This early '80s sword-and-steroids epic by writer/director John Milius is notable for making a bankable action-star of Arnold Schwarzenegger and cementing the reputation of film composer Basil Poledouris (Robocop, Hunt For Red October, Free Willy, Starship Troopers). A dream assignment for a young composer eager to showcase the range his skills, the lusty Conan score hearkens back to the '30s heyday of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's unabashed Euro-classicism, but with enough modern rhythmic and percussive flourishes to satisfy the modern listener. Buyer beware--this music is not intended for rush hour commute listening, and Amazon.com will not be held liable for the carnage such exposure might inspire. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Epic sonic landscapes.......2007-06-30

Aside from the fact that this soundtrack stands on its own as a phenomenal piece of fine art, there is another thing I'd like to add to all above reviews. The score has been written so masterfully that in effect it tells the whole story by itself. Every piece has been written by the composer to reflect current scene in its spirit and with finest storytelling qualities. I have listened to these tracks over and over, and the mind drifts automatically from scene to scene with no need for visuals. You just know which moment of the movie you are in, if you but seen it once. If you haven't, you can likely imagine the scenes, as the music is alive with epic landscapes, tonal adventures, and boundless emotion. This being said, The Anvil of Crom will surely become one of your all time favorites if orchestral scores on par with Flight of Valkyries is your thing.. I have read somewhere that the composer spent close to a year writing all tracks, and tried to make all musical elements closely resemble what people think of being 'medieval' and 'historical' sound. I know of few soundtracks which fit the screenplay so precisely, and it is the only soundtrack CD I have ever bought =)

5 out of 5 stars Conan the Barbarian..........2007-05-08

Among others, I miss Bail Poledouris also. "Conan the Barbarian" is an outstanding soundtrack. I also have the "Varese" edition, I bought it back in the 90's for $11.99.

My only complaint: If you remember the scene just before Conan kills the giant snake, he stumbles onto that jade copy of Thulsa Doom's "two snakes" symbol and freezes for a few seconds (just before the female sacrifice jumps in), that violin passage was the best part of the movie for me (it lasted maybe one minute!). I wish that violin solo was on the soundtrack, but, alas, no such luck!

Still, the soundtrack garners '5' stars from me...

5 out of 5 stars One of The All-Time Great Soundtracks.......2007-03-21

This soundtrack is phenomenal! From the very first cut, the main theme "Anvil of Crom," the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack hooks you with its huge martial sound of heavy percussion and blaring horns.

Basil Poledouris proved that he could capture the essence of the character, and set the moood of each scene, whether it required foreboding, mystery, romance, humor, and especially, combat.

Just as this movie launched Arnold Schwarzenegger as a major movie star, this soundtrack launched Basil Poledouris as a major league composer, conductor, and soundtrack creator. If you love rousing, thrilling, penetrating music, this is the soundtrack for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack.......2007-03-18

I love it from beginning to end. I like the soundtrack when I first saw the movie. My favorite part is the beginning. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Tis Good!.......2007-03-11

If you've seen the movie then you know the music, if you havn't seen the movie... then why the heck are you looking at the soundtrack??? All and all, if you just want good instrumental! Then Boom! There You Go!

This reissue originally released in 1997 was on the top American Billboard Charts, ranked number #13...dramantic in every respect "CINEMA CHORAL CLASSICS", featuring the CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS and their leader David Temple (Choir Master), world renown with a strong reputation for hitting the mark everytime...for additional listening pleasure THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC, conducted by Paul Bateman, Kenneth Alwyn and as always Nic Raine these gentleman are the icing on the cake...for additional listening pleasure we have the classical favorite "CARMINA BURANA"(1981-Carl Orff), the dark tale of Camelot...now that's just for openers.

