5 out of 5 stars Betty Blue.......2006-12-21

The music fits in perfectly with the movie. I'm a Gabriel Yared fan myself - he actually answers his email, gang! Go to his website and see for yourself!!

Five stars for this soundtrack.

P.S., Now hear this, yes the songs are short - but still, I can listed to it at my desk for an extended period of time without having to change it. I don't find it boring at all...

5 out of 5 stars See the film to appreciate it more.......2006-05-01

I highly doubt that the French arthouse film 'Betty Blue' (37'2 Le Martin) would have achieved the cult status it now has, without Gabriel Yared's hauntingly atmospheric and very original soundtrack. It is one of most memorable and unique film musical scores I have heared, certainly from a foreign film. When I first saw Beineix's film, one the aspects which impressed and stayed with me the most was the music. Particularly, the gorgeous sexy saxaphone pieces which dominate many of the tracks, specifically 'Betty Et Zorg/Zorg Et Betty'. Another favourite and standout track is, 'Cargo Voyage'. It really has such a feeling of romantic innocence to it.
Much of the music has a very melancholy yet tender feel. Which, for those who haven't seen the film, describes the main characters' (Betty and Zorg's) passionate, yet doomed love affair, fittingly. Afew of the tracks are in fact, different arrangements and interpretations of the same melody or piece, and I think unless you had seen and were a fan of the film, you probably wouldn't appreciate this CD to its full effect, as it is very much connected to the emotion, mood and look of the film.
Still, for those who like something a bit different or experimental, there's some very interesting and eclectic influences in Yared's work here, from traditional French folk to Jazz and African tribal rhythms. Then there's the last track, 'Maudits Manages', rather quirky with its ominous and eerie 'Merry Go Round' theme, that opens the film and gives a hint of something much more dark and unsettling.
Yared's music soundtrack for Betty Blue is thoughtfully creative, it has a kind of exotic edge to it and is definitely very distinct and different to anything I've listened to before or since. But my recommendation is, definately see the movie to fully appreciate its merits.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, but too short ! .......2005-04-06

If you are a fan of the movie 'Betty Blue' and like the music you heard on it's soundtrack this would be an obvious choice. However one thing that surprised me was that the most beautiful tracks on the cd are all very short. One times in at about 56 seconds! With the exception of 2 or 3 tracks, almost every song is a little over a minute in length. The entire cd is about 38 minutes long. Most soundtracks usually contain complete versions of the songs when only a portion is used on the film. In this case I found that what you hear on the film is what you get on the soundtrack. Some of the tracks sound like samplers, with a fade up then fade down. The music is un-even, with beautiful numbers seperated by bad ones, but that is a matter of opinion. If you saw the film and heard a song you liked, beware that the soundtrack is not much longer than what you heard on film. I would give this 5 stars because of the beautiful music, I gave it 3 because of it's length.

2 out of 5 stars For fans of the film.......2003-07-15

If I didn't have a sentimental attachment to the movie, and associate the music with it in my mind, I would never listen to this: it's just really not that great as music. But if you loved the movie and are a sentimental sap like me, then by all means buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Gabriel Yareds only average score.......2002-04-18

Lets put this into perspective, this was Gabriel Yareds 1st composition and a fantastic debut .

Unfortunatly for that reason alone I had to compare it too his latter masterpieces such as 'City Of Angels' 'The English Patient' and 'The Lover'.

At the end of the day if you want the best from this composer I've told you his best. However due to the cult success to this film noir the soundtrack accompanies the film superbly but with exception to the odd saxophone tracks which are hauntingly beautiful the good tracks are cut very short and the 'funfair and ferris wheel music is inane and cheesy not something I would ever have expected from Yared, Imagine Elvis Presley singing 'twinkle Twinkle little star' and you get my point.

