Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Steam is the original soundtrack of a Turkish film using the music of two Genoese composers, Aldo De Scalzi and Pivio, who go by the name of Transcendental. The sound of Transcendental is a contemporary fusion of vibrant world music, religious rites, and current technology. Using traditional influences derived from Sufi trance ceremonies along with shimmering electronics, Middle Eastern percussion, and impassioned vocals, Transcendental's distinctive ethno-ambient electronica is both exotic and deeply compelling. A progressive excursion into modern trance music, Steam's soundtrack integrates new and old instruments with Turkish, Italian, and Asian melodies. With hypnotic percussion, weeping violin, and a seductive-sounding stick bass all worked into the mix, this disc is a lush and romantic collection that can transport the listener to an enchanting musical milieu. --Mitch Myers

Following years of ups and downs at RCA, John Hartford moved to Warner Brothers in 1971. Working with fiddler Vassar Clements, guitarist Norman Blake, and Dobro player Tut Taylor, Hartford found his creative muse on the landmark progressive bluegrass album Aereo-Plain, issued in 1972. Hartford's quirky humor was the focus, but his deep love for traditional music served as a framework. This entrancing, occasionally off-center collection assembles selected demos, alternate takes, and unreleased material (including Taylor and Blake instrumentals) from those sessions. While he credibly tackled oldies such as "Where the Old Red River Flows" and Jimmie Skinner's "Doin' My Time," Hartford's originals made the difference. "Don't Ever Take Your Eyes off the Game, Babe," "Howard Hughes Blues," and "Strange Old Man" were good enough for release at the time. His fearlessness even extended to such obvious duds as the inane pun ditty "Emanuel Cant" and the ponderous "Blame It on Joann." However, hearing a take of "Boogie," his famous guttural chant from Aereo-Plain, dissolve into coughing and laughter can't help but bring a smile. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Stop the presses.......2003-10-12

Now if you are a fan of bluegrass, then you are probably familiar with Mr Hartford. His two Warner Brother's albums, (Aereo Plane and Morning Bugle) blew out the chocks on bluegrass more than thirty years ago. These records are so good, they come with their own weather. This release of outtakes, especially at this time (John died last year, piloting his Steamboat into distant rivers) actually brings a tear to my eye.

If you have not heard of John Hartford, start anywhere, but don't skip this one. He plays a style that is as much Uncle Dave Macon as Earl Scruggs or Don Reno, but with a serious blues/pop bent. He also displays a fine wit and a constant sense of the absurd that old hippies like myself find comforting.

Don't let the deal go down!

5 out of 5 stars outtakes can be good.......2002-07-19

With an album full of outakes, one would think John Hartford and the Aereoplain would be a joke. However, after listening to old favorites such as "Where the Old Red River Flows," and unreleased tracks I fell in love with the boys. Featuring Hartford, Norman Blake, Tut Taylor, Vassar Clements and Randy Scruggs this record is a huge success.

5 out of 5 stars "outtakes" never sounded better.......2002-02-18

Yeah sure this is outtakes, but while most outtakes albums make OK museum pieces for the ardent fan, this collection actually works as a completed collection of tunes. I have to agree with Sam Bush's notes to the re-issue of Aereo Plane that I just keep rediscovering this music over the years and it just keeps sounding fresher. Mr. Hartford created a wacky sort of nostalgia for the future when he originally released "Back in the Goodle Days". Now with the release of this almost eerie "Vamp from Back in the Goodle Days" we come full circle with a real nostalgia, but unexpected gift from the past. Bob Carlin's production is superb, and I suspect since the production was largely completed prior to John's death, there is more of John in the grooves (or digital pits, as the case is in this digital day) here than just dust on some old tapes.

A reviewer here mentioned the never released "Radio John". Watch for it's release on the UK label, BMG Camden Deluxe (see their website for further info) in March 2002. Let's hope Amazon is able to deliver it in the US at a reasonable price!

