The Austin Powers series was hardly the first to spoof James Bond. At the very height of '60s Bondmania, this sprawling, big-budget parody turned the trick, complete with an all-star cast of multiple, dueling Bonds and a bubbly romp of a musical score by Burt Bacharach. Indeed, this swingin' slice of '60s pop kitsch seems to have inspired much of Mike Myers's own later Powers musical tack. Anchored by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass' jaunty main theme and the Brazilian jazz inflections of Dusty Springfield's sublime interpretation of Bacharach's evergreen "The Look of Love," the collection bounds merrily from blaring orchestral action flourishes through Bacharach's own savory takes on jazz-pop and musical send-ups of everything from vaudeville to international pomp and circumstance. It's a dizzy, lighthearted delight from first track to last. --Jerry McCulley

Great spoof on the James Bond Movies. Woody Allen and Peter Sellers are at their comic best.

5 out of 5 stars CASINO ROYALE.......2007-06-07

In reply to the question from KIRSTEN J. WALSTEDT, I have both CD versions of Varese Sarabande's CASINO ROYALE. Both versions have the same 13 tracks, but the 2nd version has two major improvements over the first: 1. It has far superior audio quality---which justifies buying it even if you already have the 1st version. 2. The 2nd comes with an informative booklet with narrative about the movie and the soundtrack.

Also, I prefer the cd cover of the 1st version which is the original poster art for the movie, so I inserted it into the 2nd version's jewel case---which gives me the best of both worlds.

As for the score itself, I think the Oscar-nominated "The Look of Love" is the best love theme ever written for a film and was wrongly not awarded an Oscar. Mike Myers has said the song inspired him to develop the Austin Powers movies and he pays tribute to the song by using it in his first Austin Powers movie in the hot tub scene with Lotta Fagina.

This 2nd version cd is definitely a must-have for those seeking the absolute best in film music.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite Soundtracks!.......2007-03-08

Burt Bacharach and Hal David are a great songwriting team. Burt writes extremely melodic melodies and Hal David writes memorable, to the point lyrics. Casino Royale is one of my favorite soundtracks because it has catchy, fun songs on it. My favorite track is "The Look Of Love" sung by the sultry voice of Dusty Springfield. It doesnt get any better that this. Listen to the lyrics, then listen to the sexy sax solo near the end of the song. This is a heavy duty make out song. Play it while you're having cocktails with your love partner and you'll be kissing in no time. Everytime I hear that song I think of the scene in the movie with Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress shot in slow motion through a large fish tank. Peter Sellers is one of my favorite comedic actors and Ursula Andress...well, she's unbelievably hot! The title song on the CD is performed by one of my favorite artists Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. This is a fun, uplifting, goodtime soundtrack to a great light hearted James Bond movie with other great actors like Orson Welles and David Niven, directed by John Huston. I also recommend another Burt Bacharach soundtrack CD, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

5 out of 5 stars Burt Bacharach and Herb Albert at their finest.......2007-01-18

This imaginative and fulfulling soundtrack is full of whimiscal but serious music that recalls a magical time. Even though Casino Royal is not a classic bond film, the theme is as memorable as the classic bond theme.

Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director's musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams's return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins's moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer's work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra's "Come Fly with Me," Getz and Gilberto's "Girl from Ipanema," "The Christmas Song" by Nat "King" Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it's Williams who provides Spielberg's masterful imagery with its musical life's blood. --Jerry McCulley

John Williams does it again! This man is the best composer I have ever heard! The music fits the scenes in the movies so unblievably well that you will wonder how one man was creative enough to think of it!

4 out of 5 stars Johnny's "Lost in Soundtrack".......2006-08-25

The opening theme is the coolest ever. It has that jazzy, suspenseful, space-age groove that takes you back to the early 60's era portrayed in the movie.

Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.

First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?

Bingo!(and still very cool)!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix of Jazz and Emotion.......2006-02-20

This is brilliant. You will have this theme ringing in your ears for a month after listening. I have collected around 25 to 30 J. Williams scores. This is wonderful like the rest...

5 out of 5 stars John Williams, Film Scores and Jazz all done to Perfection........2004-10-15

I loved the movie and now the music. I think it is one of the most original soundtracks that John Williams has ever done. The Jazz in this music is so peaceful and lighthearted. This soundtrack should be on any music lovers shelf. In my book, this music is a classic film score.

5 out of 5 stars A Great "Catch".......2004-10-04

Steven Spielberg's 2002 film CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a breezy crime caper movie based on the true-life story of Frank Abagnale, a real "phony" who nevertheless embarked on a three-year spree of writing bum checks adding up to millions during the 1960s. To capture that era's swinging mores, he had his great friend John Williams design one of that composer's quirkiest scores ever--very jazzy and redolent of the scores Henry Mancini devised for the "Pink Panther" films and Stanley Donen's 1963 classic CHARADE.

But for Williams, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was very much a homecoming, as he started out in jazz and even worked quite closely with Mancini early on in Hollywood. The genuine jauntiness and mystery of the film's main musical motifs are balanced by moments of warm but not mushy sentimentality, and hit songs of that period by Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, and Dusty Springfield round out this appealing collection.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was such an offbeat project for a composer and a director known for boldness, but it served as a challenge that Spielberg aced on the screen and Williams aced in his music. It is highly recommended for its sheer audacity in going back to the past and still remaining relevant to today.

