Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

4 out of 5 stars Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07

I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

5 out of 5 stars The DualDisc.......2005-10-20

Enough others have talked about the music presented on this disc. It's good - very good - and a testament to the musicians presenting it. Plenty more reviews available for the standard version. This review is of the DualDisc.

Dualdiscs are a relatively new piece of technology - a CD on one side, DVD on the other, and offer a number of advantages, as well as a few problems. The CD side does not conform to the "redbook" CD standard, and as such cannot be played on all CD players (this is a side effect of the thickness of the DualDisc). I've seen estimates ranging from 2% to 30% incompatibility, so be aware of this. The CD side seems to be especially problematic in computer DVD drives, so if you're purchasing a DualDisc and intending to rip the material to mp3, try to borrow a disc first to check that it will work correctly. Also, the extra thickness and double sided nature of the discs means you shouldn't use them in slot loading CD players like most car stereos or multi-disc juke boxes. All that said, I haven't had problems playing the CD side of any of my DualDiscs.
The DVD side is the same standard as normal DVDs, and can be played on any DVD player or drive. This offers slightly higher quality stereo playback (although I defy anyone to hear the difference) and often Dolby 5.1 playback, as well as an opportunity for extras.

On this DualDisc, the music is presented with a number of student films which are hardly worth the time to view, and a film of Yo-Yo Ma and Ennio Morricone talking about each other - the sort of gushing that would perhaps better be kept in private. If you do not have and do not expect ever to own a system capable of 5.1 playback, I would not recommend purchasing this DualDisc. But if you have 5.1 playback, it is a revalation. The difference between stereo and 5.1 is like night and day. The sound become more open, immersive, and defined. The rear channels are not overused - most of the time you'll be hard pressed to hear them at all - but take them away and you notice their absense. Sparingly, they are used to provide an aural backdrop such as the use of choir, and each time the effect is stunning. It's hard to put a finger on precisely why the 5.1 mix sounds so much better, but it more alive, involving, and emotive, and very, very worth the premium required to buy the DualDisc version of this album.

DualDiscs are, for the most part, a waste of time if they only contain stereo tracks or if you can't play back in 5.1. If you have a home theater, then buy this disc and enjoy a masterful soundscape and experience.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Collection of Ennio Morricone Music Performed by Yo-Yo Ma.......2005-10-06

When Ennio Morricone & Yo-Yo Ma met at the Oscars in 2001 (Morricone nominated for Malena; Ma performing on the Oscar winning score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) they both shared great interest in teaming up together. Three years later this album came to fruition. A stunning compilation of Morricone's music, newly orchestrated for Ma's cello.

The music is, as always exceptional from Morricone, ranging from the rich and spiritual 'The Mission', to the idiosyncratic genius of 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly'. Morricone has in places significantly altered the music to accommodate the cello. Yo-Yo Ma's supreme command over his instrument combines with an excellent performance of the Roma Sinfonietta under Morricone's baton.

The album starts with a brief suite from 'The Mission'. In Gabriel's Oboe (surely one of the most beautiful pieces of music written), Ma weaves his cello throughout the piece in spectacular fashion. The cello starts playing the melody, giving way to the oboe, and then plays in countermelody - breathtaking stuff.

The suite for the films of Giuseppe Tornatore starts off with the exquisite, 'Playing Love' from 'The Legend Of 1900'. Morricone's regular pianist, Gilda Butta, plays splendidly throughout the beautiful track. Other highlights include the nostalgic 'Cinema Paradiso' (one of Morricone's best), and the gorgeous theme from 'Malena'.

Many people became familiar with Morricone through his music from Sergio Leone's legendary films. Morricone had an unprecedented freedom to write the music for those films, often writing the themes before the film had even been shot. The haunting music from 'Once Upon A Time In America' is almost overwhelming in sheer emotion. Yo-Yo Ma's performance of 'Cockeye's Song' is outstanding. The main theme from 'Once Upon A Time In The West is played without the usual solo soprano part, instead replaced by the cello. The most unusual choice of music included on the album is 'The Ecstasy Of Gold' from 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly'. I was unsure how Morricone could make it work for the cello but he certainly does. This piece of music is drastically altered from its original form but Morricone keeps the spirit of the piece intact. It is a breathtaking track, surely one of, if not Morricone's best.

