1 out of 5 stars Really Bad Sound Quality.......2006-07-05

I bought this expensive CD for the same reason you are looking at it, to get Raise a Little Hell on CD. Let me tell you straight up that this CD sounds really, really bad. I read the previous review regarding the sound quality and asked myself, "How bad can it really be?" Its so bad, I threw it away. Now that's bad. I don't know if any of the other CDs are any better, but don't buy this one, you will be throwing 20 bills out the window.

2 out of 5 stars Classic Canuck pop rockers deserve better than this.......2006-02-11

Trooper was one of Canada's best 1970s pop rock bands. Influenced by Guess Who/BTO founder Randy Bachman (he produced the Vancouver quintet's first four albums), Trooper had a dozen top 20 hits north of the border between 1975 and '80. The band is still together, with lead vocalist Ra McGuire and guitarist Brian Smith touring around the country.

The question is, why has MCA (the label that released 7 of Trooper's 9 studio albums) not given the band its due with a decent compilation? Hot Shots was released right after the fourth album, so it's missing a huge part of the the group's history. Not only that, Hot Shots contains only 12 songs and 45 minutes -- far less than an average CD can hold. Finally, this cd has *terrible* sound quality, as if it was mastered from a beat-up 8-track tape.

Shame on MCA for spitting on Trooper's catalogue! Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. The label still hasn't released all the studio albums on CD.

5 out of 5 stars awesome classic album.......2003-04-16

This album brings back fond memories of my high school days. Who could forget The Boys in the bright white sports car? All of the girls wanted a boy in a white car when that album came out. They were H.O.T.

5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2002-10-31

great trooper cd i know the lead singers son connor he is a cool guy and i met the lead singer for trooper they live in vancouver bc

4 out of 5 stars Almost an ideal Trooper compilation.......2002-06-24

This would be the perfect Trooper compilation, except for one glaring omission: "3 Dressed Up as a 9" was one of Trooper's best tunes, yet it was, for inexplicable reasons, not included. But all the rest are here: "The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car," "General Hand Grenade," and "Raise a Little Hell" being the most outstanding cuts. "Raise a Little Hell" ranks below Alice Cooper's "School's Out" but rivals Prism's "Young and Restless" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not gonna Take Take It" as a teen rock anthem.

My father is a musician. He recalled seeing Hoosier Hotshots in films. He once shared with me that he would like to hear their music again. I gave this music compilation to him as a gift. It made him happy to hear these songs again! It meant a lot to us that he could hear them again! Thanks!

Hot Shots II continues the Beta Band's play with epileptic beats and creepy melodies as they again rearrange a record collection stocked with Pink Floyd, Talk Talk, the Beatles, and the full Astralwerks catalog. A clipped toy piano inspires a shiver on "Al Sharp" while the swirling synth of "Eclipse" recalls Brian Eno's contribution to the Trainspotting soundtrack (which the Beta Band would have dominated were the movie made two years later). The album's deep-bass sounds and obvious craft are arresting, but attempts at the band's cleverness or playfulness expose seams that would best remain hidden. The lyrics of "Eclipse" falter through a satirical allegory of politics, concluding with "the people with the answers," "the people with the questions," and "the people with the books" sitting down to "smoke a pizza pie." While almost every song contains layers of crackling vinyl, laser, or toy-piano effects, it's only in the closing hip-hop version of Harry Nilsson's "One" that the sounds neatly meld. Newcomers to the Beta Band should start with The Three E.P.'s, but old fans will find Hot Shots II a better second full-length than 1999's self-titled release. --Sarah Sternau

Album Description

Hot Shots II is the quartet's most accomplished work: folksy, futuristic, dubbed-out atmospherics and off-kilter pop. Think Beck meets Lee Perry meets Pink Floyd meets RZA meets Beatles. This U.S. version features an exclusive track. 11 tracks. 2001 release.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not groundbreaking but good nonetheless.......2005-12-15

If you mix some mellow Radio Head bits, a dash of Portis Head, a dollop of Pink Floyd and sprinkle liberally with spacy loops, vinyl noise and dub-atmosphere, voila, you have Hot Shots II. This was the first CD I heard from the Beta Band and while it didn't immediately grab me, I kept comming back to it. The musics subtlties and gentle electronica reward repeated listenings.

5 out of 5 stars An imperfect but sorely unheralded masterpiece.......2005-01-23

Ignore the cheeky title which both plays on the band's frustrated potential and pays homage to a so-so Zucker-Abrams comedy. Ignore that, because I think the first half of this record is the best, most fully realized concept album of the past decade... and I don't even know if it's supposed to be a concept album. But it is complicated, addictive, beautifully melancholy and each song meshes perfectly with the one in front of and behind it (only two songs, the last two tracks, "Eclipse" and "Won" don't measure up to the standards of the rest of the material but everything else is primo).

Imagine a blend of Portishead, early Pink Floyd and, oddly enough, the Alan Parsons project and that's what this is. It also functions as a soundtrack to both heartbreak and the first rush of being in love; and those dual-roles are, of course, what the best pop music does.

