Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In his score for the The Rainmaker, soundtrack legend Elmer Bernstein didn't attempt to recreate the music of the deep South. Quite the opposite, actually--he went urban. Heavy on the Hammond B-3 organ, Bernstein's score combines big band orchestrations with smoky jazz to good effect. At times, this score sounds a bit like another Bernstein's attempt at jazz... Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Still, there's a lot here to keep soundtrack buffs interested. "Sharks" is a catchy, noir-inspired theme. There are cute, plaintive-sounding cues ("Kelly," "The Trial Ends"), playful melodies ("Shenanigans"), and dark, angry numbers ("The Fight"). In short, it's another solid soundtrack from Bernstein. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars The Flower Kings - Shorter To The Point Songs.......2007-03-12

I've seen this album take a lot of heat from Flower Kings fans over the years. It is generally rated as one of their lesser albums by a lot of people, but I have always thought it was one of the band's best. It is somewhat different from what Flower Kings fans may have come to expect. It is a single disc, and the songs are generally shorter. There are three songs topping the 10 minute mark, but for The Flower Kings that is not considered long. The band takes a slightly heavier approach on this one as well, even flirting with progressive metal in songs like "Sword Of God". In lesser hands this might not work, but The Flower Kings are talented enough to pull off just about any musical style there is. Does this album take the band in a more commercial direction, as it is often accused? Yes it does, but pairing the material down to shorter less padded songs really seems to work this time out. I think this is some of the band's best songwriting proving that sometimes less is more. Another thing that I like about this disc is that Roine really lets Hasse Froburg loose on lead vocals. Stolt still sings lead on some of the album, but Froburg is featured on lead vox more here than on their previous discs making this vocally one of the band's best. Stolt's voice is unique, but Froberg has the bigger range of the two. Highlights of the album include the opening track "Last Minute On Earth", "The Rainmaker", "City Of Angles", "Elaine", the previously mentioned metallic "Sword Of God", the finale "Serious Dreamers" with it's trippy Stolt music and lyrics. You won't find any 30 minute long epics on this album, but the diminutive, more succinct direction of most of these tracks for me, provide a winning formula for this release.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, not their greatest.......2007-01-30

Another good work from the Flower Kings, no masterpieces here but very good album. My only complaint is for track number six "Elaine" is by far the worst song ever wrote by Mr. Stolt. I forgive him for all the great work he has done in the past and for the upcoming other must have albums and masterpieces to come. I simply hate this song, the next one is not very good also "Thru the walls"
The remaning tracks are superb ! Special mention for "Last minute on Earth", "Road to sanctuary" and the hard rock "Sword of God"
Good ambiance with "City of Angels" and "Serious Dreamers" Recommanded !

4 out of 5 stars Excellent as usual!.......2005-08-21

Another stellar performance by The Flower Kings. The only reason I didn't give this album 5 stars is that nothing can outperform their "Space Revolver" album (one of the best prog albums of all time). Standad jewel case edition.

4 out of 5 stars AFTER FURTHER REVIEW..........2005-05-16

I LISTENED TO THIS RECENTLY AFTER NOT LISTENING TO IT FOR QUITE AWHILE. I REMEMBER THAT I DIDN'T LIKE IT AT FIRST. BUT NOW I FIND I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT. I KNOW I'M KIND OF FICKLE BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT THE KINGS DEMAND PATIENCE BECAUSE THEIR STYLE VARIES QUITE OFTEN. I HAVE GROWN TO APPRECIATE THIS WITH TIME. SOME GREAT ALL OUT ROCKERS ON THIS ONE AND OFCOURSE PROG GEMS. PEBOZO CAN GO ON LIVING IN THE DARK. THE REST OF YOU SHOULD DISCOVER OR REDISCOVER THE FLOWER KINGS.

5 out of 5 stars Are we listening to the same CD?.......2004-10-30

I know that tastes differ widely-even among rabid FK fans, but its hard to imagine that we are listening to the same CD after reading some of these reviews. I guess I can partly understand the feast or famine response to this album-is it because it actually is less quirky and more consistant than all of their others? Yes it is more serious and a little more brooding at times-but these are incredibly intricate and tightly played songs-even the straight forward "World without a Heart". "Thru the Walls","Sword of God", and"Serious Dreamers". And how can you not realize that "Road to Sanctuary" is probably the most beautifully crafted 10-15 min. mini-epic they've ever recorded! Featuring a haunting accoustic mid-section,a beautiful yet powerful bass line by Jonas Reingold(at the end)and powerful lyrics and singing throughout by Roine Stolt."Last Minute on Earth" is not far behind-and one of their best openers-and even though it rocks harder than most FK songs-they pull it off brilliantly. "City of Angels" is another under-rated mini epic reminiscient of "Back in the World of Adventures". I will admit the instrumentals don't do a whole lot for me and are the weakest links on the CD-but this is still by far the most consistent FK CD out there IMO-and a must for all PROG fans! The FK still reign supreme!

