Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

NOT A GREAT SHOW, BUT FUN, NONETHELESS . . . ........2007-06-20
HAZEL FLAGG is a curious animal. The show, ' . . . a satire on the manipulation of people, especially the general public," is based on Ben Hecht's screenplay for the 1937 Carole Lombard/Frederick March vehicle, "Nothing Sacred," itself based on a story by James Street. Hecht is also responsible for the musical's book, with lyrics by Bob Hilliard. Jule Styne, fresh from the success of HIGH BUTTON SHOES and GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, not only wrote the music but acted as the show's producer as well.
HAZEL's disappointing 190 performances (compared to over 700 for each of the previous shows) can be blamed on that old Broadway bugaboo: bad book. "The show did lose something in its transformation to a musical. The songs and dances tended to drag what was originally a fast moving story and, as many other show writers have found, satire is something that rarely works as a musical. Ben Hecht, who was successful as a playwright, was not at ease with a libretto and the inexperienced producer should have recognised this and brought in help. Even so, Jule Styne's score, whilst not quite top notch Styne, does include the enchanting 'How Do You Speak to an Angel?' and the popular 'Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York." (from the liner notes by Rexton S. Bunnett)
Marc Miller, writing in "The TheaterMania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings," says HAZEL FLAGG was " . . . intended as Helen Gallagher's stepping-stone to stardom in the title role of a Vermont lass who's thought to be dying of radium poisoning and is transported to New York by EVERYWHERE magazine for a supposed last fling. (Guess what happens to her prognosis.) Gallagher works very hard here, and her contralto belt is strong and secure. She's supported by such Broadway reliables as Benay Venuta, Jack Whiting, . . . and Thomas Mitchell (who doesn't sing a note but took home a Best Musical Tony anyway). . . . the show does sport amusingly elaborate vocal arrangements by Hugh Martin."
The score is not nearly as dull as Mr. Miller would like us to believe. In addition to "Angel" and "Every Street," the score includes "I Feel Like I'm Gonna Live Forever," "You're Gonna Dance with Me, Willie," and the rather bizarre "Laura de Maupassant," all delivered in fine style by Ms. Gallagher. And "Salomee," here sung by Dean Campbell, became a minor hit for Dinah Shore.
The CD is blessed with a bunch of fun bonus tracks: a young, in-wonderful-voiced Eddie Fisher singing "How Do You Speak to an Angel?", Dinah Shore's recording of "Salomee," Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians performing "I Feel Like I'm Gonna Live Forever," and six tracks by Ms. Venuta, including "When Frances Dances with Me" and "Waltz Me Around Again, Willie" ("Willie Fitzgibbons who used to sell ribbons/and stood up all day on his feet/Grew very spooney on Madeline Mooney,/Who'd rather be dancing than eat./Each evening she'd tag him, to some dance hall drag him,/And when the band started to play,/She'd up like a silly and grab tired Willie,/Steer him on the floor and she'd say,/Waltz me around again, Willie . . . " What fun. The bonus songs alone are worth the price of admission.

Customer Reviews:
A moving look at love and lust.......2003-01-24
This is arguably Michael John LaChiusa's finest musical, and the recording more than does the show justice. Characters come vividly to life in each song, and as the lyrics sharply point out what they think they want, the music subtley evokes their hidden desires. The opening sweet-yet-weary siren song of a prostitute grows into a hot and bothered jazz seduction by a jaded soldier, which in turn becomes the stacatto domination of a young college boy... And so on, until the circle is complete, and everyone says "Hello, again."
There is not a weak link in the wonderful ensemble cast, and the album has the unexpected bonus of featuring many stars before they were well-known. It would be almost impossible to get Donna Murphy, Carolee Carmello, Malcolm Gets, John Cameron Mitchell, Michele Pawk, John Dossett and Judy Blazer to do a show like this today, so it is doubly delightful to hear them together on this recording.
Even in 1994, Michael John LaChiusa was proving himself to be a rising star among theatrical composers. His music for this show aptly displays why he has amassed such a devoted following among theatre enthusiasts.
What Goes Around..........2001-09-03
Being the fan of "new musicals" that I am, I picked this CD up on a whim, and now I can't stop playing it. For those who love rousing opening numbers, humable songs, or lots of tap dancing in their musicals, this is not the one for you. This is a "chamber piece" that examines sexual encounters through the decades. The score is nothing short of brilliant, and I can't understand why no one ever does this show. It's a great recording, a great score, and a great little puzzle (read the stage directions in the libretto). This is one "new musical" you want to own.
We may never be saying... Hello Again........2001-06-06
It's not your typical broadway musical. There's no kicklines. There's no helicopters, barricades or giant chandeliers (thank God!) But there is honest human emotion. There are believable characters. There are hummable songs, and intriguing lyrics. Hello Again is based on "La Ronde" and while you may not think that that would be a great source for a musical... You'd be surprised!!! The musical takes you on a journey from the first notes to the last "Hello, Again" and it's wonderful.
The performances on the cd are very entertaining as well. Carolee Carmello, Michelle Pawk, Donna Murphy are all three women who are now major players in Broadway musical. (Donna Murphy won a tony, Carolee was nominated, and Michelle is a Drama Desk Nominee.) It also features Malcolm Gets from "Caroline in the City Fame" and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator). It's a must-have and I reccomend it to everyone.
LaChiusa at his most affecting.......2001-02-05
Michael John LaChiusa is my personal favorite of the "new generation" of theatre composers; he blends a modern and experimental approach with traditional theatricality in a very exciting way. This 1994 effort lacks a bit of the edge of the recent "Marie Christine" and "The Wild Party" -- in its place is a strange kind of warmth and optimism. Even as the characters of "Hello Again" try and fail to find emotional fulfillment through ... liaisons, there's never a doubt that most of them have the capacity to find it in some other way.
And as is typical for LaChiusa, the score is highly melodic and accessible, if not something that can be easily broken down into individual songs. Insofar as it can, "Tom" is the principal standout. The lyrics are clever and appealing, and the performances first-rate without exception.
Very clever musical journey through the century.......2000-07-10
In much the same way as Stephen Sondheim's Follies, Hello Againscores through its inventive use of a variety of musical styles fromacross the 20th Century. Whereas in Follies the music is used to reflect upon the characters' past, the music in Hello Again positions each character in their own present, a present which shifts from scene to scene. Each song is well-crafted, and with a quick glance through the booklet, it is not too difficult to appreciate the action. My favourite song in the piece has to be Tom, which is so beautifully orchestrated as to be almost unbelievable. Other songs show the humour, fraud, sadness and frustration that can be had within sexual relationships. Although the music manages to remain upbeat and melodic, little joy is visible in these characters' lives. A look at the female cast list should whet the appetite of anyone familiar with musical theatre in the 1990s. Donna Murphy, Carolee Carmello, Judy Blazer and Michele Pawk remain right up at the top of the list of leading ladies, and this recording gives ample explanation of why. I am less familiar with most of the men in the production, but they compare well with the ladies. Together with The Wild Party, this recording shows that Michael John LaChiusa is one of America's leading theatre composers for the new century. This is an entertaining and accessible show, and long may LaChiusa write for the theatre.

