5 out of 5 stars Speed II Soundtrack.......2006-09-06

This was a gift for my mother and she loved it. Received in perfect condition. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2005-03-26

This is a really good album for the price. My favorite track is 5 which is TK. TK is the theme song only kinda different.

4 out of 5 stars makes you feel like you're in the tropics.......2001-10-09

i think this is a good cd. i am one of the few people that actually liked the movie too. there are good songs on the track that make you feel like being on a boat or at the beach. the "tk remix" is very good to listen to aswell. i am a competitive ice skater and i used parts of that track for one of my past programs. overall this is a good cd and i would recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars The Love Boat this is NOT.......2001-07-17

I work on cruise ships, and rest assured that this soundtrack contains a collection of songs that genuinely do encapsulate the environment for which they are intended: ie pure kitsch (except for the fact that I doubt very much if ANY cruise line could afford UB40, regardless of how the group is doing these days). The remix of Mark Mancina's original "Speed" theme is painful, and while we're talking about him, why has there been no sign of his score? I can only echo the sentiments of one of the other reviewers: that his rumbling, fast-paced compositions have, much to my own frustration, never appeared for public consumption...

4 out of 5 stars Perfect music for a beach party........2000-11-01

I bought this CD this month after A. Waiting three years for a score CD by Mark Mancina to appear, as with the original "Speed", and deciding that it won't ever come; B. Waiting three years for the video to finally come down in price, buying it, and deciding the songs are perfect for the film. With the exception of the "Speed TK Mix" the songs on this CD are all heard aboard the ship, before Wilhelm Dafoe's character pulls out all the stops---literally. I don't really have a favorite track on this one; but by all means. but it and play it at your neighborhood block parties for the summer of 2001.

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE! WARNING ABOUT THE BRITISH PRESSING!.......2006-10-09

On the advice of another reviewer here i chose the British BMG Entertainment International UK & Ireland Ltd. pressing of 2000, supposedly the best sound available. Unlike many reviewers here I bought it for the Skidoo soundtrack, a classic humdinger of a movie unavailable in video. Like many who have seen the film I felt Carol Channing singing the title song was not only unforgetable, but a standout. In fact to hear a clear unedited version was the reason I bought this CD. Unfortunately about half way through her song the master started to go pop...pop...pop... for almost 30 seconds. This is certainly a factory flaw. I tried playing my flawless brand new CD right out of shrink wrap on various high end CD players in different systems; the pops were still there! Maybe they used the master they did due to its otherwise crisp clean sound, but for me it was a heartbreaking disapointment i spent top dollar on and waited weeks for! I decided to give an extra 2 stars for the 2 splendid versions of I will take You There, and of course the wonderful story The Point, but try to buy the NON british version if there is one for the sake of what may be the best song on here; especially if you have seen the movie.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST AUDIO VERSION AVAILABLE.......2006-08-17

If you are looking for the best audio versions, navigating the array of domestic, European and Japanese releases for each Nilsson album can be a frustrating experience.

I have purchased and painstakingly A/B'd them all, and have posted this review on the best editions of each Nilsson title. All you have to do is find this review and the guesswork is eliminated.

As with all my A/B reviews, the discs were compared on two Sony XA7 transports wired via identical Acoustic Zen coax cables to a Camelot Uther DAC.

The entire catalog was issued in 2002 with Japanese K2 remastering. In terms of remastering, K2 would usually be the end of the story, but this catalog is the rare exception: The final six albums in the K2 offering are the best audio versions, but in the front half of the catalog, the UK and one domestic editions are superior.

The 2004 RCA remaster of "Schmilsson" is the only domestic release that is better than the imports.

Here is a list of the best audio versions:

1. Pandemonium Shadow Show/Aerial Ballet/Aerial Pandemonium Ballet (2CD) (2000) UK BMG/Camden Deluxe (catalog number) 74321 757422
2. Skidoo/The Point (2000) UK BMG/Camden Deluxe 74321 757432
3. Harry/Nilsson Sings Newman (2000) UK BMG/Camden Deluxe 74321 757442
4. Schmilsson USA (2004) RCA 82876 572652
5. Son Of Schmilsson (2000) UK BMG/Camden Deluxe 74321 757462
6. A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night (2002) Japan K2 BVCM-37249
7. P*ssy Cats (2002) Japan K2 BVCM-37251 (the UK has one extra track not on the K2)
8. Duit On Mon Dei (2002) Japan K2 BVCM-37252
9. Sandman (2002) Japan K2 BVCM-37253
10. That's The Way It Is (2002) Japan K2 BVCM-37254
11. Knnillssonn (2002) Japan K2 BVCM-37255

The three 2000 BMG Camden UK releases offer more clarity than the Japanese K2's. Perhaps they were working from better source material.

However, the Japanese K2's are definitely better than the UK "2-fer" discs in the later titles. Unfortunately, the K2's are now OOP, more difficult and expensive to locate, although the Japanese frequently re-issue catalog titles.

