If Danny Elfman the film composer seems ever farther from Elfman the former cult rock icon, his work on director Ang Lee's adaptation of the Marvel Comics legend suggests he may be reinventing himself yet again. While he seems to have largely abandoned his melodic interests somewhere south of Sleepy Hollow, the diverse concerns--ranging from bright, propulsive rhythms and repetitive wind phrases through ethnic modalities of (deliberately) undetermined origin and delicate pastoral touches--suggest a textural mindset more akin to Herrmann, but informed by the incandescent, hypnotic cadences and sonorities of Steve Reich and other post-modernists. While he occasionally lapses into the overbearing tribal drum sturm und drang that may have made some listeners of his overwrought Planet of the Apes score yearn for an umbrella, they are at least leavened here by slashing horns and Middle Eastern vocal flourishes. Subtle electronic sound washes ebb and flow throughout, serving up a percolating tension the composer gleefully punctuates with blasts of brass and thunderous percussion. This isn't your mother's--or Lou Ferrigno's--Hulk, and Elfman has done a fine job of musically propelling the big green fella into the 21st century. Also features the Guns N' Roses-meets-Stone Temple Pilots line-up of Weiland, Slash, Duff McKagen, Matt Sorum, and Dave Kushner performing the angular riff-rock of "Set Me Free." --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

4 out of 5 stars The Elf-man Becomes The Hulk.......2007-02-21

Danny Elfman has been the musical voice of many superheroes. While this is neither "Batman" nor "Spider-man", "Hulk" does have some interesting moments in the middle of that Oriental style that most composers want to use in their music these days.
I'm kind of upset that there is no discernible theme for "Hulk", execpt for a six-note motif that is heard all over the CD. There is the music for Bruce Banner and his father, mostly played by, I think, the duduk. Then there is Natacha Atlas who does the odious moaning on this CD. Thank God Elfman isn't at all influenced by the Oriental music style because he uses electronics and percussion to maintain the right balance between the artistic and the classic Hollywood compositions. The action music heard in 'Hulk Out', 'Hounds Of Hell', and 'The Lake Battle' is fantastic and very propulsive, good Elfman compositions. The rock song 'Set Me Free' is the last track of the CD, and deservedly so because it feels like out of context with all the rest of the album.
But not all the Middle-East influence is bad, and neither is Natacha Atlas. Because there is the track called 'Captured', which is the best musical cue of the CD. I don't know why, but when I first heard it in the movie theater, I sorta started dancing to it. It's too cool. I really love that theme, and when I got the CD and listened to it for the first time, I turned up the speakers because it's such a fine piece of music.
"Hulk" is a good composition by Danny Elfman, but I'd say 'Captured' is the real deal on this album, and if you don't like rock, then skip the last track.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting eclectic mix of non-traditional Elfman music.......2005-02-21

Yes, there is alot of percussion which is a staple of Elfman, but in writing the music for a their super-hero franchise, Elfman breaks new ground. Rather than the dark flourishes of Batman & the high flying theme of Spider-Man, The Hulk is a dark score filled witth exotic sounds that actually capture the filmakers vision and provide an interesting listening experience for the listener. I gave this score 3 stars not because its bad, but because its not to my personal taste, and I would not necessarily recommend it. However, if you a collector of Danny Elfman music or super-hero scores, then feel no guilt when you purchase this unique score.

5 out of 5 stars Elfman did it again.......2004-08-20

I Have To admit The soundtrack is alot better than the movie. It is good to listen to. This might be one of his lighter superhero soundtrack scores i heard compare to batman, batman returns & batman Forever. hey the big green guy shouldn't get left out. One thing is to bad they did put the original theme in it like they did for spider-man. that woul of made a great eddition. Set me free was a good song. the only lyeric song in it. so you can't say it's really elfman's cd. Nice work Elfman keep it up. Hope he does one for the sequal.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music that Leaves You Begging for More.......2004-08-16

My only problem with the Hulk score is that there doesn't seem to be enough of it. That isn't Danny Elfman's fault, but the movie didn't leave a great many opportunities for him to flesh out the score. That said, what's here is amazing.

