This sunny stop-motion cousin to director Henry Selick's Nightmare Before Christmas was treated more like the proverbial red-headed stepchild upon its 1996 release, and that's a shame. Aside from its bountiful visual recounting of Roald Dahl's inventive children's story, it contains one of Randy Newman's best musical scores, an orchestral delight whose dynamics sometimes contrast dramatically with the manic energy his other Disney animation scores. Those familiar with his body of songwriting won't be disappointed at the rich emotional landscape he covers here, from delicate wonder and heartrending wistfulness to adventures both harrowing and rewarding. True to the story's Anglo roots, Newman's songs playfully evoke some English music hall and a little Gilbert & Sullivan, while he whips the self-performed finale, "Good News," into a full Southern gospel romp. Newman's expressed unusual pride and fondness for this work, and for good reason; it's good to have it available once again. --Jerry McCulley

What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Feel Good Soundtrack to Feel Good Film.......2007-07-13
Saw a sneak preview last night of the film and it was fun! Did not have high expectations after seeing Hairspray on Broadway and again on a touring show but it was great. I like Nikki Blonsky's Tracy over Marissa Winokur's Tracy. This soundtrack as additional songs and sounds better than the orginal Broadway cast. Only wish Cooties was in the movie, hopefully it will be on the DVD version whenever. Glad it made it on the CD. See the movie, buy the soundtrack. John Travolta was OK as Edna, better than I expected but sometimes his voice reminded me of Mike Myers's Dr. Evil somehow. His dancing in "fat" costume was funny.

I got this cd the day it came out! I got the last one! I put it in as soon as i got home, and now take it everywere in my cd player! If you like show, or dance music, by this! There are also VERY good dance songs on this!

