This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

This film adaptation of the popular video game series attempts a technological breakthrough: computer-generated, photo-realistic renditions of human characters. But while critics and audiences gave mixed marks to game creator and film producer-director Hironobu Sakaguchi's ambitious technical efforts, it was ironically the film's most obviously human elements--its veteran actors' voice performances and, crucially, the masterful score by Elliot Goldenthal--that really brought it to life. Goldenthal's work is a sweeping orchestral masterpiece that covers vast musical territory, from the action-adventure of Korngold to the fantasy strains of Herrmann, florid Russian romanticism to touches of late-20th-century modernism. With the London Symphony in full voice and then some, Goldenthal's music is treated to a performance of rare dynamic range and dramatic power; the edgy, modern brass flourishes and thunderous percussion of "Toccata and Dreamscapes" alone may have listeners groping for their seatbelts. The album also features a pair of obligatory pop tracks, Lara Fabian's "The Dream Within" (which makes good use of Goldenthal's romantic themes) and L'Arc-en-Ciel's "Spirit Dreams Inside" (which doesn't). --Jerry McCulley

Race to Old New York.......2007-04-01

-I'm not big on RPG's so I don't know much about the "Final Fantasy" games, but I do hear that the scores are largely excellent so I was a bit surprised when the game composer wasn't used and the great Elliot Goldenthal was brought in instead. Unlike the movie which is a beautiful disappointment, the score is fantastic and definitely one of the best from this very underrated composer that does not get the respect he deserves.

-The best piece of music on the album and one of the best musical cues I've heard in my life is "Race to Old New York" which starts off with this fast moving strings that plays this simple melody, then shortly after the brass comes in and picks up the melody which keeps going to the short cue comes to it's natural resolution. I don't seem to remember hearing that cue in the movie which was a shame because it's so wonderful.

-Other tracks that should make glad that you have ears are "The Phantom Plains", "Dead Rain", "Code Red", "Music for Dialogues", "Winged Serpent", "Zeus Cannon", and "Adagio and Transfiguration". I love how he blends the techno stuff with the orchestral elements in "Dead Rain" and "Winged Serpent" is just creepy as hell. "Zeus Cannon" is a majestic piece that sounds like the music that should accompany a Greek god. "Music for Dialogues" is a great piece that should be familiar territory for all Goldenthal fans.

-There is an isolated track on the DVD which is great, but Goldenthal seems to have the same problem that great composer Marco Beltrami has, which is to talk over the music. Most of the cues he does talk over are on the album so it's not that big of a problem, although I do wish he would have actually talked for the scenes when there was no music. 10 minutes would pass by and we won't hear a peep from him, but he is a brilliant composer so I guess we can forgive his lack of great DVD commentaries.

-Even if you find the movie to be a little disappointing, the score should keep you interested. It's fresh, it's great and gives birth to "Race to Old New York" which should be included in any filmmusic geek's top 50 of great musical cues of all time

Masterpiece........2006-11-28

I cannot express how finely crafted this score is. Goldenthal is one of my favorite composers (not just for film) and this is definitely one of his highlights. I believe that where this score really shines is Elliot's way of making really simple musical ideas sound extremely intense and grand. For example, Race to Old New York, one of my favorite cues, has an extremely powerful opening that is nothing but a string ensemble racing up and down a g minor chord. Yet it instantly exposes many raw emotions that other composers would need a few movements of a symphony to convey. Most of Goldenthal's trademarks can be found in this score. Horn tone clusters, near-atonal trills on brass, and HUGE, no, EPIC orchestrations that we fell in love with in Titus. The glass harmonica (and the way Elliot employs it) found its way into this film from the score for Interview with the Vampire. I could go on, but I won't. This is a remarkable CD by one of the best living composers (now that Ligeti is no longer with us).

This has to be Goldenthal's best score to date! It's an orchestral masterpiece performed by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra.

Let me explain a few awesome tracks before giving the downside to this release.

