Editorial Reviews

The distinctive talents of John Barry are perhaps best-known for largely inventing the musical language of the James Bond series, though the composer has enjoyed a long and successful career scoring a multitude of other films and recording pop and jazz as well. This release marks the debut recording of Barry's often surprising score for Nicolas Roeg's compelling 1971 meditation on cultural contrasts set in the Australian outback. Instead of leaning on the obvious choices of exotic percussion and the authentically aboriginal, Barry has infused the familiar elegance of his orchestral writing with unusual, almost Morricone-esque choral flourishes and used ethnic instrumentation only with great subtlety. The results are a compelling rediscovery, pastoral in their grace and gentle atmospherics. The album's second half is devoted to signature cues from a number of Barry's other overlooked scores, including They Might Be Giants, The Chase, and The Corn Is Green, as well as the lush romanticism of Until September and the brooding, evocative, jazz-tinged Séance on a Wet Afternoon. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful dark spirituality from a great band!.......2006-04-02

For the sake of good music re-release this masterpiece... I've only got a grubby old cassette!

One of my favourite albums by any band from the eighties. I could never figure out why The Fixx were almost completely ignored over here in their native England and United Kingdom. They made some fantastic albums. Most people know them for a few hit singles and the classic album "Reach The Beach", but I feel this relatively unknown album from 1986 is artistically and spiritually stronger and their best.

As usual with The Fixx, there are some great atmospheric, dark, distinctive keyboards that compliment similarly tasteful and accomplished guitar-playing. The vocals from Cy Curnin are passionate and intelligent. The lyrics on this album are outstanding. Soul-searching, politically and spiritually aware, full of joy and appreciation for life, positive and deep explorations of emotional and psychological experience. Brilliant stuff!

To the unitiated, you could possibly place The Fixx in the territory of The Police, In Excess, maybe Duran Duran, eighties Rush, but they had their own distinctive sound and identity. The production from Rupert Hine is first class.

4 out of 5 stars Walkabout vs. Ink?.......2005-12-09

I enjoyed "Phantoms," like the other reviewer, but when it comes to the Fixx I'm always torn between "Walkabout" and "Ink" when picking a favorite. "Ink" was definitely more mainstream than this one; those who enjoyed the Fixx's slightly offbeat, new wave sound in those early "Red Skies" and "Stand or Fall" days will probably prefer this 1986 release. That this is in the "Shame It's Out-of-Print" File is just a flat-out injustice, especially considering that two of the staples of their various Greatest Hits collections appear on this album; "Built For the Future" and "Secret Separation." Added to which, "Read Between the Lines" is a beautifully haunting ballad, one of their very best songs. Until someone gets wise and re-issues this, I'm just gonna have to take darn good care of the 20 year-old CD copy I have.

4 out of 5 stars Spareness and atmospherics.......2005-09-20

Someone knowing once compared this record to the spareness and atmospherics of a Pat Metheny release. Not far wrong. I love the drama of Read between the Lines, the cool burn of Camphor and the swing of Treasure It. Secret Separation is The Fixx at their most romantic and hit #19 in the Billboard charts in 1986. Produced with care and restraint by Rupert Hine, this is The Fixx at their best. Savor it.

5 out of 5 stars Walkabout or Phantoms - which is better?.......2005-08-08

I can never bring myself to decide which of these two Fixx recordings is my favourite. As mentioned before, t'is a shame this CD has never been re-released/remastered. All of the musicianship is amazing, especially that of bassist Dan K. Brown - truly one of the most innovative and unique rock bass players of our time. Much of the music has a bittersweet flavour to it (which I personally love), and the lyrics are always intriguing and suit the mood of the music. With the re-release/remaster of Phantoms a few years back, there is always hope the same will be done with Walkabout.

4 out of 5 stars Built for the future.......2005-05-07

I bought this recording on vinyl in 1986.
When I listened to it then, it didn't strike me as their best work.
Listening to it now, after languishing unplayed,in my collection for 19 years(geeeeez, I feel old!), I'm struck by how good this album is. Not an all-out singles fest that Reach The Beach was, it still captures that quintisential Fixx sound that was established on Shuttered Room. Stand out tracks are Secret Separation and Built for the Future.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic and electric, this duo kicks out another gem.......2007-04-27

It's time for another mix disc from Optimo, which basically means that once again, you will be reminded that the duo has a much cooler record collection than you. Never one to bow to convention, in the past they've slammed together songs from kids choirs and Gang Of Four (How To Kill The DJ [Part 2]) to progressive rock and industrial (last years Psyche Out). Originally only released in Japan, Walkabout has finally hit a larger stage, and fans of the two will again want to go ahead and plop down the money now, because this is yet another solid (and varied) batch of music.