Next up is a short suite of music from the films of Brian DePalma. The main theme from 'Casualties Of War' is played without the choir. The 'Death Theme' form 'The Untouchables' features a sad and touching piece of music played beautifully by Ma, his cello replacing the sax in the original piece.

The album is rounded off with two suites of music that may be obscure to some listeners, but are equal in quality to the rest of the music that has come before hand. 'Moses' and 'Marco Polo' are featured first. 'Marco Polo' contains one of Morricone's best themes, magnificent; highly memorable. The album ends with two beautiful tracks from 'The Lady Caliph'.

The album is beautifully presented with many pictures and quotes of the composer and performer. This version of this excellent compilation features a Dual Disc. One side of the disc contains the album playable on most Audio CD players. On the other side the album is a DVD. The complete album is presented in a 5.1 Dolby Digital surround mix. It sounds outstanding, providing a far better listen for those with the capability. The DVD includes exclusive footage of the two legendary musicians talking together and recording the music. This disc also features four short films set to the music.

This is really an exceptional compilation of great music. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It comes as an excellent introduction to the music of both musicians and is also a satisfying listen to their fans.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Misery Tour.......2005-05-17

Actually, every word in the "Magical Misery Tour" was lifted from John Lennon's famous Rolling Stone Interview, which was even released as a paperback book. Or as Yoko said, "The Dream is Over."

4 out of 5 stars Embrace the Misery!.......2005-01-09

This album is an absolute must-have, because "Magical Misery Tour" is just about the funniest thing ever recorded. Give it a listen and you too will shriek "Mother! They're trying to crucify me!"

4 out of 5 stars Some incredibly funny stuff, some not so much..........2004-09-28

It's hard to remember what a cultural force Nat Lamp was in the 1970's. Only an institution such as the Lampoon could have helped to create the keystone epic "Animal House" and, of course "SNL", arguably the two most important and influential comedy forces of the decade. So it is with this in mind that I try to remain at least mildly unbiased in my assessment of this disc as, frankly, some of it absolutely first rate, even thirty years later. And some of it is, well...

So, why should you buy this disc? Well, here's why you shouldn't: "Save The Whales" is good for one listen only, and frankly, should have been done much better; "I'm A Woman" is a testiment to the fact that Gilda Radner was both overrated and, at times, incredibly annoying (although, in all fairness to her, the material itself was dated and silly probably 18 months after it was first recorded and would have been if anyone else had done it); "Pizza Man", a "tribute" to vocal stylings of 1950's rock/doo-wop that comes across as one of those "Is this supposed to be funny or just stupid?" moments; and "Those Fabulous Sixties" which is a head scratcher in terms of why in the hell this one was included. So, you ask, what is left? What is left indeed. The remaining tracks teeter between incredibly funny to sheer, total brilliance. "Deteriorata" is an amazing, and amusing, parody of the incredibly insipid "Desidorata", one of the top selling singles of the early 70's. "Colorado" demonstrates that not only was Chevy Chase once funny, he was also undeniably multi-talented; "Well-Intentioned Blues", a hysterical blues parody by Christopher Guest, and, arguably, the best thing on this CD; "Mission:Impeachable", another Chase gem that both amusingly and chillingly distillates the entire Watergate scandal in about two minutes; "Kung Fu Christmas", another funny song, "Mister Roberts", a howlingly funny (and loving) take on Mr. Rogers, with both Guest and Bill Murray displaying their collective genius in what is the funniest bit on the disc; "Gymnasty", a short, shockingly funny bit that will bring back memories of anyone who remembers the 1976 Olympics; "The Immigrants", a funny take on documentaries and, finally, "Magical Misery Tour", with lyrics that I believe must have been lifted directly from interviews that John Lennon gave in the 70's (there is no way that anyone at the Lampoon could have written anything both this brilliant and twisted!) So, there you have it. Most of the CD is terrific and you will listen to it over and over again. And thanks to the digital age for being able to move quickly past the dumb stuff. Buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Gilda.......2007-02-10

From her days on SLN to her specials, she was one of my favorites. A true class act. Her sense of humor was in a class of it's own. This CD is a tribute to some of her best preformances. I loved it then and I love it now. It's funny, yet sensitive. I am very happy I added it to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gilda: Unlike Any Other.......2003-06-28

She was born in 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, and after a stint with Second City shot to stardom as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live: a little slip of a thing with ordinary-girl-next-door looks, a cockerspaniel hairstyle, and twinkling eyes. And a charming, touching vulnerability that combined with a truly subversive sense of humor and a talent that was completely at home with the greatest comic artists of her generation. America's Sweetheart, suddenly, impossibly dead of ovarian cancer in 1989 at age 42.