The album opens with ambient noise and dark choir, much like Horner's Aliens. The second track, "Race to Old New York", doesn't appear on the film, or as this cue version does on the album. It's played by racing strings and low brass. Very good track and one of my favorites.

"The Kiss" proves to Hollywood and Goldenthal skeptics that he is able to pull of romantic, soothing themes. "The Kiss" is a romantic theme played by piano with some strings.

"Toccata and Dreamscapes" is the longest and most difficult track to perform. Goldenthal employs 40 French horns (!) to blast, grunt and shrill away every once in a while during the percussion and interrupted string action. One of the best tracks!

"Adagio and Transfiguration" closes the score album with a sad, sweeping reprise of the romantic theme and finishes on a solo trumpet.

Between all of these reviewed tracks are mixtures of sweeping cues, rolling strings, tense moments and dark choir. All this makes for a very diverse range of music on about 50 minutes of score for this release.

The album ends with two songs. Lara Fabian's rendition of the love theme in pop form is nice but is ruined by the last song on the album not worth mentioning. The rock song ruins the entire listening experience.

The Complaints:
One I've already mentioned: the stupid rock song at the end of the CD; two, the music is not in chronological order, but I guess it makes for a better listening experience; and three, much good music is missing! "Dead Rain" is almost 8 minutes long on the film and we only get about 2 minutes on the album cut. The good thing about the special edition DVD is that we get the option of an isolated track and commentary by Elliot Goldenthal. Goldenthal is smart leaving the music cues that didn't appear on the album uncommented.

Get this soundtrack and the special edition DVD. They're worth every penny!

"Where's my second disc?" (sarcasm).......2005-09-15

If you've seen Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within DVD, you've probably listened to the isolated score with commentary by Elliot Goldenthal, during which you will notice that he talks over certain bits of score but leaves other chunks of score alone, un-interrupted.

It more or less translates to this: The sections of score he talks over seem to all be here on the soundtrack and well covered. The several chunks of score he doesn't talk over some over eight minutes in length: completely axed and not used for this soundtrack.

"Dead Rain" is missing about seven minutes of great scoring which blend into it seemlessly in the film. Why do those responsible for cutting the score for a film's soundtrack axe some of the better parts (in my mind) in exchange for one or two tracks that don't seem to tell as much of a story? I've experienced this with so many scores I've bought. Exceptional pieces used in films getting axed.. and for what? The expense of a second disc? I'd gladly pay for a second disc or for a third folks. I really would, especially with scores like this.

Which is why I'm giving this soundtrack 3 stars. Not because the music sucks, it's great and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just remember to own the film on DVD as well as this soundtrack so you can get a little extra from Elliot.

Goldenthal at his peak performance.......2005-07-22

Elliot Goldenthal wrote a grand, majestic score for the computer-animated science-fiction spectacle "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." The music bursts with roaring brass under climactic string arpeggios, carrying the listener high on a violent tidal wave, when suddenly the wave is broken and settles down with a soft female voice humming over an elusive and beautiful melody played on the piano. There's a sparse use of the synthesizer, apart from some choir effects in the background and echoing ambient sounds. The accent is very much on music played by a big orchestra.
This film doubtlessly features one of Goldenthal's best film scores. It's rich and inspired in every scene and every take. It keeps your attention, down to the last minute on the album. The music for the dream sequences is the most complex and grand, with a complex combination of percussion, string arpeggios and brass - often culminating like a thunderstorm, but always leaving a calm resuscitation behind. Buy this if you like modern, complex, grand music and lush sweeping "dreamscape" music.

This one gets 4 stars.

