In 2000, the American Film Institute selected the irreverent cross-dressing farce of director Billy Wilder and writer I.A.L. Diamond as the funniest movie ever made. The film's period-evoking prowess (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis play musicians who witness Chicago's infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre, then disguise themselves as women to flee with an all-girl band featuring Marilyn Monroe) is one of the key elements to its success, with composer Adolph Deutsch's manic pastiche of 20's hot jazz and pop its perfect musical foil. But while the Broadway veteran turned Hollywood Oscar-winner (for his MGM adaptations of Annie Get Your GunSeven Brides For Seven Brothers and Oklahoma) skillfully interpolates period chestnuts like "Down Among the Sherltering Palms" into his vibrant underscore, it's left to Marilyn Monroe to all but steal the show with saucy performances of "Runnin' Wild," "I Wanna Be Loved By You" and "I'm Thru With Love." This edition improves on the sound quality of the surviving source materials and features a concise new history of the film's difficult journey to legend. --Jerry McCulley

When animation had good music.......2005-10-27
Despite the quality of the sound I felt that the music really shone through, that jazzy style that so few people listen to in England since the constant overtaking of decades of worse and worse music into the mainstream charts.
It really made me remember all those old Tom and Jerry animations because the first time I listened to the C.D. it obviously had the full length versions rather than the segments used in the movie but the music was still familiar. It took me about three seconds to connect it to old animation visuals. I'm sure scores from Raymond Scott's albums were also used in T& J.
It's full of really energy expanding pieces on this album, it's defiantely one of those albums you put on when you feel low as a pick-me-up. However, do not play it before bed, you will not sleep!
Very Disappointing.......2002-03-05
I found this release very disappointing.
Like the other reviewers, I found the sound quality awful, but my biggest disappointment was the exclusion of Marilyn's vocal rendition of the song "Some Like It Hot" that was released on a EP {extended play) when the movie first came out. Not only is it very rare {it turns up on some compilation Marilyn CD's}, but its also fun, and definately would have made this already short CD more complete and appealing. This movie soundtrack deserves better.
{Added note: MGM did a superb job of their release of the soundtrack to "The Misfits", finding never before released music from the movie in their vaults and beautifully restoring it to an unbelievable sound quality. Surely they could do the same with "Some Like It Hot".??}
in agreement.......2001-11-13
I'm going to have to totally agree with the other reviewers here on the bad quality of the transfer to compact disc. While I love both the movie and all the music from Some Like it HOt, and I love listening to this, it doesn't sound very clear. It's like listening to a scratchy record.
Maybe it needs to be remastered again? or is the best it can get?
It is very good, a great ensemble of jazzy tunes that all were in the movie including all three of the songs MM sang: Running wild, I'm thru with love, and I wanna be loved by you.
I like how some dialogue is thrown into the mix too. It's a fun soundtrack if you don't mind the quality of the sound.
One of my favorite soundtracks.......2001-06-18
This is an excellent soundtrack album if you love the movie (like I do!) It contains Marilyn Monroe's three musical numbers, incidental background music, and even some dialogue from the film itself. Some people have complained about the sound quality-the sound is in stereo, but it is defintely not wide-range (you can barely hear that there are two channels of sound). Other than this, the quality was pretty good. Remember that this music was recorded for use on the soundtrack of a movie, so they were not going through extra effort to make it sound better to the home listener. I am not sure whether or not the final film was mixed in stereo or not. Perhaps if someone knows for sure, they could mention it in their review (thanks!)
Marilyn walks, and is a hit in some like it hot........2001-03-30
MARILYN IS WONDERFUL IN SOME LIKE IT HOT. her 3 songs are wonderful. It also includes Arthur Miller's (husband at that time) favorite song 'I'm thru with love' which she does beautifully. She does a take off on Betty Boop in the song 'I wanna be loves by you' and ends the song with the 'boop poo pee do' betty boop sign off.Her song Running wild sets the tone for the whole movie. It is not surprising that this song is played as an instrumental in the opening titles. The instrumental 'sugar blues' provides the perfect erotic music background for her entrance into the film walking down the ramp at the train station, while smoke whistles blow from the train. What an entrance..She steals the scene from Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon dressed in drag. Now many years after she died, we can notice what a good actress she was, and a very nice singer in spite of not having a voice like Barbra Streisand. But listen to how she phrases her lyrics. The vhs video has been remastered and now provides a good quality for viewing the film. The CD is fine for listening.Enjoy, enjoy, one of the best comedies ever made, directed by the one and only Billy Wilder. CERTAINES L'AIMENT CHAUD.

Great soundtrack........2006-08-19
The story of this movie was "adopted" for a Jule Styne stage musical (called "Sugar" on Broadway, although the original title was kept for the London production). None of the music from the film was reused, which is a shame. This is one case where Broadway copies Hollywood (badly), rather than the other way around.
The movie was (rather distractingly) filmed in black and white - allegedly to make the "female impersonation" more convincing (probably more a cost cutting exercise). And the sound is really not quite state-of-the-art (of its time) either. I sincerely doubt if we are ever likely to get a better sounding version available than this - there is ultimately a limit to how much recorded sound can be enhanced.
Marilyn Monroe's carefully nurtured "dumb blonde" image tends to conceal the fact that she was a very intelligent actor - and in spite of the limitations of her singing voice, a very good interpreter of a song. Fortunately, the low budget nature of the movie meant that there was no expensive over dubbing of her voice by a professional singer.
Indeed, one of the funniest movies of all time - and the soundtrack makes a great CD to listen to and enjoy in its own right.
not what i expected by varese.......2005-06-08
Well the quality of this cd is a bit better as the zyko edition
of Some like it Hot. I own the record which came out 1976 by United-Artist and i must say even the record is far better as any CD who came out later. so we can hope united artist will may bring it out by themselve once in the future
"Curtis, Lemmon, Monroe, Wilder ~ Adolph Deutsch".......2004-10-02
Varese Records presents the soundtrack to Billy Wilder's classic comedy "Some Like It Hot", featuring Tony Curtis as Joe, Jack Lemmon as Jerry a couple of musicians on the lamb, George Raft as Spats Columbo the mob boss, Pat O'Brien as agent Mulligan and what was one of her best performances Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane lead singer of Sweet Sue's Band ~ but the scene stealer in this film is vaudevillian Joe E. Brown as millionaire Osgood Fielding, who has fallen in love with Daphne (Jack Lemmon in disguise) ~ the score by composer and conductor Adolph Deutsch skillfully captures the times of the late '20s.
Many tunes of the period are outstanding ~ but the fun begins with solos by Miss Monroe, the songs "RUNNIN' WILD", I WANNA BE LOVED BY YOU" and "I'M THRU WITH LOVE", her performances in this film have become legendary, she was at the peak of her career in 1959. Just close your eyes and listen to each cue, you can still see the charm, comedy and the cross-dressing humor that made us laugh then and remains so fresh today...gotta love it!

What a rip off!.......2004-09-21
In the original CD release from Rykodisc, we got music aplenty but sloppy sound quality. In this brand new rerelease under a new label, we get better sound quality but less tracks! ARRGH!!
And as if to add insult to injury, the new cover art is terrible--this does NOT look like Marilyn Monroe is the least! It may seem a slight complaint to some, but I loved the cover art of Rykodisc's release much better.
Looks like we'll all have to wait for the next label to pick this one up to do a better job. Better luck next time, I suppose... hopefully the old saying about three being a charm is correct...
