Introducing Dorothy Dandridge: An HBO Original Movie Soundtrack [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The life and (tragic) times of nightclub singer and actress Dorothy Dandridge make a fitting subject for a movie, and HBO deserves credit for funding this vehicle starring Halle Berry. The soundtrack for the movie features some of Dandridge's best-loved tunes sung by Wendi Williams and backed by the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra. Together they do a great job of re-creating these timeless jazz vocal numbers. Williams isn't as rough around the edges as the real thing, but a great reissue on Verve can solve that need. As an added bonus, this soundtrack features Elmer Bernstein's score for the movie. Using soft and dreamy strings and piano arrangements, the scoring legend helps to really set this film's bittersweet mood. --Jason Verlinde

One Of The Best Soundtracks.......2005-06-20
Wendi Williams did an excellent job singing as D-D(Dorothy Dandridge)! Even though they don't sound alike in any way, but, she matches Halle Berry's voice. This is a great soundtrack! If you buy this item, you won't be sorry.
Excellent cd for vocal jazz & swing lovers.......2004-04-18
I bought this soundtrack shortly after the "movie" came out in 1999 and I still love it. It's a great cd for anybody who loves vocal jazz & swing music. I'd like to find more cd's made by Wendi Williams, who sings all the vocals on this soundtrack, she has a wonderful voice. The arrangements are also great. This cd is fabulous!
Dorothy Dandridge Soundtrack~.......2002-10-15
Excellent ~ If you saw the Film then you must have this CD~ Also the Dorthy Dandridge CD~ "Dorothy Dandridge"
Lyrics sang by "Dorothy Dandridge". I give it 10 Stars and would love to find more of her music~ She was a Pro Before her own time~
A truly increadable Star/Singer/Woman "Dorothy Dandridge!
Impressive, but..........2001-09-10
I've never seen the movie before, but because I was curious, I tried this CD. With glossy pictures of Halle Berry gracing the cover and the insert, I thought that this soundtrack followed along the lines of "Duets," which featured the actors singing. Instead, it is Wendi Williams who dazzles us with strong vocals that stir up images of a smoky nightclub and the big band glitz and glamour of the 1950s. It seems that they don't give Williams (or Bill Elliot Swing Orchestra or Elmer Bernstein for that matter) enough credit. Still, this is a solid CD. There are great songs to sing and dance along to, both vocal and instrumental. Don't miss "You Do Something to Me" or "Sportsman's Mambo," which makes you want to dance.
Dissapointing!.......2000-12-29
Being an Elmer Bernstein fanatic, I bought this cd. THe thing I didn't know when I bought it was that there is only six minutes of Bernstein's score on it. The rest of the music is fun to listen to, but I really wanted more Bernstein music. I wouldn't buy this cd brand new.