The main theme is suprising. One would expect something loud and clamoring with brass for a character like the Hulk, and while the music does get that way at times, the Hulk's melody is actually a steady, soft melody that resonates with wonder. It almost feels like what you'd hear when looking at DNA, molecules, and whatever else would need to be involved in the Hulk's origin. In the background there is a low, appropriately grand brass.

The score uses this theme to different heights throughout, along with fast-paced drums and occasional synth instruments. The most memorable tune outside of the main theme is a Middle Eastern choral section in the second half of the score, emoting the desolation of a solitary creature like the Hulk (and used for the desert backdrop seen in the movie.)

The finale varies the theme, making it granduer, because in it's simple 12 notes, a score for a movie about science fiction makes it seem like a score for a movie about magic. It peaks curiosity, majesty, and even innocence, and then turns into the backdrop for what the movie entails as a climactic battle.

Danny Elfman has been given a large responsibility among composers. He's had to tackle the objective of composing unique themes for three different well-loved super-heroes: Batman, Spider-man, and now the Incredible Hulk. And because he is such an excellent composer, the Hulk can join these other fine scores, and I can only hope Elfman is brought back for the sequel.

3 out of 5 stars Not Elfman's best, but a solid score nonetheless.......2003-10-10

Seemingly abandoning his more melodic tones for a heavier orchestral vibe, Danny Elfman has churned out another solid film score with The Hulk. Elfman's score was one of the few bright spots of the film; fusing sounds which are very similar to some of his past works with some Middle Eastern-ish tones and electronical blips to create something that isn't very memorable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Elfman's past few scores have either been solid or disappointing; I like his Hulk score more than I did his scores for Spider-Man and Planet of the Apes, but not as much as Sleepy Hollow or Nightmare Before Christmas. The final track on this disc is a song called "Set Me Free" which is performed by Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland and old members of Guns 'N Roses. That track is a nice little extra thrown on the disc, but Elfman's score is the main highlight.

Hulk Hogan sings on this 1995 album featuring Hoan and the Boot Band

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hulkster Rules Wrestling Brotha... but his music is... errr.......2007-04-29

I finally got my hands on this, I've only been looking since about 1995 when it first came out. This came out about the time Hogan signed with WCW, it features his original WCW Theme music on track 2 (American Made) which I think is a pretty cool song. Even tho I'm not American, I still enjoy hearing this song now and then, Real American (Original WWF Theme) has been done to death and it would be cool to hear Hogan use this theme again some day.

As for the rest of this album. It's a mix between Hogan singing, Jimmy Hart and his wife I think.

1. Hulkster's in the House: Kind of cool, and kind of lame. It's a modern sounding rock song with mostly back up singers belting out the words together in a song that starts off ok then kind of gets lame 80's style. But overall one of the better songs of this album.

2. American Made - (WCW theme)

3. Hulkster's Back - Hogan's rap song on this album is kind of funny, lame and amusing. with lyrics like, "check out the 24 inch pythons, baby" "whats up dude, check out the pumps" you just can't help but laugh. It could probably work as an entrance theme for him tho.

4. Wrestling Boot Traveling Band - Jimmy Hart sings a kind of light melodied tune that sounds ok until the chorus, but again, kind of amusing.

5. Bad to the Bone - Jimmy Hart again singing, it's sounds like a late 80's heavy metal song. Reminds me of something on Alice Coopers Constrictor or Raise Your Fist albums.

6. I Want To Be A Hulkamaniac - this song sounds kinda lame, but for some reason it get's stuck in your head. It is catchy.

7. Beach Patrol - this one is just lame, they are the beach patrol prowling for girls and getting into fights over it or something. Must've been something he thought of when doing Thunder In Paradise.

