Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just as I Remember.......2006-06-14

In college (close to 40 years ago) the last thing I did most nights was put my Danny Boy and Other Songs I Love to Sing Andy Williams album on the record player. I was thrilled to finally find this album on CD and am delighted with the quality. The songs and Andy's voice are soothing, gentle and lovely - just as I remember.

5 out of 5 stars First two Columbia albums.......2005-01-13

After some earlier successes, Andy Williams joined Columbia in 1962 and recorded two albums for them that year - Danny Boy and Moon River, helped to set his career going in the direction he wanted it.

Danny Boy has no particular theme but features an excellent collection of ballads delivered in a warm, easy listening style that became his trademark. As far as I know, there are no original songs here, but Andy was content to fill his albums with covers of established songs. Some of the songs are internationally famous, the most famous of all being Danny Boy, The twelfth of never, Secret love, Summertime and Misty, though Misty is performed a romantic ballad. If you only know the up-tempo cover by Ray Stevens, Andy's version will come as something of a shock to you, but it is the way the composers intended it to be sung.

There are also some delightful but obscure songs from the Lerner-Loewe songbook (Come to me bend to me, The heather on the hill) as well as fine covers of Tammy. I'm old-fashioned, Can I forget you, It could happen to you and I want to be wanted.

Andy's second Columbia album, Moon River, brought together a collection of movie themes and made the top three in the American album charts. Curiously, the title track was never released as a single although it became his signature song. (In the UK, the song became a number one hit for Danny Williams - no relation).

Apart from the title track, the album contains Andy's excellent interpretations of such classics as A summer place, Maria, Never on Sunday, As time goes by, It might as well be spring, Three coins in the fountain and others.

With these two albums, Andy left nobody in any doubt that he was a ballad singer with no interest in recording up-tempo songs. That he was able to build a career as a balladeer despite changing musical fashions is a measure of the man's talent.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from imports..........2004-01-04

I have been an Andy Williams fan since he came on the scene. I own many of his original phonograph albums. This CD does not hold a candle to any of them. The richness of Andy's voice is just not there, not to mention the quality/volume of the background music. I have found this to be true with other "import" CDs, i.e., Ricky Nelson's, etc. Sadly, anyone who gives this item more than one star has not heard Andy Williams at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2001-12-15

Both of these albums are excellent! They were, I believe, Andy's first two albums for Columbia. The artistry, control, and the range of the vocals is unmatched by most singers of his era or even today. You'll love these albums!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mellow and Heartwarming.......2001-12-06

This is without a doubt my favorite Andy Williams CD. If your in a mellow mood or just need to mellow out, there is no better collection. Andy is in incredible voice, holding notes and changing octives effortlessly without ever taking a breath. What a great singer! Even today he is still in good voice. I've seen him several times in Branson and he never fails to amazes me with his vocal abilities.