Silva Screen Records takes us on a journey of adventure "CONAN:THE BARBARIAN"(1981-Basil Poledouris), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and resounding singers with brilliant orchestration...then we have two selections from "THE MISSION"(1986-Enno Morricone), beautiful choir blends emotion, enhanced by haunting themes and counter melodies..."THE LION IN WINTER"(1988-John Barry), a favorite among Barry fans, this arrangement and rendition has it all...next we travel with helmet in hand(with horns included) with "THE VIKINGS"(1959-Mario Nascimbene), if it's action you crave, then this Kirk Douglas epic is a real winner, but Nascimbene's score adds color and breaths life into this tale of the Viking God "Odin"...another remake leaps to the screen with "HENRY V"(1989-Patrick Doyle), one can only marvel at Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film, but the music from a solo to full choir gives you goose bumps...the CD is excellent, recorded in Dolby Surround sound is completely mesmerizing and outstanding...orchestration, every intstument, every voice, crystal clear...for all the "film-score-buffs", do not pass this one up...needs to be in your every growing collection (nuff said)...gotta love it!

Hats off to Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine conducting the world renown CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA...plus James Fitzpatrick(album producer)...Reynold da silva(executive producer)...and a special thanks to David Temple(Choir Master) and our favorite-dynamic choir that made all of this possible...THE CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

5 out of 5 stars The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best cd I have ever bought.......1999-10-27

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack.....However...........2006-12-19

It is damned sad how rare and highly expensive this CD has become. Buy the 12-track version? Screw that. I trip over piles of used Varese Sarabande CDs in local shops, and this one is rarer than ivory. Because of the CD's high price, I'm still playing my tape of this from 15 years ago.

Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest.

5 out of 5 stars I'm just a bit sad right about now..........2006-11-11

Basil Poledouris died on Wednesday? Wow. No more music from this phenominal composer. Conan the Barbarian is the one soundtrack that I just automatically pick out if I start thumbing through my CDs and I can't quite figure out what I want to listen to. It's just, well, always right. Powerful. Mournful. Hopeful. Playful. Soul-stirring. This soundtrack simply has everything anyone could want. I bought my first copy back in the mid 80's, and I wore it out. Yep, you can be as careful as you want, but nearly twenty years of playing a disc takes its toll. When I went to get another copy a couple of years ago, I discovered that they started at about fifty bucks, used, because they'd been out of print for so long. I don't think that I hesitated for more than about five seconds fore I bought the next one. Ahhhhh. Much better. The twelve songs on the Milan release (plus the intro by Mako) are nice (and cheaper), but the Varese Sarabande release, with the full 16 songs, was the one that I needed. Yes, needed. This is a fantastic piece of music that is, as I mentioned, Always Right.

5 out of 5 stars Rest in Peace Basil.......2006-11-11

The great Basil Poledouris passed away wednesday, 8 of november. Let's all hear the Conan soundtrack in silence and pray for one of the greatest composers of all time.
Thanks Basil, for the best songs of the XX century.
Rest in Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Differences between the Varese and Milan editions..........2006-03-08

Basil Poledouris' score to Conan the Barbarian is one of the great powerhouses of film music and remains as one of my favorite film scores to this date.

The score is a perfect blend of melodic beauty and raw power with a huge orchestral sound and lots of wonderful choral passages that range from haunting and slow to in-your-face and over-the-top. I could go on forever on this score, but suffice it to say that I really can't think of a more perfect score than this.

As for the CD's sound quality...

The sound quality is definitely dated and isn't quite as crisp and clean as one would hope. However, what it lacks in sound quality, it more than makes up for in musical quality. I've purchased a number of albums containing re-recordings of Conan music and while the sound quality has been better, NOTHING has matched the emotion and power of the original film soundtrack.

Differences between the editions...

The 12-track Milan edition was released first, followed later by an expanded 16-track edition by Varese Sarabande.

The Milan CD runs around 49 minutes, while the Varese edition runs about 67 minutes. The Varese edition includes pretty much all the same music as the Milan release, with one exception:
The first track of the Milan edition opens up with Mako's opening prologue speech which then immediately segues into the "Anvil of Crom" opening. The Varese track opens up directly with "Anvil of Crom".