I believe Betty Blue is a collectors piece - nothing more, its like watching the 'Great' team you support play an inferior side you know the game wont be that good but your compelled, if your buying this on a whim I would not advise it , too many tracks, too short a playing time, badly compiled as you get a beautiful track then a really annoying cheesy one - go for one of his other works who wants the apprentice when they can have the master?

go for city of angels

I MISPLACED THE ALBUM SOME YEARS AGO SO IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HEAR IT AGAIN. IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH MS.CARTER'S SOUND, THEN THIS IS THE CD FOR YOU. IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!

5 out of 5 stars the masterpiece of a TRUE jazz singer .......2005-10-06

Betty's voice isn't what most people think of as "beautiful". To appreciate Betty's art, you got to get "inside". Before recording "Inside Betty", Miss Carter made a remarkable tour in Japan with Sonny Rollins. In this marvellous album she performs with a trio (wonderful Harold Mabern on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass -Rollins' soul mate-, and faithful Roy McCurdy on drums). Don't expect to hear pretty nice songs. She's gonna sing you the blues, she's gonna tell you what life is all about. She is a jazz singer's singer, a lady who did it her own way, a Lady I miss a lot. Listen to wonderful "You're a Sweetheart" (track 14) or "My Favorite Things" (in 1'35 she's said it all)... Highly recommended. 45 minutes' happiness. Train your ears.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating genius.......2005-04-21

Oh why did I never hear of her before? A voice that doesn't end...it moves ecstatically from note to note shimmering delightfully and then moving us to tears. Is there a DVD concert of this genius anywhere? And what a top notch backup crew...so much talent on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an introduction!.......2004-10-31

This was my first Betty Carter purchase, and what a great way to start... She was so versatile, and distinctive. There's a certain melancholy that occurs naturally in her voice. Can you believe I was introduced to her by way of the Cosby Show ?

She was incredible.

Michael

Betty is like no other. This has been one of my favorite discs for years; of all her albums, this is the best showcase of Betty's versatility and endless imagination. We should all live with such concentrated inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance in sound.......2007-05-13

McKellar has one of the finest tenor voices I have heard. There is a range that is broad, while keeping a very masculine sound. I learned that he was trained classically and gave up opera after a season or two to do concert singing. These songs have lush or spare orchestral arrangements as the occasion demands. They are dramatic, even Hollywood-like, arrangements verging on schmalt, but a second hearing convinced me that he was among the finest tenors of the 20th century and the arrangements are "just right."

5 out of 5 stars Scottish Songs for a Lifetime.......2007-05-12

If I was to be only able to carry one CD with me to a desert island, this one might be my choice. The poetry of Robert Burns is entirely inspiring. The vocal performance of McKellar is adequate to Burns' work. The orchestration is rich and appropriately simple. These songs will "stick to your ribs" and leave you longing for a visit to the old sod to personaly perceive the beloved ambiance they evoke.

5 out of 5 stars Simply exquisite!.......2007-05-06

Who can sing like this today? Vocalion has done it again -- two of Kenneth McKellar's wonderful Decca recordings from 1961 and 1962 brought together for a wonderful vocal treat. There are things the lover of the English art song and ballad cannot be without -- Jennifer Vyvyan's lovely renditions of Michael Head's Foxgloves and Roger Quilter's Love's philosophy; Eileen Farrell's stentorian Sing to me by Sydney Homer; John Mark Ainsley's rhapsodic performance of Quilter's Go, Lovely Rose, and Kenneth McKellar singing Land of Heart's Desire, Sleeps the Noon in the Deep Blue Sky and Robert Burns' My love is like a red, red rose. Happily, these songs are preserved on this terrific release. McKellar had a wonderful, powerful and lyric tenor voice. His operatic and oratorio singing is moving on top of being very musical -- dynamics, portamento, etc., scrupulously observed and artistic; however, his sining of art songs, folk songs and ballads is exemplary and always, underscored ALWAYS moving and right on the mark. McKellar had a real affinity for this music and it simply erupts from the grooves (oops, I'm dating myself)!

