There is no other band that sounds like them, or has the lyrical poetry that Kim brings to the table with this CD and Eurotrash. Zeromancer is no "cookie cutter" goth band. But I would recommend Eurotrash as purchase one, followed by Clone your Lover, and the DVD is pretty good too.

Great cd........2004-12-26

While I haven't heard the band Orgy which they are often compared to, I'll be looking into Orgy soon but I think it would be hard for Orgy to be as good as Zeromancer (who I heard of from a friend), if you like NIN (though Zeromancer would make better dance music, there is more of a beat) or industrial/goth rock, I would recommend this cd but if you like something heavy, go with there other CD, Eurotrash which I have also written a review for.

Not their strongest.......2004-10-23

I didn't like this album very much. I don't know why. It just....wasn't very interesting. I didn't find ANY songs that caught my interest at all. I was very disappointed.

Then again, I don't really know why I don't like it. Maybe because it's rather bland? I don't know. It's just not very interesting at all.

Impressive 1st Release.......2004-06-17

Well, if you are in Europe it is their first release, though was not released in the U.S. until after their 2nd release, Eurotrash. The best I can describe Zeromancer, as far as genre is concerned, is Industrial/Alternative/Pop. They mix these three elements in such a way that fans of any of those three types of music can enjoy it. Industrial fans will like the dark techno element, alternative folks will like the guitar jamming and pop fans will enjoy their knack for nailing a powerful chorus. Though they will not attain the ultimate mixing of these three genres until their most recent release, ZZYZX, this is still an amazingly solid CD. It starts out rocking and doesn't let up until the final track, Houses of Cards, which is their 'mellow' song on the album. It is a great way to finish and allows the band to show their melodic sense in a more obvious way than the other faster tempo tracks. The track that should have been all over the radio stations is Something for the Pain, though any of the first 5 tunes are worthy of airplay. Not that there is a bad track on the disc by any means, the first 5 just happen to be more widely accessible in my opinion. People that like Orgy (a band they are often compared to), NIN's more straight forward stuff and heavier alt rock will ejoy this disc. The only thing stopping them from being popular is that they may be too heavy for the typical alt rocker and are viewed as not hard enough by those more into the real heavy stuff. This is considered to be the bands darkest and heaviest release as they only hint at their pop side. But they lay the groundwork for what is to come.

how can u tell if a band is christian or not? i am looking for christian heavy metal/industrial. i like klank, and circle of dust, but dont know if either are christian? can anyone tell me how to find out? i look on their websites and they dont say!

Although Leo Kottke has recorded with the occasional guest artist before, Clone marks the first time he has worked with a full-fledged collaborator. Phish bass player Mike Gordon certainly has the musical chops to keep up with Kottke's intricate fingerpicking, but songs like "Car Carrier Blues," in which the singer worries about being crushed by a falling auto from a car-carrying truck, or the surreal "From Pizza Towers to Defeat," which was composed by Bob "Frizz" Fuller, suggest that both musicians were drawn together as much by their slightly skewed worldview as by their musical compatibility. The instrumental tracks, which include generous helpings of Kottke's impeccable picking and Gordon's sinuous bass lines, are augmented by an assortment of peculiar instruments like the "skull flute," kitchen percussion (a polite name for banging on pots and pans), and an ancient, slightly dysfunctional guitar synthesizer called the Condor. The music sounds as if Kottke and Gordon had a great time in the studio together. The only problem with this CD is the title. The word clone implies this is a copy of something, but it's guaranteed you've never heard anything quite like this from either musician before. --Michael Simmons

Mis-match Misses the Mark.......2005-11-04

Another 30+ yrs. Kottke listener here, and one who is unmoved by the CD. I can't warm up to Gordon's reedy voice, and wish his electric bass sounded more acoustic, the better to blend with Leo's guitar, as on 'Te Veo.' Better still, leave out the clunky bass altogether on tunes such as 'Arko' and 'Strange' and let Leo play alone...

Composition gets stretched thin here, too. 'Strange' adds nothing to Leo's first version from his 'Guitar Music' album. Neither 'June' nor 'Whip' has enough substance or emotion to stand as a well-developed tune--just noodling. 'Clay' is, in a word, bizarre. I can promise you, you won't clamor to hear it a second time.