Better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks.......2007-01-24

First of all, people seem to be overly critical of the choir. They say that it sounds out of tune or whatever, but this is only because they were recorded live. In Advent: One-Winged Angel, the same choir sounds totally incredible. The choir itself isn't bad, it's the recording environment that was not so hot.
That said, I can say that this is a very impressive two CD set, even though several of the songs I don't recognize. The music is professionally composed and arranged, and just goes to show that Final Fantasy music is proffesional level. The only cons are the lesser sound quality of being recorded live and the MC tracks, which can get to be a bit long. The way they keep talking makes me really want to know what they're saying. My favorite pieces are:
1. One-Winged Angel: I do admit that the FFVII Reunion Tracks arrangement is better, but only because of the recording environment. This arrangement has a lot of cool new elements and an awesome sound. The only problems I see with this arrangement is the absent-minded microphone placement and a bit of background shuffling that is heard at one part. The shuffling is very quiet and you get used to it, but I'm just picky about these things. As for the microphone placement; whoever put one right next to the #%@$in' snare drum deproved the quality of the piece a bit much. The snare drum during the chorus is louder than any of the other parts, and the choir is already being a bit overpowered by the orchestra. This makes for a choral section that isn't heard well enough. Despite all these slight cons, however, this arrangement of the classic piece remains superb and awesome-sounding.
2. Liberi Fatali: Same choir rant as before. This arrangement doesn't sound quite as good as the original, but it's not really that different, it's still an incredible piece.
3. Melodies of Life: This arrangement is better, I think, than the original except for the singing. She sounded a lot more confident in the original. But aside from that, this song is a great classic.
4. Suteki Da Ne: The original was quite a bit better, both in sound quality and in the singing. Rikki was nervous during the performance, it is shown by her incessant breath-taking in the middle of phrases and low confidence in her voice. However, the instrumentation does sound nicely different in some spots, and Rikki's singing is still beautiful.
This album is a must-have for any FF freak, and is better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks. Don't miss it.

I love this CD........2004-02-23

Firstly, Mr. Gibbs -- why would anybody buy this if they haven't played Final Fantasy games?

Secondly, this is an amazing CD. With the exception of One-Winged Angel, every track on this CD is (in my opinion) the best orchestral version of these songs ever done. And this is coming from somebody who owns Celtic Moon, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec, and a smattering of Orchestral Game Concert CDs.

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It really is excellent.

For those who wanna get their FF orchestra groove on..........2004-02-20

Final Fantasy 20020220 is worth buying. It is a great CD to listen to if you want to hear orchestrated versions performed live, mistakes and all. That said, let me point out everything that is wrong with the performances, and why I did not give 20020220 a 5/5. As partial as I am to Final Fantasy music, I must criticize the singing in this performance. In both tracks that featured a choir (Liberi Fatali and One Winged Angel) it seemed like everyone was trying to outsing each other, the tenors in particular would sing awfully loud, while everyone else was drowned out. The soloists RIKKI and Emiko Shiratori did a fabulous job, in my opinon. Others said that they sounded nervous, I do not agree. The actual performance by the orchestra was brilliant. I especially liked Liberi Fatali, One Winged Angel, and Vamo' Alla Flamenco. I wish I could speak Japanese, because 8 of the 25 tracks on the 2 disc set are nothing but the concert MCs talking about stuff. All in all I would like to restate that FF20020220 is worth buying, but maybe you should play some of the FF games to hear these songs before you listen to the orchestra version, all the more to appreciate this masterpiece.

The Fantasy Continues..........2003-06-10

Nobuo Uematsu truly holds true to the Final Fantasy music legacy he himself set down beginning with the Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CDs. Although I do have a few complaints, my overall take on this album is extremely positive. I'd say my favourite renditions on this CD are "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", lush, rich arrangement for orchestra (which truly is the greatest symphonic rendering I've seen from almost any game composer [thanks to Shiro Hamaguchi]) and the brass-graced Final Fantasy VI's "Terra" / "Tina" (which almost lives up to the Grand Finale version). Basically, every single song on these two CDs were mind-blowing with the exceptions of the two most crucial ones, "Liberi Fatali" and "One-Winged Angel". Okay, fine... I've got to give credit where credit is due, Liberi Fatali isn't THAT bad. It falters near the end though, but the primary complaint isn't the symphonic elements (or even the annoying snare [?] drum... *grrr*), but rather the supposed choir they assigned. Not very harmonic or in-tune, but I still give it 4-stars.
To sum it all up, all very nice arrangements with those little differences which make it all the more enjoyable. Cons? The choir voices and the MC segments (I don't speak Japanese, so my apologies if you do and find them entertaining).

