I give this CD five stars because the sound quality is excellent, but try to get "The Original Tuxedo Junction" on RCA instead because it includes twenty-one tracks, all of those on this disc are included on that one. These two CD's are out of print, but can be found used on Amazon, and other online sources.

This music sounds just as good today as it as it did when I first heard it in the 60's. My mother had a collection of old records and this was my favorite. I love Tuxedo Junction , After Hours but my absolute favorite is Tippin In. Anyone looking to explore the music of the 40's should take a listen and I'm sure you'll be happy you did.

Until this CD, "Erskine Hawkins" had been for me only a name mentioned in passing by jazz historians or printed on any number of stock arrangements of "Tuxedo Junction" (Hawkins composition). This album should set the record straight. It captures the highly crafted yet irresistably dramatic style of Hawkins, a trumpet player who evokes more than anyone the Louis Armstrong of the late 20s. Also, it gives meaning to the name of the composer always mentioned in conjunction with "After Hours." Avery Parrish, whose career was ended by a bar fight when he was in his mid-20s, was indeed a pianist of both feeling and finesse, and it's doubtful any of the subsequent interpretations of his trademark song surpass the original version.

The audio quality of this collection is better than one might expect--more "present," in fact, than many of the Goodman and Miller recordings from the same period. More importantly, the band outswings either of the aforementioned celebrated ensembles. Erskine eschews both the plodding bass drum thump of the Goodman/Krupa recordings and the heavy, dead-weight orchestrations of the Miller band. Believe me, after hearing this original version of "Tuxedo Junction," you won't be able to return to the Glenn Miller dilution.

This CD should be part of any serious jazz collection unless you already have the vinyl edition. For a nice contrast, also buy the CD by vocalist Asa Harris, niece of Erskine Hawkins. She includes Tuxedo Junction, written by Erskine.

Beautiful, introspective songs. A shame it wasn't heard more widely. Gorgeous voice ... especially on my favourite "Wild Blue Heart". Take a chance and pick it up if you can ... it just keeps growing on you.

    Thank you Amazon for this CD. I remember when the track Chattanooga Choo Choo was released back in 1978 and was a hit single out here and I bought the luminous yellow vinyl album.I Wasnt even aware that it had been released on CD until I did such on Amazon. I absolutely adore and must give credit to the producers for the loving way they have eased these 1940's era tracks into the disco style. The CD came as an absolute surprise as it also included the second album by Tuxedo Junction which I wasnt even aware of...and its standout tracks such as Begin the Beguine, Gotta be football hero etc.Its joyful uplifting and classy disco. Put on your white tie and dance.

    A friend of mine who likes everything about 1940s (music, movies, style, fashion, etc.) introduced me to the music of Tuxedo Junction about six years ago. He bought one of the earliest albums the group recorded way back in the seventies. When I heard their version of my all-time favorite, Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade," I knew I was going to like this group. Their rendition is very unique and matchless. If you love great standards particularly in the Swing Era, then this is the CD to listen to or even to dance to Swing, Hustle and Fox Trot.

    The most popular tracks aside from "Moonlight Serenade" are "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Tuxedo Junction." "Take The 'A' Train," "That Old Black Magic," "Begin The Beguine," "Fox Trot" and "Rainy Night In Rio." Special mentions are my top favorites, Hoagy Carmichael/Mitchell Parish composition "Stardust" and Duke Ellington/Bob Russell's "I Didn't Know About You." These two timeless songs were rendered so beautifully that I could listen to these tracks repeatedly.

    This is one CD that collectors would be glad to have in their music libraries.

      This Swiss 1989 Tuxedo reissue of a plausible, and forgotten, Vox Records production from 1964 unearths a youthful Walter Klien performance, a rare treat indeed, worthy of twofold excitement and glee, especially for those of us who have followed this pianist without knowing of or hearing his take on these ingratiating Smetana polkas, including the composer's most romantic, introspective works (Opp. 7, 8 and 12). Delightfully, Klien's way with Smetana is organic and luminous, simultaneously; his interplay between idiom and irresistible individuality endows these amiable dances with a captivating inescapable Slavic melancholy that, in tandem with a curious self-assurance, incurs the palpable spirit of Chopin. No mean feat, this. Interpretations such as Klien's belie the notion that these pieces are merely inconsequential fluff. It's quite the contrary rather, which makes it all the more inconceivable that the polkas are so infrequently recorded. Fittingly, and providentially, Klien now joins the meager ranks of fellow pianists dipping into arcane Smetana.

      I was thrilled to finally be able to replace my old (nearly worn out) copy of this recording.These are the most intense renderings of the pieces that I have ever heard.

      The LP was an early acquisition for me. I am replacing my most played LP with this CD.

      I was impressed by the treatment of each piece. The 1812 Overture was, by far, the best of the lot. I have heard other orchestras and other conductors do this, but, this one is a standout.

      The one incongruous piece was the Polovtsian Dances. The other three were classical classic, and this one was a combination of swing and classical. Still, enjoyable.

      The Russian Easter Overture was excellent. If you think about what it was trying to communicate, you get it.

      Night on Bald Mountain on this record has only been bested by the Disney Fantasia treatment of it. This one was impressive, but the Disney version was inspiring, and brought tears to my eyes. On the Disney version, Stokowski did this by changing the last movement to Ave Maria. On this version, Hollreiser keeps to the Moussorgsky score for then ending.

      Ah, the OLD Disney movies. That was stuff to appeal to values.

      This recording is well worth any money they ask for it

      This cd is incredible. All I have to say is that if you like Glen Miller or traditional big band music you will like this cd. This cd has some of the best recordings of the Glenn Miller Orchestra I have ever heard. There is another collection out that has three cds by Blue Bird but this cd's recordings are far superior in quaulity to the previously mentioned. This is a must buy for any Glen Miller fan.