5 out of 5 stars Aero-Plain Flies Again.......2002-02-09

I love this band! I own a lot of John's music and it's all good. But this band had a magic to it that comes out in the recordings. These guys just jell into one mass of entertainment. If you liked John's Aero-Plain release then there's no way you won't like this one. It's energetic, spontaneous, experimental, original, funny and sometimes thought-provoking.

There's some new songs on here that I've never heard before. They're all great quality recodings. And there are some from other releases. For example "Back in the Goodle Days", "Because of You" and "Presbyterian Guitar" from the original Aero-Plain are on this CD. And "Howard Hughes Blues" and "Morning Bugle" from the Morning Bugle album are here too. But they are all different takes. Sometimes you won't even recognize them from their original release. But they are all absolutely great, capturing the original essence of the band in a different way.

And the liner notes by John's old friend and collaborator Bob Carlin provide a unique perspective of this group of very talented musicians.

If you're a John Hartford fan you have to own this one. John lives! Give us more!

5 out of 5 stars a gift from a god of music.......2002-01-24

this cd is simply wonderful, the recordings were recently uncovered and assembled by hartford's band member and banjoist extraordinaire bob carlin, he has given us something really special. as important to own as the two albums that it overlaps with: steam powered aereoplane and morning bugle. now if someone could just release the never-released album radio john, we'd really be swimming in classic amazing john hartford music. this is some of that

4 out of 5 stars Doris Day - Perfect Casting!.......2007-05-09

For once they got it right. Doris Day being cast as Babe Williams was the smartest thing Warner Brothers ever did. Of course, the original idea was to have Frank Sinatra to take over the male lead in the movie version. Sinatra couldn't accept, but if he had, Janis Paige would have played Babe. With no Sinatra as a boxoffice draw, Jack Warner needed a star. Doris Day was promised sole star billing above the title if she accepted the picture. Janis was out and John Raitt (top-billed on Broadway) was in, but would be billed below the title in the movie version.

Usually, Hollywood gets it wrong. They denied Ethel Merman for "Gypsy" and hired Rosalind Russell, who could not sing; they bypassed Julie Andrews for "My Fair Lady" and hired movie star, Audrey Hepburn, who also couldn't sing and Carol Lawrence was told "you're out and Natalie Wood is in" when "West Side Story" came to the screen. Natalie couldn't sing either. Marnie Nixon's voice was used for both Wood and Hepburn and Lisa Kirk's voice subbed for Russell.

With Doris Day, they got everything: a top movie star, an expert singer , a trained dancer and skilled actress. Plus, she was beautiful and took full command of the role of Babe. I just wish they had kept "The Man Who Invented Love" in the picture. I've never seen a Day musical in which she didn't have a couple of ballads of her own. In this film, they attempted to right that wrong with "Invented Love" but dropped it so that Doris could reprise "Hey There" for historical purposes. They wanted Day on film singing that legendary song.

Overall, a wonderful transition from stage to screen.

5 out of 5 stars Pajama Game Movie Soundtrack.......2007-03-16

Love love love this CD. I am so glad the movie version of Pajama Game with Doris Day came out. I have been a fan of this movie since we did the musical when I was in high school in 1980. The movie soundtrack is so much better than the Broadway Recording. Janis Paige just doesn't sing as well as Doris Day. I highly recommend this CD if you are a fan of musicals and Doris Day.

5 out of 5 stars Energy To Burn.......2006-07-31

I know that the revival of "The Pajama Game" is a hit-of-the-moment on Broadway, but I still recommend that fans of the revival check out the soundtrack to the 1957 film version of the show. Warner Brothers treated the property in a more respectful manner than was the norm and even imported most of the New York to Hollywood to recreate their roles "in perpetuity." The new addition was box office magnet Doris Day who had already proven in "Calamity Jane" that she could bring rambunctuous charm to the musical. Hearing Day and John Raitt putting "There Once Was A Man" through its paces can still send a shiver down my aging spine.

4 out of 5 stars Doris Day leads cast in lively film verson of Broadway hit.......2004-02-08

Your choice between the original Broadway cast and the movie soundtrack depends largely on your preference for either Janis Paige on the former and Doris Day on the latter.