The Songs of Robert Burns is lovely -- I defy anyone to listen to McKellar's rendition of My love is like a red, red rose, and come away without a tear in the eye. In my opinion, however, the true gem is the release of McKellar's Songs of the Hebrides. Vocalion includes McKellar's spoken introductions to these songs and it is incredible. One might think that it would sound trite, but McKellar is right on the mark and the introductions make the songs that much more memorable. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser is surely smiling down from heaven as this is the most beautiful and atmospheric recording of her Songs of the Hebrides. McKellar scales down his powerful voice for Land of Heart's Desire and it is ravishing. No one comes away unmoved. Again, who can sing like this today? I tried to think of any tenor or baritone singing today that could come close to this kind of a performance -- I could not think of one. Thank you Vocalion for bringing these performances back to light. Speaking of the recording, it is lush, with that beautiful early stereophonic sound preserved. For the lover's of the art song, ballad or folk song, you MUST have these performances.

3 out of 5 stars Love and frustration.......2007-03-08

This recording has some wonderful Scottish songs by a super Scottish tenor. The difficult part for me is that I need the sheet music to go with one of the songs, but I had no luck locating it anywhere. There are other versions of the song ("My heart's in the highlands") available but none like this one. Is there any chance you could help me find it??

Sincerely,
Lyndall

5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating!.......2007-03-22

When I first listened to this CD, it did very little for me. I was expecting something a bit less gentle/subtle.

But now -- about a year later -- it has become part of my nightly ritual. I start it up and let it carry me away from the day's stress and aggravations. It is really good for getting into that meditative place that feels so wonderful after a busy day.

Sometimes I will even wake up in the middle of the night and start it playing so that it fills the place with beautiful sound.

I will be looking for more compilations like this one and hope the collaborators responsible for this will be working on more recordings.

I have listen to this fantastic album many times now and I have to say it is a wonderful cd to relax too. My favourite track is track 8 I would recomend this cd to anyone even if you dont normaly like classical music. I congratulate this duo and would love to see this remasterpiece performed live at the Royal Albert Hall...

5 out of 5 stars Classic Carter.......2000-06-16

In 1969, Betty Carter had been a pro for twenty years. After learning the ropes with the Lionel Hampton big band, worshipping Charlie Parker with all the other young boppers, and struggling to find her own style in the 50's (hobnobbing along the way with such luminaries as Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins), Carter teamed up with Ray Charles, recording the smash hit "Baby It's Cold Outside" with the Genius in 1961. But she wouldn't play along with the star machine and the relationship soured. She chose to go her own way, recording with small labels such as Roulette, who recorded "Finally," before starting her own label, BetCar. It was as she labored in obscurity with her trio, writing her own arrangements, that she developed the most strikingly original jazz vocal style since Sarah Vaughan made bebop her own. "Finally" catches Carter and her trio - pianist Norman Simmons, veteran accompanist of vocalists who went on to be musical director for Joe Williams, bassist Lisle Atkinson, and drummer Al Harewood - at a time their experiments had cohered into something truly special.

"Seems Like Old Time," the first track of the opening medley, is full of unusual dissonances alternating with pulsing swing. She brings the tempo way, way down for a tightrope walk through the Johnny Mercer lyric, "I Remember You," again throwing in change-ups in the rhythm and alluring, teasing pauses in the development, before swinging into Irving Berlin's "Remember."

Two other medleys are just as good or better: a scorching pair of ballads, "Body and Soul" and "Heart and Soul" (where you can hear from audience reaction what a consummate performer Carter was), and the grouping of two Rodgers and Hart standards, "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "I Could Write A Book," sandwiching a chestnut even more popular in jazz circles, Hammerstein and Kern's "All the Things You Are." But, like all of Betty's arrangements, no one had ever sung them like this before.

Among the other songs here, "Blue Moon" and "I Only Have Eyes For You" are typical of Carter's more straight-ahead readings of the standards, sung with verve and wit. "All Through the Day" is the first recorded example of Carter's fabled scat marathons, during which she generated uncommon momentum, bringing the listener into her sheer excitement at swinging so hard and so well.