One of the Best (non OST) Final Fantasy works.......2003-02-19

There hasn't been a live CD since the ill-fated "Symphonic Suite" many years ago and now there is this - quite simply put a live version of some of the best Final Fantasy songs. The Tokyo Philharmonic is on every beat and adds alittle more to the Final Fantasy melodies. The MC's get annoying and their Japanese is very hard to understand. The choice of songs was superb yet there is no "live feel" as most of the songs are played just as you would have heard them on another Final Fantasy CD. All in all, this is one of the best and one can easily see by some of its few flaws to its real beauty - the epitome of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy work.

There are better CD's.......2006-12-11

I had this review under a different CD (The Best of Final Fantasy 1994-1999), but it was also under a different user-name (actually, same user-name, but it had quote marks around it, somehow making it a different account. That's all irrelevant to this CD, though)

This CD isn't exactly the worst out there, but it has some points where it comes pretty close. Track one is good once you get used to it. At first it sounds sucky, but it gets better. The second one is about the same as the second half of the first one but is done with different instruments. The third one is absolutely horrible! Skip it at all costs! The Prelude could be better, mostly longer and with the crystal-like sound of FFVII and FFIV instead of the cheap piano keyboard. The opening theme could be done much better. Preferably like it was done in FF Generation S. There is absolutely no life in this track, whereas if you listen to Final Fantasy S Generations, you can definitely tell the difference. To list just a couple of reasons: there's about two minutes more music on S Generations than on this CD, and the music is orchestrated making it feel more alive. Cosmo Canyon was done pretty well, if not a little fast for the original pace. If they had slowed the tempo down a bit it would've been perfect. I personally didn't have any problems with the Shinra March, and it does have a catchy tune. The eighth one was incredibly ridiculous!!! Once again I refer to the FF Generation S. That was done 1000 percent better and didn't use cheap electronic synth vocals. The vocals aren't even understandable. The ninth track is pretty much the same as the second one of FF Generation S. The rest of the tracks I pretty much skip because they aren't worth the time and aren't done very well. The choice of instruments is extremely cheap and the sound is unpleasent. In reality, I recommend FF Generation S over this one, but this one is good to listen to from time to time just as long as you are willing to deal with some of the garbage.

All in all---This CD is a joke. The music itself is just under average, but if you listen to it enough you might start to like it. I go back occasionally to listen to a few tracks, but it's rare. You're $20 bucks, or however much you want to waste on it, can be spent in better places so definitely skip.

This CD is a joke........2006-07-28

Initally, I felt cheated, slighted, and disturbed that someone got away with releasing a CD of this exceptionally poor quality--and featuring the works of such a brilliant composer, to boot. The fact that whoever created this is trying to pass off this MIDI garbage as symphonic works. The quality is for the most part not even up to par with the tracks from the games (Liberi Fatali is exceptionally bad.)[...] This guy, whoever he is, is responsible for equally poor arrangements of otherwise great soundtracks (and apparently classical works as well) and to be completely honest, I don't think any of them deserved to be dragged through the mud like this.
Sherman Records has produced poor quality CDs and maintains a poor quality website that attempts to pass off its own sorry synthesised work as the authentic music of a real-life Symphony Orchestra.
The MajesticMix track is actually half decent. My sympathies to the creators of that track for appearing on such an otherwise laughable attempt at a "soundtrack" release.

Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad..........2005-09-21

I purchased this cd thinking that I would be getting another interpretation of the FF concert series which went through the US these past couple of years. Boy was I wrong.

The music on this cd was nothing like what Final Fantasy fans have come to know and love. I am still trying to figure out how this cd ever got made since it is absolute crap. What makes me most curious is that the cd has a paragraph saying "This Recording is Neither Sponsored or Endoresed by the Orignal Arists or Owners." It is a good thing that the artists and owners are not connecting themselves with the cd, but someone still had to give the permission for this cd to be released. Honestly, do not buy this cd unless you must have every cd ever made with the name Final Fantasy on it.

