I started watching Big O Season 2 on CartoonNetworks Adult Swim. I wondered if they had music for the second season. Come to fing out they did. The Big O Original Sound Score II CD has 23 songs that comes with a book that shows Japanese writing and pictures. I have encluded the song titles and track length of each song in this review.

If you loved the original OST for the Big O, then this album will also be right up your alley. While there is a lack of new material (don't expect a completely different album) the repeated material from the first volume receives different instrumentation an ultimately satisfies rather than disappoints. Your mileage may vary, though, especially since this is an import and they tend to cost more than your typical soundtrack.

However, the new compositions as well as remixes of said compositions range from great to absolutely stunning. I still tend to favor the end of the CD in particular, mostly because I found the WTC Street version of Prayer to be particularly moving, not to mention the stellar arrangement that is Flag. The Grand Central version of And Forever is also quite surprising. You may have mixed feelings about Legend of First Memory since it happens to be a remix involving several themes from Big O mixed together, but it seems to be a track where you either like it or you don't. The transitions can either feel right or completely out of place.

Overall, this certainly is a soundtrack worth owning if you are a fan of Big O. There's just a slight problem though that tends to be typical of most soundtracks, both foreign and domestic. There are a few songs from the series itself that are missing from both soundtracks. Granted, they aren't major pieces and they are usually covered in some way, shape, or form between the two existing ones, but I was looking for a particular piece and have only heard it in the show insofar. That's not to say that the soundtracks aren't worth it, but if you happen to be looking for every single song from the show, just be forewarned that there is a chance that you will only hear it in the series itself.

Aside from that small problem, though, this particular CD is well worth owning.

Toshihiko Sahashi does it again with this second installment of Big-O 2 sound score. The man remixes some of season's 1 sound score while adding a few more tracks to the mix.

1 Sure Promise - Union Square The remix version of the Sure Promise battle theme from season 1. Was used in acts 14,21.

2 Brick Ballades - Houston Street This song was not in the season 1 cd for no reason but this is the saxophone version of Apologize which uses a piano. A great theme.

3 Respect - Upper West Side The opening theme for Big-O 2 instead of the Big-O opening theme from season 1.

4 Apologine - Bleecker Street The theme for before Big O, and Big Venus fuse into one bot. Also used for when Roger realizes his role as Roger Smith in the ending moments of Act 14. When Big-O walks to Big-Fau in Act 21.

5 Painful Dream -When Roger is walking the streets of Paradigm-City that he doen't know.

6 Respect - Lower East Side This was used in Day of the Advent when Roswater told about his evil scheme. This is what I called the Alex Rosewater theme mainly because it matches him during that scene.

7 Distance- This is the sad remix of Apologize when Mrs Fitergerald is picking up the remains of her late husband in Act15. Roger and Angel hanging on the beach in Acts 19-20. Also the perfect moment. When Roger speaks to Dorothy in Act 24.

8 Solitude- Song always remind when they are talking about the past. Flashbacks as what you call. Used various times like in Act 17, The conversatuion that Vera, Angel, Gordon are having in Act 25. Angel finding the basement in act 26.

9 Dreadful- A song used to represent confusion. Used in act 14. When Roger is reading the Newspaper about the comic book Big-O

10 Before Dawn- The tune that Mr McGowan is telling the people about the angel that is coming to save the people who were forsaken for these times. Also when Tammy meets Dorothy at the same scene. Act 16

11 Prayer - 50th Street- A church hymn with people singing proabably used in Act 17.

12 Token- "It's morphing time" The muscial tune that Beck and his goons Dove and T-Bone used to transform to Beck The RX3.

13 Divine- A song that was never used in Big-O.

14 Chain- This was used in "Third Big". When Rosewater was traped in Big Fau.

15 Painful Dream - Spring Street A Remix of Painful Dream when Roger is walking down the night life of Paradigm-City a city that he doesn't know.

16 Prayer - 14th Street- The dragon is coming and this is Leviatan's theme from Act 17. Shcwarvald you are the man.

17 Centenary- The celebration song that the citizens of Paradigm are dancing to in Act 16.

18 Perverse- A short tuned that was used while Beck is talking to Roger in the "Acme Bank" in Act 14.

19 Obfuscate- A great mystery theme used in act 26. Roger sinking to his seeming death inside Big O. Roger walking in the rain without a umbrella in Act 14. The ending mins of Act 24.

20 Prayer - WTC Street The song that R.Instro plays in the church while the people are singing also when Dorothy is leaving the church when the leviatan pics are blowing away in the wind.