Great Soundtrack, and it doesn't have to be the Broadway Cast.......2007-07-12
Most of these reviews go on about either this recording or the original Broadway Cast are better. Well I think they are missing the point. The Broadway Cast with Marissa Jaret Winokur and Harvey Fierstein was fantastic and special because it was the first time many of us heard most of these songs. It did a great job of transferring the vitality of the live production to the recording and is one of my favorites for that very reason, but the Motion Picture recording takes those same songs and tweaks them so that they work on the screen and give us something changed and just as wonderous. They are just different and I love them both. And isn't that the point of "Hairspray"? That we should allow people (and performers and possible soundtrack albums) to be different and still appreciate their special qualities and individuality?
Nikki Blonsky, Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, James Marsden and the rest of the cast do a spectacular job making a Motion Picture Soundtrack of the Musical "Hairspray" (I just wish John Travolta had more to sing and "yes" it would have been a blast to have heard this cast do "The Big Doll House", but I'm not sure I would have been willing to exchange it for "Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)"). The new songs and arrangements of the retained songs hit the same high quality as the Broadway recording achieved.
While I would have loved to have seen a video recording with the original cast, it just didn't happen (unless you YouTube it), but you cannot really complain about this cast and production team, because they really are all on the top of their games.
So quit your bitchin' and "Viva la difference!"
Hair-Hoppers Rejoice!!!.......2007-07-12
Yet again, John Waters' raucous love letter to Baltimore, big gals, and bouffants has reinvented itself marvelously. The film version of the Broadway version of the 1988 film is as much fun as any earlier incarnation, and the Soundtrack is a non-stop feel-good party that keeps the beat going. Newcomer Nikki Blonsky is as big a breakout star as Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls, although Hairspray's a much better film. John Travolta sounds adorable as Edna Turnblad, although he's no match for Harvey Fierstein. There are so many great danceable songs on the Hairspray soundtrack, you'll have to keep yourself from jumping up out of your seat (especially if you're driving!). The Nicest Kids in Town, Ladies Choice and You Can't Stop the Beat are especially great. Queen Latifah sounds amazing in her songs Big Blonde and Beautiful and the stirring I Know Where I've Been. The biggest surprise is sultry and smashing Michelle Pfeiffer tearing into Miss Baltimore Crabs. I could go on, but just know that you won't find a single dud song on the CD, particularly after you see the terrific movie! I'm sorry "Cooties" got cut from the film, but I love the dance version at the end of the CD.
Nearly As Good As The Original.......2007-07-12
There will probaby be nothing that completely beats the original cast recording of Hairspray in my heart. This recording, however, makes a brand new place in my heart, and although there are a few small bad spots, this is a uniformly excellent cast.
To start with, the cast is, for the most part, excellently chosen. Nicole Blonksy sets a new standard for the part of Tracy Turnblad, with her powerful, clear, emotional vocals. Equally, the rest of the cast keep up the standard of excellence their predecessors left for them. Of special mention are Michelle Pfiefer, who does an excellent turn as the rich, snobbish Velma Turnblad, and delivers a delightful "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs"; Christopher Walken, who shows us the same jazzy voice we saw briefly in CLICK; and Amanda Bynes. While she's no Kerry Butler, and her vocals on "Without Love" are a bit weak in a couple of places(supposedly the director told her to hold back on this song as her character was "just finding her voice") she proves that she does have a fairly powerful sultry voice. John Travolta, however, never quite escapes the shadow of Harvey Fierstien. His performance is interesting, and people will either hate him, or love him. The only time he really manages to escape Harvey's shadow is during "Welcome To The 60's" when he gets some fun ad-lib like stuff.
If you liked the music from the show, you'll probably like this, and if you hated it, you'll probably hate it. Many of the songs have been rearranged but all of the new arrangements are welcome. In particular, a saxaphone added to the poignant "I Know Where I Been" adds even more spine tingle to the song, and some extra instruments during the opening of "You're Timeless To Me" give it an old time big band feel. Of the three songs cut, "The Big Dollhouse" is probably the most sorely missed, and leaves one wondering why they changed to plot in a way that eliminated this song. "Cooties", while it is a dispensible song, was the only chance that the character of Amber (played by a wonderful Brittany Snow), and her new song "The New Girl In Town" features her alone in a total of three short lines and doesn't give Brittany Snow the chance she should have had to shine. The song itself is also somewhat blah in comparison with the rest of the score. The final cut song, "Mama I'm A Big Girl Now" is also missed, but it's absence fromt he movie is more than made up by it's presentation on this soundtrack. It's sung by all three women who've played Tracy, Ricki Lake, Marisa Janet Winkour, and Nicole Blonsky, and even contains a "little" suprise near the end for fans of the original broadway cast. There are two other new songs, and luckily neither of them is as dispensible as "New Girl...". "Ladies Choice" is a high energy 50's rock dance number sung by a very good Zac Efron, and "We Come So Far" is the requisite credits song, and a certifiable toe tapper that is every bit as good as the best songs from the main plot.
In the end, this shows, similar to "Dreamgirls" but not with quite the same success, how a musical can make a good transition to screen without having to keep the original actors. This makes a good companion to the original album, or a good introduction to the musical. Personally, I suggest you get both cast recordings, but if you can't here's a good bit of advice. If you're looking for a bit of a popier sound, go for this one, if you're looking for a bit more of a 50's sound, and Harvey Fierstien, go for the orignal cast. Either way, you'll get a souveneir of a fun, dazzling show.

Young James Morrison has "success story" written all over him. Drawing influence from soul greats like Cat Stevens, Otis Redding, and Van Morrison, debut album Undiscovered reveals this Rugby-born vocalist has the sort of world-weary voice and songwriting chops to take the Later...With Jools Holland path to mainstream success that's formerly made stars of Damien Rice, James Blunt, and former tour-mate Corinne Bailey Rae. In keeping with his soul influences, much of Undiscovered has a full, warm multi-instrumental sound neatly rendered by Martin Terefe, producer for the likes of KT Tunstall and Ron Sexsmith. "Under the Influence", a passionate upfront love song, is borne along on florid piano and Beatles-esque string arrangements, while the tear-stained "Wonderful World" matches its emotional message ("I know that it's a wonderful world/But I can't feel it right now") with optimistic brass and cascading percussion. Album stand-outs come with "You Give Me Something" and the closing "Better Man", a solo acoustic number that really showcases the range of Morrison's voice. Purists may still baulk at the prospect of a white lad from the North of England singing soul, but the sure success of Undiscovered ought to prove that a strong voice will always be the bottom line. --Louis Pattison

