The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09
My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.
This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!
The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.
Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05
Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.
TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.
Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").
While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.
Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).
Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.
Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.
Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29
Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.
Perfectly remastered classic.......2001-09-18
I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.
Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13
CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.
INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31
Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues, who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.
Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.

Brilliant and Unclassifiable.......2005-05-04
I don't give five stars to just anything. This deserves every star. If you are interested in hearing music that is completely original, you must place this cd on your wish list.
The ultimate Tuxedomoon record.......2004-08-22
Tuxedomoon returns stronger than ever. As far as I know this is the first Tuxedomoon album with both Blaine Reininger (who's violin and vocals dominate Half Mute and Desire) and Luc van Lieshout (the Belgian trumpet and harmonica player who joined on Holy Wars, Ship Of Fools, You). Annuncialto and Cagli Five-O have the same kind of vibe as The Waltz (Holy Wars). Dario Di Un Egoista, with Reininger on lead vocal, sounds like Paolo Conti on acid. The Island is a violin/piano piece a la Ghost Sonata. But Here 'Til X-Mas ('I'm just a carefree guy, with a song in my heart', Steven Brown croons and whistles) harks back to Half Mute or Desire, vaguely reminding me of '59 to 1'.
The only element missing is Winston Tong, who is alledgedly a heroin junkie. Sad... He does get co-credits for Baron Brown.

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Customer Reviews:
"VERNON DUKE'S SINGLE GREATEST BROADWAY ACHIEVEMENT" . . . .......2006-08-11
An LP of the 1964 revival of CABIN IN THE SKY has been in my collection now for 42 years, and I was thrilled when I read that DRG would issue a CD version. The show features the standard "Taking a Chance on Love," perhaps Vernon Duke's most popular composition, and other fine songs like "Do What You Want To Do," "Honey in the Honeycomb," "Not So Bad To Be Good," and, of course, the title song. The lyrics are by John La Touche, who later contributed the book & lyrics for THE GOLDEN APPLE and some additional lyrics for CANDIDE.
A reworking of the "Faust" legend, CABIN IN THE SKY is a musical fantasy "about the tug of war between good and evil in the rural South." ". . . a pious black woman named Petunia . . . prays so hard over her dying good-for-nothing husband's body that the Lord decides to give Little Joe six more months to earn his place in heaven. The Lord's General and his counterpart form the Other Place, Lucifer, Jr., do battle for Little Joe's soul, while their earthly representatives, Petunia and the sexy seductress Georgia Brown, duke it out for his body." (Martin Denton's review of the 2003 Musicals Tonight! presentation)
Opening to positive reviews at the Martin Beck Theatre on October 25, 1940, the original Broadway production starred the legendary Ethel Waters as "Petunia," Dooley Wilson as "Little Joe," Katherine Dunham as "Georgia Brown" (she also choreographed the show), and the great Todd Duncan as "The Lawd's General." (Duncan was Gershwin's original "Porgy" and also played "Stephen Kumalo" in Kurt Weill's LOST IN THE STARS.) A very successful film version was released by MGM in 1943 with Ethel Waters reprising her Broadway role but with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne, and Kenneth Spencer in the other parts. It also featured Duke Ellington and his orchestra and Louis Armstrong as "The Trumpeter." Trivia note: CABIN IN THE SKY was the first movie directed by Vincente Minnelli.
Musically, this 1964 Off-Broadway revival is a mixed bag. Rosetta Le Noire is a fine "Petunia," even though she's vocally weak on "Taking a Chance." Tony Middleton has a lot of fun as "Little Joe," and Ketty Lester is a sexy, sultry, seductive "Georgia Brown." However, Sam Laws does not possess the vocal weight to make "The General" a powerful presence. The original orchestrations (and Hugh Martin's vocal arrangements?) have been jettisoned in favor of new "big band" arrangements by Sy Oliver, a major mistake in my view. Rather than sounding "theatrical," it's more like a black "Steve & Eydie" Las Vegas show. Capitol's Full Dimensional Sound is excellent.
The CD booklet reprints Vernon Duke's notes from the original Capitol LP. Unfortunately, it does not include a plot synopsis.
Kenneth Jones calls CABIN IN THE SKY ". . . perhaps Vernon Duke's single greatest Broadway achievement." Perhaps. But I'd like to hear it with my dream cast: Audra McDonald , Brian Stokes Mitchell, Vanessa Williams, and Willard White. AND the original vocal & orchestral arrangement, of course.
Not a definitive recording of this score........2006-08-10
The 1964 off-Broadway revival was a dispirited affair that folded quickly. Capitol half-heartedly recorded the cast album but sales were minimal and it was soon deleted. A previous CD release by Broadway Angel has been out-of print for 10 years now.
You'd think DRG's reissue would be welcome, but the revival (and cast album) totally misses the charm of the original. No full original cast album was made of the 1940 Broadway production though star Ethel Waters recorded four songs on 78 RPM records. The m-g-m film version is well performed but only retains three songs from the stage show. So, for now, this is the only recording of the complete score yet it is so poorly performed the recording can hardly be called a mixed blessing.
CABIN IN THE SKY is no longer staged and it is unlikely we will ever be given a full definitive recording.
DRG has used the original LP artwork on the cover and reprints the liner notes from the LP jacket, so collectors who did not get the previous CD release will want this.

A historical gem.......2000-08-06
This extraordinarily valuable album captures wonderful music and wonderful performances from a different era. It takes you back to the days when all of this music was fresh and new. I'm sorry that it wasn't what the other reviewer expected, but she shouldn't have given it a single star. She expected steak. She got lobster. Her mistake, not the lobster's.
This is the orig cast from 1935. Not what I was hoping for!.......1999-07-13
The music features Ethel Waters Mabel Mercer, Todd Duncan ... from the broadway cast in the 30'. I was hoping for the mostion picture sound track in the 60's with Sammy Davis Jr., Pearl Baily, Dorthy Dandridge, ... This was very disapointing for me.