5 out of 5 stars James Bond Soundtrack with a New Approach .......2006-11-29

This James Bond soundtrack is different in many ways from the 20 that preceded it. The differences go beyond the fact that the main title song is absent from this album. There is no melody performed in its entirety on any of the tracks with the exception of the James Bond Theme on the final track. This soundtrack is the result of going against the formula. It is a moody work interspersed with outbursts of action scoring interlaced with fragments of the main title and elusive references to the James Bond theme. It is a highly impressionistic work and an important one. This will go do down as one of the most important soundtracks, and perhaps not a very popular one, for being truthful to the job of scoring the film. David Arnold mentioned in some of his commentaries that he has fallen back on the James Bond theme when it seemed appropriate, and quite often, in his three previous Bond scores. He departs from that approach here and scores the measure of the man, a man who solidifies his resolve in the finale of CASINO ROYALE. This soundtrack is exceptional and the more it is played the more layers of its great depth are uncovered.

5 out of 5 stars A Personal and Dark Outstanding James Bond Soundtrack.......2006-11-28

With CASINO ROYALE a very atmospheric score is realized. Once you see the film it all makes sense. David Arnold gives us an unconventional Bond score and a daring soundtrack at that. This soundtrack is very emotionally inspired and frankly is outstanding. This proves that the much despised, in some circles, Eric Serra was in fact out of touch with the director's intent with his GOLDENEYE score. Interestingly CASINO ROYALE has the same director. Here, Arnold delivers what was trying to be achieved musically in GOLDENEYE. I would have liked the Chris Cornell song on this CD, but it was not included upon his wishes from what I have read. Thus, this soundtrack remains David Arnold's crowning achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Brooding and Subtly Powerful James Bond Score.......2006-11-28

This is David Arnold's fourth James Bond soundtrack and perhaps his best to date. One can only appreciate this score after seeing the film. It is brooding and subtly powerful and shrewdly and methodically relies on flirting references to the James Bond Theme and the film's main title song throughout. This is a departure for Arnold's brilliant TOMORROW NEVER DIES score, which fell back on the traditional tried and true sound that John Barry had established and simultaneously brought James Bond up to date with the composer's own style, and his overly techno synthesized score for DIE ANOTHER DAY. There are haunting and pensive passages throughout this rich soundtrack underscoring Bond's complex nature in this film.

Chris Cornell's performance of the main title song is sorely absent from this CD. Initially I did not like this song at all. After seeing the film I found that it really works and gives the film the edge it needs to bring in a new style of Bond movie. The catchy melody is actually very good and the song has a raw drive that works on its own. I think it is the best Bond song since a-ha's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. I am not sure why it is not on the CD. It is very disappointing to have left this song off this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best James Bond Scores ever Composed.......2006-11-28

David Arnold's James Bond film compositions up to now have gradually fallen into an abyss of the mundane. Arnold's DIE ANOTHER DAY was just very weak overall. CASINO ROYALE is a complete about face. With CASINO ROYALE David Arnold provides us with his most innovative Bond score to date. You almost have to forget everything that Arnold has composed for the James Bond series prior to CASINO ROYALE.

He has proven up to now that he can accomplish two elements of a James Bond score. First, he can copy predecessor John Barry's style when using the James Bond theme very effectively if need be. Second, David Arnold has a definite talent for coming up with rousing Bondian themes like "Surrender" on the TOMORROW NEVER DIES soundtrack. "Surrender" was belted out by K.D. Lang but relegated to the end titles in favor of Sheryl Crow's humdrum concoction behind the main titles. "Surrender" was pure Bond but somehow the producers stuck it on the end titles. However, Arnold used the "Surrender" theme throughout the entire score and it was very effective.

Arnold innovatively uses that same approach on this soundtrack but with much more subtlety. He gives us both THE JAMES BOND THEME and the MAIN TITLE to CASINO ROYALE in piecemeal fashion. If you examine the soundtrack to THUNDERBALL you will hear that John Barry used almost the same approach. You really do not get much of THE JAMES BOND THEME throughout the THUNDERBALL soundtrack if you listen to it. In fact, you get the entire THE JAMES BOND THEME on this soundtrack on the last track of the album! If you listen to the soundtracks to GOLDFINGER, THUNDERBALL, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER you get good background music, which are outstanding scores. That's what you get here. CASINO ROYALE is one of the best James Bond scores ever composed.

Unfortunately the Chris Cornell's main title song is not included. It is a very good theme that redefines for the cinema what drives James Bond. It does not sound like a Bond song at all, but it truly does work for the movie. I found the omission of that song to be very disappointing. I am really upset that it is not on this soundtrack CD.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Soundtrack Grows on You.......2006-11-28

This is one of the best Bond soundtracks of all time. The themes, moody sequences, action cues are all scored with great emotional energy. This is something that was lacking in previous Bond soundtracks. You have to listen to this album in sequence to feel the energy that builds slowly and methodically. This is a great soundtrack that gets better every time you listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars What's the difference between this one and the other cover?.......2006-12-20

Hey, can anyone tell me the difference between this release and the one with the alternate cover that is only available second hand? Are the tracks all the same? Thanks.
