Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

CANCAO DO MAR IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE CD.......2007-04-26
Cancao do Mar (Song of the Sea) by Dulce Pontes is worth the price of the soundtrack, it is a very powerful song. Once in a great while a very powerful voice comes along and mesmerizes everyone. Her voice is beautiful, heavenly and haunting all at the same time, simple gorgeous (ear candy). To find the video of the song go to youtube and type either the singer's name or the name of the song, to find out more on the artist go to amazon and find info with the singer's name.
Worth it for that one song.......2005-08-11
If you are haunted by that one song, Cancao Do Mar, performed by Dulce Pontes, and wondering "should I buy this CD?" Yes.
Other versions of that song performed by other artists (like Sarah Brightman), don't begin to capture the power you hear on the soundtrack. It also isn't available from online music sources, like Napster, and I couldn't find it on any Dulce Pontes CD.
So, yes, if you must have that song, this is the place for it. Hit that button.
That song IS on the CD.......2004-11-07
Dulce Pontes' Cancao do Mar is in fact the song some of your are talking about, the one that is played in the Billiards room. Keep listening, the lady starts singing after the intro, which also happens to be played in many other parts of the movie. I'll give it a 4 rating just for this song, it's worth the CD.
Dulce Pontes.......2004-08-27
Actually that song Cancao do mar is on the sound track. The song that is being played in the billiard hall is not on the soundtrack and I don't know anything about it. Does anyone know anything about it?
That song everyone's looking.......2000-08-12
The song that everyone is looking for, which isn't included in this soundtrack despite the fact it is played twice during the movie, is Canção do Mar(Song of the Sea) by Dulce Pontes.

A unique soundtrack for a unique game.......2003-04-21
It's hard to describe what I felt when I listened to this unique album for the first time. A game that earned my attention when it was released in arcades had an original concept with music that fit the atmosphere perfectly, capturing the mood and intensity of each dino-god as they fought for world domination. This album, which was created by Jeanne Parson, the female music composer responisble for working on the sound effects and music for Primal Rage, steps up to the plate and adds in more instruments to bring all ten songs into a new dimension.
The songs are composed in a variety of music styles. Because of this, anyone who listens to this album will at least like one song out of the whole album. Some tracks were made for the rock audience in mind, but other tracks were created with a different attitude. For instance, the song "Himalayas" (Blizzard's theme) kicks off with a beautiful flute melody that will ring in your head for days until the middle section comes in - that's where fans will recall the upbeat intense music that's often heard in Blizzard's stage before completely changing back to the beginning part and ending it there. One would describe that song as something that you would hear in the Jungle Book, like the song "Bare Necessities." Another instance that I can use would be Talon's theme (Jungle theme), which includes a vionlist near the end of the song, bringing that theme into a new place that was not previously discovered in the past.
Besides music, the composer was cool enough to include vocals and a few bits and pieces of dialogue in a few other songs, which is really good. Don't misunderstand though - the music is where things get the listener to whistle those tunes after they hear the entire album for the next days.
If anything, Primal Rage is worth listening to. It may not be the best thing out there, but it is worth a shot for those that enjoyed soundtracks like the Killer Cuts soundtrack, which was included with the game called Killer Instinct. If you can, buy it - it's a rare gem.

Better than the large majority of film scores.......2004-12-02
I'm a big film score fan, but let's face it...most film scores, when all is said and done, have maybe 3-4 really good tracks. The rest is typically either jarring noise meant to fit a moment in the movie or over-development of the main theme. We often get 20 tracks on the same theme when 4-5 were tiring enough.
That's the beginning of where this soundtrack is truly brilliant. Imagine an album that took the best track off of 20 different soundtracks- you might get a soundtrack like this. Because of the varied "worlds" in which the game takes place, the soundtrack presents a number of different styles and themes. Each world has a main theme and a couple of sub-themes that are often just as good as the main theme. It is really difficult to point out any bad tracks. I read another review on this soundtrack elsewhere where a guy said that the weakest tracks were the ones from the 3rd world. I, on the other hand, thought the tracks from the 3rd world were some of the best. But, as I said above, the quality of all the tracks is so consistent and high that it is difficult to pick a loser. As other reviews have stated, you can definitely find your instruments of choice well-represented here- whether you like haunting vocals and choral work, the brass, or a quiet violin- you will find them all here. I never thought that I would tell people that a video game soundtrack had equaled my other 2 favorite scores, but here I am now. Don't miss picking this one up- there can't be that many copies floating around.
Brilliant!!!.......2004-01-27
I've been a film score collector for over 25 years and love fantasy scores! If you're like me you'll find this score for the PS2 game just awesome! As good as any big David Arnold, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith or James Horner score could ever be. Take the risk I did and buy it. You won't regret it it!!!
"large scale symphonic orchestral score ~ PRIMAL".......2003-06-18
Silva America brings the score of a new game from Sony Entertainment "PRIMAL", taking the listener to new heights within the realm of demonic characters as we combat and explore the unknown. Composers Bob & Barn (Andrew Barnabas & Paul Arnold) gave the baton to Nic Raine, who orchestrated & conducted the City of Prague Philharmonic along with a magnificent chorus and concert Master Bohumil Kotmel. The haunting solos of soprano Michaela Srumore, the violin of Bohumil Kotmel, the alto flute of Pavel Becherovka and Jaraslava Eliasova on piano, celeste and harpsichord add even a more brilliant and breathtaking extravaganza in film music. One almost feels you're sitting in a Concert Hall or Large Theater watching a dark classical piece unfold with every musician, chorus and soloist taking you by the hand on a journey through mysterious and bold adventures that keeps you on the edge. Gothic themes "ARELLA'S THEME", with each counterpart as the chorus blends their voices drifting into the universe ~ "RAUM & EMPUSA", gives the orchestra a work out, chorus seems bent challenging every section in the Philharmonic, brass and chorus join weaving a spell over the listener that is majestic.
Hats off to James Fitzpatrick, Reynold da Silva, Bob & Barn for putting together this project for all the "film-score-buff" fans. This is much better than I expected ~ it will proudly sit on my collectible film score section in entertainment surround sound room, gotta love it!

Game or no Game, this rocks.......2003-11-27
I got this CD this week and I'm not a game soundtrack type person but this kicked my ass from the minute I heard it. It makes the game more powerful feeling when you play and the CD is just plan sick otherwise. Good to have even if you don't get into the gaming thing. If you like listening to old school true to it industrial then you should have this.