Before purchasing any OOP Nilsson title off Amazon Marketplace, Half or eBay, I would highly suggest e-mailing the seller (with the catalog number info I have provided above) and confirm the listing. The seller may have another edition of these titles mis-listed.

3 out of 5 stars Nilsson & Tipton were a fab combination.......2005-09-05

I can vouch for Greg Cleary's opinion of SKIDOO. It's utter crap. With the stunning exception of I CAN TAKE YOU THERE, which benefits enormously from George Tipton's brilliant orchestration. Tipton's harpsichord usage is far superior to, say, Brian Wilson's harpsichord usage in CAROLINE NO.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2005-03-14

This is awesome!! When I was younger (I'm 19), my mother played The Point for my sisters and me all the time. Still to this day we sing the songs to each other. It's excellent that I could find this, as the original and everything....I'm totally impressed and overjoyed...:)

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for "The Point".......2003-02-27

"Skidoo" is mostly filler, i.e., instrumental soundtrack music. It's brassy, sort of like the filler music on the "Graduate" soundtrack. But the album does contain one great song ("I Will Take You There") and one good one ("Garbage Can Ballet") plus Nilsson's awe-inspiring rendition of the film credits, which is not something you will want to listen to every day but is an astounding feat of--for lack of a better term--musical athleticism.

"The Point" is the real reason to buy this CD. It's a charming, whimsical children's story with several songs that wisely focus more on melody than on plot development. The alternating of narrative passages with songs does take some getting used to, but is worth it. I don't listen to "The Point" as often as my other Nilsson albums, because the story line makes it more like watching a movie or reading a book. Still, it is an impressive album that is historically significant because it closed out the first part of Nilsson's career, just before he moved into the more adult themes of the Schmilsson albums. Nilsson's narration of "The Point" reveals him to be a gifted comedian, and also provides some insight into his personality, particularly his love of the absurd.

Now for the bonus tracks: "I Will Take You There" sounds quite similar to the original. (Unless you are a connoisseur of "alternate" versions of songs, which I am not.) "Girlfriend" is a bouncy, good-natured tune that I am glad to have here. "Down to the Valley" is a very good song that would have fit in well on "The Point." "Buy My Album" is incredibly annoying--a noisy joke that gets old very quickly. Be ready to leap for the controls before it comes on.

The CD booklet, by the way, is thin and contains some brief but memorable liner notes.

To sum up: This disc is a good value as long as it costs less than one-and-a-half of either of the originals. I would not want to waste my money buying "Skidoo" for its own sake, but it makes an interesting add-on to "The Point."

5 out of 5 stars Many tiny explosions between your ears.......2004-11-28

Go ahead, life is short, buy it. Also buy "Grayfolded", which I have never gotten tired of after dozens (okay, maybe not a lot of dozens) of listens.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2004-06-28

69/96 is perhaps the definitive set of John Oswald's experimental Plunderphonics, a two-disc retrospective covering most of his most famous and often brilliant work, from the entireity of the ultra rare Electrax (or Rubiyat, as Electra renamed it) EP to selections from Plexure, Grayfolded, the original (and highly illegal) Plunderphonics CD, and Discosphere.

For the uninformed, Plunderphonics is sampling taken to the next level, songs manipulated, sometimes beyond recognition and often to completely alter their meaning. Just to briefly list some of the tracks on this album would be difficult. There's Chuck Berry songs compressed down to 10 seconds or less (the Barely tracks), Dolly Parton singing a duet with a slowed-down version of herself (Pretender), the Kronos Quartet compared and contrasted with a generic heavy metal band (Mach), a mashup of the Carly Simon and Faster Pussycat renditions of "Vain" (Vane), a marathon of different singers and their renditions of the Phil Spector song "Ebb Tide" (Ebb), and many many more. It's extremely hard to describe half of these songs without making them sound like less than they are. It's popular music completely mutated into something completely above and beyond most anything pop music has to offer, and some of the tracks showcased were even ahead of their time (such as "Power," a combination of Led Zeppelin riffs and televangical ranting that could almost count as one of the first rap songs).

Augmenting the 62 tracks found in this collection is a comprehensive interview with John Oswald that gives key insight into most of the tracks on the discs: how they were made, what they were made for, the history of Plunderphonics, and much much more. Almost no stone is unturned, and some of the songs he mentions in passing that didn't make the cut for this set also serve to pique one's interest. Maybe another Plunderphonics box set will eventually see the light of day if we're lucky.

All told, this is an extremely well done and exceptionally brilliant package, and should be essential for fans of experimental music or to those who would like to know exactly what sort of possibilities sampling can hold as a medium in and of itself. I'd recommend getting this as soon as you can. While the copyright lawyers haven't made a fuss over this album yet, who knows when they might.