8. Hulk's The One - I think this is the one his wife sings. a 80's pop sound that i tend to skip all the time.

9. Hulkster in Heaven - The world just lost another hulkamaniac and they will tag up again when hulk goes to heaven... i think this tries to be too touchy feely in lyrics, but i just laugh my 24 inch tonsils out.

10. Hulk Rules - all i can say is this song rules nothing. another 80's pop sound, ok, but ya wouldn't crank it up so anyone could hear it. More a guilty pleasure kind of song, much like the whole album!

The album is for the die hard fans who can't get enough Hulkster, but it is also for those who want a laugh about him singing an entire album about himself.

5 out of 5 stars Ingenius, Thought-Provoking.......2007-04-26

Alright, this might be the worst album in the history of music. I mean, it is really, really bad. Yet, as bad as it, I can say honestly that I've probably listened to this album at least 100 times, probably more. Heck, there are times when "I Wanna Be a Hulkamaniac" or "Beach Patrol" pop into my head when I'm sitting at my desk. I've had this cd for 7 or 8 years now, and I still play it on the way to work sometimes. My girlfriend gets super pissed when I toss her U2 cds on the floor of my car, and put this album on. She gets even more pissed when I lip-synch "Hulk's the One" or "Hulkster in Heaven." I know 3 or 4 other people who also bought this album (all at K-Mart, nonetheless), and (like myself) they know every word to every song of this incredibly awful album. This is the ultimate guilty pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down the most important album of the 20th Century!.......2006-05-22

Let's face it. Hulk Hogan has created this generation's Dark Side of the Moon! This amazing album takes you on a roller coaster ride both musically and emotionally. But, just like most great albums, it leaves you wanting more. Here we are ten years later and we still haven't recevied the Hulkster's sophomore effort. He needs to give up wrestling and all that reality show junk and focus on what he is really great at: playing the bass and delivering razor-sharp rap verses. Long live the Hulk!

5 out of 5 stars I just simultaneously orgasmed eight times.......2006-05-02

5 out of 5 stars God Loves Hogan Brother!!!!!.......2006-03-13

Music from the cult 1970s television show, "The Incredible Hulk", starring Bill Bixby as Doctor David Banner, who when provoked turns into the raging green-skinned behemoth played by Lou Ferrigno. Based on the popular Marvel Comics character, the television show, produced by Kenneth Johnston, became a successful hit among viewers, lasting four seasons and spawning three television films. "The Incredible Hulk" was the first science fiction series to win a non-technical Emmy award. Chief to the success of the show was Joe Harnells music, which included his popular Lonely Man theme, which played at the beginning and the end of each episode. 1 out of 5 stars ?????.......2006-10-04

Just listening to these sound clips-I can't believe velvet revolver would release such an album. I can appreciate string quartets...but this is absolutely unbelievable. I wonder what would have made them release this? This is NOT rock at all. And four string instruments are no way going to capture the essence of Contraband. I am just in awe that this type of cd exists. No vocals or guitar or drums...Just a string quartet. This is SO not rock n roll....I HOPE the album that they are releasing soon is not going to end up like this...Talk about the downfall of rock n roll.

4 out of 5 stars can't get enough of it.......2005-08-28

If you're like me, and can't get enough of the original album by Velvet Revolver, I think you'll love this. Each song is well done by the four performers, I actually find myself singing to the songs. I have a 5 disc changer at home, and have the original album in the first position followed by this tribute to Velvet Revolver. My ONLY complaint is that I kinda wished that they had someone play a little percussion for each song (ex: the string quartet tribute to guns n roses). But that's entirely okay. It's easy to make the rythem of each song. In fact, there is an awesome slide performed at the beginning of "Headspace" that I didn't know could be done by a violin. There's a treat at the end of the album, a song called .50 calliber, written by the director of the string quartet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars How AWESOME !!!!!!!.......2005-07-18

This is so freakin' cool! I am a HUGE fan of Velvet Revolver and I play violin in my High School's Ochestra. I would have never thought of a string group even attempting to play Velvet Revolver.
I was searching Velvet Revolver to read some of their reviews for fun, and when I scrolled to the bottom of the screen I saw this CD. I played all of the samples. I was amazed at how well these people played the songs. They sound exactly like Velvet Revolver (except for the obvious fact that they play different instruments)!!!!!!!
I am going to buy this CD as soon as I pay off my debt to my mother for buying Velvet Revolver concert tickets online.

