Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Amending my own review.......2004-06-28
In my over-exuberance on discovering a recording of excerpts from "The First Men in the Moon," I failed to adequately do justice to this release in my earlier critique. Naturally, my bias toward the aforementioned selection blinded me to the other superior and quite eclectic works on this compilation.
Johnson's compositions show the diversity of his musical palette. "The Avengers Suite", besides featuring the internationally known theme, also has a two hauntingly beautiful selections: "Theme from 'Pandora'" and "Theme from "'The Joker'". His "The New Avengers Suite" reflects the times with its disco era theme and also shows his flair for jazz with the "Theme from 'Tale of the Big Way'". "Theme from 'Obsession'" is so beautifully layered with lush strings that it induces goose bumps upon an initial hearing. Johnson borrows liberally from "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" in "The Bomb Run" from "Dr. Strangelove".
The big "find" for me is the "Hedda Suite", a composition that compares to John Barry's Bond music and the classic "Born Free". Johnson's passion for music is never more evident than on this selection.
Perhaps, others will discover Johnson and see what a select few and myself have always seen: he is a master movie music craftsman.
A gem of a score to an almost forgotten film!.......2004-06-18
To the fellow reviewer that was disappointed with this disc, I must say that he, obviously, expected more from a compilation containing music from six different scores. What more can one expect, a little here, a little there, just enough to whet one's musical appetite!
As for me, my "appetite" was quite satisfied for the recording contains the lost gem of Johnson's creative wiles: The First Men in the Moon.
The classic Harryhausen film allows Johnson to be panoramic as well as mysterious as he grandly adapts his music to the Wells story. The score to this movie is up to par with Bernard Herrmann's work on Harryhausen's earlier "Mysterious Island" and "Jason and the Argonauts".
I just hope that there is a full rendition of the score in the not-too-distant future.
We fans deserve it!
Fair Warning to "Avengers" fans..........2001-11-23
If this CD was entitled something like "The Best of Laurie Johnson", I would have absolutely no problems at all with it. It is however entitled "The Avengers", which is a very misleading title, as only a minimal amount of music on this CD has anything to do with the original "Avengers" TV program. Composer Laurie Johnson is probably most well known for his "Main Title" music for the "Avengers". Yet of the twenty-four tracks in this collection, just three are credited as being from the original program. It is just unbelievable that from such a long running series, a total of less than 9 minutes of music was deemed suitable for inclusion on this CD which has a total of 62 minutes of music.
To say that it is disappointing, that such a small quantity of music from the original "Avengers" was included on this CD, is a gross understatement. Surely there was more than 9 minutes worth of quality music present, in even a season's worth episodes. This is just a pitifully poor effort. The way the product was produced and packaged makes one question the sincerity of both the studio and the artist. The intent was obviously not to produce a genuine compilation of music from the "Avengers" series. Instead other works by Laurie Johnson are being marketed under the "Avengers" name.
These other works consist of musical selections from "The New Avengers", the 70's revival show, and various other movie soundtracks scored by Laurie Johnson. Included is music from "Dr. Strangelove", "First Men on the Moon", "Hedda" and "Captain Kronos, Vampire Killer". These titles are plainly listed on the cover of the CD, so of course the studio can claim that the buyer should have known what they were getting.
The music from the "New Avengers Suite" is four tracks, totaling 12 minutes. So apparently more quality music was present in the sequel than the original.
The "non-Avengers" music is actually not bad at all, with the selections from "First Men In the Moon" being the most exciting, and "Captain Kronos" coming in second. There is no doubt that Laurie Johnson is a very capable composer, and his other "non-Avengers" music does stand on its own merits. That is not the issue at hand, honesty is.
What is truly disappointing is that this "bait and switch" collection is all there is available. A CD with music exclusively from the original "Avengers" apparently doesn't exist, and that's a shame. Based on the continuing popularity of the show, there is probably adequate economic incentive to put such a collection on the market. Perhaps it may happen.
The music was recorded in 1979-80 and then was apparently first issued in 1980, maybe on vinyl? I have no idea what music was actually on that recording, but the bottom line regarding this particular CD is, do not buy it if you are looking for a decent collection of music from the original "Avengers".
The Best of Laurie Johnson.......2001-05-11
I didn't know of what this digital score soundtrack was going to be like, because I mainly got since it had the films "Dr. Stranglove" and "First Men In The Moon." But I heard a sample of two "Avengers" music and just fell in love with it. It's sad to see that Laurie never got any awards or nominations, because his music for "Hedda" was just beautiful, and I haven't even seen the film. After hearing the music for "The Avengers," I wish that I could've saw the shows in the 60s. Thank you Laurie for making this album and for being the conducter for it, because I doubt that anyone could do it better than you can!
The Avengers - a must have for Avengers Fans........1998-08-30
A first rate Soundtrack. I just wish it were a longer. Part of the album contains other soundtracks by Laurie Johnson which are'nt bad, but they are not from The Avengers. Still its well worth a listen. Highly Recommended.