4 out of 5 stars High octane bluegrass music in a live show.......2005-01-07

Playing Time - 55:55 -- The high octane of bluegrass music in a live show has been captured in the "All Star Bluegrass Celebration" produced by legendary Austin City Limits architect Terry Lickona. Available on CD or DVD, the intensity of this genre is seized in this documentation of a show featuring some of the greatest performers in the business. The many moods of bluegrass range from the hard-core traditional to quick-paced contemporary, enchanting gospel to powerful mountain sounds.

Recorded on January 16, 2002 at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium for a PBS broadcast, the All-Star Bluegrass Celebration was a very popular fund-raising special. There is one primary tradeoff to the energy of a live show, and that is the audience applause which can be downright noisy and annoying, especially when it's rendered over a hot break or vocals.

The DVD version contains three bonus tracks. The show was hosted by Ricky Skaggs, and the CD begins with Kentucky Thunder's fiery rendition of the traditional "Shady Grove." A project like this always offers some interesting pairings that bring illustrious guests onto the bluegrass stage. More often associated with country music but clearly having strong bluegrass foundations, stars like Vince Gill , Travis Tritt, Patty Loveless,
and Bruce Hornsby also make appearances. Unfortunately, the set's flow has some problems. For example, following the Del McCoury Band's "Get Down on Your Knees and Pray" with a drum-heavy rendition of Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" is like jumping from a warm bed into a freezing cold lake. While the crowd appreciates the sheer energy of the breakdown with electric guitar, electric bass, and drums, it seems rather odd to transition right back to Patty Loveless' more acoustic rendition of "Daniel Prayed." Later in the set, after Ralph Stanley and Ricky Skaggs play straight-ahead bluegrass, Bruce Hornsby builds his compelling case for bluegrass piano on "Darlin' Corey." Of course, Nickel Creek's "Seven Wonders" pushes the bluegrass envelope even further. The all star finale jam it up on Earl Scruggs' "Lonesome Reuben" and a fitting tribute to the father of bluegrass with Bill Monroe's "Rawhide."

There are no liner notes that try to define bluegrass. It's obvious that producer Terry Likona has chosen to let the music do that for us, and the sideboards are large. With its strongly mainstream commercial sound, the All-Star Bluegrass Celebration raised a great amount of funding for PBS. Projects like this also give us a broad sampling of bluegrass for all tastes. From the sounds of the noisy audience, they clearly loved it. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

4 out of 5 stars Lively disc of bluegrass legends and stars.......2004-12-27

Originally taped live at the legendary Ryman Auditorium, this celebration of Bluegrass' legends and current stars has been a staple of PBS fundraising nights all across the country. Now available on both CD and DVD, the program captures highlights from bluegrass founders Earl Scruggs and Ralph Stanley, legendary players Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and Alison Krauss, and country stars like Patty.

The program provides a good introduction to the riches of Bluegrass, including the hot-picking of Kentucky Thunder and Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley's bone-chilling a capella "O Death," and the generational interconnection of standards like Bill Monroe's "Uncle Pen." The DVD edition adds three tracks to the CD: Earl Scruggs' "Passin' Through," Ralph Stanley's "Rocky Island," and a group finale of "Little Maggie."

Every Song is a keeper. "Tangible Things" is perhaps her best compositition ever recorded. If your a fan and don't have this offering you need to seek it out. I can't give this CD Higher marks, it's that good!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet rarities that any Nixons fan can't go without.......2000-04-12

The Nixons are a great band, and my favorite. This is an ep of their rare songs, so don't expect a full album of new songs. The first song is a live version of "one by one" which originally appeared on their first ep "six" way back in 92. It just shows you the live raw energy that is a nixons live performance. The acoustic version of "sister" is simply amazing. It just amazes me everytime I hear it. You need to get this cd, even if just for that song. "heaven tonight" and "Rocketman" are covers of a Cheap trick and Elton John. Rocketman is by far the better of the two. I hated the elton john version, but love the nixons' stab at it. Heaven tonight just isn't a good song, so they couldn't do too much with it. not altogether bad though. The rest are live versions of songs of Foma and their self titled cd. A great acoustic in studio live version of "Sad sad me" and an electrifying live "happy song." The live version of "passion" is slower than on Foma, and get's kind of tedious. it seems kind of empty without the violins and strings too. not a bad song though. The best songs on here are Sister, rocketman, sad sad me, and happy song, and it's well worth the price just for these 4 songs, not that the other 3 are bad. you even get a hidden track of zac and john doing a radio promo. Interesting. It's definitely worth buying.............so buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Not too bad..........2000-04-08

I got this as a birthday present. It's OK, but I'm not thrilled. The acoustic version of "Sister" and the cover of "Rocketman" are great, but nothing else on it is all that interesting. They have a bunch of their obscure, kind of uninteresting songs, I would have liked to have heard live versions of "Blind", "Fellowship", or even "Baton Rouge". I don't really like the live version of "Passion", the recording is way better. If they were going to cover Cheap Trick, they should have covered "The Flame" instead of "Heaven Tonight", that song rules. "Rocketman" sounds great, though. Puts Elton John to shame, by far. Get this CD for that, but if you want to hear the Nixons at their best, get "Foma".