GILDA RADNER: LIVE FROM NEW YORK extracts portions of her 1980 stage show, a program in which Radner drew heavily upon the characters she had first created for Saturday Night Live--but this was no rerun; the material was new and the characters were as fresh as they were when they debuted. There's Candy Slice, Radner's wickedly funny take-off on Patti Smith, Priestess of Punk; the sinus-afflicted teenager Lisa Loopner, who becomes overwrought during a piano recital; the slightly deaf and eternally confused Emily Litella, who suddenly finds herself working as a substitute teacher in a most unpleasant school; and Roseanne Roseannadanna, an aggressively obnoxious news commentator, delivering a commencement speech at (of all places) Columbia University.

All of these sketches have their charms, but to my mind the best selections from this recording are those in which Gilda Radner is just Gilda Radner, completely unencumbered by the necessity of creating an alter-ego. The opening "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals" is bright, cheery, and hilariously obscene; "I Love to Be Unhappy" is a classic of bright desperation; and the closing "Honey (Touch Me With My Clothes On)" is an incredibly charming bit of nostalgia, a recollection of early highschool romances in a more innocent time.

If I have a complaint with this recording, it is that it is partial and that on occasion the sketches really have to be seen as well as heard in order to fully appreciate them. This is particularly true of the Rhonda Wiess character, a Long Island Jewish princess furious at the FDA for banning saccharine--and who utters a truly disturbing line when she comments that "statistics show men prefer skinny girls with cancer to healthy girls with bulging thighs." At the time, the line got a tremendous laugh. Today it leaves you with a sharp wince of irony and a trace of tragedy.

Sadly, Radner never really had time to find the post-Saturday Night Fame which surely would have been hers: a few minor roles in minor films, a few television appearances, and suddenly it was over. But her unique brand of joyful innocence and sly humor remains intact both here and in other venues, where she is forever loveable, forever young, and absolutely, unspeakably funny. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Get me some Depends and some Kleenex!.......2001-06-07

I laugh so hard every time I hear this album (I had to buy the CD version of this when my vinyl copy finally wore out) I nearly lose control of my faculties. Until the part where Lisa Loopner sings "The Way We Were" and I start to weep.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant humor from a brilliant comedienne. A classic........1999-12-16

I remember purchasing this album when it came out in 1979, right after Gilda Radner's one-woman show had premiered on Broadway. Many of the lines from this record (which I played countless times in college for hysterical friends) are classics, and have stayed with me 'till today. (I'm 37 now). Her Roseanne Rosanneadana routine (a commencement speech) will have you laughing so hard you'll cry. Ditto for Emily Litella, and her punk-rock alter-ego, Candy Slice and the Slicers. ("If You Look Close" had me rolling on the floor the first time I heard it.) Also priceless is Radner's number as Rhonda Weiss - the stereotypical Brooklyn Jew/songstress. All in all, absolutely hilarious. How very sad, and what a great loss that Gilda died so young. She'll always live on, however, in my memory and in those of her many fans.

This is an excellent Rigoletto. Guilini's conducting is superb, if a bit on the serious side. Domingo is great as the Duke, and Cappuccilli's Rigoletto and Cotrubas' Gilda are also outstanding. The sound is wonderful. Anyone who needs a version with outstanding sound and excellent performance can buy this disc with confidence.

For myself, the first choice is the version with Callas and Gobbi. Perhaps Domingo is a better Duke, but Gobbi's sensitive musicianship makes him a fantastic Rigoletto, and Callas an outstanding Gilda. That version crackles with more excitement, though the sound per se is not as exciting as this one.

Eventually you will probably buy both versions if you love this opera as much as I do.

