets for Your Furs," "Goodbye" and "Deep in a Dream." The number of songs and the price ensure that you can't go wrong by adding this to your collection.

Customer Reviews:
Capitol collection of Jo Stafford singles from the 40s.......2007-04-08
I love Jo Stafford's voice and I was very happy I bought this two record cd. The only time I wasn't enthralled was when she sang in a genre I don't normally listen to. Leonard Feather wrote in "Inside Bop" that "The Gentleman Is A Dope" represents the influence of bop on mainstream singing by 1946. Listen to the opening chorus where Stafford scats. It sounds like she's singing with the clarinet.
Classic & Classy Jo.......2005-07-20
This is my favorite Jo Stafford CD! Every track here is a sophisticated number that showcases why she continues to impress listeners with her smooth voice. Her rendition of "Autumn in New York" makes me cry and feel sentimental every time, and I've never even set foot in New England!
Beautiful music - but this CD is now superfluous.......2002-10-03
I bought this before the Yes indeed! boxed set was released. Every song on this wonderful twofer can be found in that set, although I haven't checked to see if they are all the same versions. A previous reviewer suggests two of these tracks are missing from the box, so unless he has made a mistake, they must be different versions of the same songs.
Of the songs included here, romantic love songs make up most of this collection although there are a couple of western songs (Red river valley and Tumbling tumbleweeds) recorded with lush orchestral backings like the rest of this CD. All are sung superbly by Jo - but I can't ever remember hearing Jo do anything less. Smoke gets in your eyes and Some enchanted evening are just two of the famous songs here.
This is a magnificent collection, but if you buy Yes indeed! (at only a slightly higher price), you won't need it.
Buy the boxed set instead!.......2002-10-01
The *music* contained on this dual-album CD unquestionably deserves 5 stars. However, anyone reading this far would probably like to know that ALL BUT TWO TRACKS of this CD are included on the *Proper Box* 4-CD set -- "Yes Indeed" -- which costs about the same price as this single CD. So unless you're a "completist" or want the original album covers (which are reproduced in tiny size), there is currently no reason to buy this CD. I was eight years old when WW 2 ended and thru the prior years and many after, Jo Staffords music was always on the radio, I was so thrilled with this album, especially to realize that all the words came flooding back as if it were just yesterday. The song " NO OTHER LOVE" was my first real intro to classical music which is now among my favorites and as a young girl learned that song, was a piece by Chopin.
