If Brian De Palma directed Mission to Mars for 10-year-olds who've never seen a science fiction film, he can be credited for crafting a marginally successful adventure. Isolated moments in this film serve the highest purpose of its genre, inspiring a sense of wonder and awe in the context of a fascinating future (specifically, the year 2020). But because most of us have seen a lot of science fiction films, it's impossible to ignore this one's derivative plot, cardboard characters, and drearily dumb dialogue. Despite an awesome and painstakingly authentic display of cool technology and dazzling special effects, Mission to Mars is light years away from 2001: A Space Odyssey on the scale of human intelligence.

After dispensing with a few space-jockey clichés, the movie focuses on a Mars-bound rescue mission commanded by Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise), whose team (Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Jerry O'Connell) has been sent to retrieve the sole survivor (Don Cheadle) of a tragic Mars landing. During the sequence en route to Mars, De Palma's in his element with two suspenseful scenes (including a dramatic--albeit somewhat silly--space walk) that are technically impressive. But when this Mission gets to Mars, the movie grows increasingly unconvincing, finally arriving at an alien encounter that more closely resembles an astronomical CGI video game. But this is a $75 million Hollywood movie, and no amount of technical wizardry can lift the burden of a juvenile screenplay. Kudos to Sinise, his costars, and the special effects wizards for making the most of hoary material; shame on just about everyone else involved. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars All I can say..........2003-02-22

The heartbeat in says it all.. I've seen the movie and it has grown on me... The music tends to be very Carnival like... but still it does have it's good moments...

5 out of 5 stars GREAT-Uh- SUPER GREAT!.......2002-10-29

I absolutely LOVED this soundtrack. When I saw the movie, I was humming the themes over and over for the next year (well, close enough) or so. I loved how he (Morricone) had the same underlying themes for most of the movie, but he orchestrated them(e, ha ha) differently so as to create a different mood. Oh, and I loved that pipe organ part in track six, especially with the chromatic progression of major chords (Please correct me if this is incorrect, although I am almost positive that this is what it was), I thought that it sounded terrific!

4 out of 5 stars Another great score from a bad film.......2002-09-04

It's not the first time a superb score has come from a bad film - a good example is Jerry Goldsmith's from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, or the 1979 remake of King Kong. The only problem I have is the annoying pipe organ during the sixth track. It's all to taste, I suppose...

5 out of 5 stars Completely Frickin' Awesome!.......2001-01-30

I absolutely love this soundtrack. The scene where the rescue shuttle is hit by micro-meters and everyone is trying to "work the problem" is amazing with the score (a very memorable repetive organ). This is because it adds a classic sci-fi mood to the scene which I found unique and original, compared to modern-day scores for science fiction films. The best part is at the end where they meet the martian and they figure out what happened to Mars. When that flute (or whatever the wooded instrument was) makes a sharp break in the score and over-powers everything else, I almost cry because of the emotion that that particular piece brings to the score and film. There is a lot of passion and emotion is this score that is subtle versus the more popular themed scores that grab you right away. Although I like these types of scores, I found the Mission To Mars score to be dramatic, sorrowful and enthusiastic (simultaneously), and heart-driven. This style is very unique compared to Ennio Morricone's older spagetti western/gangster-film scores. He has a very intersting grasp on music and breaks boundries with this score. I think if you enjoyed the original style of this composer/score, you would really enjoy Vince Dicola's works.