        Album Description

A composer whose name is synonymous with all that is good about film music, Ennio Morricone has had a revolutionary impact on the way films are scored, especially in his most celebrated genre: the spaghetti western. Born November 10, 1928 in Rome, young Morricone studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he became an accomplished trumpeter.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fine compilation, arranged by the Master himself.......2005-11-26

It seems that no one compilation captures all that's great about a musician, but this is probably the best Morricone compilation yet put out there. Morricone took several of his most beautiful film scores and arranged them for these performances, many of them for chamber-music formats. The standard Once Upon a Time themes are here, along with Gabriel's Oboe, Cinema Paradiso, and a gorgeous new arrangement from the Lolita soundtrack. Other greats to which I was introduced here include "Metti, Una Sera a Cena," "Rampage," and "Romanza." Even inadequate 30-second samples give a glimpse into the great beauty of these works. Disc 1 actually is the same as another Milan release, "Ennio Morricone: Film Music," but for a few dollars more (heh heh) you can get a fuller overview and further glimpse into his musicality on disc 2. Highly commendable.

This collection, whose French title might be translated "Verdi Vocal Rarities," is a unique contribution to the Verdi centennial year. Its 136 selections on eight compact discs offer an in-depth survey of singers who recorded notable Verdi performances during the era of 78-rpm recording. Coincidentally, this period covers, within a few years, the half- century after the composer's death, in 1901. Some of the singers in the earliest cuts--tenor Francesco Tamagno and bass Victor Maurel, for example--had known Verdi and sung for him. Many of the singers will be familiar to connoisseurs of Verdi discography--Enrico Caruso, Boris Christoff, Fedora Barbieri, Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Tito Gobbi, Beniamino Gigli, and Jussi Bjoerling, to name a few. Others, such as Frieda Hempel, Emmy Destinn, Martha Modl, Joseph Schwarz, Gino Cigna, and Mattia Battistini, are names you come across in books about opera, but you have heard their voices only if you spend a lot of time with historic recordings. And a lot of performances, including some of the best, are likely to be the work of singers encountered for the first time.

Most of the big moments from Verdi's operas are included--grouped by opera, not by chronological order of recording. There are a few strange omissions; for example, the "Miserere" scene from Il trovatore. But other selections, such as "Ah fors' e lui" and "La donna e mobile," are given in two or three performances--sometimes in French, German, or Russian as well as Italian. Some of the performances are classics; many are mind-boggling.

Some favorite Verdi singers--Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, among them--are absent because they began recording after the collection's cutoff date. Other problems are mostly related to the dates of the original recordings. The sound is all pre-high-fidelity and sometimes quite primitive, though some remarkable work has been done to optimize the earliest items. The annotations are minimal--mostly the date, venue, and performers in each cut, with pictures of the biggest stars. This decision was probably made to keep the price low, and those who already know most of the arias and ensembles will likely find the tradeoff acceptable. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars Rare but well-polished Verdi gems........2001-10-21

Classical music enthusiasts will have become aware that EMI have been marketing several boxed sets with a French title containing the word "introuvables". The word suggests that when you open the box you'll find items that are so rare as to be almost unobtainable. It suggests also that their rarity is not due only to age or production limitations, it is also due to the incomparability of their quality.

Few would quibble about the quality of what is to be found in this splendid collection of Verdi "introuvables". You will hear how Emmy Destinn portrayed Aida yearning for her homeland in 1908, and how Elisabeth Schwarzkopf portrayed Violetta intereacting with her lover's father in 1953. You will hear several items duplicated. Francesco Navarini, recorded in 1907 with a piano, makes a stunning Fiesco in the "Simon Boccanegra" prologue, as is not up-staged by the more familiar Alexander Kipnis version which follows.

You might regret that your favourite Verdi record is not here. You'll have opportunities to make comparisons, however. I could never believe that anyone could equal Giuseppe de Luca'a 1930 "O sommo Carlo" from "Ernani, but here I have a chance to hear for the first time how the famous baritone Mattia Battistini did it in 1906.

Keith Hardwick compiled and transferred this collection originally in the late 1980s. He has augmented and transferred that issue onto 8 CDs, and provided the annotations. Full recording details are provided, there are many singer photographs but no singer biographies.

The recording dates range from 1903 to 1953. Sadly, almost all the singers - Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf being a notable exception - are all dead by now. Those of us who have opportunities to hear and collect their work, however, can be grateful that the older we get the better it sounds. Indeed, I have never heard any of the items included here in better transfers. Elsewhere I have given this issue a five star rating. Subsequent hearings have made me aware of a technical matter which may bother some listeners. This set has been transferred from the long playing records on which it was originally issued. Their pristine sound quality has been preserved but also some of the ghostly "swish" that accompanied each revolution.
