Not to be confused with the collection Songs Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, this album is Harry Gregson-Williams's instrumental score for the movie. Marking the composer's third collaboration with director Andrew Adamson (after both Shrek flicks), this score also is one of the more mature offerings from Gregson-Williams, best known for his work on family films. The music is lush and assured, if a bit predictable. Indeed, it fits squarely in the current style popular for big epics--even using (on a few tracks) the vocals of Lisbeth Scott, which fall halfway between those of Enya and the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser (both of whom, uncoincidentally, appeared on the Lords of the Rings soundtracks). The CD concludes with four songs, with Gregson-Williams cowriting Scott's "Where." On "Can't Take It In," Imogen Heap's vocal acrobatics eerily recall those of the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan, while Alanis Morissette's "Wunderkind" is an inspirational, almost girl-powerish track written from the point of view of the movie's Lucy. But the best of these songs is "Winter Light" by Tim Finn, four minutes of understated, piano-driven melancholia. Look for it tucked near the very end of the CD. Note that the soundtrack comes also as a two-CD special edition . The second disc is a DVD that includes galleries of film stills and concept art, a featurette about the recordings of the score and a making-of featurette. There's also a segment in which the (mostly) Christian bands involved in the Songs Inspired by... album talk about their involvement in that project. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack.......2007-06-26

I bought this for my wife. My wife, my kids and I all love it.

5 out of 5 stars Sharing with Others.......2007-05-23

This movie was a big success at our home. We saw it at the local theaters and decided to buy it upon release. We also have purchased other copies to give to friends.

We look forward to the future movies of the other 5 books.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of quality.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed the soundtrack immensely, except for the last three songs which have vocals. This is much better than the movie. I just wish they would list the companies would list the musician's that performed the music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant minds.......2007-03-14

This is one of the best soundtrack I've ever listened to.From the serene "Lucy Meets Mr.Tumnus"to the soaring theme found in many of the tracks,Harry-Greggson Williams does a masterful job at creating a magical Narnia.I listened to this nonstop when I first got it,and I still listen to it more than any other soundtrack.
The four(three really, because Winter Light is utterly detestable)songs at the end are reason enough to buy this CD."I Can't Take It In" is brilliant with Imogen Heap's incredible talent."Wunderkind" is so artful and expertly written,it has become one of my favorite songs.
So this soundtrack meets all the requirements for a great soundtrack-great theme, amazing creativity, and stellar songs.

4 out of 5 stars Piano, Vocal and Guitar Music from Narnia.......2007-03-10

This book has eight of the songs from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Some of the songs, such as Evacuating London and Father Christmas, include some fairly advanced musical notation. Evacuating London, Lucy Meets Mr. Tumnus, A Narnia Lullaby and Father Christmas do not include guitar notation. However, this is authentic Narnia music, as composed by Harry Gregson-Williams. The first eight pages consist of colored pictures from the movie. The only thing that would make this music book even better would be inclusion of The Battle, which we are still looking for.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

This reissue originally released in 1997 was on the top American Billboard Charts, ranked number #13...dramantic in every respect "CINEMA CHORAL CLASSICS", featuring the CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS and their leader David Temple (Choir Master), world renown with a strong reputation for hitting the mark everytime...for additional listening pleasure THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC, conducted by Paul Bateman, Kenneth Alwyn and as always Nic Raine these gentleman are the icing on the cake...for additional listening pleasure we have the classical favorite "CARMINA BURANA"(1981-Carl Orff), the dark tale of Camelot...now that's just for openers.

Silva Screen Records takes us on a journey of adventure "CONAN:THE BARBARIAN"(1981-Basil Poledouris), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and resounding singers with brilliant orchestration...then we have two selections from "THE MISSION"(1986-Enno Morricone), beautiful choir blends emotion, enhanced by haunting themes and counter melodies..."THE LION IN WINTER"(1988-John Barry), a favorite among Barry fans, this arrangement and rendition has it all...next we travel with helmet in hand(with horns included) with "THE VIKINGS"(1959-Mario Nascimbene), if it's action you crave, then this Kirk Douglas epic is a real winner, but Nascimbene's score adds color and breaths life into this tale of the Viking God "Odin"...another remake leaps to the screen with "HENRY V"(1989-Patrick Doyle), one can only marvel at Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film, but the music from a solo to full choir gives you goose bumps...the CD is excellent, recorded in Dolby Surround sound is completely mesmerizing and outstanding...orchestration, every intstument, every voice, crystal clear...for all the "film-score-buffs", do not pass this one up...needs to be in your every growing collection (nuff said)...gotta love it!

Hats off to Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine conducting the world renown CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA...plus James Fitzpatrick(album producer)...Reynold da silva(executive producer)...and a special thanks to David Temple(Choir Master) and our favorite-dynamic choir that made all of this possible...THE CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS!