Day sings it better, however the Broadway cast album has better sound as well as an overture and three songs, "A New Town is a Blue Town", "Her Is" and "Think of the Time I save" were dropped from the movie.

The soundtrack album, however, includes extended dance music from "I'll Never Be Jealous again" and "Once-a-year-day" and despite the boxy Warner Bros soundtage sound, the music is given a lively performance.

5 out of 5 stars I'm only 16 and I love the movie and soundtrack.........2003-12-08

This is an exellent soundtrack baby. Doris Day has the purrfect vocie, full righ and clear. I'm only 16 and realize taht Doris posseses the finest vocie of any female on the planet. If you like the mvoe or Doris' singing you will LOVE this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Classic album!.......2007-05-21

This is a classic album by Steam! It's worth its price. If you like dance music from the mid 70's don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Get Steamed!.......2004-05-13

The story goes that after singing "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" for the group Steam, Garrett Scott wanted very little to do with the group. "Musical differences" usually gets the nod in these situations but personality conflicts may have played a part. The back cover of their only album has a small picture of Scott with his arms folded looking a bit um . . . steamed. You do the math.

In some sort of arrangement that only the 70's could produce, Scott stuck around long enough to co-write all 10 songs on the album. The new story that I submit is that Scott missed out on singing some great tunes. It was his loss because he wasn't needed anyway. Four unknown singers add the required blue-eyed-soul readings of this collection of great tunes. Sitting somewhere between the Grassroots, Grand Funk (!), and the Left Banke (all good!), Steam certainly performed well under the pressure.

One thing they tried was creating a theme album based on the "Na Na, Hey Hey" refrain. This sounds silly on paper but three songs -- including the hit that leads off the set -- utilize the refrain to great effect. A casual listener may think there is simple duplication scattered throughout the album but it appears to be part of a greater attempt to tie the diverse songs together. "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" is bubblegum but "I've Gotta Make You Love Me" is reminiscent of The Parliament's "Testify" and "I've Cried A Million Tears" is an affectionate ode to The Temptations. "Love & Affection" would have made a great single as well. The song structures in all the songs are fairly complex for pop but well worth the effort I suggest you put into it. This is a pop collection that demands deeper scrutiny.

Now the pressure is on for me to decide if Steam is bubblegum or not. "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" is classic gum simply because so many people have said it is. Steam is a blue-eyed-soul review that traveled the same road as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Amazing Rhythm Aces, and so many others. And although Steam ended up having the most well-known and used song of all these like-minded groups, they were forced off the road before they had a chance to gather up more Steam. Maybe it was unfair to label them bubblegum. In hindsight it certainly seems that way.

This is where I come in and profess a sense of loss that Steam ran out of itself after one great album. Of course, I'm the guy who likes the "real" Ohio Express, so why listen to me? If you love great 70s pop, you'll work up a bit of this group and hit the Amazon.com site and buy this great CD. Otherwise, hit the showers.

(The extras on the CD nearly complete the Steam catalog. Only "What I'm Saying Is True" the b-side to "I'm The One Who Loves You" is missing.)

Based on the novel 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell, The Pajama Game hit Broadway in May 1954 and ran over 1,000 performances. The plot revolves around a labor dispute at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, with two couples (Eddie Foy Jr. and Carol Haney, John Raitt and Janis Paige) in the middle of it. The score, by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, includes Raitt's classic ballad "Hey There" (dueting with himself as recorded on a dictation machine), the humorous "Think of the Time I Save," and "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway," both set to memorable choreography by a Broadway novice named Bob Fosse. The following year, the Adler-Ross-Fosse team would team up again with Damn Yankees.