James Morrison's vocals and songwriting style may seem really familiar, but the more I think about it, the less I can think of someone to compare him to. There are R&B and soul influences here, but nothing so strong that you could compare him to any one artist or any one sound. His vocal style is simply one of a kind, and each track on this album could be a hit pop song. I was really impressed with this debut.
Great Back to Basics Music.......2007-07-03
After seeing the video "You Give Me Something" I bought the CD "Undiscovered" to hear what other tunes James put together. I was pleasantly surprised and really liked what I heard. My favorite songs are "You Give Me Something", "Under The Influence", and "Call The Police". This is a great CD, and I definitely recommend buying it.

A NATURAL SURPRISE!.......2007-06-10
I happened upon James Morrison's video on VH1 and just before I was about to change the channel because "Oh here we go again..another soulful skinny white guy moaning into the camera" but I stopped. It was the timbre of his voice and the fact that I IMMEDIATELY started humming along. I watched the video to the end and then wrote down his name. With much tepidation (one cut and I know it will be trash) I bought it. I was absolutely and pleasantly surprised that I loved every single one of the songs on this cd. Mr. Morrision is talented and his music comes from his soul. I'm glad he's only in his twenties because that means we've got a lifetime to hear his music. You cannot put a price on a CD that exceeds your expectations and that you can't put down for a loooonnnggg time. I have yet to open up my other purchases because I keep allowing his CD to continue to play and I'm still not tired of it yet. Great artist, great purchase and I look forward to hearing more.
An amazing new talent discovered.......2007-06-07
I've played this CD non-stop since I purchased it last night; by far this is the best CD I've heard to date. This CD should be nominated for next year's 2008 Grammy Awards for best album and best new artist. Please be sure to read his album notes because his inspiration is Steve Wonder, Al Green and Otis Redding and you can definitely hear it in this album. I can't wait for his next CD!!

Beverly Sills hardly needs an introduction. She sang on the radio as a child and on the operatic stage as a teenager; her meteoric international career was launched by appearances in several virtually unknown bel canto operas at the New York City Opera. This compilation of arias and ensembles from some of her signature roles, recorded in the 1970s, with splendid partners like Nicolai Gedda, Alfredo Kraus, and Sherrill Milnes, displays her unique vocal and dramatic artistry at its peak. Her voice, effortlessly produced over an enormous range, is bright, pure, infinitely variable in color, inflection and intensity. Her intonation is impeccable even in huge leaps, and her breath is endless. The coloratura roulades are like strings of perfect, luminous pearls, clearly articulated in seamless legato. But this stunning technique (whose only flaw is a sometimes wide, wobbly vibrato) is never used for show; every note has life and expression, serving the music and the dramatic situation. Indeed, her characters are flesh-and-blood human beings, whose thoughts, emotions and interactions, from inwardness to ecstasy, from lamentation to overflowing joy, she projects with riveting concentration. Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville is a charming, mischievous minx who succumbs to delighted tenderness; Pamira's great scene from his Siege of Corinth shows clearly why her Metropolitan Opera debut in that role was a sensation. In Verdi's Rigoletto, Gilda's hopeful innocence turns into hopeless despair: she dies, palpably, on a floating, celestial pianissimo. In his La traviata, Violetta's initial cool, hesitant restraint gradually melts as she opens herself (and her voice) to Alfredo's ardor and the bliss of love. The vocal balance in their final duet is uncanny; its tremulous tenderness in the shadow of death breaks the heart, as does her duet with Germont. Massenet's Thais is sensuous; Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Lehár's The Merry Widow provide comic relief. --Edith Eisler

Adio del Passato is incredible! Beverly's high, floating coloratura is no less than ethereal which takes you to another world. Her voice has given me so much joy that it is hard to say one recording is better than another because I love her Mozart album equally with her Bellini/Donizetti. It is so wonderful to have these recordings captured on CD! Enjoy!