Though perhaps best known for the cool, unsettling detachment of his Bond scores and the lush romantic overtones of Out of Africa and Somewhere in Time, composer John Barry has an impressively broad range. In fact, it was this rousing brass and choral work for Anthony Harvey's 1968 adaptation of James Goldman's play about the rise of England's King Henry II that garnered Barry his second Academy Award. Moving beyond mere costume-drama pomp, Barry's work here effectively bridges the 12th and 19th centuries, its massed voices echoing the Church of England while maintaining a distinctly modern harmonic sensibility, while the orchestral writing echoes the edginess of his Bond work with surprising effectiveness. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Picture perfect (no pun intended).......2006-05-31

From the opening scene, the music is so appropriate for the time and period that it's seamless. Sets the stage for what is to follow which is an amazingly literate screenplay about a fascinating period of time, the rise of the Plantagenet family, and the feuds and conspiracies of this amazing family. Eleanor was quite a female, (a feminist way ahead of her time). A lot of what is shown is accurate (to the best of my reading, allowing for Hollywood license) and can well encourage viewers to seek nonfiction for the truth about the Plantagenets whose reign ended with the death of Richard III (a much maligned Plantaganet).

I love this cd and have worn the lp to death.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Music! Play it often and play it loud.......2006-04-06

I saw the movie when it first came out and fell in love with both the movie and the score. Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn are riveting! And the music is even more riveting.

If you liked Henry V, then try this one. It conjurs 13th century Briton and the Norman inlfluence. "Gai, Gai, Gai" is close to idylic and the processionals will bring you to your feet.

5 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS.......2004-11-24

Rhapsodic and darkly brooding, this classic score is absolutely thrilling. The main theme alone deserved the Oscar, and there are so many enchanting melodies, all lushly orchestrated, throughout this amazing piece of music. Eleanor's Arrival is one of the most beautiful, chant-like compositions ever written for a film -- it is as wonderful to hear as it is to see on screen!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite film music.......2003-11-30

No musical score has remained more influential upon my imagination and emotions than this one. The play (and film adaptation) also remains perhaps my favorite - all things considered. I agree with others who have already commented, that this score is Barry's best, and that is saying alot about the genius of it to evoke powerful emotions: wistful, threatening, angry and even insane: there is that finale, where hope (for eventual triumph) is also vividly felt through the music.

5 out of 5 stars Barry's absolute best work; a masterpiece!.......2001-12-28

John Barry's score for "The Lion In Winter" is without a doubt the absolute apex of all his scores, before or since. The Oscar Award winning score, to keep in context with the nature and time period of the film for which it was comissioned for, combines polyphonic mediaeval plainchants sung in Latin, as well ominous and haunting choral passages mixed with powerful orchestration and signature Barry brass and rhythms. The powerful and memorable main theme is repeated in various forms throughout the score, but is not domineering; the same can be said about the secondary themes. The musical dynamics of the score are astoundingly good. Ominous, emotive, haunting, regal, and beautiful, John Barry's score to "The Lion In Winter" begins strong and ends strong, with nothing short of brilliance in between. A score that stands just as well on its own as it does for its employment in the film. Someone once said that music equals emotion: this score bares that out.

Highly, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-01-27

The soundtrack is absolutely astounding. You can listen to it for hours without growing tired of it. It reminds you that we each need to always strive to attain our best and watch out for the welfare of thers.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for children.......2006-08-20

This is wonderful story-telling, engaging without being cloying, a fantasy with realistic principles, not to mention relationships. The four Pevensie children are no strangers to anyone who has ever cared for or even known children, a true family, with its ups and downs, love and squabbles, falling and forgiveness, and we are invited to share their adventures in joining the fight led by a regal and courageous lion named Aslan, against a witch queen who has held the land in fear and cold for decades. All is informed by a lovely, haunting, and often stirring soundtrack, which is included individually, and which could quite possibly stand on its own without having accompanied a movie. Both are so well done that we become unaware that we are being ushered into a Narnian world, coursing through storybook adventure, a tribute to the author and also to all those whose hard work and dedication combined to make an experience and a world so winning and complete as to be well worth revisiting, as often as one wishes.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack DVD vs. Second movie DVD.......2006-07-22

This is what I would call a good soundtrack. I am not writing this review for the music of the Narnia soundtrack, because there are enough of these already. You should be able to form an opinion of it by reading other people's reviews. But, I do REALLY like it! There was some information that I needed, when I was buying my soundtrack, regarding which edition of soundtrack I should get. If I had the information I needed, I probably would not have bought the special edition soundtrack I ended up getting. I got it because I found a good deal, on Amazon actually, and I wanted to compare the DVD to the second DVD in the special edition movie, which we own. So...this is the information I needed, a comparison.

Soundtrack DVD

1. Film art gallery is good, if you like film art, although I thought it was boring.
2. Concept art gallery I find boring so to be honest I didn't watch it on this DVD since I looked at it in the book.
3. Behind the Magic of Narnia is all on the website except an interview with the composer which was quite good.
4. Theatrical trailer is on the website. You can actually get more trailers on the website for free.
5. Music inspired by the film I believe is all on the website also.