The 2000 remastered version of The Pajama Game features vastly improved sound and bonus tracks taken from a 1954 radio show: Raitt's "The World Around Us" (dropped from the show) and Raitt and Paige's "There Once Was a Man," both with a rehearsal pianist, and Adler and Ross themselves singing "Hernando's Hideaway" with Ross at the piano. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Just Like I Remeber When I was Young.......2006-07-27

My father was a big fan of Broadway musicals. I remember going to see the Pajama Game and Damn Yankees in a summer stock theater in Warwick R.I. which contributed to me developing my own love for musicals in the 50's and 60's. This recording though in monaural is an excellent reproduction of the LP record my father had and I used to listen to (sans scratches!). I would recommend this to any person who used to like these old classics. I would like to see a local theater group do this some day before it's completely forgotten. The interviews with the composer/lyricist and notes in the CD were wonderful too.

4 out of 5 stars More is less........2004-08-15

A monster hit when it opened in 1954, and still a staple of community theatre groups, PAJAMA GAME has a delightfully refreshing score that never takes itself too seriously. On the whole it offers a better-than-average number of stand-out songs: "I'm Not At All in love", "Hey There", "Small talk", "Steam heat", "Hernando's Hideaway" and the ensmble "7 1/2 Cents." There are, however a few stumbles. "A new Town is a Blue Town" is dreary. "Her Is" is silly although the Bob Fosse dance routine made it work on stage. Both these were dropped from the movie version, so I suspect the authors also felt this material was weak.

The movie retained all of the original cast leads except for Janis Paige as Babe (replaced by Doris Day.) Day sings Babe's songs better, so your choice between the cast album and the movie soundtrack will depend on whether you need the whole score or not.

As for ths reissue...once again Sony has done a first-rate job. The sound is full bodied and rich, though necessarily mono, and the package includes some well-written liner notes.

4 out of 5 stars A great recording, with the best cast, but..........2004-05-03

"The Pajama Game" is a truly great musical. Although it's most popular songs have truly been immortalized, such as "Hernando's Hideaway" and "Hey There", the show itself seems to be sadly forgotten by many (depite winning both Best Score and Best Musical in the Tonys). It remains very popular with amateurs and high schools, though.

This recording of The Pajama Game, a remastered version on the original cast, has VASTLY improved sound and some great extra tracks. Despite the new tracks, though, a lot of the score is completley missing from this recording, and a lot of the songs have been abridged, cutting out dialogue sections and a lot of dance music, like the wonderful "Jealousy Ballet" number, but the loss can be both a blessing and a curse.

The cast is the best recorded, in my opinion.

John Raitt as Sid - I'm not sure if this show was Raitt's star turn or Carousel was, but regardless, he is a fantastic talent and it really shows on this recording. His solos on this recording are superior to any other renditions. "Hey There", "A New Town Is a Blue Town", and "There Once Was a Man"(my personal favorite) are just fantastic. Great all around.

Janis Paige as Babe - Ok...she grows on you. If Paige is not singing in a more characterized voice, than she needs to be shot because she sounds like a wounded animal, BUT for the role her funky voice is very well suited. Her belt voice doesn't use much vibrato or any classical broadway norms, but her much grittier voice brings a more "real" feel to her character. "I'm Not At All In Love" is great and her comedic-like turn in "There Once Was a Man" is also fantastic.

Eddie Foy Jr. as Hines - I just recently finished performing as Hines in a production of "The Pajama Game" so I know the role well. Foy is my favorite recorded Hines, he has such a different voice and personality to his character that simply cannot be imitated. It's a shame so much of his role was cut from the movie. "I'll Never Be Jealous Again" is pleasantly comic, "Think Of The Time I Save" is cute and pleasant, and the opening is also great. An excellent performance.

Carol Haney as Gladys - Gladys is THE show stealing role of "The Pajama Game", and the underrated and underused Carol Haney stole this production way back when. Haney is cooky, lovable, and on stage, a fantastic dancer. Haney stepped into the role originally envisioned for Gwen Verdon and made it the role it is today, funny and wonderful. Haney sings two of the show's classics, "Steam Heat"(the best recorded), and "Hernando's Hideaway" both totally wonderful.