Leo's unison vocal dub throughout 'Middle of the Road' is an odd choice; the lyrics are muddied by word flubs and general imprecision, while the bass is over-busy in back. (Yet the chord changes and bass drum accenting the chorus are the best twenty seconds on the disc. So just buy this one song for 99 cents online.)

Because Leo has amazed, delighted and inspired me for so long, I have continued to trot this CD out every 3 - 4 months and given it a listen, wondering what it is that I'm missing; thinking that maybe the "aha!" moment would come. Never has. This CD is a mistake. Not recommended.

An Amazing Collaboration.......2005-06-20

I've been a Kottke fan for more than thirty years. That may explain why I had never heard of Mike Gordon, until now. What a wonderful combination! Very witty lyrics, supported by fantastic musicanship, make this CD a creative masterpiece, in my view. If you want pure Kottke, this isn't the CD for you. But if your musical tastes bend toward the eclectic, you should hear this collection of slightly avante garde, but very entertaining, album of songs from two of the world's most creative and intelligent musicians.

A Clone Worth Having.......2004-01-01

A great collaboration! I can't wait to hear more. Kottke and Gordon make a great pair, an odd couple that have obviously found kindred spirits in each other, in their quirky song selection and lucid interwoven acoustic instrumentation. I feel Kottke is better off with someone to play against, keeping the sound more varied, and what Gordon brings to the mix with his wonderful songs, singing and bass sound is equally playful and new. Perhaps when the Gods clone their creations they come out as delightful recordings like this...I'm glad I got one.

Sometimes You Win..........2003-09-22

And sometimes you lose. Kottke is always pushing the envelope, never making the same album twice. He has tried lots of experiments over the years -- within the limitations of being a virtuoso guitar player who doesn't read music and rarely plays anybody's music but his own.

Sometimes his experiments shine ("Dreams and All That Stuff") and sometimes they bomb (Kottke with orchestra, which remains unreleased to this day).

"Clone" is in the latter category. Sure, it sounds like Leo and Mike Gordon had a lot of fun in the studio, but their two radically-different styles never gel. The material here is not vintage Kottke, and is probably weaker than Mike's usual too.

If you're new to Kottke, don't start here. This is for completists like me only -- and I've already played it all I probably ever will.

Very unique collaboration.......2003-04-15

I'm a big Phish-head and a bass player, but i'd heard a little Leo before and was aware of his history. This disc has a playful vibe, and features several very memorable tunes. I like the instrumentals a lot, but the highlights are the Mike-sung tunes. Anybody who likes Train song, Weigh, or Scent of a Mule will like this CD....

I rarely go on that site, but good thing I did when they had just recently reviewed this album and gave it a 5 out of 5. I thought...eeey, what the hell I'll see if this is any good. And...it is. It is amazing. It is...EXCELLENT.

I can't decide which song is my favorite because they are all so good. But one song does stand out..."Vibes, Sweat, What's That?". The first time I heard this I literally laughed out loud. You will understand once you listen to it.

So...buy this...NOW!!!

Amazing - Step away from the mirrored glass and buy this album.......2007-06-27

The only thing that equally makes this album as bright is Chris Cassidy's Vic Thrill videos on YouTube. If you have seen any of these, you will know they tend to be extrememly unique. But I'll degress to talking about CE-5.

I don't write reviews often. In fact this may only be my second review ever. I, like many, got into Vic through being a fan of The Bogmen. I have said for many years that Life Begins at 40 would be one of my top 10 desert island discs. It is easy for me to say this would have to be right next to it. Don't let me lead you into thinking Vic Thrill is simple extension of The Bogmen. CE-5 is extremely different from LB@40 and Closed Captioned Radio. I find each song takes on a life of its own to which the final result is hard to classify.