THIS CD WAS THE BEST OPERA CD ISSUED LAST YEAR, AND HAS CAUGHT THE WORLD'S EAR IN NO TIME. I WAS BUSY WRITING IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL, WHILE THE STATEOWNED FM RADIOSTATION, DEDICATED TO CULTURE, WAS SOFTLY PLAYING OPERA ARIAS IN THE BACKGROUND. EMI Does It Again: Beverly Sills - A Tribute.......2005-07-22
EMI's "Very Best Of" series are perfect introductions to operatic singers of the 20th century. Once you hear these artist tribute albums (much like The Singers series) you will get hooked on the singer and seek out their full-length studio recordings. Beverly Sills was the first truly famous American opera star. One may argue that she was not, that she was merely a continued tradition of American divas such as Mary Garden and Lily Pons and which still continues today with Renee Fleming, Elizabeth Futral and Susan Graham. Beverly was raised in New York City, which is still her home, and which is the home of the New York City Opera and the Met, opera houses which rocketed her to fame. Her first success (not featured in this recording...UH WHY ?) was Cleopatra of Handel's Julius Caesar, a performance she sang opposite the illustrious baritone Norman Treigle. Those performances were legendary because coincidentally at the same time the Met was opening its new theatre and season with what became a disastrous Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra starring Leontyne Price in an overblown, big-budget, epic fiasco. The great roles that followed the 1965 Cleopatra were Manon, Queen Elizabeth I in Roberto Deveraux, Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti Tudor Queen operas, Pamira in The Siege of Corinth (which were Sill's La Scala and belated Met debut. None of the Queens are featured in this recording, though its supposedly the Very Best Of. An aria from Rossini's Siege of Corinth is featured here however. What we are treated to however are fine lyric roles- Beverly Sills shone brightly and acted convincingly as Gilda in Rigoletto (the final scene is featured here) as Violetta in La Traviata, Thais, The Merry Widow (the beautiful Vilja is featured here)and the ingenue role of Norina in Don Pasquale is also showcased here. To each of these roles, Beverly Sills delivered an authenticity and dramatic interpretation, not ot mention beautiful, sweet tone. I love her pianissimos, her high notes, her chest register. It was the voice of Beverly Sills who first hooked me into opera. For a recording that should showcase her best work, Manon is not featured nor any of her prized French heroines- Marie in The Daughter of the Regiment and the heroines in Tales of Hoffman. Also not in here is the role that was her first success- the Broadway opera Ballad of Baby Doe. Even as such, the arias here are gorgeous. The Barber of Seville is in here and as Rosina she is playful and charming. Sills was a modern singer, with a voice that was beautiful but willing to sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic content. When Sills was once asked what she thought of the supposed rivalry with Joan Sutherland (which was never real and only gossip from partisan fans) Beverly said something to this effect -Joan and I are apples and oranges in our take on opera, we are Picasso and Monet. She would do anything for the effect of beauty and tone, I'd sacrifice beauty for the sake of dramatic text. Even as such, I see no ugliness to any of the roles here. All of them are beautiful to hear, full of rich floating celestial tones. It would have been nice to hear the roles that did call for Sills to step up the tense drama - Norma, will her recording ever be reissued by EMI ? Also, few people know that Beverly Sills sung role most would consider dangerous for her voice (though she sang them long before her career even took off)- Aida and Carmen!!
Glad To Be The First Review- Beverly Sills Treasury Of Arias.......2005-04-29
At last EMI's "The Very Best Of" series has issued some of the finer recorded documented arias of the incomparable soprano Beverly Sills. Fans of this down-to-earth, warm patron of music and the most unique lyric-coloratura-dramatic soprano, will be in Heaven. Sure, this is only some of the arias in only a small number of the many operas Sills performed. To be truthful, this is not what I'd personally regard as the best of Beverly Sills. Other albums of hers do use greater vocal masterpieces she sang- the best being "The Singers" Series, and another EMI edition called The Art of Beverly Sills Volume 2 and then there's the rare and brilliant "Sillsiana". Nevertheless, this album has its charm and appeal. Beverly Sills sings arias from Rossini's Barber of Seville, Verdi's Rigoletto and Traviata. This recording seems to highlight mostly her mastership of the bel canto repertoire and Verdi. Gilda and Violetta were roles she sang with supreme dramatic integrity and sweetness and purity of vocal line. Yet, it is hardly "the best of". Where are scenes from the masterful interpretations of Donizetti, truly Sills strongest suit- Lucia Di Lammermoor, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereaux, where is Sills' Manon, which even she hails as her best ? And when will her recorded Norma ever see the light of day ? Sills also excelled in the French repertoire- Faust, Thais, La Fille Du Regiment, The Tales of Hoffman and she was an incredible Queen Shemakha in Korsakov's Coq D'Or. True, Sills had a light, girlish, delicate voice, bright and small, but this worked in her favor in tragic roles. Dramatically, she could get into character as passionately and convincingly as Maria Callas. When she could darken her voice and use her chest voice for dramatic effect it was often thrilling. This is the latest recording in a number of recordings that are coming out, further promoting a great singer of the past. Beverly Sills. She was the working man's soprano. She worked hard to get to the top. She was the reigning singer of the NYC Opera where she starred in such great operas as Handel's Giulio Ceare Sills as Cleopatra (also not on this recording) and Tales of Hoffman singing opposite the great but underrated bass Norman Treigle. Sills is a wonderful human being and she has a beautiful voice that I cannot get out of my mind. She will always be the greatest to me. She got me hooked into opera.

