Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars I Am Sam CD.......2006-11-10

Beatle's lyrics combined with today's musical talent. A great combination! If you love the Beatles, you'll love this CD. I keep ordering "one more", it's taking care of a lot of people on my holiday gift giving list!

5 out of 5 stars I AM SAM SOUND TRACK IS GREAT!.......2006-11-04

I REALLY ENJOYED THE MUSIC WHEN I WATCHED THE VIDEO AND FELT INCLINED TO BUY THE SOUND TRACK. I AM GLAD I DID. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTD.

4 out of 5 stars Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21

I have to admit I have never seen the 2001 movie from which this soundtrack is based, nor do I know the significance of the Beatles music to the characters. However, once I heard Rufus Wainwright's acoustic cover of "Across the Universe", a touching performance that puts his yearning, mournful voice to good use, I was curious what other surprises could be in store on this disc. I later found out the reason these musicians were recruited for the recording was a matter of economics. Producer Andy Gershon wanted to use the original Beatles recordings, but apparently, Michael Jackson, who owned the rights to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, was charging $300K for each song they recorded. As it turns out, the resulting disc is pretty solid, offering a great variety of reinterpretations of familiar songs - some quite wonderful, others less so but none too painfully.

Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.

Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".

Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.

5 out of 5 stars Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09

It will always be incredibly challenging to match the artistic talent that The Beatles possessed. Nevertheless, this set of songs by the artists on this CD is as good as it gets to achieving a proper, respectful tribute to The Beatles with thoughtful and passionate cover songs.

The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.

The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!

Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."

The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.

Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.

5 out of 5 stars Touching Movie, Beautiful Soundtrack.......2006-04-15

The music on this soundtrack compliments the movie alot. They're deep songs that fall into a deep story of a mentally ill man fighting for his right to care for his daughter. The songs on this CD are all meaningfull. They are all based off of Beatles songs. This album is 100% worth buying along with the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-04-24

I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.

4 out of 5 stars Winged Migration CD.......2007-02-08

Awesome, for the most part- best after watching the documentary. A couple of songs had to skip through, but the rest is a good post movie mental review- watch the movie first...

The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.

5 out of 5 stars THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22

Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars 38... 39..........2006-11-27

What's great about this soundtrack is the uniqueness. Wait a sec. I know, now-a-days thats hard to come by, in fact its almost nil. The soundtrack to the Proposition has odd tempos, haunting vocals, and whispering voices. All of this compliments the great film that you are seeing on screen. If I could compare the style of this soundtrack to another, if I may, I would say that its similar in grain to the Carnivale soundtrack. If you are a writer, and need some inspiration of the dark mooded, atmospheric variety, then this is for you. The opening theme is uplifting and sad, kicking of an edge of ghostliness. This is a great soundtrack. I recommend that you listen to the samples above to determine if it's up your alley, because a writer needs "correct" inspiration, depending on the mood of their setting. Personally, I love it.

3 out of 5 stars Peggy Gordon.......2006-08-22

The missing song on the CD (unfortunately it is missing) is the Irish traditional song Peggy Gordon. I guess the CD wanted to emphasize Nick Cave's music only. When the DVD comes out, I highly recommend this picture, which although quite brutally graphic at times, has brilliant cinematography throughout. The film left me feeling that I had just seen a series of images any of which would be suitable as a still life or landscape. Breathtaking!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, Ambient, Escape to That Peaceful Place in Your Soul.......2006-06-27