one of the best, if not THE best american punk bands ever.......1999-07-26
so not only is penelope, the vocalist, the pinnicle of strong smart influential rock women ever to breathe air, but the band that backed her had the passion, brains and brawn far lacking in so called punk bands tocay. a must buy
San Francisco's Finest 70's Punk.......1999-07-13
I had a crappy cassette tape of the orignal Avenger's EP that I taped back in the early eighties. So I'm glad to see this CD collection of San Francisco's finest 70's punk. For those who don't know: The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols last show at Winterland in SF. Then slowly disappeared. Penelope Houston, the fabulous singer/songwriter has put out a few Cds in the nineties, Very unpunk but still great songwriting. Her voice can still be just as intense although more grownup, like most of us old punks.
IF YOU LIKE PUNK YOU MUST OWN THIS ALBUM!!!!.......1999-07-09
I can't even begin to explain how great this band is!! But, first of all, yes, this CD does have more than 4 songs on it, it has 18. The Avengers were active in L.A. in the late seventies and, for the quality of their songwriting, the intelligence of the lyrics, and the ferocity of their performances, are probably the greatest punk rock band of all time. This is an album of melodic, socially-conscious, late-seventies-style punk songs, some from that period, some recently recorded, and I can't even tell you how good it is, you just have to hear it for yourself. Every fan of punk rock should own this album.

Album Description
Finally, a legitimate reissue of the legendary surf album that has over the years consistently sold in mint condition for $300. Obviously better than the bootleg for the sound and it contains bonus tracks and detailed liner notes by surf expert Robert J. Dalley. Originally recorded in 1966 this CD contains the original version of the song made famous by 'The Bomboras' called 'Time Bomb'. One of the finest instrumental albums ever recorded. the 3 bonus tracks are, 'Hall Of The Mountain King', 'Coming Home Baby' and 'Sahara'. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.
Customer Reviews:
Awsome Avengers!!!.......2005-03-07
This album is a surf music classic! A friend recommended this rare album years ago and I recently found out that it was re-released in 2001. The original vinyl is a collectable and is worth a couple of hundred dollars but the real value is the music. The album consists of cover and original songs with great organ/piano riffs and surf guitars. If you're a surf music buff then this album is for you!
Just because it's "rare" doesn't mean you want it.......2004-01-20
The original vinyl pressing of this album is supposedly one of the rarest surf albums of all time. If you happen to come across it at a garage sale, buy it! It's worth hundreds of dollars as a collectible.
Now they've taken the original master tapes out of the vault and released this album on CD. Skip it. While the musicians seem to know what they're doing from a technical point of view - the actual playing is almost flawless - this album just doesn't have any character. It's dull and boring. Just turning the reverb up on the guitar doesn't make it surf. Good surf guitar makes you feel like grabbing a board and running out into the water, even if you've never surfed in your life and you live in Iowa. This album doesn't do that.
The best thing this reviewer can say about "Real Cool Hits" is that the quality of the recording is excellent for 60s surf. Too bad there's no reason to listen to it.