I get excited for Afrological -> Radar -> Cream running through my stereo just as much as I enjoy to step away from the mirrored glass during Wailing Wall. I challenge you not to sing the first line of Smeared without a smile on your face (though the first time you hear it you might question that statement). Great artist, Great album, and in the words of Bobby Frumbali, "It's good - You'll like it". As for Vicarious Thrill - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep your songs coming. Finally to Cass, thx for the visuals that support the music.

really cool stuff.......2006-04-17

More people should buy this album. Vic Thrill is fascinating. Very edgy, very New York. There's a cool profile of him and his buddy Curly Oxide on This American Life (NPR) that you might want to check out. Support local musicians. Sorry I don't have more to say, but I do say this is worth buying.

Leaps all genres in a single bound.......2005-04-23

Once upon a time in the 90s, there was a little band from Long Island called The Bogmen. This band of merry men, fronted by singer/songwriter Billy Campion, formulated a delightful brand of ebullient art-rock with a sardonic edge. Although The Bogmen had a very loyal, rabid fan base, they were never able to achieve mainstream success, toiling for several years in relative obscurity before finally calling it quits in 1998. Rising from the ashes of his defunct band, Billy Campion reinvented himself as Vic Thrill. He formed a new, eponymous band with the help of two former Bogmen, bassist Mark Wike and drummer Derek Finan, as well as ex-Garden Variety guitarist Anthony Rizzo, who adopted the pseudonym Saturn Missile.

Many Bogmen fans eagerly followed Billy Campion's transformation to Vic Thrill - a testament to his charismatic persona, considering that his current musical stylings are pretty far removed from his past work. Campion is like a modern-day pied piper, minus the bad intentions. Wherever this man leads you, you can be sure you'll be thoroughly entertained when you get there. Such is the case with CE-5, Vic Thrill's full-length debut. An entertaining mix of just about any genre you can think of, and probably some you'll have to make up, this CD will make you dance, laugh, think and leave you fumbling for words to describe it.

Though difficult to describe stylistically, CE-5 can easily be categorized as a blast of pure energy. Vic is a man who loves experiencing everything life has to offer. The joy that he projects through music is palpable, and you can't help but feel positively giddy while listening to this record. Vic Thrill is not just a cool name that Campion thought might look good on a marquee. He really embraces the idea of the "vicarious thrill", whereby listeners of his music are able to experience all the emotions that he puts into it.

The broad mix of emotions and influences that were used to create this music make it impossible to confine CE-5 to any one genre. While there is a definite focus on electronic sounds throughout this record, it's nowhere near the realm of Moby or Portishead, artists whose monotony and pretension perfectly illustrate why Electronica is often maligned. Vic Thrill overcomes those preconceived notions with music that is vibrant, witty and never boring.

Take the first track, "Hummingbird Pneumonia", which can only be described as a complete sensory assault. Even the most astute listener out there would have a tough time trying to identify all the instruments and effects that are present on this song. The music makes a sound in parts that actually conjures up images of hummingbirds flitting around. The vocals are achieved by layering many different distorted versions of Vic's voice over each other, resulting in what sounds like an extraterrestrial barbershop quartet. This song is the perfect introduction to Vic Thrill, because it packs all of their spirit, musicianship and technological expertise into a tight little ball that explodes when it reaches your ears. You'll never hear anything like this song on the radio and there is no mistaking it for anything else.

The rest of the songs on CE-5 seem to use that first track as a starting point, each one diverging down a different path, while still staying true to the space-age theme of the record. Songs like the title track and "Rebellion of the Cloned" are psychedelic trips to distant galaxies. "Wailing Wall" and "Afrological" are great futuristic rock songs with impossibly catchy choruses. "Living in the Love Life After" is Cake-style melodic rap, while "Smeared" is a ska-flavored adrenaline rush. The record closer, "Zero Odds", is a stripped-down slow burn that gradually swells to a hard rocking, guitar-driven release that ends the record 180 degrees from where it began.

Highlights of this record include the funk-pop epic, "Everything Here is Filled with Cream" and "The Williamsburg Strangler". The former begins with an extended musical intro, building with so many different sounds that your ears won't know what to do with themselves. Suddenly, a blazing guitar riff hits, and a pumping disco beat emerges that will make even the staunchest wallflowers get down. The latter is a hypnotic dance groove with a dark side. The serial-killer inspired lyrics give the song a decidedly menacing tone while the electronic choir, which sounds eerily like women screaming, is quite chilling. Still, it manages to remain accessible, thanks to a dazzling array of techno beats and Vic's ethereal vocals.