FYI, regarding Track 12, this was orignally from a fan-based cd release called "Project Majestic Mix." I'm not sure how a song from the PMM cd became a part of this album, but its about the only good thing here.

Stick With Imports.......2005-09-16

This is positively awful. The first track is bearable, the rest is horrendous (can't comment on track 12, my copy is older and doesn't have it). The "instruments" aren't even properly blended. I use quotes because it sounds totally synthesized. Symphonic Suite, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec, these are the albums you should look for if you want to hear orchestral Final Fantasy.

Hollywood Symphony Orchestra MY BEHIND!!

This was the crappiest 4 bucks I've ever spent... Immediately after reading the following from the back of the CD...

"Earth has been decimated by a meteor... The beautiful and capable Dr. Aki Ross is Earth's last hope against extinction. This new recording, featuring the world-renowned Nobuo Uematsu, captures the excitement and drama of this popular videogame-turned blockbuster movie."

a few things...
1) to the right of the above paragraph was this message: "THIS RECORDING IS NEITHER SPONSORED OR ENDORSED BY THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS OR OWNERS."
2) The writer for the CD cover has clearly not ever played any of the FF games--he fails to notice that any of the FF games are continuations.
3) The FF film was not "a blockbuster movie".

Amateurish digital instrumentation, completely craptastic. I'd give it zero stars, but that wasn't an option...

Okay.... here is the track listing:

This is a great cd. I really loved the main theme, and just wanted the main theme...so this cd was perfect!!

My only problem is that the cd is not really packaged good. It's in a really thin case!! Also there is no art work or anything if you like that kinda stuff. But it's still a winner!!

This album is awesome. I bought it a while ago, and after listening to it, I definitely had to get the game. If you have the game, still get the album. Take FFX-2 with you where ever you go. I do. It is just that good. The best songs on the Album are Real Emotion and 1000 words(no Kotabi).

Pretty good album.......2003-08-08

I think that both this and the regular soundtrack are pretty good. For me, it didn't really catch on a whole lot initially, but I sort of grew into the music. There is in fact going to be an english version of Real Emotion and 1000 Words. It will be on a single by Koda Kumi titled "Come With Me". The title track is a new song for her. It includes the 3 songs normally and also has the FFX-2 ones in remix form and has the title song as an instrumental. The date I heard for it is 8/27/03. Also, Kristine Sa has sung an english version of Real Emotion. It was located on her main site, but I'm not sure if it is there anymore.

Some great J-Pop!.......2003-04-16

Final Fantasy X-2 looks like it's going to be a great game, and the music rocks!
Real Emotion is the best of the two vocal tracks on this CD, sung by Koda Kumi who is also the gorgeous Yuna's voice actress. I first herd the track when I saw a trailer for FFX-2 and the entire opening movie of Yuna singing and dancing on stage in the same arena as the blitzball tournament is held on Final Fantasy X!
I really reccomend you buy this single, even if you're not a fan of a game, just a J-Pop fan!

Real Emotion a Real Surprise.......2003-04-11

Despite the bounce, the first track (Real Emotion) is an ear-opener. It brings to Final Fantasy a new feel, and an almost 'Girl-Power' sense. "What can I do for you?" it asks. It can bounce you out of your seat.

The second track (1000 Words) is more refined, far more sedate. It has the feel of a love song, and it's presented more as a ballad. (It's interesting to note here that three different versions of this one appear on the full OST.)

I only had a few concerns with this, the first being that the instrumentals are plain and simple. There are no backing vocals, which make things a bit difficult for those who wish to perform Real Emotion. And there isn't an English version of these as of yet, but when "Hikari" first came out for Kingdom Hearts, they didn't have an English version either. So it should prove interesting to see if they do release an English version with this, or if they'll leave us with the Japanese.