21 Flag-

22 And Forever - Grand Central A non-lyrics version of the ending theme. Too bad they never actually used it

23 Regend of First Memory 5:28 (Bonus Track)
Most of season 1 sound scores mix into one giant crossfaded remix.

4 out of 5 stars More beautiful music from The Big O.......2004-09-23

While I had always liked the music to The Big O, I never bought the soundtrack in the past. But when I started watching the second season, something happened to me. As I watched, the music became more and more compelling, hitting all the right notes at all the right moments. Then I heard track 7 from the Big O II soundtrack, and KNEW I had to buy it immediately.


While a lot of the music from the first season was kept largely unchanged, several remixes and new music was created as well.
The first track is an excellent remix of the fight music from the first Big O. The second is the tune that plays while Rodger gives his "City of amnesia..." speech (but with saxaphone instead of piano). The third track is one of the new main themes created for the second season. While I didn't care for it at first, it grows on you. The fourth track is AWESOME!!! It's the music that plays in the first episode when Rodger starts to pull himself together and remembers who and what he is. It's the hero theme. The seveth track (once again) is worth buying the whole CD for (as is the fourth track). It's an orchestral version of the main Big O theme, slow and so sweet it'll break your heart. This can only be described as the "love theme." Awesome!!!! The tenth track is the one that plays while Rodger and Angel have a heart-to-heart while watching the sun rise. VERY GOOD. Most of the other music is either "bad guy" music (like Beck's Theme), or remixes of the mysterious themes from the first Big O. While it isn't quite as inspired as the music from the first Big O soundtrack, it's still pretty good. The rest of the music is the orchestral/choral work that plays at key dramatic moments (with Divine being the standout). To wrap it up we have the Irish sounding piece, the French National Anthem sounding Flag, and a BEAUTIFUL orchestrated version of the ending theme (let's just forget about the bonus track, shall we?).

Overall, I'd say that anyone who bought the first soundtrack to the Big O needs this one too, if only for Tracks 4, 7, 10, and the new ending theme. This is an anime soundtrack done right. Nothing is left out, and we don't have ANY of the same music from the first soundtrack as far as I can tell. Buy both soundtracks if you love a good dramatic score, but buy the first one first.

Toshihiko Sahashi has done it again with this OST.

"Sure Promise (Union Square)" - Phasing percussion with the upbeat "Sure Promise" (off OST1) with electric guitar use at the end.

"Brick Ballades (Houston St.)" - The "Apologize" theme on the sax with piano in the back. This is the tune used when ever Roger gives his monologue. The best song on this album.

"Respect (Upper West Side)" - The theme for Season 2. Follows the other songs, with its upbeat horns, organ, electric guitar.

"Apologize (Bleeker St.)" - Orchestral version of the "Apologize" theme. Very well done.

"Painful Dream" - Lonely little piano tune.

"Respect (Lower East Side)" - Down beat, jazzier use of the "Respect" theme. Breaks into a full orchestra near the end. Includes electric guitar and organ use.

"Distance" - "Apologize" theme on srings.

"Solitude" - Mysterious piano with strings in the back. Orchestra use at the end.

"Dreadful" - "Painful Dream" theme used with a wailing electric guitar. Acoustic guitar and piano use also.

"Before Dawn" - Mellow string and piano song. One of the best on the album.

"Prayer (50th St.)" - Finally the choir is included on the OST. Very beautiful song. One of the best. Organ is used in the back akin to a church.

"Token" - Upbeat orchestra song. Electric guitar is also used. Very catchy.

"Divine" - Pizzicato strings and flute opens to a soft crescendoing song.

"Chain" - Electric and acoustic guitar used. Very lonely song.

"Painful Dream (Spring St.)" - Played on guitar instead of piano. Eerie synthpads back it up.

"Centenrary" - Irish in it sound. Upbeat celebration tune.

"Perverse" - Wacky orchestral tune.

"Obfuscate" - Mysterious little song.

"Prayer (WTC St.) - Different organ is used. Choir is still singing the same tune. Very good.

"Flag" - A very patriotic song. The choir comes in at the end. No wonder it was used for the Union in the show...

"And Forever..." - Instrumental version of the song off OST1. No vocals.

"Legend of the First Memory" - A megamix of OST1. Poorly done, this is the only track I have a problem with.

While this soundscore is a little less diverse than the last one, it is still a welcomed addition. I think OST1 suited the show a little better, but the addition of choral songs and "Brick Ballades" (Which was used in the first season) make this a keeper.

There are some beautifully scored arrangements on both OST1 and OST2. Any classical music fan should check them out, regardless of liking the show.