4 out of 5 stars The chill-out Beta Band album?.......2004-07-20

I picked up Hot Shots II shortly after I got ahold of the Beta Band's new album Heroes to Zeros, even though I was already familiar with several of the tracks. As the follow-up up to their much-maligned (even by the band itself) first album, Hot Shots II was generally regarded as a more polished and deliberate effort than its predecessor. While the record is certainly better than most of the trash out there today, I would say that it suffers from two weaknesses in the end. The first is its uneven quality; Squares is perhaps my favorite Beta Band song, but Eclipse is either a satire I don't get or simply a silly song with bad lyrics. The final track, a cover of One is the Loneliest Number, also sounds pretty out of place and probably should have been left off the album entirely. Another potential weakness is the fact that the album seems to find its sonic range early on and sticks with it to the end. Upon first listen, many of the songs sound fairly similar to each other. After a couple more listens you begin to appreciate the depth and subtlety of the music, but the fact remains that most of the tracks are assembled from the same combination of relaxed vocals, looped melodies, and spacy electronic effects. Those looking for more spontaneity and variety may want to check out the Three EPs or Heroes to Zeros first. If you're in the mood for some laid-back music with a touch of electronic psychedelia, though, Hot Shots II is a sure bet.

4 out of 5 stars Superb.......2003-11-25

I stumbled across the video for "Squares," and after I heard the song, I took a chance and bought the cd. Overall, the cd is nonetheless, great. It's the type of cd you want to relax to, very slow and melodic with a twist of electronic. What can I say, I love it. I also saw Beta band live in Detroit when they were promoting the cd and they put on a fantastic show which made the cd that much more better.

5 out of 5 stars Hip as can be........2003-11-13

This album could not have been any better. I have got to say that i love it completely. I even dig that groovy little bonus track at the end. This is Beta speaking, OVER AND OUT...

The late Roland Alphonso, who died in 1998, made his reputation as a ska sax player, and his instrumental work was a vital ingredient to that era. But his style went beyond the limitations of any genre, whether from the kitschy cover of the James Bond theme, "From Russia with Love," where he smoothed over the jerkiness of the beat with his mellifluous tone, to "Jah Shakey," where his breathy introduction echoes jazzman Lester Young. The 20 tracks here range from pre-ska boogie all the way to the early days of reggae, with heavy emphasis on Alphonso's days with the influential Skatalites and their successors, the Soul Brothers. But all put a very clear focus on Alphonso's inventive playing. Give him the chance to solo and he could produce the unexpected, always making the song more than it was before, and pushing things in a slightly different direction. An album like this shows why he's so deeply revered. --Chris Nickson

3 out of 5 stars Fun group but limited.......2006-08-24

I got turned on to the Hoosier Hot Shots when I heard their version of "Breezin' along with the breeze." It is a novel take on that oldie. I also saw a few videos of them performing and they were visually as playful as their music sounded. Here's the problem: they had some good ideas (slide whistle, hot rhythm guitar, good harmonies) but they only had a few good ideas and they used the same instrumentations in song after song after song with little variation. You really only need one Hoosier Hot Shots album in your collection - four is too much of the same old same old. By the time this box set was finished, I never wanted to hear them again. Too much of the same formula.
A great group of midwestern guys, I'm sure. But I have had enough slide whistle to last me a while.

4 out of 5 stars Superb Collection of HOOSIER HOT SHOTS.......2006-03-13

Proper did an awesome job with this boxed set. 4 CD's crammed to the brim with tracks, all in a very neat boxed set with a 35-page booklet featuring tons of info and photos - all for under $25!! If this same set was offered from the Bear Family label, it would cost just under $100. If you are even looking at this collection, then chances are you like this kind of old hillbilly music, and this one will not disappoint. The remastered songs sound great. Hoosier Hot Shots can best be described as more upbeat than Sons of The Pioneers and cornier than The Prairie Ramblers . They use lots of whistles, kazoos and other goofy sound effects in just about every song so this might be a little bit grating if you try to listen to too many tracks in a row. But the songs really are fun, catchy and will put you in a good mood!

5 out of 5 stars Very upbeat. Spike Jones with good taste. .......2006-01-08

Very good upbeat material. I use it regularly to cheer me up. I like them better than Spike Jones, usually more subtle and a lot more tasteful. Very fine musicians (like Homer and Jethro). If you like this, get "America's Song Butchers" by Homer and Jethro. There is an online museum at http://www.hoosierhotshots.com

4 out of 5 stars Makes you smile.......2005-04-18

When you hear this funny, goofy band, recordings from 1934 thru 1947, it makes you smile. You almost can't help laughing. It is very infectious good humor. This collection contains 100 of their good songs for a very reasonable price. This 100 songs chronicles their lives & career (booklet included) and includes at the end 11 songs recorded post-WW2 that seem more downbeat, sad. This seems to me the best value of their different collections available today. Definitive collection. Recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Proper does a great job!!.......2004-09-30

I love this label! Proper records has managed to really give a music fan their money's worth again. Quantity and quality in one package. And cheap too! Everybody Stomp is the definitive Hoosier Hotshots collection. It is such an enjoyable set that it has been on heavy rotation in my cd changer for a month now. With this collection you get great novelties like "From the Indes to the Andes in His Undies" and "Like a Monkey Likes Cocoanuts", but also the great old chestnuts like "Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider" performed in that classic Hotshots style. Are you ready Hezzie? Well, then buy this disc!