5 out of 5 stars diverging opinions.......2004-06-21

I've found that, every time I find something that I personally find to be absolutely wonderful, some other people will agree with me, but there are quite likely just as many people who have exactly the opposite opinion. When Smooth Earl (whose opinion you will find immediately below) says "I was doing stuff like that on my tape recorder back in '83 when I was in 4th grade, and I did a better job than this guy", it reminds me all those people who say their dog could make a better painting than Jackson Pollock (or Pablo Picasso).
In some cases these people really can't see the difference between a smudge and a Pollock. That's OK. Perhaps to Smooth Earl the entire oeuvre of John Oswald really does sound like something he did in the 4th grade (when are you going to release your album Earl, so we can compare?).
Poor hearing-deprived man, but still, everyone is entitled to have their opinion.
What I object to is Earl saying, "You will be severely disappointed just like me." What a stupid, narrow-minded statement. I obviously don't share your opinion Earl, and there others who don't think like you do - please check out the reviews at the bottom of the page.
I wish that there were listening samples for each of the 60 tracks in this box set, because, like it or not, there is undeniably more variety in this package than in any other musical offering I can think of. Sure there probably is something here for everyone to dislike, but for anyone with open ears, and a desire for surprises, this is a cornucopia of all kinds of music; each kind presented in a new way, sometimes subtly and sometimes brutally.
I suspect that neither Smooth Earl or "a music fan" listened any further than the first couple of tracks, because when they make their analogies to changing radio stations every two seconds they obviously haven't listened to Rainbow, which is an elegiac, glistening shifting of perfectly consonant chords played by the 101 String Orchestra like one big wave; or PreLieu where a live string quartet plays a sinuous, sensual variation of one of Beethoven's prettiest tunes; or Anon which is a chorus of the beautiful voice of Tim Buckley.
And then there is the fast-paced stuff. Perhaps Smooth Earl could edit in the 4th grade as well as Oswald, but I've never heard anyone who can dice and splice as intricately and precisely as can be found in any number of the cuts on Plunderphonic.
In addition to getting a lot of music in this box set, one will also discover a treasure chest of detailed notes (in the 40,000 word interview Oswald sometimes speaks as acrobatically as he composes) and a lot of often very funny visuals which are another way to get an idea of what the music is like. For example, look at the cover collage above: a group photo of U2 has been transformed into a band of Frankensteins, in which David Bowie and Barbra Streisand, or Boy George and Billy Gibbons get grafted into one person.
Oswald suggests that Power (composed in 1975) is perhaps the first Rap song. It was created independent of the concurrent experiments of Afrika Bambaataa and crew, predates Byrne and Eno's similar experiments by 5 years, and in its use of Led Zepplin riffs it predates the Beastie Boys by a decade. One of the reasons some of this music sounds so unusual is that it was created so much ahead of its time. It's kind of like the case of Trout Mask Replica (which also gets transformed by Oswald).
Unlike other commentators I won't presume to say whether you should get this set or not. But I think that any listener whose range of listening interests can go from Stravinsky to Metallica to Public Enemy might be intrigued. Or any one who wants to hear an Agatha Christie story as if it was transformed by James Joyce... or Dolly Parton slowly turn into a man... or Bill Frisell playing with Elvis Presley... Debussy sung by a bird... an almost brand new Doors song ... Anton Webern and the Beach Boys ... Fine Young Cannibals with Annie Lennox (ten years before mash-ups)... a cubist Count Basie... Madonna granulated... it's all here.

1 out of 5 stars Even one star is too much -- DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE.......2002-04-19

Yeah, I heard about this "Plunderphonics" thing in SPIN and ROlling Stone, and they went on and on about how "essential" and "awesome" it was. Then I thought this guy in the review right before mine was just being a "hater" or whatever, but DANG if he wasn't right!

I'm a fan of remixes and samples of sorts, so this compilation piqued my curiosity, but ... I should've saved my money. Yeah, sure, you'll recognize a snippet here and there of a song or a popular artist's voice, but it's so choppy ... and there's no "flow" to it ... it is not music of any kind, just irritating noise. Just like the other guy said, it's like some lil' kid won't quit playing with the radio so it skips to every other station every 2 seconds. Heck, I was doing stuff like that on my tape recorder back in '83 when I was in 4th grade, and I did a better job than this guy.

If you have been wanting to buy this compilation, do yourself a favor: close your eyes, take a deep breath, open your eyes, and LET IT GO. You will be severely disappointed just like me.

1 out of 5 stars Radiostaticstoponastationalready.......2002-03-10

This is probably one of the most annoying compilations I have acquired. While intriguing as a concept, this "music of the last fifty years in a blender" approach comes off as rather grating. A bit like someone constantly changing the radio station without stopping.