Cars is a typical Disney-Pixar animated movie in that it deals with an anthropomorphic character (here, a car) and the heartwarming values of family and friendship. (Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's boisterous, huge-sounding "Real Gone" (her best song in ages). Rascal Flatts also cover Tom Cochrane's 1991 hit "Life Is a Highway," while John Mayer rocks out on "Route 66" (Chuck Berry's elegantly lean version is included as well). For his part, Newman continues his distinguished association with quality animation by supplying a nimble score. It's fun to hear him deploy riffs that wouldn't be out of place on a Quiet Riot album on the bombastic "Opening Race," while the bluesy "Bessie" does George Thorogood with a tuba. The CD's overall Southern flavor is emphasized by the frequent use of banjo and slide guitar, as well as by score tracks cantering about, like "McQueen and Sally." And, as usual, Newman delivers a nostalgic, misty-eyed song--in this case "Our Town," performed by that master of sensitive laid-back charm, James Taylor. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Great movie soundtrack cd. Lots of good songs and music; if you've seen the movie, you can almost see the action going on with the different orchestral pieces. The kids love the songs. We've only had the cd a couple of weeks but the kids are already singing along with the songs; the kids are 2 and 5.

I love this CD as much as my boys do. It is so upbeat and fun! We listen to this in the car all the time and the boys love to tell me what scene is happening with each different song. They even like listening to the back half of the CD and describing each part that is going on. I would definitely recommend this for any Cars fan - it's great!

Any good singer can interpret a song, but it takes a stylist to make it his own. James Taylor is a stylist. This 20-track anthology obviously can't chronicle much more than the hits and high points of Taylor's career, but it nonetheless captures the artistic essence of a performer who's become a virtual synonym for "singer-songwriter" since his emergence in the late '60s. A lot of ink has been spilled ruminating about Taylor's role in soothing a '60s-burned generation, but given his own well-known demons (depression, addiction) his gentle voice often sounds like the physician wisely healing himself. His muse seems fully formed from the opening "Something in the Way She Moves," a track cut for the Beatles' Apple label in late `68 (and one that seems to share some symbiotic relationship with George Harrison's own classic "Something" from the period), its tone at once familiar and inviting--if ripe for a few decades of parody--as it wends its way from his seminal early '70s hits through a slate of later originals, R&B ("How Sweet It Is," "Handy Man") and pop ("Up On the Roof") covers. Tellingly, he delivers those chestnuts with an offhand confidence and illumination that makes them his own, a sense that informs even his jazz and Brazilian ("Only a Dream a Rio") flirtations. The set's newly recorded bonus cut, John Sheldon's "Bittersweet," is a pleasant pop confection that showcases Taylor's knack for being laconic and upbeat in the same breath. --Jerry McCulley