Stanley Prager as Prez - A really great performance. Prager gives a rough, growling voice to Prez and it comes off as a great perfomance. "Her Is" is great, as is "Seven and A Half Cents"(although Prager's voice humorously cracks in mid-verse). A good performance.

Reta Shaw as Mabel - Can't pull off a cute and perverted old lady any other way. Shaw's performance is solid in "I'll Never Be Jealous Again" with Foy. Pleasant to listen to.

Well, all in all, this recording, though very abridged, has the best cast and is just as good as a choice for a recording of the show. Both is better, but for casual and curious listeners, this one beats the London cast. For those who really want the full score, go London. If I had to pick the superior, I would very reluctantly choose this one(reluctantly, due to the abridged score and Ms. Paige. One thing is for sure, every theater lover must own a copy of this wonderful show.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent musical...one of the best.......2003-05-28

I love the Pajama Game. First of all, it had an immense influence on me, having been the first musical I ever heard and the force that originally set in motion by fixation on Broadway musicals.

I also have to _deeply_ disagree with Mr. Stuart Howard, and to suggest that he in fact has no idea what he is talking about. All the musicals he said were "more important" than the Pajama Game only seem that way because they have been revived time and again. "Pajama Game" simply had the bad luck to become hopelessly dated due to cultural changes, and thus nearly impossible to revive successfully. Still, I personally think "Hernando's hideaway" and "Think of the time I save" still qualify as modern classics, and certainly it's hard to argue that "Once-a-year-day" hasn't been absorbed into our cultural consciousness.

As for Ms. Paige, I _love_ her cynical, witty delivery and extremely unique voice and style of singing, and I tend to believe that anyone who can't see her appeal has, to be blunt, outlandishly poor taste in music.

I love the Pajama Game, and, incidentally, I _highly recommend this CD. John Raitt's voice is a little cold, but it is also amazingly beautiful. The three comedy relief roles will all have you howling, Janice Paige is, as stated before, a genius, and unlike in my musicals, the songs will give you a sufficient idea of not only the story, but the characters...and "The Pajama Game" has deeper and more complex characters than any of the other old-fashioned musical comedies I can think of.

4 out of 5 stars The Cat's Pajamas.......2003-02-18

Super score. Two standards of the genre: Hey There and Hernando's Hideaway, but also a number of outstanding production numbers and duets: "Seven and a Half Cents", "Steam Heat", "I'll Never Be Jealous Again", "There Once Was a Man". Most of the singing is excellent but sometimes I have to admit Janis Paige isn't on pitch and I prefer (dare I say it) Doris Day in the movie. John Raitt is the professional he always was. This is a 50's musical through and through, filled with serious love songs, comedy with a satirical bite, and endless energy. The extra tracks on this CD are nothing too wonderful, with excerpts from a pretty banal interview with composer Jerry Ross, but they do include a song you won't hear (for good reason -- despite inteviewer Mike Wallace's glowing support it is a pretty bad song) in the show. Want to know why this show was so good: George Abbott, John Raitt, Bob Fosse, Harold Prince, Adler and Ross, Eddie Foy, Jerome Robbins, Carol Haney, Peter Gennaro. Yes, there are shows with a power-packed line-up like that, that have been bad, but not many. Enjoy the memories this will bring back.

In his best moments on Steam, his fourth album, Alabama-raised country singer Ty Herndon powerfully conveys both frank sensuality and earnest soul-searching. In the sensuality department, Herndon serves up unbridled passion on the title tune, as he does on Randy Newman's high-energy, playfully naughty "You Can Leave Your Hat On." By contrast, on "Lookin' for the Good life" he draws a painfully honest portrait of spiritual poverty amid material plenty. "Pray for Me" is a similarly powerful, meditative statement about finding Christian strength through humility and compassion. Only now and then--on "In a New York Second" and "A Love Like That"--does Herndon succumb wholeheartedly to his chronic Achilles' heel: a weakness for musical bombast and bleating earnestness reminiscent of Michael Bolton or Garth Brooks at their most wretched and excessive. When this happens, the end result is overproduced, overperformed power-country pop ditties that are mostly glitz and smoke but little substance. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars One Question..........2005-01-22