5 out of 5 stars Good excuse to watch the film again . . ........2003-03-07

... And I will! Listening to this soundtrack just brings back all the excitement and the suspense of the film. Even though the songs are in the wrong order - not that it bugs the hell out of me or anything! - and the second half of the CD, I don't recognise a couple of the songs, the CD is definitely a must have for any Speed fans. My only hang-up is that the tracks are over too quickly :( and it's no time before the CD is finished and you're wondering what the hell happened to all the tracks!

5 out of 5 stars Speed Score GREAT!.......2002-12-10

I LOVE this CD just like I liked the Twister Score. It hink my favorite song would be the last one "End Title" Its really beautiful and greatly written. If you like speed this is definetly the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Boss of Modern Action Scores!.......2002-12-09

If anyone other than Mark Mancina and the Media Ventures group had taken over the score department of Speed then you can bet your bottom dollar that the movie would have the same power it does and may well have not even have been such a big success. The score so fast moving and exciting that any serious soundtrack collector must go straight out and buy.

There are not many scores out there that get blood flowing as fast as this (Armageddon, Rambo Trilogy) and have the ability to still sound so amazing and dynamic even on the hundredth playback. The traditional use of orchestra and brass sections take a back seat to crazy electronical cues and mad synthesizer beats. While any classical fans out there may think that this cheapens the score somewhat I must say that Speed certainly has redefined modern action music.

Hans Zimmer and his Media Ventures group own this genre practically and Speed is one of their best. Too bad the score to the sequel is not available tho.

4 out of 5 stars What a rush.......2002-11-13

Speed is Mark Mancina's first major film score. He had some before this one, but this is the one that broke him into the film scoring world. The score itself is nonstop action music that never lets up until the "End Titles". The "Main Title" contains a heavy percussive beat laid over blasts from the brass accompanied by strings. The theme appears in bits and pieces throughout the score. The first half of the album is by far the best with highlight tracks including "The Rescue", "Entering Airport", the incredible "Rush Hour", "The Gap", "Helen Dies", "Choppers" and "City Streets". These cues showcase the main theme in several spots. "The Rescue" really shines at the end as the strings burst into a heroic main theme moment. "Rush Hour" is the best cue on the soundtrack with over 6 minutes of pulse pounding thrills. "The Gap" showcases some incredible string work and "Helen Dies" plays the main theme in a very stately fashion. The second half of the album gets a little tiresome with hardly any thematic material, just a bunch of synthesized rhythms and drumbeats. The "End Title" gives a breath of fresh air as the main theme is stated with the piano and soft strings to finish off the score. If the entire CD consisted of the awesome music of the first half, the rating would have been 5 stars. Action music fans will enjoy every minute of this and with good reason.

4 out of 5 stars Mancina is AWESOME!!.......2002-08-22

The action music never stops in this soundtrack. I almost like all the music on this CD. The Track I like the most is "Rush Hour". Speed is exciting, and full of action. I'll say that this probably one of best action score's you can get. The soundtrack sounds alot like Metal gear 1 and 2 by Harry Gregson-Williams. Mancina has done some cool stuff like Con Air or Domestic Disturbance, i like both. A awesome soundtrack for any one who is a fan of film music Buy speed now and you will never regret it!.

3 out of 5 stars So... is it worth it?.......2007-01-25

Let's face it... the only people who are going to shell out $100 on a Slayer box set are die-hard Slayer fans. So the question is, is this set worth the hefty price tag?
Well I think it really depends on just how big of a Slayer fanatic you really are. If you are the type who just has to have everything a certain band puts out then yeah you'll want this. But if you are simply someone looking for the best the band has to offer I would suggest looking elsewhere.
What are some of the pro's and con's of this set?
Slayer (or whoever packaged this set) clearly intended this box-set both to recap their career and to offer lots of unreleased and rare goodies for collectors. Now there are two problems with this. First is the fact that anyone who would be willing to spend $100 on a Slayer product already has all of the tracks that the band is re-capping. In other words most of the first two discs on this set are pointless for the majority of the people who would buy this set as they would already have them all! But... the idea of offering a "best-of" overview as a way of celebrating twenty years of the band's existence does make sense. The next most obvious problem with this however is that American does not have access to Slayer's first 4 releases! It is simply impossible to have a satisfying retrospective of Slayer's career without healthy samplings from Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel and Hell Awaits (luckily there are some live recordings and footage of tracks from these albums to be found on other discs). Next I have to question the sanity of some of the choices on the retrospective... I mean who seriously needs the Criminally Insane (Remix) or the re-working of Aggresive Perfector when they could have put Altar of Sacrifice or Jesus Saves on? Another odd thing is the arrangment of placing Live Undead after South of Heaven and THEN placing Silent Scream after Live Undead... this of course ruins the transition that occurs on the original recording from South of Heaven to Silent Scream. Most of the other track selections are reasonable so I won't complain anymore.
A more interesting idea would be to put two complete concerts from the 80's on the first two discs instead of the "best-of" idea. Say a complete show from the Hell Awaits era or the Reign in Blood era coupled with one from the South of Heaven era. I chose these eras as they are the only era's (sans Diabolous in Musica) not covered in any official live release from the band: the Show No Mercy/Haunting the Chapel era is documented on Live Undead, Seasons in the Abyss is documented on Live: Decade of Aggression, etc. In fact there are NO live videos or recordings from 87-89 on this entire set... in other words while there are performances from virtually every year in Slayer's career on here the entire South of Heaven era remains blank. Very odd.
The rest of the rare tracks on disc two are pretty awful and not really worth talking about.
Now the third disc on the other hand is rather interesting. Aside from the AWFUL "No Remorse (I Wanna Die)" with Atari Teenage Riot this is a pretty good collection of tracks. It has a few songs that have never appeared on any Slayer live performance before. The DVD is even more interesting as it has footage from some of Slayer's earliest shows (the film quality is awful by the way). My only real beef with the material on these two discs is that it has too many tracks that every Slayer fan has already on other live recordings (Mandatory Suicide, War Ensemble, etc.). Personally I would have LOVED a live recording of Kill Again, Behind the Crooked Cross, Crypts of Eternity or even another recording of Black Magic (which is NOWHERE to be found on this box-set as is Captor of Sin).
Finally an entire live CD recorded in 2002 is included in the deluxe version. Overall this is a very good show (it includes the classic At Dawn They Sleep). While far from a flawless performance this is still very enjoyable.
The bonus features include a pointless backstage pass, a photo packed booklet and a cloth wall hangning. The booklet aside from the writing which grows a bit tedious at times is very good.
Overrall this set is really only worthwhile to die-hards. Casual fans will probably be satisfied with getting their first five albums.