Last night, November 29, 2006, I watched the PBS television special presentation of a concert tribute to an exceptional singer/songwriter/guitarist and one of my all-time favorite musicians, James Taylor, honoring him as the 2006 MusiCares "Person of the Year." My deepest congratulations to Mr. Taylor for a well-deserved recognition.
It was a very enjoyable show and he was honored by some of the renowned contemporary singers of today namely: Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Chicks, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow and Carole King, among others. Each of them marvelously rendered a James Taylor song to the enjoyment of the audience and home viewers as well. I especially like the performance of Carole King singing "You've Got A Friend" while playing the piano and JT joined her in the middle of the performance for a much-applauded duet. Another moving moment is the finale "How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You, which JT described as the song that "summed up his feelings for that night." He was backed by his brother, Livingston, while his cute twin young sons joined them on stage dancing and jumping. JT re-appeared for an encore and he sung one of his hit songs, "Fire And Rain." After watching the show, I was so touched and it prompted me to pull this CD out from my collection and listened to it before turning in to bed. It also moved me to write a review on this CD, which was being offered by PBS together with the DVD of the show as pledge gift with a donation of $150.00.
Flashback: I became a fan of Sweet Baby James when I first heard "You've Got A Friend" and was totally hooked with his music and ever since I've been a faithful fan. Some of my very favorites are compiled in this collectible album such as "Sweet Baby James," "Don't Let Me Be Lonely," "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You," "Fire And Rain," "Long Ago And Far Away," "Up On The Roof," "Shower The People," "Your Smiling Face" and "You've Got A Friend."
This CD is a collector's item and very essential to any Sweet Baby James fan. You'll take pleasure in listening to some of his biggest hits of all-time, which are all self-penned. He is joined by a great line-up of musicians and guest singers, who are all his long-time collaborators during the three decades of his musical career, the likes of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker and Ralph McDonald, to mention a few.

And I just wish he will continue recording for as long as he can - standards, maybe. Why not? I've truly enjoyed his renditions of "My Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight" and "The Nearness of You." And he delivers so well. An album of standards coming soon? ;)

Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him--after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience--to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series of powerful albums. Beginning with 1977's acclaimed Hard Again, a subsequent tour produced Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, recorded onstage in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia with Muddy's band, Winter, and harmonica player/vocalist James Cotton. Enough live material remained for Legacy to release an expanded version with an entire second disc of unissued concert material. It seems even that wasn't the end. This collection returns again to those remarkable concerts, featuring Muddy on five tracks, among them a rousing "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Trouble No More," "Caldonia," and the closing "Got My Mojo Workin'." Winter and Cotton are no less powerful, Cotton redoing Jackie Brenston's hit "Rocket '88'" and Winter ripping up John Lee Hooker's "I Done Got Over It" and "Mama Talk to Your Daughter." --Rich Kienzle

As wonderful as you'd expect.......2007-06-14
They were only together for one album and tour, but the Hard Again band was the most kickass assemblage of blues talent there has ever been. They simply never played anything, either live or in studio, that was not of extraordinarily high quality. This disc absolutely smokes, and it's a welcome treat that Cotton and Winter each get a couple turns on lead vocals. It's very encouraging that there's still this much great stuff left over after after the two disc edition of Muddy "Mississippi" Waters, because that means there's likely more on the way.
Bringin' It Back.......2007-06-14
Muddy Waters' work on Chess Records from the late 1940s to the early 1970s is truly amazing. He was the most powerful blues artist and one of the best songwriters. Many fans think he was in decline in the mid-1970s when "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down" was recorded. This concert document should dispel those thoughts. It might have taken Muddy longer to build up a head of steam, but when he got rollin', he was as "mannish" as ever. With old pal James Cotton blowing away on harp and Johnny Winter (who ignited Muddy's revival by producing his later records on Blue Sky Records) as his co-stars on the 1977 tour, Muddy was pushed to the heights he regularly reached in his 1950s and 1960s heyday ("Pinetop" Perkins on piano, and Bob Margolin on guitar also shine). The live version of "Can't be Satisfied" - the second cut on the disc - is as strong as any live recording in his career. I saw this band at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. and the three stars were on fire and having a whale of a time. When I bought "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down," I thought, "there is no way this recording will be as good as I remember the show." But not to worry, it's all here and hearing it again made me smile at the memories of Muddy, James, and Johnny pouring out electric blues. A rousing "Got My Mojo Working" (the encore) finishes things up nicely. Someone once said, "In Muddy Waters' hands 'the blues' is a misnomer."

