The first of producer Hal Willner's splendid anthology series. Each outing allows an eclectic array of modern, vaguely avant-garde musicians to explore the work of a single composer. Here Bill Frisell, Sharon Freeman, Deborah Harry, Wynton Marsalis, and Carla Bley, among others, take on the haunting circus atmosphere of Nino Rota's scores for the films of Federico Fellini. The emphasis is on the jazzy, with Frisell's shimmering, ethereal take on Juliet of the Spirits, Jaki Bayard's solo piano version of Amarcord, and Freeman's lively suite from La Dolce Vita among the highlights. Although beginners might prefer Rota in the original soundtrack recordings, this is a welcome addition for the adventurous or those already on board. --Heidi MacDonald

Fellini + Rota = Magic.......2006-10-31
Orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the scores on the CD "Fellini Rota: Music from the Classic Films of Federico Fellini" are marvelous and unforgettable and I am never tired of listening to them. The CD is one of the favorites in my collection.
Rota's melodies have everything in them: Italy's shining sun, her blue sky, the sound of her sea. They've got ancient wisdom of Rome and eternal innocence of a child. They are in Cabiria's smile, Gradisca's walk, Anita's fountain, Juliet's quiet loneliness, it the songs of Gelsomina's trumpet, in La Saraghina's lurid dance on the beach. Rota filled his tunes with beauty, poetry, romance, longing, regrets and dreams that may never come true but they are beautiful dreams anyway. Sweet and melodical, gentle and rhythmical, kind and lovely, they keep playing after the films are over, all characters disappear from the screen and what is left behind is "a little orchestra of Hope with Love as its conductor". The last that we hear in is the magic music of Rota, bringing affirmation, hope and love.

Customer Reviews:
essence of Fellini..........2007-05-09
As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...
Excellent!.......2007-04-22
For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.
The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducted.
"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.
In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirely (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.
Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.
Silva Screen Records and James Fitzpatrick (producer), please stand up and take a bow for the well deserved rare gems you've given us. This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!

Customer Reviews:
Essential Listening, but hard to find.......2002-02-19
This is the best of Wilner's compliations. These jazz artists -- the best in the buinsess at the time (unfortunatley Bayard is no longer with us)-- obviously love the music, and the affection and respect are apparent in every track. It's a mixed bag illuminating the different faces of Rota from the jaunty circus themes to the lonliness of lost love. This is truly one of my favorite jazz records and it's also a great anthology of lesser-known great artists.
Jazzy covers of the Nino Rota classics - a must have!.......1999-07-16
The album is comprised completely of cover versions of the Nino Rota Classics (and those are anything but kitschy). I love the originals but I must say that I almost love these, for the most part, jazzy covers even more! The covers are much more moody, often slower and more melodic. This is an album to have!
Modern take on kitschy originals.......1998-05-27
For those of you thinking you'll get the origional scores from the Fellini movies, this isn't it. This is, however, an elegant modern take on Rota's compositions by talented contemporary jazz artists such as Bill Frisell, Jackie Byard and Dave Samuels. Brings the Italian Riviera to life, but not the Italian Riviera of Fellini's 1950's and 60's. Still, this is a nice addition to any jazz collection.

Customer Reviews:
The evocative score of Fellini's most evocative work.......2002-05-11
Nino Rota's scores have graced dozens of classic films, but "Amarcord" may be his best. The playful, nostalgic music is so evocative that listening to this CD is like watching the movie with your ears.
Throughout the score, genres and textures swirl, collide and dance, aping Fellini's fever-dream images. The title cut swings luxuriously between niteclub-jazz swagger, waves of strings, and wistful strains of traditional accordion. "Lo Struscio" impishly cops musical phrases from "Stormy Weather" and "La Cucaracha." Yet it all sounds organic, and wholly Rota's own.
Only drawback -- a very short running time of 29 and a half minutes. I still found it worth full price, but you're lucky enough to have found this import for a really insanely low used price. If you're at all a fan of Fellini's or Rota's, jump on it.

Notes for Pictures - A perfect accompany.......2001-01-04
Fellini's films are full of visions of his own dreams. He once said that he was keeping a notebook near by his bed so that when he wakes up anytime at night or in the morning he would have instant access to a pen and a piece of paper to note or sketch his dreams. For a second, think about yourself being a movie director and that you would like to film one of your dreams, your favorite dream for example. What music would you use? Do we dream silent or with sounds? Or, when we wake up, do we remember the music in our dreams? How can one compose music for another person's dream? You will find answers to these intersting questions with this CD. It is a beautiful CD full of inspiration and a perfect match of two artists' work. Rota understood Fellini perfectly and succeeded in composing for another person's dreams. Sometimes, listening to this CD, I wonder if Fellini's dreams have changed after meeting Rota.

"Silva Screen releases film culture European style".......2001-11-28
Believe Silva Screen saved the best for last...the ongoing series comes to an end with "Arthouse Cafe 3"...this time highlighting not just the scores from France, but the entire European community...thus with have "Classic European Film Music" ...some of the best known composers around ~ Enrique Bacalov, Gato Barbieri, Van Den Budenmayer, Klaus Doldinger, Goblin, Maurice Jarre, Gustav Mahler, Ennio Morricone, Zbigniew Preisner, Nino Rota, Ilona Sekacz and Mikis Theodorakis...each composer so different in their approach to the story-line, but always setting the mood for each character to act out his or her part.
There are several stand outs on this compilation that need mentioning ~ "IL POSTINO"(Bacalov)..."LA DOLCE VITA"(Rota)..."Z"(Theodorakis)..."CINEMA PARADISO"(Morricone)..."PHAEDRA"(Theodorakis)..."ARMARCORD"(Rota)..."THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE"(Van den Budenmayer/Preisner)...and my all-time favorite "ZORBA THE GREEK"(Theodorakis), loved the film with Anthony Quinn, and the music was so inspiring, so earthy and festive, with a hint sadness reflections of daily life, with its ups and downs, will never forget the impact this had on me when I first heard his music.
Under the watchful eye of James Fitzpatrick(producer), featuring The City Of Prague Philharmonic...conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine...Mark Ayres producing Electronic Music...so my "film-score-buff" friends, this is a keeper, make room for one of the most outstanding collections to come out of the SILVA SCREEN vaults!
Total Time: 71:01 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen Records STD-5019 ~ (1998)
arthouse cafe 3.......2000-09-25
I found this selection of European Film Music harmonically well put together...although I expected to have the themes played a little longer - some are only two to three minutes long - This takes away from the beauty of the melody. Otherwise the combination between the themes in "Il Postino" and "Cinema Paradiso" or "Zorba" combined with "Amarcord" and "Das Boot" makes it a very atractive C.D., offering "the unexpectated".