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD.......2007-01-24

It's better then I thought it would be. I mean come on it's SLAYER. A great deal of music for a great price.

4 out of 5 stars Excllent 5 disc package featuring the big ones and others!!!.......2006-12-22

This is a great compilation that will get your fix of slayer. Slayer has always been at the top of the thrash metal scence since they were introduced, and have been in my collection for over 15 years now, but not in mass quantities due to my spending it in other areas of my collection. When this came out, it is a no brain addition to my collection. It gets most of the big hits that I want from slayer without having to buy all of the separate albums at a higher price, and the DVD to remind me of what a real metal show is supposed to be like. The 5 disc package I feel was the easy choice because of the additional live CD that picks up more of the older stuff from slayer. Sure, this is heavy in the post reign in blood years, and it misses much of their new stuff, but It has the meat of slayer, and for a first time buyer, or someone like me who wants more fast, without a lot of cash, this is a good value. Check this out, well worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everyone says it is........2006-08-25

I'm dockin' off an extra star because the price is ridiculously high (thankfully I got this much cheaper on eBay) and putting some "greatest hits" songs in the box set isn't necessary. Everything else is sweet.

I really dig half of disk two (the songs released on soundtracks and such), all of disk three, the live DVD, and the bonus live disk in the infamous bloodpack. The booklet is filled with important Slayer dates, a biography of the band, and very good pictures of the band, gig posters, and more. The cloth Slayer banner is now hanging up in my room next to my Wolf Park calendar and while the back stage pass wasn't necessary since its just a plastic card that says Slayer, it makes a nice decoration with my Mardi Gras beads.

You "real" Slayer fans who say Slayer sold out with this, cry all you want while I'll be bangin' my head to "Ice Titan" and other sweet rarities.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing more than a CASH GRAB - dont waste your money.......2006-06-28

There are a total of 5 discs - 4 CD's and 1 DVD. Two CD's contain studio recordings, which every Slayer fan has. The DVD contains some rare footage, as does 'Disc 3', but a lot of unreleased material is missing. The last disc is a live disc 'Darkness of Christ', and its ok, but really nothing special, as its just Slayer live on the God Hates Us All Tour.

So, why is there is ONLY 1 CD of rare recordings. Most die-hard Slayer fans probably have their own archives of rare bootlegs CDs and Videos, so there isnt much included in this box set that we havent already seen or heard. Yeah, its cool to hear some of the Home Recordings that Jeff did, but why not include them all !!! Another reviewer has listed all the rare Slayer recordings that SHOULD be on here. I highly doubt most Slayer fans have heard the song The High Priestess, but it should have made its way onto this poor excuse for a box set. In fact, instead of including a DVD of various clips throughout the years, why not just release the DVD or even a CD of SLAYER back in 1983 where they played songs like Simple Aggression, Ice Titan & Night Rider ?

The only decent part of the box set is the Slayer booklet that came with it. Plain and simple, this boxset is just another way for an old metal band to cash in and exploit their loyal fan-base.

What a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars kick butt boxset.......2006-12-25

Slayer is an amazing band so to get never heard/seen stuff in a sweet looking boxset is extra great. The booklet is great loads of photos and info, plus comments, storys from their career and interviews with the band. An easy to store, loaded with Slayer, Slayer Boxset. Who could want more!

