Shares Peckinpah's Sentiments.......2006-08-10

This is a highly romantic soundtrack. It captures the essence of director Sam Peckinpah's Westerns very intuitively. The best of Peckinpah's Westerns were concerned with characters that outlived their time and era and were trapped in new surroundings in which they did not fit and could not escape except by some extraordinary act of catharsis. Daniele Amfitheatrof's score for MAJOR DUNDEE truly reflected Peckinpah's sentiments. On one hand you have the traditional and sentimental DUNDEE MARCH that immortalizes and evokes images of a grand cavalry brigade. Many of the instrumental tracks on this soundtrack counter this grand image with elegiac passages and fleeting moments of melancholy for lost glory and for changing times. For the Confederacy, Captain Benjamin Tyreen's act of bravery, heroism and sacrifice is perhaps one of the South's last gasps at a gallantry to be lost forever. Amfitheatrof's soundtrack captures these moments so endearingly here.

Perhaps, I am being a bit biased here, if only because I was personally associated with the composer in the final 10-years of his life. This is a fine soundtrack, despite some unwarranted criticism being levied against it by the management of Sony Pictures Classics when they arrived at their ludicrous decision to replace it with music by some unknown composer in 2005. Good Old Fashioned Soundtrack.......2005-10-08

MAJOR DUNDEE is a good old fashioned soundtrack. Daniele Amfitheatrof composed identifying themes for various character elements. We hear the catchy Major Dundee theme throughout which sounds like a constant call to rally behind him and his obsessive mission. There is a romantic love melody, southern musical references for the gentlemen of the South and a reoccurring theme for the invading French lancers. The battle music is frenetic and equally rousing. This is a superlative soundtrack.

Cryptic Soundtrack from Amfitheatrof.......2005-09-30

It finally made it to compact disc! Daniele Amfitheatrof's soundtrack for MAJOR DUNDEE is an intriguingly forlorn composition strewn with lingering pieces of morose. Mitch Miller's rendition of the MAJOR DUNDEE MARCH provides a more conventional and straightforward musical approach to this Civil War tale set in Mexico. This soundtrack is a real curiosity piece and very interesting for anyone who loves to analyze the musical compositions.

Esoteric Score from Daniele Amfitheatrof.......2005-09-28

Daniele Amfitheatrof's score for Sam Peckinpah's MAJOR DUNDEE is a combination of classic Hollywood film scoring and some innovative electronic effects mixing both rousing sentimental passages of the Western - Civil War genre with enigmatic and curiously melancholic and haunting pieces of morbidity. The lurid acts of savagery and human degradation of the body and soul are vividly captured by this strange score. This soundtrack is a rather extraordinary offering and if you have not seen the film you may just wonder what all this means and what all the fuss is about in this would-be classic from director Peckinpah. On one hand you get Mitch Miller and the Gang belting out three catchy upbeat tunes. The MAJOR DUNDEE MARCH is rather inspiring and uplifting. Juxtaposed to this track 3: THE ESCAPE is downright eerie and disturbing. Interestingly tracks 4 and 7 include sound effects of the two major battle skirmishes. This soundtrack certainly has it all. Perhaps Amfitheatrof's Russian background (he was born on October 29, 1901 in St. Petersburg) gave him a singularly unique perspective on the American Western genre. I like this soundtrack because it truly brings many images and moods to mind.