Dolores Gray in her element.......2003-11-26
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN is the musical version of the popular James Stewart-Marlene Dietrich film of the same name. Harold Rome's score is given a much-needed lift from the delicious Dolores Gray, who could sing out entries from the dictionary and steal your heart.
Dolores Gray (TWO ON THE AISLE) takes on the Marlene Dietrich role of saloon singer Frenchie. Andy Griffith plays the role of Destry, with a cast led by Scott Brady, Libi Staiger and Jack Prince.
Needless to say, apart from Gray's numbers, the score is very average. Gray infuses her numbers, including "Ladies", "I Know Your Kind", "I Hate Him" (not to be confused with the song from CARNIVAL!), "Fair Warning" and "I Say Hello" with more sass and fanfare than they deserve.
DESTRY RIDES AGAIN opened in the same season that saw the acclaimed long-runners FIORELLO!, THE SOUND OF MUSIC and GYPSY. Other shows that quickly sank in the same season were FIRST IMPRESSIONS and JUNO.
All-in-all, Dolores Gray is the only reason to buy this cast album.
ENJOYABLE AND ENERGETIC --- BUT NOT A TRULY GREAT RIDE.......2003-02-09
Michael Kidd's "Destry," with music and lyrics by Harold Rome, is a zesty, rousing reminder of how great even marginal musicals of the '50s were. Produced the same year as "Gypsy," "The Sound of Music" and "Fiorello," the score contains no standards, but has some lovely ensembles and ballads, as well as some wonderful whoop-it-up western tunes. Starring Andy Griffith, who had yet to discover the idyllic pleasures of Mayberry and sultry Dolores Gray and based on the Marlene Dietrich-Jimmy Stewart comedy, "Destry" would be a welcome addition to any musical buff's library ... even if you won't be too eager to let it ride again and again on your CD player. Thank You, Dolores Gray!!!.......2002-11-09
The incomparable Dolores Gray mesmerizes on this Broadway Cast Recording from 1959. Her recent death makes the work she displays here even more poignant. She was one of a kind who deserved more fame and accolades than she ever got, because her talent was one for the ages. There is no other Broadway voice (including Merman) to compare to hers, and she displays all of her versatility on this recording. From the ballads "I Say Hello" and "Anyone Would Love You" to the roof-raising "Fair Warning", Gray shines in her quintessential role as Frenchy. Andy Griffith makes a surprisingly good foil, and his singing, while not in the same league as Gray, suits the proceedings just fine. Harold Rome, an underrated composer, wrote his finest score for this somewhat forgotten musical, but it is really Dolores Gray who is the draw here. Also, check out the Broadway Cast Recording of "Two on the Aisle" and the MGM musicals "Kismet", "The Opposite Sex" and "It's Always Fair Weather" to experience Gray in all her splendor. Anyone would love her!
Destry IS Dolores Gray.......2002-06-30
What a great, under-sung winner this is. A rousing score by Harold Rome, great orchestrations by Lehman Engel, with stirring, personality-filled voices of the kind you don't hear on Broadway any longer, most notably, the one-of-a-kind Dolores Gray. To the general public (in America, at least) Gray may not be as famous as such legendary Broadway divas as Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Elaine Stritch, Angela Lansbury and others, but she was every bit their equal. In fact, when she did Annie Get Your Gun in London, critics praised her singing and performance as miles ahead of Merman's. She had a stunningly warm and powerful voice, sultry, sly comic chops, a spectacular figure and a tart, acerbic personality. A Tony-winner and nominee several times over, she was adored by critics right up to her final "big" performance in the London revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Follies," in which her biggest number, "I'm Still Here" stopped the show cold nightly. Sondheim reportedly told many people that Gray was the one brilliant thing in the whole revival. On film, in "Kismet" and "The Opposite Sex," we get hints of what dynamite she was. Here, on "Destry, " too, we can at least get a sense of what a knockout shemust have been on stage. The show sounds very much in the tradition of Whopee, Annie Get Your Gun, Oklahoma and Paint Your Wagon. I can't imagine any musical fan not finding it worthwhile.
Super!.......2001-06-20
A brilliant soundtrack! Great lyrics, great music, and great vocals! I would highly recommend this CD to any music lover!