4 out of 5 stars Great 4 disc version, nice addition to a thrasher's collection........2006-12-22

This is a great streamlined version of the 5 disc version released at the same time, minus the second live CD. This comes in an excellent CD sized case with great artwork and 3 CD's + Live DVD. This has all the hits heavy throught the post reign in blood years, plus a few from the past. The DVD gives you a great chance to see and be reminded of what a metal show should be like (War at the Warfield!!!). The live show is not as great as Still Reigning, but is good. This is an easy addition to a slayer fan's collection, or a first time buyer looking at a good value and quick fix to bolster their collection fast with all the important tunes. I prefer the five disc version because I am a big collector, and the extra live tracks I find necessary for completion to my collection, but this is no slouch, and the price is right and I highly reccommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to the Apocalypse is right! .......2006-12-13

Greetings metal heads, I'm going to take the opportunity in this review to discuss two things. The first being some of Slayer's major accomplishments . The second being a review on the box set itself. The first realization when purchasing this collection is it's amazing feat that Slayer have been around for more than 20 years. What's even more amazing is that they have been releasing uncompromising extreme, head banging, face ripping, and jaw breaking metal in that whole time span. Firstly, one has to look at the time when Slayer debuted. During 1983 thrash metal was being born. Thrash being the combination of the New wave of British heavy metal and punk. Bands such as Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Testament, Overkill, Viovod, Megadeth, Nuclear Assault, Hollow's Eve, and yes even the once mighty Metallica were among the many that helped pave the way for the birth of extreme metal. Bands like Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica were taking their love of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead to name a few and increasing the speed and heaviness of their music and combining it with the rawness and intensity of hard punk. Thus thrash was born. Slayer took this a step further by adding lyrical content from influences such as Venom and Mercyful Fate. This was the true anti music of the 80s.

No other band in my opinion achieved this better than Slayer. They might not have been the very first (Metallica beat them by a year). But as far as the raw brutal intensity and heaviness Slayer had them all beat. This is a band that has some of the most loyal fans in all of heavy metal. Metal critics all say if a new band is opening for Slayer and can make it through their set without getting booed, cursed at, and beer thrown at them they must be doing something right. Slayer fans are relentless at letting people know were their loyalty is. Slayer fans are true metal fans. The reason for this in my opinion is that Slayer never disappoints, they have never been what I consider to have sold out, and they have always been the embodiment of heavy metal. In the last 20 years they have only had one member change Dave Lombardo who is now back with the band. This is also amazing considering how many bands that are around for just half as long as Slayer have had numerous line up changes. Slayer are also one of the most un PC bands of their time and still are to this day. They have never won a Grammy, they have not sold millions upon millions of records, and they are not considered one of the greats in music. But inside the metal world they have done far beyond these feats in the hearts and fists of metal fans. Here is a band that has sold 5 million records world wide without any radio play (at least in the U.S.), heavy advertisement and publicity. They just work on word of mouth alone, gut wrenching live shows, and with the help of a few metal magazines and headbanger's ball. And Slayer has done this for more than 20 years!

I am hearing Slayer's influence more and more lately especially in newer metal bands. In fact Slayer is probably one of the most extreme bands one could listen to until the birth of Death and Black metal, Which anyone can see that Slayer are a massive influence to both of those metal genres. All one has to do is look at Slayer tribute record and see the band listings. The release of this set is to reflect on the first 20 years Slayer has brought to the world of metal. The next question being is how is this set?
First, lets break it down this set contains 4 discs. The first disc contains what could be considered Slayer's greatest hits from 1986 to 1991. The second disc contains the best of Slayer from 94 to 2001 plus some hard to find tracks. The third contains unreleased demos and live tracks never heard before from Slayer's whole career till 2003. Finally the fourth disc is a DVD, which contains rare live performances from the band's whole career. Everything included in the set I enjoy. The first disc represents the golden age of Slayer. It is basically what I would consider the best of the albums "Reign Blood", "South of Heaven", and Seasons in the Abyss", plus a few tracks from their live album. The second presents the best from Slayer from the 90s and into the 21st century. The third cd and the DVD are not of the best sound quality. But from a collector's point of view and a huge Slayer fan they are nice to have.

One of the biggest grips with this set is that it contains extremely little from Slayer's metal blade years. There are three tracks from the bands first two albums, but they are live and are actually from the Slayer's live album "A Decade of Aggression". I think this set would have been perfect if a 4th cd were added and it contained songs from "Show no Mercy", "Haunting the Chapel" and "Hell Awaits". But who knows maybe there are copyright laws and the record company Def American could not release any of Slayer's material that is on Metal Blade. My second critique of this set is the price. I hunted trying to find this set under 50 dollars and I just couldn't find it for less than $49.99. In fact most stores were selling it for $55 dollars or more. I find this a bit steep when I have bought box sets with 5 or more discs for $50 dollars or even a little less. Amazingly enough this is the sole reason I held off so long in purchasing this set. Granted it's worth it if one is huge Slayer fanatic, but if someone is just a causal fan I would not suggest this box. The booklet that comes with the set is a fantastic little read. It is full of Slayer facts that I did not know and it does a perfect job on summing up the band and what it means to be a true Slayer fan.