The Varese edition adds the following four tracks:
- Mountain of Power Procession (3:21)
- The Tree of Woe (3:31)
- Recovery (2:11)
- Death of Rexor (5:34)

and expands the following two tracks:
- The Leaving/The Search (5:59)
- The Kitchen/The Orgy (6:30)

Compared to the original Milan tracks:
- The Search (3:09)
- The Orgy (4:14)

All in all, the Milan edition is missing about 19 minutes worth of music.

In my opinion, the Varese edition is definitely worth seeking out, but even if you decide to get the 12-track Milan edition, the music is worth getting in whatever form you can.

For any fan of film music and for any fan of the film, this score is definitely a must have!

However, if you're an audiophile, you may want to think twice.

NOTE: I noticed that Amazon lists the Milan edition twice and the Varese edition once... yet the reviews for both the Varese and one of the Milan editions appear on both pages, so beware of which page you are looking at, especially if you are ordering the title.

You can easily tell which edition it is by checking the Label information under "Product Details" or simply looking at the cover image: The Varese cover has a black area on the right side of the containing the title and credits, while the Milan edition has the Conan cover image centered in a box with the title centered at the top.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Soundtrack.......2006-01-26

This is a really great soundtrack, one of the best movie soundtracks I have ever heard. It put Basil Poledouris on the map as one of the greatest composers in history, in my mind at least.

I was surprised to see that the price has gone up so much on this soundtrack now that it is not available new, but I guess it is not all that surprising considering the high quality of the music. I don't really have much to offer on a review here beyond what other people have said, but here's a few thoughts anyway.

Having seen the movie many times, it is very easy to visualize it along the way as you listen to the soundtrack. It makes the soundtrack all the more exciting.

1. Anvil of Crom
2. Riddle of Steel / Riders of Doom

Corny as it sounds, you can feel the rush of battle in the heart-pounding main theme.

3. Gift of Fury

Then there's the pain of Conan's loss of his mother. (And a hot mom she was, I must say.)

4. Wheel of Pain
5. Atlantean Sword

Conan grows up as a slave and discovers his freedom.

6. Theology/Civilization

The movie finally turns in a less-dark direction and the future looks less bleak as Conan gains his first true friend: Subotai.

7. Wifeing
8. The Leaving/The Search

Conan finds love with Valeria, but even that cannot quench his thirst for revenge. He ultimately chooses revenge over love.

9. Mountain of Power Procession

Three Words: James Earl Jones. 'Nuff said.

10. The Tree of Woe
11. Recovery

Excellent tracks with great background vocals as Conan is crucified and returns to life. Except unlike Jesus, Conan comes back ready to kick some ___.

12. The Kitchen/The Orgy
13. Funeral Pyre

Valeria's untimely demise.

14. Battle of the Mounds
15. Death of Rexor

Finally it all comes to a head in the last battle. Conan's prayer is the absolute best. It is truly a classic.

16. Orphans of Doom/The Awakening

The end of an awesome story, a true saga.

I notice one discrepancy and it is found in the liner notes. It refers to the last track as "Orphans of the Storm", while the back of the CD clearly says "Orphans of Doom." So I'm not sure which title is canon (not that it matters). In any case, both titles sound cool.

This is a long CD with lots of good music. It does cover the vast majority of the movie. Still, I am slightly disappointed in one thing. In the movie, there was very interesting background music in the scene where Conan fights the giant snake. That music is missing from the CD. This is a minor thing, to be sure, but I hope that someday we can get a soundtrack that has it all. Unfortunately, that's not very likely.

If you like this CD, then I also recommend the soundtrack CD to the kinder, gentler sequel "Conan the Destroyer" as a companion piece. But nothing beats the original.

WONDERFUL!My all time favorite is Sherlock Holmes.Well Done!!

