The story of former television writer Jerry Stahl (Alf, thirtysomething, Moonlighting) who descends into heroin addiction as his career soars, Permanent Midnight, starring Ben Stiller, Elizabeth Hurley, and Janeane Garofalo, boasts a moody, psychedelicized soundtrack with favored alterna-rockers Girls Against Boys, Art Alexakis of Everclear, and British darlings Gomez, who deliver the quite effective "Get Miles" from their debut album. Prodigy's controversial "Smack My Bitch Up" makes an appearance, as does Moby, but the real highlights belong to Spiritualized, whose "Take Your Time" perfectly complements the tragic, dark mood, and Black Lab, who add the '80s Goth-sounding "Horses" to the proceedings. A mixture of previously released tracks (usually from Geffen acts) and originals written specifically for the movie (Spring Heel Jack's "A Permanent Theme"), the PM soundtrack captures a world in permanent hyperspace, where glitches in the electronic medium communicate alienation stronger than the singer/songwriters who attempt to hit it dead-on. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Excellent movie, excellent soundtrack........1999-07-12

Surrealistic collection of songs from some very talented artists. I especially like "Overwhelming" by Art Alexakis; if I could choose only one song, that would have to be my favorite. Most songs are a kind of upbeat instrumental, very easy to just sit back and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Not so good Soundtrack.......1999-04-08

Only Very good thing about this cd is art alexakis' song overwhelming, which is GREAT...

5 out of 5 stars Great music from a great Movie.......1999-03-27

This is such a great Compilation of talent stuck on one CD. I especially love Lael Alderman's "Cigarette" with it's low key 'love me' tones. And BT (aka Bryan Thomas) has an excellent track, "Godspeed", that will make you want to explode in a million pieces so you can keep up with the music. And the other tracks cover the highlights of being high on smack!

3 out of 5 stars Good music, terrible recording........1999-01-27

The music of this album is fantastic if you like power house dance music. I especially like track 8, Godspeed. But the recording is terrible. The music comes out blurry and vague. It has been a long time since I hear a CD recoreded this bad. My suggesion: Go to Virgin Records or Tower Records to listen to the album, then, buy other CD which has the song you like on it.
