When Bond film producer Albert Broccoli decided to adapt 007 creator Ian Fleming's most disparate work (a series of children's books inspired by his dislike of Beatrix Potter's work), he hedged his bets by hiring many of the talents who'd made the Bond series a mega- success: actor Gert Frobe (title character in Goldfinger); famed production designer Ken Adam; and children's author/screenwriter You Only Live Twice Roald Dahl. Broccoli teamed them with three of the musical stars (the songwriting Sherman Brothers and actor-singer-dancer Dick Van Dyke) who'd help make Mary Poppins one of the '60s' most successful screen musicals.
The result often strayed from Fleming's original plot, and it was only a modest success at the time of its release in 1968. However, its charms have won over successive generations, largely by the Sherman Brothers' Gilbert-and-Sullivan-for-the-knee-sock-set sophistication. --Jerry McCulley
From the Label
Based on Ian Fleming's original story, this children's musical classic about a nutty single dad inventor, his two kids, and their amazing flying car is MGM's most requested soundtrack. The title track was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Song, while unforgettable tracks like "Toot Sweets" and "Hushabye Mountain" sung by Dick Van Dyke, Lionel Jeffries, and Sally Ann Howes (among others) rounding out this delightfully charming collection. The arrangements are performed by a 90 piece orchestra who add the zany flourishes so perfect for the film. Irwin Kostal, who is highly regarded among soundtrack aficionados, produced hits for well-known films like The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, and West Side Story. Lyricists the Sherman Brothers were masters of the tongue-twisting lyric, and coined the word "fantasmagorical" especially for this movie.

Customer Reviews:
Toot Sweets!.......2005-07-30
I just finished listening to this soundtrack I borrowed from the library, and it was FANTASMAGORIGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The famous songwriting team, Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, who also wrote songs for "Mary Poppins", "The Slipper and the Rose", "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland", and many more timeless movies for the young and young at heart, brings out some more songs that we can all treasure.
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" I love it! All four versions of it are chittyrific! 5/5
"You Two" A charming song for single parents with two children. It's fun, sentimental, and full of love. 5/5
"Toot Sweets" In case you don't know, this is a song about the latest candy: a fruit candy that toots like a flute. It is what the song tells us: toot sweet! 5/5
"Hushabye Mountain/Hushabye Mountain (Reprise)" A neat lullabye to play to your children before you go they go to bed. Just let this song play, and their imagination flies. Mine certainly did!
5/5
"Me 'Ol Bam-Boo" A fun, upbeat song you can kick your heels to. It's lotsa fun! 5/5
"Truly Scrumptious" This is the name of Caratacus Potts love interest, and his two children sing about her being a nice person. You can also play this to your love interest. It's a really good song. 5/5
"Lovely Lonely Man" A romantic song where Truly sings about her love to Caratacus. It's really beautiful. 5/5
The other songs I haven't heard yet ("Posh" and
"The Roses of Sucess") or don't like ("Chu-Chi Face"). I like the speaking dialogues; it gives us a hint of what is going to happen later on. But you will not be let down. So let your imagination soar to the sky, and buy "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" movie and soundtrack today!
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.......2003-02-09
Bright, entertaining, and delightful fun. My family hums and sings the songs all the time. It's a great way to lift your spirits. If you don't have it, you should buy it!
As fun as the movie!.......2003-01-04
My daughter fell in love with this movie when she was barely 2, so we got her the soundtrack for a long car trip. She loved that too! She listened to it over and over, much better for us than some other alternatives, and more than a year later continues to do so.
Hard on the ears.......2002-12-06
I don't know what album my fellow reviewers were listening to, but the music on my CD is recorded as if at a distance and smothered with a thick gooey echo reminiscent of sixties simulated stereo. The dialogue excerpts (likely from a film or video master) make the music sound worse because they're crisp and clear. (Although we can do without that dead Groucho joke about the elephant. Obviously the film wasn't a laff riot.) Yet another case of bad engineers wreaking havoc on good music, an enjoyable (though not especially memorable) Sherman Brothers concoction from the movie musical's last days. One hopes that whoever next acquires the rights to these "MGM" recordings (AAAAARGH!!!) will do them justice, and not just run old reels through a tape machine, and avoid printing the liner notes like a troublemaking road map.
The only music to soothe my baby!.......2002-09-25
This CD was the only music that would calm down my baby when he was upset. Within five seconds of Track 1, he would stop crying and listen intently to the Overture. It was magic! And it certainly beats that lousy, mindless, electronic Baby Mozart music. Don't get me started on that!
Now my son dances to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang whenever we put it on and loves it in a whole new way.