My brother's partner leant me a copy of this CD about two months ago before I bothered to even find out who this Nick Cave was or what the heck was this movie called The Proposition all about. Funny thing was, as I listened to this soundtrack again and again in my car I kept thinking, what a great work of music and how I would like to have something like that in my own movie someday. Several days later, I did the research and found out that it was a movie soundtrack. It is the kind of the music that enhances the emotions that a person empathizes with when watching another human being endure sadness and tribulation. It is the link between the character depicted on the screen with the viewer's own similarities and familiarities. It is that necessary element that really enhances a movie and leaves the viewer with that sigh, yes, that one slightly-heavier-sigh we all exhale upon the conclusion of a really fantastic movie. What one finds when they "relate" to the character on the screen. Is that not what the genius of good movie score is supposed to do? This soundtrack does just that. The music is not overly "actiony" in the sense of a standard Hollywood action film. Nor is it stylisticly formulistic like John Williams' music. No, this music is somehow present without it being noticed. After viewing the film at a private screening, I can only attest to its strength as one of this year's top rated scores. It is, to a large degree, based on the same repetitive motif and melody, but for some reason this works. The score listened to by itself may strike the listener as, haven't I heard this before, but viewed when overlapped with the film it all makes congruent sense. If you, the reader, found music that accompanied such movies as Traffic, Solaris, American Beauty and others enjoyable (not specifically restricted to only Cliff Rodriguez' music, though) then you will likely find the score for The Proposition on equal, award-winning footing. Beautiful. Uplifting. Simple. Clean and straight to the point, musically speaking. Kind of like oh, I dunno, the way honest music ought to be written?

4 out of 5 stars Moody wasteland music.......2006-06-26

Next to his Bad Seeds albums, Nick Cave headed the realisation of the soundtracks for two Australian movies by director John Hillcoat. "Ghosts... of the civil dead", a tough prison movie, partly written by Cave and the barely known "To have and to hold".
The first movie stands firmly on its grounds, as does its eerie unconventional soundtrack which is filled with off beat sounds and voices. The second soundtrack didn't meant much to me, it seemed more like a quicky, a "little something in between more important projects".

Now John Hillcoat is back with "The Proposition", a western set against the background of the vast, rough Australian wildlands.
Fully scipted by Cave, this time the singer / songwriter asked his Bad Seeds member, violin player Warren Ellis, to write and create the music together.
The result is as atmospherical as eerie, with some vocals by Cave, but much more blend in with the music then above it. So this is by far not a solo act by Cave, not even when he sings, hums or mumbles but a surprisingly effective pas-de-deux.

When Warren Ellis' violin howls and cries, the music becomes almost melancholical and sad. Senses of no hope of redemption creep in. Its music to contemplate by, ponder and wonder, while sitting in your back yard or on the porch of your house, overlooking vast plains of wasteland.

In a way, you could compare this with "Night on earth", the only complete instrumental soundrack by that other unique singer / songwriter: Tom Waits. It's low-key, slow paced, keen on atmosphere and so well done that you can listen to it whether or not you have seen the film.
In fact, just as "Night on earth" is as much a Tom Waits album as most of his other classics, "The Proposition" is just as much Nick Cave as anything else this man has done.

And that tells it all.

5 out of 5 stars Nick Cave's music is NOT party music!.......2006-03-06

I was invited to Chester's birthday party. It was in the city (S.F.) + I got him some Nick Cave books as he loved Nick Cave. The party was in full swing and the CD was filled. Filled with only Nick Cave. I mentioned that I felt Nick Cave was NOT party music. This fell on deaf ears. Everyone seemed quite content to have nothing but Mr. Cave playing. Hours went by. Hours of Nick Cave. I still mentioned how I felt this was NOT party music. I survived the party-the continuous drone of Nick Cave. It was NOT party music! And now his new album is out. A soundtrack to a screenplay both credited to Nick Cave. I just got it, I like it a lot, I'm having a party + you're ALL invited. Come on by, bring some Nick Cave. It's a party! Yes, come on by! Drop on in! Dig all Nick! Now!

4 out of 5 stars An unfortunate CD release.......2006-07-24

While this 13-track original score is largely incomplete and (as many have commented) full of the more useless cues; stuff we could do without, there is a 34-track bootleg floating around. I don't know how to get a hold of it, but it's circulating through the internet, giving David Newman the true audio release he deserved for one of his best musical efforts.