I just have one question for A Music Fan...are you blind, deaf, or both? Ty Herndon has a great voice, has had many hits, and is very easy on the eyes. My personal favorite song on this one is No Mercy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!!! .......2004-10-01

@.@ wow! thats what I have to say about Ty Herndon's Steam CD. I have to say that this CD is hit after hit after hit. At first I thought that my favorites would be "Steam" and "No Mercy" but after listening to the CD, I found that this was not the case. All of the songs on this CD were so good it is hard to pick a favorite. "That's What I Call Love" would have to win the bet though. I have to say that I am NOT regretful for purchusing this CD and will recemend it to anyone who likes Country Music!

1 out of 5 stars Bleghh.......2003-03-09

I noticed that this guy released a greatest hits album. that's very funny. what hits??? i laugh at the thought that he had enough songs to scrape together an album and call it "greatest hits". one old song that i really love is "what mattered most", but that is IT. how sad. "steam" is not that great either. the title track sounded unique on the radio when it was released as a single, but i went back and listened to this album and hardly any of the songs are good. ty herndon was and is an artist with no substance, and to top it off, he's not very good-looking either.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD MUSIC BAD PERSON.......2001-02-07

TY IS A VERY TALENTED MAN, AND HE HAS A GREAT BAND(RIDE THE WEST). HOWEVER THE JUDGEMENTS MADE ABOUT TY NOT GETTING THE DESERVED ATTENTION IS TOTALLY FALSE INFO. I HAPPEN TO KNOW TY, HIS BAND, AND CREW. HE IS NOT AS SENSERE AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BELEIVE. HE IS SELF CENTERED AND ARROGANT. HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HIS BAND, CREW, FANS, OR SONG LYRICS. HIS ONLY CONCERN IN LIFE IS MONEY AND HIMSELF. GET A GRIP PEOPLE, DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE UNLESS YOU KNOW THEM! JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE FAMOUS DOESN'T MEAN THEY DESERVE IT, IF HE GETS WHAT HE DESERVES HE'LL BE SLINNING FRIES AND MCDONALDS FOR A CAREER SOON!

4 out of 5 stars A great Cd with some catchy tunes!.......2000-09-15

You may have noticed that I gave this CD only four stars. Don't let that faze you--this in an excelent CD. The only problem is pretty much IN A NEW YORK SECOND. Ty Herndon overdoes it a little here. YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT ON is probably my favorite, but I can't believe it's a remake of some older song. It sounds like it's pure Ty Herndon! PRAY FOR ME will leave you in tears, and A LOVE LIKE THAT will have you dancing the night away. Buy this album now, before it turns to STEAM.

Remember seeing TV advertisements for this CD as well as it being mentioned or even refered to on sitcom(s) before.Personally,I'm giving this disc a four-star rating mainly for the price.Total of 22 tracks, there are cuts here I haven't heard in SO long I honestly coudn't even tell you who was president the last time I've checked out tunes like Judy Collin's "Both Sides Now",The Mamas&The Papa's "I Saw Her Again Last Night",Steam's "Na Na,Hey-Kiss Him Goodbye" and Len Barry's catchy "1-2-3".A must-have for big time oldie fans.

Much praised in the U.K. press, this is a reissue of the 1991 debut of a highly touted Buffalo, New York, band. Somehow tuneful psychedelia cheerfully coexists with the white-noise maelstrom. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-02-28

Yerself Is Steam is an album of sweeping anthemic bursts of rock that follow strange trains of thought. The opener Chasing A Bee is a symphony of skilfully applied distortion and rumbling guitar attack behind world-weary lyrics, leading up to an earthquake-like climax and then subsiding to the tune of a flute, leaving the listener breathless at its conclusion. There are also the majestic swirls of Coney Island Cyclone, the straight hard rock of Syringe Mouth and the intelligent piano, orchestral buildup and poignant lyrics of Blue And Black. Steam was a most impressive debut album that extended the boundaries of rock in daring new directions. Just be warned that this is not immediate music - it takes persistent listening to really grasp, let alone appreciate, its subleties.