On a sad note Slayer may be calling quits in the near future. After releasing their latest album "Christ Illusion" Kerry King has stated in interviews that they only have one more album due to Def American and after their contract is up Slayer may retire. Plus Kerry states that playing their music with the same intensity just gets harder as they get older. Basically Slayer does not want to become a shadow of their former selves and they want go out on top. Which I can respect but it's still disappointing to hear. At any rate Slayer are still here and they are doing what they do best, ripping our faces off with some of the best metal out there.

    Stay Slaytanic forever!!!!!!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Slayer Rocks!!!.......2006-03-03

    Really 4 1/2 Stars...

Well, I had only heard little bits of Slayer but did not own any. I saw the Soundtrack to the Apocalypse in stores and it was expensive, but I bought in anyway. Well, I loved it! There are only a few bands on earth that can bring this much intensity to your ears. Angel of Death is an amazing track, and I could say that about every one, except for a few off of Undisputed Attitude and Divine Intervention, plus a few of the Bonus tracks. The first two CD's are the Best Of, but the origional Metal Blade Recordings are not here (there is three live MB tracks though). Every song is great, intense, violent, and FAST!!! Then third CD is where this Box Set loses some value. The tracks are OK but the sound quality generally sucks, and the Necrophiliac Intro. could have been left out. The Video stuff is cool, but the quality is only mediocre at best on some of the earler recordings. The packaging is very nice and the very large booklet is extremely coo, it can make you a Slayer expert in under 30 minutes. Buy this, it is well worth the money and you will play it a lot.
Another Note: The bottom of the first three discs are all black, a very cool touch!

5 out of 5 stars A excellent box set for folks like myself.......2006-01-11

As a fan of Slayer who did not own too many of their releases I thought that this was an excellent purchase for the price, though I do not neccessarily think that thats the case with those who own all or even most of Slayer's releases.

The greatest hits portion of this collection, the first two CD's, is an excellet summary of Slayer's career and the main reason that I purchased it. It offes some of the best songs from Slayer's post-Metal Blade releases, which means no studio versions of any songs from Show No Mercy or Hell Awaits, though it does feature live versions of songs from those records from Decade of Aggression.. There are five songs each from most of their CD's, though their three releases after Divine Intervention only have three each. There are also a few extra songs, two from the Japanese release of Diabolus and two from the Japenese release of God Hates Us All, the latter being two excelent tracks, "Adict" and "Scarstruck". I could have done without the song with Ice-T, and the song "Memories of Tomarrow" (which I think is from the Bride of Chucky" soundtrack) was alrigt, though nothing special.

The third CD features live material. There are a few live versions of songs on the first two CD's, but the more enjoyable songs are the early versions of "Raining Blood" and South of Heaven" taken from Jeff's home recordings as well as live versions of a few songs not on the first two disks. The song with Atari Teenage Riot was pretty awful to be honest, but on the whole, this live CD is a welcome, if not spectacular, addition to the box set.

The four disk is a DVD with live performances (including some Show No Mercy tunes at a concert in 1983) and a few extra features like Slayer winning the "Heaviest Band Award" and a short video about the making of Diabolus. Its also a welcome addition to the boxset, though people who own other live Slayer material might not be too impressed as it doesn't offer too much thats unique.

The set also comes with a 72 page booklet, which is a quick though enjoyable read about the band's history and music. Its full of pictures of and quotes from the band, and further enhances the collection.

I would recommend this box set to any Slayer fan who doesn't own very many of their CD's as its a nice summary of their work. People with a complete or near complete Slayer collection should probably only get this if they need to have everything put out by Slayer, or if they really want the few extra goodies it offers, as it doesn't really have too much to offer thats completely new. A good box set overall, and certainly welcomed by those like myself who don't want to spend too much completeing our Slayer collections.

    Amazon.com

This two-CD set was first released by John Zorn in Japan in the early 1990s. It couldn't be sold in the United States because of the cover art, now concealed within the Black Box. These are Zorn's most horrific inspirations--Torture Garden incited by the images of Japanese sadomasochist pornography contained herein, Leng Tch'e by photographs of a Chinese public execution involving extended torture. A key part of Zorn's aesthetic is to create a musical methodology that matches his subject matter, or, conversely, to find a subject that matches his compositional methods. Like Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty, William S. Burrough's cut-up method, or the cutting and pasting of collage, Zorn's methods mimic violence, creating new forms out of the torture and destruction of the old. Torture Garden and Leng Tch'e are, literally, the short and the long of it. Torture Garden consists of 42 tracks, the longest of which is a minute and 14 seconds, the shortest a scant 10 seconds. Musical genres are literally cut up and stuck together, snippets of free jazz, lounge, country and western, pop (ancient and modern), and classical colliding and overlapping in a kind of cultural shock treatment.