Basically, toss a dart at the board and you'll hit something odd and great here. With everything from post-industrial to minimal house to avant noise and post-punk, Walkabout is just about what you'd expect from the UK-based twosome. After opening with the album-titled track from Throbbing Gristle (a favorite of Optimo it seems), the mix slides right into a great minimal selection that blends tracks from Grungeman and Pan Sonic into six minutes that feel like they belong perfectly together. With a submerged thump and some swirling, but quiet layers of feedback, the former is particularly eerie.

As can be expected, it pretty much goes everywhere from there, with old school beats from Lenny Dee and Nicolai Vorkapich, the bleepy, but gorgeous "Fillertet 2" from Shane Berry, and the washed-out guitar haze of Boris on "My Machine." It livens up even more during the second half, with the buzzing but catchy "Radiation" from Suicide (from their Ric Ocasek-produced second album) and the Smith N Hack Remix of "Moving Like A Train" by Herbert, with horn blasts that get chopped to nuggets and slippery house beat that gets things chugging.

As with all Optimo mixes, most of the joy comes from hearing how they put the sometimes seemingly disparate tracks together in a way that makes sense. Other than a couple WTF transitions, Walkabout again pulls things off with flying colors, ending with the mutant dancefloor of "Manoman" by Black Dice. They're nowhere near as smooth as other DJs, but at this point I don't really think that they care. Instead, Optimo just wants to share some of their eclectic collection with a world in a way that instills body-moving and perhaps a bit of head-scratching. With this seventy-minute plus mix, they've certainly managed to do that again.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2007-01-07

There are some gems on this CD. Most of the music is nondescript when you listen to it; it is much more suited to being the background music of a TV show, of course. In other words, it's not like regular music you get on a regular commercial band's CD. In my opinion, the best songs are the Main Titles, in particular the 5th season.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed it is........2007-01-05

With his compositions Franke shows how much he understands the B5 universe
of JMS. A true epic.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-05

This is a wonderful sound track. Chirstopher Franke catches the mood of the series with his music and it sounds even better when you listen to a recording, away from the episodes. Buy this.

5 out of 5 stars This really is the Best of Babylon 5!.......2001-11-04

Thank you to Christopher Franke and Sonic Images for The Best of Babylon 5! Although I have most of these tracks on other B5 CD's, I really enjoyed this one because of the consistently great music. I would rank this one as excellent, along with my other two favorites, Babylon 5 Volume 2, "Messages from Earth" and the episodic CD, "Sleeping in Light." Two tracks deserve special mention: Track 2 is (I believe) a reworking of music from the album Babylon 5 Volume 1. With the "Battle of the Line" music in the background, Chris Franke adds new ideas to enhance the musical experience. The other notable track is the last one, Track 18 "Bonus Theme." This is a fabulous new track, which I understand was written for the (unfortunately never released) Babylon 5 CD-Rom game. This is six minutes of great music, that cannot be mistaken for anything other than "Babylon 5-style" music. It's a thrilling piece, which alone makes me glad I bought the CD. Let's hope we get the same quality offering with the "Legend of the Rangers" movie soundtrack, which I hope will be released next year.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, inspiring music.......2001-07-17

This relaxing, evocative music is ideal for quiet, contempetive times, massage , or easing into the day. The images that come to mind when listening to the CD are of a fresh spring morning, a world in harmony and balance, peace and contentment. It's got the same quality of gentleness all the way through. The music is contemporary orchestral vs electronic and would appeal to almost anyone. I play this at work - a dental office- and everyone wants to know "what is this great music?!!"

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite "trancey" Australian CDs.......2001-01-17

This CD has been around for a while, but there is a reason that it has such staying power! The songs are a mix of beat-oriented trance-type music with traditional Australian instruments. The tracks all have a nice feel to them and each one is different, yet interesting. One of my favourite cuts is "Rivers of the Soul". Each pice is melodic, often upbeat and almost dancey, but in a smooth kind of way. I play music from this CD often on a Public Radio program in Alaska, and consistently get asked about the source.

As a side, it seems that the dreaded "New Age" music goes through these phases where there is a love affair with some source of World music. Back in 1994, Australian music, and Digiridoos were the thing. There was a lot of questionable music put out that had caterwaulings on the Dig. This is NOT ONE OF THEM! This is a really fine CD. Think of Steve Roach's classic "Dreamtime Return", only with melodies and a beat....

            Album Description

"Off the Path" is Part 1 of a serial rock odyssey entitled "The Walkabout of A. Nexter Niode". It chronicles the journey of a wayfaring rock n'roller - known as "Nexter" - who "plays his six string for change". Nexter decides to "take the trip" when his questions about life are left unanswered by the 'Mainstream' establishment. "Tune out, turn on, take a trip" with Nexter on House of Not's debut album.