4 out of 5 stars Good entertainment value.......2004-03-21

This collection, aside from the first two recordings of Welles and Rathbone, assembles the radio series of Sherlock Holmes as it was after 1945. The sequence of actors portraying Holmes is Tom Conway ('46-'47, 14 recs), John Stanley ('47-'48, 11 recs), John Gielgud ('55, 9 recs) and Carleton Hobbs ('60s, 3 recs). This comes to 20 hours of plays on 20 CDs. The power of radio plays is less in Kilowatts than it the ability of its performers to pull you inside the story by the force of their voice alone. For those who are used to a fuller presentation on film, this is a unique opportunity to judge these players from a single dimension, their vocal tones and inflexions. I thought Gielgud did the best job, although Tom Conway was a close second. I guess theatrical background is a big help to reaching this kind of a talent. As the booklet mentions, Tom Conway's voice and Rathbone's were very close. See if you can tell the difference.

4 out of 5 stars The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09

You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)

5 out of 5 stars nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15

As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.

The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05

If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.

Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.

A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.

5 out of 5 stars "successful formula from Silva spells Classic all the way".......2002-09-24

History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.

What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.

But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.

With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars I doubt anyone will ever read this.......2006-07-11

So I'll make it brief. This is a hidden gem of the late 90's, and it contains the Holy Grail: Dead Man Walking. David Bowies acoustic version of a techno experiment is quite possibly the most chillingly beautiful song ever written by the Glam God of Rock and Roll. In addition "Do Ya" is awesome as is Edwyn Collin's "Girl Like You". Mostly every track is enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful live performances!.......2005-03-18

This album has a ecletic collection of live performances from a wide variety of bands that were popular in the late 90's. Seems like such a long time ago already!
The two performances that were lacking though were, 1. Cake. Not that they were bad but there was some sort of technical problem that set their sound "off". And 2. an unusual song by that annoying band from "there's something about Mary" Maybe I just didn't care for the sound of his vocals.
But otherwise a great live album with humor and dignity! David Bowies song was a masterpiece of professionalism.

4 out of 5 stars Let's Go Into The Late Night Darkness.......2001-02-19

Conan pretty much took up where Letterman left off at NBC: cutting edge comedy and under-the-radar musical acts that don't get a lot of TV time elsewhere. So, for nearly 20 years now, Late Night has "introduced" a lot of acts to a national TV audience. The artists on this compilation aren't nearly as obscure as some of the acts you'll see on a nightly basis on Conan, but it's a pretty interesting mix. From well-respected stars (Bowie and Costello) to indie acts with loyal followings (Sweet, DiFranco, Richman, Soul Coughing, SNZ) to artists who've had a modern rock hit or two in the 90s (Bjork, Cake, Jamiroquai, Edwyn Collins, 311). The highlights for me include Bowie's acoustic version of his "Dead Man Walking," Matthew Sweet's torrid soundcheck cover of The Move's "Do Ya," Costello's exquisite "All This Useless Beauty," Cake's driving "The Distance," and Jonathan Richman's slinky smooth "Let Her Go Into The Darkness." I'm not a fan of Jamiroquai or 311 (maybe you do) but they don't take away from the CD at all. Besides, it's hard to like EVERY band on compilations like this. It's still a great collection.

    5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2000-06-20

Late Night is the best show on the air ever. I have been a hooked from the start. I think they need a new one. This one is geting old. The new one needs tracks from Conan and Andy and some tracks from Max (If they can put him in.) The CD is not that funny. The next CD needs D.O.P and C.P.W. The two best band I have seen on the show. It just so hapend the one was made up for a skit in a joke, making fun of ABCs Making The Band and the other was in the AT&T find the best band. It would be good in the next CD had the performer interv. Its good 311 and Cake are great on the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Artists, Great Variety.......2000-01-14

I had a hard time finding this CD, but now that I finally have it I've gotta tell you that it is GREAT. There are several superb artists giving fresh performances (David Bowie, Bjork, Elvis Costello, Cake) along with some really humorous lyrics in "Let Her Go into the Darkness" by Jonathan Richman. Bottom line: Even if you're not a big fan of "Late Night," I think you'll really enjoy "Live From 6A."