4 out of 5 stars Poledouris shows off his talent, making him the hot shot.......2002-10-11

The music in this soundtrack sounds like action film music, not a comedy movie. Nevertheless, Basil Poledouris does a fantastic job in composing the music. The music on the whole has the trademark Poledouris sound with that enormous orchestral sound. The major action cues "Dipsong Fight", "Reel 5", "Colonel Torture", "Gotta Light?", "Compound Escape", and "Saddam Battles/Freedom Fighters" have awesome brass sounds and lots of snare drums, giving it a militaristic sound. There are some quieter cues on the album as well, giving a rest from the bombastic action music. The action music however is what makes the score awesome. "The Flurvian Sea" contains the song "Innamorata" by Harry Warren and Jack Brooks. Its a funny little italian love tune thrown in there to give romance to the Lady and the Tramp scene in the film with the spaghetti noodle slurping. A negative thing about the score, which doesn't give it 5 stars is the very short length (29:51), which can't really be helped because it's so expensive to put out a score recorded in L.A. The music itself is awesome and bombastic, which fans of action music will enjoy every minute of.

5 out of 5 stars Poledouris as his best!.......2001-04-12

I love this soundtrack it's just so great! But it's to short. That's a shame. But if you are a real Basil Poledouris fan I think you should get this soundtrack right away.

It's fair to say that a little slide whistle goes a long way. That said, the Hoosier Hot Shots made a name for themselves by turning that truism on its ear and giving it a good goosing. The group got its start in the 1920s when three of the four stalwart members came together at an Indiana Fair 4H club meeting. By 1933, they'd parlayed their brand of what now might be considered whoopee-cushion Western swing into a featured spot on the popular National Barn Dance radio show. A recording group from 1934 to 1942, they eventually moved over to film work and, while their popularity faded in the '50s, they remained a going concern until 1992, when founding member Gabe Ward died at age 87. Are You Ready, Hezzie? (the title comes from the quartet's catch phrase) offers 25 novelty tunes from the fellas; titles like "The Coat and Pants Do All the Work and the Vest Gets All the Gravy," "I Like Bananas Because They Have No Bones," and "When You Wore a Tulip and I Wore a Big Red Rose" say it all. If you have a taste for spirited, well-played cornball novelty numbers, it's tough to beat the Hot Shots. And you have to love an anthology that prompts the complaint: "What, no 'From the Indies to the Andies in His Undies'?" --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Slide Whistle Heaven.......2002-04-19

I can remember being a little kid and hearing my father play this record REALLY loud. It annoyed my mother and whoever else happened to be in the house to no end, but it's still a great source of fun and enjoyment for my dad and I. The Hoosier Hot Shots grew on me like mold on stale bread. I was thrilled to finally find a copy on CD as my dad's old record was getting worn out. The music is great, and a true representation of the later music it inspired. Songs like "I like bananas (because they have no bones)" will always have a special place in my heart. This CD is a lot of fun, and the music is great.

5 out of 5 stars Predecessor of Spike Jones and Homer and Jethro.......2001-10-01

Very very good up-beat material. Using it to cheer me up during the awful weeks just passed. Reply to person who complained about the large amount of slide whistle -- these songs were elements of a variety show. As with any album which has many selections from one artist, you can't listen to it in one sitting! My only quibble -- these are transcriptions for radio use and not the actual 78's. Very fine musicians (like Homer and Jethro). I like them better than Spike Jones -- usually more subtle. If you like this, get "America's Song Butchers" by H&J. More info on them at hezzie.com

5 out of 5 stars Hezzie is the MAN.......2000-03-08

I remember waking to the sound of that silly slide whistle when I was 5 years old. My dad loved all forms of music and I am DAMN glad of it. I wondered, what in the world is this silliness. But it really grew on me. Looking back, it is one of my fondest memories. This combination of schmaltz and "schwinggg" and kitsch is just magical. The only two things missing that would make this CD the perfect representation of the HHS, are the intro where Gabe asks the real question "ARE YOU REDDY HEZZIE?" and the song "Them Hillbillies Are Mountain Williams Now" which no doubt inspired the entire BEVERLY HILLBILLIES TV show.

        This is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars The Jascha Heifetz of the Slide Whistle and a darn good band.......2000-02-05

Hezzie Trietsch! A name to conjure with, to stir the blood and set the pulse (and the feet) a-dancing. I cut my teeth on the slide whistle, and Hezzie was my idol. Probably THE most underrated toy-instrument virtuoso of the century. I'm glad to know others adore him, too! Hezzie was a dead-game sport--any time, day or night, when the call came, Hezzie was READY. Was the world ready for Hezzie? Perhaps it is now.

5 out of 5 stars Rad, awesome, terrific!.......1998-12-27

This CD changed my life. The Hoosier Hot Shots were the pre-cursors to Spike Jones, and if you are a fan of his and haven't heard them yet, you are missing out!