Movie DVD

1. Chronicles of a director was very funny and informative and fascinating.
2. The children's magical journey was also hilarious and you really get to know the children's personalities.
3. C.S. Lewis: From one man's mind was an interesting movie bio on C.S. Lewis.
4. Cinematic Storyteller's is an extremely interesting view of the movie from eight different minds; this also has an interview with the composer which is different from the Soundtrack DVD and very good.
5. Creating creatures was a FACSINATING look at the world of creatures both costume and CGI (computer generated images).
6. Anatomy of a scene: the melting river is all interesting ...

If you haven't guessed already, I could go on for a long time because there is much more but in the interest of brevity I will wrap it up. I enjoyed the movie DVD much more than the soundtrack DVD. The special edition soundtrack is not worth your money new. I would spend my money on the movie and not the extra DVD with the soundtrack although I love the soundtrack itself and think it is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

5 out of 5 stars "Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07

When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

3 out of 5 stars So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

2 out of 5 stars Just not the same.......2003-01-04

If you're into classical music, you know how different the same symphony performed by two different conductors and orchestras can sound. Same here. If you really love this score like I do, I think you'll be disappointed in the difference in sound compared to the original. I'd give this a higher rating if it was the only version available. But since the original is available on CD, there's no reason to buy this imposter. There's only 5 minutes more from Lion in Winter, and the mini-Mary score is nothing special.

A well deserved Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1968, as well as the Anthony Asquith Award for Original film Music (British Academy Award) with the unmistakable style of John Barry...getting his break with "Dr. No"(1962), the debut of James Bond...following up with such scores ~ "From Russia With Love"(1963)..."Goldfinger"(1964)..."Seance On A Wet Afternoon"(1964)..."Zulu"(1964)(one of my favorite Barry Scores)..."King Rat"(1965)..."The Ipcress File"(1965)..."The Knack and How To Get It"(1965)..."Thunderball"(1965)..."Born Free"(1966)..."The Quiller Memorandum"(1966)..."You Only Live Twice"(1967)..."Midnight Cowboy"(1969)..."On Her Majesty's Secret Service"(1969), and that's just the '60s...but you know the rest of the story!

Director Anthony Harvey gives the audience everything with his guiding hand, with outstanding performances from Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn(Oscar Winner), with Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, John Castle and Nigel Terry as the brilliant supporting cast, in what has become a masterpiece in film-making.

Silva presents two classic Barry scores ~ "THE LION IN WINTER"(1968) and "MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS"(1971), featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic with conductor Nic Raine, who seems to know every move and note that John Barry ever composed...exquiste choral work by the Crouch End Festival chorus conducted by David Temple...from the opening main title through every cue...recorded in "Dolby Surround" with new technology of "HDCD" and a new Digital Recording of the complete score, sounding better than ever for "film-score-buffs"...this was a winner with the Academy and fans in 1968, and you know what...IT STILL IS!

5 out of 5 stars Endearing Collection from John Barry's Early Films.......2006-09-28

This is a very good collection of John Barry's film music from the 1960's. Besides the various James Bond film themes, impressive selections such as THE IPCRESS FILE, KING RAT and THE CHASE are included. "Wednesday's Child" from the QUILLER MEMORANDUM is very good. There is not a bad cut in the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC BY A GREAT COMPOSER.......2003-11-10

IF THIS CD ONLY HAD "WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD", IT WOULD BE WORTH THE PRICE AND THEN SOME. I FIRST HEARD THIS ARRANGEMENT IN 1981 ON AN EASY LISTENING RADIO STATION IN CHICAGO AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. THERE ARE OTHER GOOD SONGS AS WELL ON THIS CD LIKE "FUN CITY", "WEDNESDAY'S CHILD", AND "NEXT TIME".

5 out of 5 stars INVENTIVENESS FOR ORCHESTRAL COLORS, INFLECTIONS, RHYTHMS.......1998-06-25

After searching my music collection for my very favorite albums, I tried to locate the same artists at [Amazon.Com]. I really liked "The Living Daylights" a 007 James Bond thriller produced by John Barry (Warner Brothers 1987). Has anyone heard of John Barry? Evidently he is a quiet and secluded man but he has composed music for quite a few box office film hits, some in the James Bond series. All the tracks on this album are good but I especially liked Thunderball (Track 11) and Goldfinger (Track 17). John Barry is very versatile in his music style but several have that "suspense" feel and bold, base, brass leads. The insert describes his music as "inventiveness for orchestral colors and infectious rhythms; his gift for melody majestically sweeping or deceptively simple". I agree. You'll like this album - most likely all of the 17 tracks with 53 minutes of play.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry revisits his classic themes circa 1968.......1998-05-20

This collection is culled from John Barry's brief association with Columbia records in the sixties. Dull cover art betrays the fact that this is the best John Barry compilation for your money. "The James Bond Theme" has never sounded better, and Barry turns his rather stoic theme for "The Lion in Winter" into a intensive workout for jazz organ. Other hard to find anywhere else themes include "The Ipcress File," "The Quiller Memorandum," and "The Wrong Box." The sixties really did swing!