2 out of 5 stars Less than steamy.......2005-08-13

Mercury Rev are known now for their melancholy orchestral pop and ye olde rock'n'rolle. But they had a very different sound in their debut album: 1991's "Yerself Is Steam," a sound dominated by ex-member David Baker. Don't expect the rough sweetness of their second album...

This is a far less appealing album, and far set apart from the sound of every album that came after it. Thick waves of fuzzy guitar and rough synth overwhelm the title track, and obscure all lines but the ominous "Remember that yerself... is... steam!" The resulting dark pop song is strangely compelling, in a weird psychedelic manner.

Unfortunately, it gets old by the fifth time you hear it. Only a few songs really deviate from that fuzzy, disconnected sound, cycling around until the songs blur together. The melodies of half the songs sound alike unless you listen to them several times, and many of them have unmelodious squeals and synth flourishes that make that hard to do.

There are a few songs that break from the mold, however. "Blue and Black" is an enchantingly ghostly melody that bursts into dark grandeur by the end; consider it a preview of what Mercury Rev later became. "Sweet Oddysee Of A Cancer Cell T' Th' Center Of Yer Heart" has the same sound as most of the other songs, but stripped down and expanded into a rich, epic soundscape.

And of course, the bonus track "Car Wash Hair," which only got tacked on with the later release, is pure beauty -- half rainy garden, half enchanting, mellow pop tune. Alas, these three alone can't overwhelm the misuse of fuzz guitar and squealing guitar.

It certainly doesn't help that Baker -- who was drummed out of the group after this album -- has a very unappealing voice. He doesn't sing, as Jonathan Donahue later did; instead, he intones in an annoying twang. He sounds like a cowboy trying to go avant-pop, and only sounds hideously out of place, especially when reduced to just yelling "Yeeeaaaahhh!" over the music.

Released four years and a band breakup before anything else Mercury Rev did, "Yerself Is Steam" is dramatically different -- and not in a good way. Instead, it sounds like the Pixies on a bad acid trip.

4 out of 5 stars Tracks 1, 5, 6.......1999-08-20

Most of this album is Janes addiction/ arena rock rip offs, but tracks one five and six make the whole trip worth it.

I highly recommend driving through Colorado black mountains(to the west of 75) with the windows open blasting the music so the scene and sounds merge

4 out of 5 stars Strange interpretation of "classical".......2005-01-17

I bought this CD because it contained some songs I was having a hard time finding elsewhere, such as Passo pel prat, Chants d'Auvergne sung by Fredrica Von Stade. However, some of the songs on this CD do not seem to belong e.g. all three songs by John Williams, Mack the Knife, Barbra Streisand, and the Psycho Murder Theme for starters, and many more.

I gave the CD 4 stars only because I was happy that I was able to find a few somewhat rare tracks.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting mix..........2002-05-18

This is a sampler in the truest meaning of the word. I bought this 4 CD work primarly for two tracks, but also because I was interested to see what else was out there without investing a fortune in CD's I wouldn't like! I was surprised by the wide diversity of music ranging from true classical and jazz to contemporary compositions and interpretations.

While I find some tracks divine (Williams's _Schindler's List_), I find other tracks unsettling (_Beau Soir_ performed by Barbra Streisand). But when you are trying to span 100 years of music, you will (and should) encounter all tastes and styles. Overall, I really enjoy listening to this set. My only regret is that I don't have a CD changer...

    5 out of 5 stars A touch of history...........2002-01-28

An exceptional set. The history of music making of the 20th century in 4 CDs. Even from the first track with Giuseppe Campanari and Charles Adams Prince you can see that people put much time in collecting the best interpretations and putting together an amazing collection. Other highlights include the "Mack The Knife" with Lotte Lenya, the Bachiana Brasileiras, The Fanfare For The Common Man with LSO conducted by the composer and so many more. An undespiuted *****