Carter's voice is unorthodox and not as polished or agile as that of a Fitzgerald or a Vaughan, but any shortcomings are compensated for by the brilliance and uniqueness of her conception. Carter made many a fine recording, stretching over five decades; "Finally" captures a key moment in her art and is a must-have for anyone interested in understanding this wonderful maverick's development.

5 out of 5 stars Down for Double.......2004-01-21

I only bother to write five star reviews, and in this case I am pleased to have two singers on one CD who both deserve the maximum applause. I bought the CD unheard in my general absorbtion of big band female vocalists, and am knocked out by this tandem offering. They are quite different singers from one another, but both extreme examples of vocal excellence, set in cool arrangements. The great chart and clarinet artist, Jimmy Giuffre, plays on the Betty Bennett offering (along with her then-husband, Andre Previn) and did the Lurlean Hunter arrangements, which feature that ubiquitous muted trumpet genius, Harry "Sweets" Edison, show-cased on every cut. I hope that we will see the like of these women again in life, but the prospect doesn't look too good at the present time. Nobody wants to be lost, fossil-like, in the past, but some of the past is so bloody good, that it remains contemporary: the index of a classic. Like Betty and Lurlean. My pole star in this bag is Peggy Lee, and these two ladies can run with her.

      5 out of 5 stars Rediscovered gems.......2001-04-12

Band singer Betty Bennett has all but been forgotten except for having been married to Andre Previn. Her long-lost Atlantic album reveals an assured vocalist with eclectic taste in songs backed by topflight arrangements and instrumentalists. Lurlean Hunter, who died young, has never been forgotten and what a joy finally to have her Atlantic LP (please note, RCA). This sophisticated, savvy, thorough pro makes her way through topnotch material, also with enviable accompaniment. Everything she touches turns gold. I agree; had Lurlean lived and rock not taken over, she'd be right up there with all the greats. Almost every jazz singer I ever met (and I've met many) considers Lurlean one of the great talents. You will absolute love this remarkable CD--roses to whoever had brains enough to get it released.

5 out of 5 stars Lurlean Hunter on CD At Long Last.......2000-10-08

Lurlean Hunter and Betty Bennett are excellent jazz-oriented singers who launched their careers in the fifties. If rock hadn't taken over the pop music scene about then, I'd wager that Lulean's name might now be as familiar as Ella or Sarah or Peggy who launched their careers in early, more favorable times.

Lurlean is a joy to listen to whether she is singing a ballad or swinging up tempo. Her delivery is assured, womanly, sophisticated, her alto voice, warm and flowing. There is not a bad performance on the reissue of this 1960 Atlantic recording. The material is tops, songs like Crazy He Calls Me and As Long As I Live. The arrangements are by Jimmy Giuffre for a septet featuring Jimmy Jones on piano, Bud Freeman on tenor, Rudy Rutherford on trumpet, Jim Hall on bass, and Don Lamond on drums.

I first heard Lurlean Hunter singing in a club on Chicago's Rush Street in the mid-fifties, and subsequently saw her at clubs in Detroit and Toronto. She never disappointed. She originally recorded for RCA, and subsequently was featured on Arthur Godfrey's radio show. (Whoever owns RCA masters should get busy and reissue her work, and other gems, such as many of Fran Warren's singles for that label, like "Cloudy Morning".)

Betty Bennett sang with many of the best big bands in the days of their waning popularity. Her LP debut (one of my favorite LPs) was a beautiful collection of ballads on Trend, with strings and woodwinds conducted by her ex-husband, Andre Previn. Her Atlantic LP, which is reissued here, is not quite up to that standard, but includes some excellent performances, such as the title song, Nobody Else But Me. I prefer her ballads to her up-tempo work. Amazon has provided sound sample of her work, but should also have given its customers a chance to listen to Lurlean Hunter as well.