British TV spies Emma Peel and John Steed have always conjured images of saucy sophistication, so the musical accompaniment to their film debut should be equally debonair. Marius deVries sets the first appropriate note, with an updated Avengers theme that combines strings with beats. Grace Jones and the Radio Science Orchestra tackle the picture's meteorological bent with the sultry "Storm," an epic, Bond-worthy theme. Sadly, after the groovy "Many Weathers Apart" by Merz, The Avengers soundtrack tosses together oh-so-usual bits of ska (Suggs from Madness), alternative rock (Dishwalla) and "electronica" (Roni Size) that fail to set the mood. The anticipated Ashtar Command tracks, one featuring ex-Veruca Salt singer Louise Post; the other, Sinead O'Connor, are little more than novelty collaborations. Individually, each Avengers track delivers, but the Verve Pipe's mediocre "Blow You Away" proves that they should have called in some swinging Brits like Pulp or Suede for this mission. --Liisa Ladouceur
Album Description
Soundtrack to 1998 action flick, starring Uma Thurman, features tracks from Suggs (Madness), Annie Lennox, Stereo MCs, Utah Saints, Baby Bird, Ronnie Size, Ashtar Command feat. Sinead O'Connor, & many more. 14 tracks. Atlantic.

As pointless and stupid as the movie.......2006-11-17
and what makes it worse is that they could have included "I'm In Love With Emma Peel" by The Allies, a great bit of pop music, and failed to do so. Bleagh!
a collage from marius de vries.......2001-03-02
Marius DeVries is one of the hottest music producers out there. His work with Madonna and Bjork has gained lots of attention, and this project prooved to be as successful as his past recordings. He's produced and lent a hand on almost every track on this CD, adding a cool flavor to the various artisit's expressions. My favorite rock out tunes are Grace Jone's "Hurricane," Annie Lennox's cover of Bjork's "Mama," Sinead and Ashtar Command's "Summer's End," Stereo MC's track, and of course the main title. If you are a fan of the Propellerheads, the soundtrack to recent James Bond films or the Matrix, I guaranttee that you'll like the cd.
get the right picture from the cover!.......1999-11-24
you have the wrong picture so I cannot even give it a review! please fix it!
Great.......1998-10-01
A whole spectrum of music is covered on this CD; and all seem to fit the movie. The first two tracks are taken straight from the film, and are fantastic - Grace Jones's vocal power fits the song wonderfully. Then the non-film tracks begin, with great trip-hop beats from Annie Lennox (doing a Bjork cover), Stereo MCs; rock from Suggs (a very breezy, swinging track), Merz , Babybird, Ashtar Command and Sinead O' Connor. There's even some electronica thrown in from Utah Saints and Roni Size; and a truly great track from Dishwalla - I can imagine Emma Peel dancing to this one! Some tracks may not tickle your fancy (they will grow on you though) but on the whole, very, very good.
British music in U.S.A........1998-09-13
Although foreign music is making a comeback in America, I, and many others, still need to get used to it. Besides Grace Jones and Sugar Ray, Brittish music isn't all too bad. The songs were okay....some but they didn't really fit the movie. Just look at a picture of Ralph Fiennes in Avengers costume and listen to the CD. It's just not......them.

Customer Reviews:
A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14
This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.
Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.
Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.
Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
Great overall CD.......2000-01-06
I love this cd as much as I loved the movie (I being one of the four people, worldwide, who did, apparently). Anyhow, the music is great. I especially love the theme, "Solve My Problems" and "I Am". Note also that Amazon's song list is incomplete: there are 14 songs, not just 9. It's a great buy, especially for spy movie fans.
Buy it for the Theme Song.......1999-01-13
The pounding poly-rhythms of conga drums interfaced with orchestral sound makes the beginning theme one to along anywhere. Unfortunately, the rest of the album does not fare as well. Sugar Ray does not fit in with the rest of the tracks and many of the techno-orientated groups should stay in the disco-techs they belong. The Verve Pipe may be the best track except for the theme. But the theme's worth it.