Vic Thrill's CE-5 is not just a collection of songs; it is a musical adventure. How this talented and strikingly original band has remained virtually unknown is a complete mystery. Perhaps, as another song suggests, "Nobody's Watching the Radar"? Well, start paying attention, folks. No doubt there are more thrills to come.

A Real Thrill.......2005-04-12

Sometimes the coolest music goes unheard by the masses. Such is the case with Vic Thrill, and it's a real shame.

Vic Thrill is a man (Billy Campion - vocals, electronic choir, drum machine) and his band, which is comprised of former members of the Bogmen and Garden Variety, two more bands nobody has heard of. Vic Thrill's sound pretty much defies description, but try eccentric pop, exotic alternative meets electronic or perhaps electronic cyber punk. CMJ called Vic Thrill "a big top on acid vibe." I prefer to think of it as what life might be like if you visited Las Vegas' Circus Circus on some serious acid.

In early 2002, the band released their first full-length CD on their very own Circus Clone Records. The disc, CE-5 (which stands for close encounters of the fifth kind) was produced by Robbie Adams, who is known for his work producing Smashing Pumpkins and U2. It's a surreal real gem. If you like a mix of the odd, obscure, and painfully hip, check out Vic Thrill.

On a weird side note, Vic Thrill (the man, not the band) may hit the big screen. Apparently SNL's Tina Fey is writing a screenplay - Curly Oxide and Vic Thrill - based on the true story of Oxide, a Hasidic Jew, and Thrill, who meet and form a band. Lorne Michaels will produce. Weird indeed.

Amazing amazing.......2005-01-24

This music is incredible. It's like nothing I've ever heard before. It wakes up some part of my brain that's never been awake before. Totally addicted with no hope of rehab and I LOVE IT! I am so freaking excited that it will get awesome publicity now that Tina Fey is writing a movie about Curly Oxide and Vic Thrill. I believe the response will be huge. Now quick! Get on the wagon so you can be all smug say you listened to Vic Thrill before the movie even came out!

From the start he was witty, sarcastic and ahead of his time!.......2005-12-01

Steve Taylor got my attention (and became an instant hero) when I first heard his music on a Christian countdown radio show. He was unlike anything in Christian (or secular) music and was a breath of fresh air. Way ahead of his time musically (one of the first white people to "rap" on a record, for example), and all over the map, this album gave a taste of what was to come.

What really set him apart was his deep, and clever lyrics. At a time when CCM had turned into a sickly sweet, "Jesus loves me and life is perfect" lie, Steve was brave and stupid enough to tell the truth and say that "the emperor has no clothes". He didn't just "preach to the choir", he preached AT the choir. He lambasted and ridiculed fakes and phonies inside and outside the church. He took on fake Christians keeping up appearances, rigid legalists squeezing new Christians into their mold, panderinging politicians, the newly emerging negative "rap culture", "liberal" Christians cheapening grace and declaring "all things permissible", people running the "rat race" who didn't know why, the reality of death and more, all in a 6 song EP! He told the honest, sometimes ugly truth in a snappy way. Even this early on, no one could "turn a phrase" like Steve. And though much of his later work is more well known, and maybe not so 1980's sounding, THIS IS STILL MY FAVORITE from Steve.

It is amazing this rebel, or should I say MODERN DAY PROPHET, survived, and almost thrived for awhile. He made me feel that there just might be a place in God's kingdom for a believing but disillusioned smart-elick PK like me. 20 plus years later, I'm still telling the truth to saint and sinner alike and pointing folks to the truth of Jesus. Thanks Steve. May the frustrated idealist in Steve and us all never die (this side of heaven) and may he give us some new musings in lyrical form either on his own, with the Newsboys, or with someone else! Whether he's being a roaring lamb or roaring at the lambs, we need a new word (though the old words have aged well and need to be reheard).

P.S. HEY CHRISTIAN RECORD COMPANIES, WHY NOT REISSUE THIS CLASSIC, SO POOR PEOPLE LIKE ME DON'T HAVE TO SPEND $50 FOR IT?