The 32-minute Leng Tch'e is drawn out to excruciating lengths in its simulation of the agony (and ecstasies) of torture and death. Throughout the two discs, the execution is at a very high level. With Bill Frisell on guitar, Fred Frith on bass, Joey Baron on drums, Wayne Horvitz on keyboards, and vocalist Yamatsuka Eye of the acclaimed Boredoms), Naked City combines many of Zorn's most talented collaborators, and it inspires some of his most brutish and brilliant alto saxophone playing. The Black Box creates a literal connection between "hard core" music and hard-core pornography. To say that it isn't for the squeamish is understatement. --Stuart Broomer

    3 out of 5 stars Well...........2005-06-30

It had potential. There are some great ideas here; little bits and pieces of the less-than-a-minute songs that really caught my ear. And then... that was it. Many songs are simply unlistenable. The vocals are sometimes amazing, and other times disgusting, and the same with the saxophone. What Zorn was thinking when he threw sax into a grind mix.... is far beyond me. I think he was on some hardcore drugs when he did some of this stuff. (He'd start writing something good, shoot up, then keep writing.)
I give the album/s 3 stars because there is some good stuff here that I thoroughly enjoy listening to. This work is by no means genius or mastery, but it can be incredibly entertaining sometimes.

I will admit, however, that some of the songs (especially speedfreaks) must've required AMAZING skill to play.

Highly recommended for fans of grindcore. Not as much for anyone else.

Leng Tch'e makes good background music, not so hot for active listening.

4 out of 5 stars Stunning, although repeated material........2005-03-26

"The Black Box" combines two albums, "Torture Garden" (a collection of hardcore pieces from "Naked City" and "Grand Guignol") and "Leng Tch'e", a nearly 32 minute piece.

"Torture Garden" is an accurately named and brutal listen-- while the material is stunning in its diversity, direction, and virtuoso performances, its not exactly easy to digest, and it switches directiosn drastically. Within the context of the two albums this material is also present on, it works better. If you've got those two, this is really not of much use to you. If not, this is just amazing-- a song like "Speedfreaks" can cover a genre in two and a half seconds, the album ranges from jazz to blues to neo-classical to pop to rock to death metal, and sometimes in the context of one song under a minute.

"Leng Tch'e" is another story altogether. Its really quite a piece, dark, mysterious, pulsing and growing. Its the kind of thing you're either open to or you'll hate-- improvised grindcore metal, essentially. It builds over the first 15 or so minutes, growing more and more insistent before it climaxes-- over a long period of time with Eye's voice and ZOrn's sax howling, this dies down in a cyclic form, ending similar to the beginning.

If you think you can deal with that for 30 minutes, building tension and darkness until the explosion, you'll probably love this. If not, you'll probably think this is awful.

Personally, I love it. I also love the hardcore stuff on "Torture Garden", though its less necessary given its presence elsewhere, and given the advent of the Naked City box, this set is probably less essential. Still, some great music here.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended except for grindcore fans.......2004-04-27

I've got about 30 Zorn albums, but sold this one. I love the many sides of John Zorn, but this has way too much of the hardcore grinding for my tastes. I prefer more variety like on the first Naked City album--in which the short screaming punk pieces are punctuation between more listenable (even if loud) tracks. This however is just ear torture--not quite ListenProof, but not music that I want to spend my time hearing. Not on my recommended Zorn list, despite the praise of other reviewers here.

    5 out of 5 stars Aural assault.......2004-03-11

Disc one is a repackage of earlier NC works..."punk-jazz/speedcore" mostly less than 90 seconds long. Explosive ejaculations of noise and fury.
Disc two (Leng Tch'e) was only available as a very expensive Japanese import before this set came out. The closest I can compare it to is the first 2 minutes of Lou Reed's "The Blue Mask" (the song, not the album), slowed down 25% and stretched out for 30 odd minutes.

Wonderful!!(if you like this kind of stuff)

4 out of 5 stars NO, buy it for torture garden.......2004-01-30

somebody needs to explain to me what is so great about leng tch'e.

    i'll describe it for ya:
it's a very low, droned out guitar, playing somewhere between 1 and 3 notes. it just...drones. through out the entire song, it just...echos. and that's it. that's what this song does, w/ the only exception being some interesting drum parts thrown in.

torture garden, however, is incredibly impressive. if you're a mike patton fan, you can be disapointed to know that this is where he got his fantomas vocal styling from. this eye guy is incredible.

so i say buy it for torture garden. fantomas's "delirium cordia" is a much better ambient piece than leng tch'e, so buy this and delirium cordia.

    4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

5 out of 5 stars Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)

Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
