Cooley High (1975 Film) [Original recording remastered] [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The 1975 nostalgia picture Cooley High has aged well enough--inspiring the concept of Boyz II Men's debut album (which included a hit cover of the theme song, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday") and recently growing in stature as a classic of the era's black cinema--to prompt this rerelease of its soundtrack album. Former Spinner G.C. Cameron's version of "Goodbye," guitarist Luther Allison's "Luther's Blues," and a handful of snippets from Freddie Perren's score are included, but the real meat of the disc lies in its selection of mid-'60s Motown classics. And among unsurprising choices by the Supremes, Temptations, and Four Tops, are two songs that connect most clearly to the film's themes of youthful abandon and innocence: the full giddy six-and-a-half minutes of Stevie Wonder's "Fingertips" and the fragile vow of the Miracles' "(You Can) Depend on Me." --Rickey Wright

An Essential Motown Album.......2006-04-10
This is a great soundtrack to one great movie.
Although nowadays many of the songs here are also on dozens of other Motown comps, this still remains an essential collection for two very good reasons:
1/Freddie Perren (The Corporation) laid down one fine score.
2/This is the only single disc collection to include G.C. Cameron's magnificent "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday," otherwise only available on the 4-CD boxset, HITSVILLE USA VOL.2: MOTOWN SINGLES 1972-1992.
Groovy Soundtrack to a Groovy Movie!!!.......2006-02-16
This soundtrack to the 1975 movie Cooley High is a real gem as well as a wonderful album to have. This title is filled to the brim with unforgettable 60s Motown classics. You name the groups, their material is on the album. From Diana Ross and the Supremes' "Baby Love" during the opening credits to the Four Tops' "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" during the closing credits, this is feel good music. Only six of these songs were recorded in '75 for a few scenes in the film, but the rest of these songs were from the 60s. Another neat thing about this soundtrack album is that all of the songs appear in the exact same order as they were heard in the movie, unlike some other movie soundtracks had songs that were mixed up. This is the kind of music title that needs to be a part of your oldies collection and/or your Motown music library. I highly recommend watching the movie as well; you'll be "groovin'" with the movie characters to these songs, and having lots of fun watching it.
The M&M of music collections, i.e., Melodious and Marvellous.......2000-07-07
This is a CD that will literally make your senses beg you to play it over and over again. You cannot go wrong with this CD - it sweeps you with its buoyant tunes right from the opening notes of Diana Ross' Baby Love - its playing right now ;); next comes Stevie's Fingertips - at first glance this song may be dismissed as being a confused medley, but, it simply grows on you. My favorite is #3 (I can't help myself), and #12 (You beat me to the punch); hmm....thinking about it, I simply enjoy all the songs - for a hard core Pink Floyd fan like me, this album was a sweet shock/surprise - it's really hard to classify this album, except that I get the same thrill from this album as I do, when I listen to Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (at full volume, of course).
In the parlance of teen vocabulary, this album doesn't rock, but, instead, makes you wish you could join in the music, the moods, and the sheer enthusiasm that permeates through all the tunes.
This album completely, and thoroughly, exemplifies the adage, "Old is Gold." In no small measure, this album is also a fabulous value for its price - 22 superb songs for so little - the price knocks you down first, and then, of course, the music....