The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song getscaught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s-tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. This music, this movie, this Script is so awesome! An amazing portrayal of a struggle for stardom. Beyonce' is beyond beautiful and "represents" the icon "supremely" (sorry...had to go there!). The music is so well written, I love each and every track! Enough has been said about Jennifer Hudson, she has won her due, but ALL the actors did an amazing job.

Great music from the movie. My only complaint is it's literally pulled from the movie, so it's a little weird to listen to it while not watching the movie, the singing dialog from the movie. Jennifer Hudson is the highlight throughout the album.

I love this CD...it takes me right through all the emotions and action of the movie. Nothing is left out, all of my favorites are included even the less commercial cuts like Eddie Murphy's "Jimmy Got Soul" which gives the CD a well rounded feel.

Dreamgirls IS the best musical since GREASE... HANDS DOWN!! great songs and great performances by Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Jamie Fox, Anika Noni Rose, and especially Eddie Murphy... that boy did his thang acting and definatley singing. i almost forgot that eddie murphy had a really good singing voice...
of course the showstopper "and i am tellin u (im not going)" is my favourite song. im only 23 and im familiar with the original version performed by jennifer holiday. i love the original but to me J-Hud Killed it!!!! i perfered her version just because it was heartfelt and she performed it OUTSTANDINGLY in the movie. i cried in the theaters when she performed it... STANDING OVATION!!!!
my other favourite track is "i meant you no harm/jimmy's rap". i love the beginning of the song. eddie murphy SANG that song. then it threw me off when he started rappin. that rap was too funny!

I bought this album for one particular song...gee, can you guess which one? "You're Beautiful", of course! I just love his voice and I especially love the sentiment he expresses in this song. The rest of the songs are good, too, but I was hooked by just the one.

My CD collection runs the gamut - from Roger Miller, to Elton John, to Def Leppard and I can tell you this is an incredible CD from start to finish. My favorite is So Long Jimmy but I like them all and I usually skip through at least a few songs on every CD. My parent don't usually like ANY of my music but I put this on to play Memorial Day while we were grillin' burgers and they loved it! He has a haunting, and amazing voice - buy it - you won't regret it.

James Hillier Blunt is one of the most interesting voices to hit Rock & Roll in quite a while. Combined with his somewhat dark and soulful tunes, he's extremely interesting to listen to. Back to Bedlam was his debut album, which hit #1 in the UK charts and #2 on the American Billboard 200, and is a great sounding album that I can listen to with my teenage daughter.
I love You're Beautiful (of course!), and No Bravery - two great tracks! So, if you like good music, then check out James Blunt and Back to Bedlam! It's easy to see that he is going to have a long and fruitful career!

This is Etta James's first full-length album, recorded for Chess Records' Argo subsidiary in 1960. It taps all aspects of her then-blossoming talent. There's the crooning rock ballad "My Dearest Darling" and the elegantly symphonic "Sunday Kind of Love." Her classic, brokenhearted "All I Could Do Was Cry" follows the sweet title track and the bawdy blues stomper "I Just Want to Make Love to You." And there's a version of Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather," which Lena Horne made famous. In addition to James's well-known hits, including "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "Stormy Weather," there are four additional songs: "My Heart Cries," "Spoonful," "It's a Crying Shame," and "If I Can't Have You." The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.
Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.
This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.
In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma has never sounded better as sung by Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the 1955 movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's unforgettable Broadway musical. The memory of MacRae's beautiful voice lives on with this CD. I never tire of hearing this wonderful music.