1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2005-10-06

Why have a soundtrack that has all of the songs people don't care about? Basically this cd has all the background music that you never notice and quite frankly don't care about. Most of you who want to buy this cd is the same reason why you would buy any other, because it has one or two (very rarely three) songs that you want to get. The song that you are probably looking for is when the three of them with the baby are walking to the peak (where they ride in the ice caves) togather. It's called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Hope that helps

1 out of 5 stars Song not on CD.......2004-04-26

To those of you interested in this CD in lieu of finding the "songs with lyrics" in the movie ICE AGE, got bad news for you. They are NOT here! I really do hate it when a soundtrack is put out for a movie and they don't include the best or features songs in the movie. Anyway, the song that pretty much everyone wants when Manny, Sid, Diego and the baby are together and walking towards Half Peak is called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. It is on their latest album "When I Woke". Put Rusted Root in the Amazon search engine and you should find it. Hope this helps those looking for this song.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Soundtrack I've Ever Listened!!!.......2005-12-07

Firstly, the soundtrack of the movie is better than the movie...I watched the film and it was so dark...and boring! But,when i bought the soundtrack i saw that the soundtrack is much more different!Especially,
Ill Nino-I'll Find The Way is my favorite. And I'm the fan of this group and i'm from Turkey.Sorry if you don't understand me clearly...
As a result, the others are also perfect. And this is hit!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-10-25

I simply do not understand how a movie as atrocious as "The Cave" could warrent such an impressive CD. Granted, only one of the songs is even in the movie, but I mean, to get Killswitch Engage, Lacuna Coil, Mastadon and Nightwish just to name a few...wow. I was totally blown away that they could put together a collection of ______ (insert prefered genre name for this type of music...i don't care) of such calibre. Kudos to the producers

5 out of 5 stars who cares?.......2005-10-17

People read these reviews to get info about the albums, not to read you queers arguing about what type of sub-genre of rock things are like this is some chat site. Go play with your gerbels, and let the adults use the website!!!...Oh, by the way, this album kicks ass, as do all of the bands on it! Peace!!

4 out of 5 stars These songs are NOT in the movie.......2005-08-25

Just got back from a sneak preview of the movie "The Cave" of which this is the soundtrack to. Be warned, only one of these songs is actually in the movie. The Nightwish track, "Nemo" is played over the closing credits. Nothing else is heard in the movie. I have to say I was very surprised to hear Nightwish though. They are great and I highly recommend their two previous albums, "Century Child" and "Once" from which "Nemo" was pulled.
By the way, the movie is absolutely horrible.

3 out of 5 stars One eerie collection of music, so much better than the movie.......2004-09-14

I've always liked Jean Auel's Ayla books, but found the movie to be awful- so little to do with the book. I can't honestly say I remember the soundtrack, it seems to me that much of the music must've been played at a very subdued volume, but most of the selections do seem to go well with what I remember of the story. The selections (I've only listened to the 30 second samples)tend to have a very eerie sound to them some have tribal elements mixed in. The music is definitely better than the movie, with what people are asking for used(usually)copies of the CD there ought to be a reissue that is more affordable!

4 out of 5 stars Musical companion for the prehistorical spirit in all of us........2001-10-23

Sometimes you have to listen to a soundtrack without the movie, to really appreciate the music. This is one of those soundtracks. Each track has been masterfully designed to re-tell certain events of the story. The music compilation is raw and gripping. It's amazing that the human brain came up with this. It'll sweep you into a different world!

5 out of 5 stars It captures the magic and power of Jean Auel's tale of Ayla........1998-12-23

As a little girl,I watched Clan of the cave bear. I loved it.I feel in love with Iza,Creb,Uba,and Ayla and her son durc. And when i read the book,I realized the the composer captured a story of early human perfectly.

1 out of 5 stars it wasn't very good..........2005-05-14

I personally didn't like it, just my opinion. I don't usually buy soundtracks but the music on this one wasn't very good!

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!.......2005-05-14

OMG, this is really not a very good CD... why would you want to buy a soundtrack for a horror movie anyway? and listen to people talk on it... honestly! It's really a pointless CD and a waste of money!