P.S. For anyone that cares, the concert is at Soaring Eagle Casino (Mt. Pleasent,MI) on Aug. 11th.

      ~YOU SHOULD GO~

5 out of 5 stars oh my God... I fell in love as soon as I saw the cover........2006-01-23

Let me tell you something... I love the Hulk. I love every inch of his big green body. When I saw there were not 10 but 14 (count them 14 baby!) songs about one true love I almost had a heartattack in KB Toys. It was like time stopped. I heard nothing in the over crowded store that Saturday night. As the infamous Phil Collins once said: "I heard it in the air that night". I did indeed hear it in the that night, what I heard was "Buy me! Buy me! 2 dollars for the best album on the planet about the best thing on the planet... The Hulk!". I snatched the one and only copy on the shelf there. I managed to get 2 dollars out of my wallet but would of paid atleast 100 for this album. I went up to the counter with my palms sweating. The lady behind the desk rung it up and I ran outta the store with the most sought after treasure since King Tuts tomb. The ectasy when I put the album in was un-real. "Hulk he's the one, he's the one he's the one! Hulks he's the one when you wanna have fun!". Oh I was having fun alright... this was the highlight of my life. I think I can't go on anymore because everything else in life will just be a dissapointment. If anything ever happen to my Hulk CD I don't know what I would do. Anyway... "You('ve) got to cool off" is my fav on the album. Bob Marley has got nothing on this, it just feels like you are in Jamaica. Dark Side of the Moon, Thick as a Brick, Close to the Edge, Foxtrot.... they got nothing on this album. This probably the most progressive album of all time. 1000/5. BUY IT NOW!

          5 out of 5 stars A Child's Hit.......2005-05-11

My preschool son is really into super heroes right now. However, he's not big enough to understand the aggressive violence of the movies or even the cartoons. This CD gives him the chance to enjoy his super hero friends in a nice way. He loves it!! The CD has songs that talk about how to deal with bullies, being mad, and how to play well with friends. I'll admit the singing is kinda corny, it's done in a "Kidz Bop" way. But I'll put up with it to keep my kids happy in the car. The spider-man & friends series of toys, clothes, and home items has really been the best thing that I have seen in a long time. It gives young kids the chance to enjoy the "defenders against the bad guys" yet makes them non-aggressive and all around nice guys. Highly recommended for little ones who like the hulk.

5 out of 5 stars Hulk and his friends really ARE quite the crew!!.......2005-02-22

Well, guess what. I'm an adult too and I bought this cd perfectly aware of the contents because I read the back of the CD and was particularly intrigued by a popular party favorite known as "The Hulk Stomp".
I bring this CD with me everywhere I go. I play it at parties and when hanging with my friends behind Walmart. The song "You've Got To Cool Off" has had an incredible impact on my mood swings. When Spider-girl gets angry and very very mad, she stops and talks to a friend, and then she isn't feeling quite so bad. I do the same.
To the other guy, I hope you didn't pay full price for this CD. I'm actually a teenager who bought it at KB toys for two dollars and do not recommend this for any child regardless of their personality disorder. This entire CD is about how people laugh at the Hulk for being when he's really actually very nice.
          Please.
Don't waste your money on this CD.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time, It's Horrible.......2003-07-28

This CD is the worst thing I ever heard. As A matter of fact I'm junking it the first chance I get. It has a bunch of kids singing. It's geared for 4 year olds or even younger. It's definately a kids CD. I thought it would be like Spider-Man Rock Reflections or Pryde of the X-Men. They put a Spider-Man out as well Don't get that one either!!!!!! I am a adult and made a fatal mistake in getting this. So Warning to all that see this CD.