5 out of 5 stars The greatest and most satisfying release of all times!.......1999-07-18

My name is Davide, but people call me Da. I'm a 19 year old Italian guy who's a major fan of the Nixons. "Scrapbook" is by far the greatest release of all times! Acoustic versions of Sister and Passion really demonstrate and prove how skilled these guys are. This collection of rarities really makes the Nixons stand out as the truly successful band of this generation. My favourite song is "Sad sad me" which is a live version - it shows how good these guys are in concerts! Even though there are only 8 tracks it is still magnificent!!

    4 out of 5 stars "A Great EP from a Great Band".......1999-05-05

My name is The Allmighty Zero and I am from Oklahoma City. I have liked the Nixons since their first album was released. This EP is a pretty good compilation. It includes a cover of Elton John's, "Rocket Man", which was done quite well. This album also includes the much anticipated release of the acoustic "Sister". If you liked Foma and the self titled albums, this is a great buy!

4 out of 5 stars A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06

I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."

Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.

The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.

Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!

      4 out of 5 stars 2179 delivers.......2000-02-01

With 2179, Soak further delves into the real hybrid world of techno and metal. The songwriting has slipped a bit on this album, although it is a much heavier and sonically interesting album than FLYWATT or the self titled album. Still, if you liked those two, you will definetly like this one. There is also a hilarious but novelty type song in Burrito that although not the greatest song musically, is plain hilarious. I definetly recommend this CD to Soak fans.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is awesome!.......2000-01-12

The first 2 soak cd's were good, even though alot of Flywatt was just remixed Soak songs. But this cd is very original, except for one song, but thats ok. Every song on this song rocks except one, but Burrito is so random and funny that it makes up for the, in my opinion, poorer musical quality. "Get Out" is one of the best songs from any band I have heard in a long time. Buy this cd if u like Soak. If you don't, I will hire Steve Forbes to come to your house in the night and sing u songs from Re-Load.

5 out of 5 stars Best album yet!.......2000-01-07

We all waited way too long for this album to come out, but now that it's out, it was definately worth the wait, it's gotta be their best album yet.

      Album Description

Uli Lenz, the dynamic and gifted German pianist whose playful sense of time, melody and composition has been heard around the world, is one of the new discoveries in jazz. He's been on the European scene for over 20 years and has constantly toured Europe, Africa, South America, The Caribbean, The Middle East, The South Pacific, China and Southeast Asia, and has recorded over 8 albums. Lenz's appearances in the United States have been usually just in New York--but all that is about to change with the release of his first Arkadia Jazz CD, Rainmaker's Dance.

The CD is a celebration of the newly found breakthrough for music by Uli Lenz. Featuring the spectacular Cuban drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, the masterful bassist Ira Coleman with a special guest appearance by Arkadia labelmate, alto saxophonist T.K. Blue, Rainmaker's Dance contains a menu of quirky, iconoclastic yet accessible original compositions and the standard My Foolish Heart. As Uli Lenz's first recording to have world-wide distribution, it is a strong and comprehensive summation of his twenty years of international touring to diverse audiences, countries and people, all with one thing in common: the love of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars New Jazz Pianist/Compser Debuts on Arkadia.......2001-05-29

When I picked up this CD, a glance at the tune-list told me this was an unusual album. Of twelve tunes on the album, only one, "My foolish heart" was familiar. The other eleven were compsed by Lenz. I thought, maybe producer Bob Karcy and/or Lena had a foolish heart or ego.

On reading producer Bob Karcy's liner notes, I learned that Lenz receive classical piano training and then moved on to jazz. He has performed jazz concerts in his native Germany but this CD is his first recording effort in the U. S.

The breadth of Lenz's pianistic and compositional skills are astounding. He swings. Some tunes are Monk-like in their harmonies. Some tunes have florid runs reminiscent of the Roger Williams "signature" run on "Autumn Leaves." He even give sthe ballad "My Foolish Heart" his own unique treatment with unusual harmonies. Lenz's compoistions have unique titles which have to do with his own experiences, but you'll have to listen to the album and read the liner notes to fully appreciate this.

Lenz is backed by New York studio musicians Ira Coleman, bass; Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, drums; and, on two numbers, by alto saxophonist T. K. Blue.

Congratulations for Lenz and group for a gigantic first effort. I hope for the next album sooner rather than later.