3 out of 5 stars David Hess is NOT on this CD!.......2005-01-28

A search for David Hess turned up this CD, which he is NOT on. David contributed SIX songs to the Cabin Fever Soundtrack, including the closing credits. Do not buy this CD if you are expecting to hear David Hess music from the film, those songs are available separately from David Hess at his own .com

5 out of 5 stars Awesom Stuff.......2003-09-19

The Cabin Fever soundtrack captures all the fun and insanity that makes the movie such a riot to watch. The soundtrack features a few cool songs from the movie (The Turtleneck's song is hilarious) as well as some well placed dialogue cuts, but for the most part this soundtrack is a show piece for Nathan Barr and Angeleo Badalamenti. Nathan's tracks are great mood pieces that work great with the film and would make great Holloween music if you need some for a haunted house. As far as Angelo's work goes...it's awesome. His stuff is more subtle than Nathan's work and its adds a nice contrast to the other tracks. Some tracks feel like they came straight out of Twin Peaks. Great stuff! I highly recommend this soundtrack!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Solid monster movie score........2005-12-31

I picked up this sountrack not knowing what to expect really, I saw The Cave during it's theatrical run and couldn't really say I remembered much of the score.
Nevertheless, I was very surprised by this soundtrack for several reasons, one being that it contains FORTY (yes, 40) tracks (!) and 75 full minutes of music. That alone impressed me to the degree in which I decided to buy the soundtrack.
Another reason I enjoyed the score was for the great variety of sounds composers Johnny Heil and Reinhold Klimek use. Those looking for a theme-heavy score will no doubt be disappointed (though the first few tracks hint at a theme established in the 1st piece, "Cold War Romania"), but the two composers throw in every type of sound you can think of: Full orchestral stabs, electronic beats, pulsing sounds, even African-styled flutes (forgive my lousy descriptions, I'm more accustomed to reviewing movies than music, soundtrack collecting/reviewing is kind of new to me). The score can some times be pulse-pounding and exciting, other times adventureous, other times suspenseful.
If I have any real complaints it would have to be that perhaps a couples tracks fall into the "cliched-jump-scare-music" category that plagues so many horror films these days, but at the $15.99 I payed for the CD, I'm happy with what I got!

Even if you didn't like the movie (I thought it was okay, more tension and gore would've helped though), check out the score.
It works better on CD than it did in the movie if you ask me!

By the way, my real rating for the score is three-and-a-half stars, but Amazon.com doesn't give you that option, so I thought I'd be nice and round up.

5 out of 5 stars Good score!.......2005-11-17

From the talented composers of the weekly series "Without a Trace" brings another motion picture horror score! The forty track, seventy-five minute score boasts non-stop suspense and some very intense string action! A fine score release in My opinion and shows that Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil has what it takes to be elite.

Album Description

A powerful western drama set in the savage Eden of 1880s Australia, The Proposition is an elemental story of family conflict and primal violence, destructive love and divided loyalties. Featuring an international superstar cast including Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson and Danny Huston, it is directed by John Hillcoat from a specially commissioned script by the globally acclaimed singer-songwriter Nick Cave. Cave has also composed the film's soundtrack in conjunction with Warren Ellis, his longtime Bad Seeds collaborator and multi-instrumentalist frontman of The Dirty Three. Incorporating soft chamber pieces, ghostly moodscapes and whispered laments, these 16 tracks are as starkly beautiful as the landscape of the film. Story and music are closely intertwined. EMI. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Ghostly and Hypnotic Soundtrack.......2006-02-02

First, this isn't going to be to every Nick Cave fan's taste, but it should be. I haven't seen the movie, but the cover photo of the CD and the ghostly hypnotic soundtrack give you a good idea of how its gonna be.
With the Proposition soundtrack, Nick Cave and longtime sidekick Warren Ellis show yet again how full of talent both of them are. Though its not for everyday listening, this striking work deserves a place on every serious music lovers CD rack.
An elderly woman for whom I played the CD said parts reminded her of Phantom of the Opera. Not having seen that, I can't agree or disagree, but that comment gives some a point of reference.
Cave's music becomes increasingly complex and diverse as his career progresses. Don't miss this!

5 out of 5 stars absolute soundtrack.......2005-10-07

I've seen the film, visited the set, visited that part of Outback Queensland many times and the soundtrack is integral to the film - as it should be - obviously!
It balances the bloodbath with the tenderness beautifully.
