Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, Totally F**ked Up) isn't much of a director. His films have ranged from amateurish to emotionally shallow. But the music has been the one point of interest. Splendor, billed as a "freewheeling sex comedy about a trio of LA twentysomethings," includes an atmospheric blend of Brit-pop, shoe-gazer rock, and electronica. Some tracks (Chemical Brothers, Armand Van Helden) are straight from their respective albums, while others (Slowdive, New Order, Chapterhouse) have been remixed to create something new and to help the tracks segue without the discrepancies of style and age. You're forgiven if you don't immediately recognize, say, the House of Love's "I Don't Know Why I Love You," moving to a caffeinated quick step courtesy of an Atlas remix. Or imagine Blur's "Beetlebum" remixed by Moby as a millennium-ending doom ballad. But finally there's some sign of life from My Bloody Valentine, who shows up to remix Lush's "Sweetness and Light." --Rob O'Connor

My teacher started using these CDs in our classroom while we did some thinking and meditation exercises and I couldn't believe how relaxed I felt surrounded by 30 people. The vibes in the room were amazing and I immediately asked her, after class, what the CD was and where she had gotten it.

She showed me it was the Tamboura CD and said they were all available on Amazon. Now I have the Chanting Om, Tamboura, and Tibetan Singing Bowl. Each are wonderful and I highly recommend them!

This CD inparticular has a perfect rhythm to it, which is wonderful for meditation.

"The 'Deep Meditation' CDs are wonderful. I played the Tibetan singing bowls in my yoga class during meditation and my students loved it."
-- Alicia Johnson, Yogi Times Business.

"New Age is one of the most challenged genres to produce music that stands out, moves and inspires. However, "Music for Deep Meditation" taps into the most simple, most basic energies of the life force and attempts nothing more than to help its listeners ground and center in the heart." CD Baby

"A must have for Meditators. The finely crafted recordings bring to life the sacredness and power of soothing primodial sounds"
Stress Free Living Magazine

"I love the CDs! I've been playing them alot at the beginning of class to get people settled in, especially the OM one. At the end of class I use them for meditation and final relaxation. All of my students love them."

-- Kristin McGuee, Yoga teacher and star of MTV Power Yoga and Pilates videos

"...one of the best meditation CD's out there." YogaLife Magazine

"I love your "Chanting Om" CD so much I'm going to feature it on the FRONT PAGE of CD Baby for a few days.
We're REALLY picky about what goes on the front page. We get about 100 new albums a DAY coming in here now, (about 100,000 total), and yours is one of the best I've ever heard."

5 out of 5 stars Puts you in touch with a very special place inside.......2007-03-30

This is a fascinating recording mainly for it's simplicity.

I have been an avid meditator for many years I always loved the sound of the gong. And I find that this recording really is inducive for meditation.

True meditation music should turn you to the space of the heart, it should still and focus the mind.

The bells remind me of the meditation retreats I have taken with venerable Buddhist meditation teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. The bowls were played during meditation but also throughout the silent retreats I was fortunate to take. Every time I hear the sound, it reminds me to take a pause and breathe with ease.

I am not sure what kind of singing bowl they used for the recording but sounds like one of those authentic
7 metal singing bowls. You can generally tell the difference by the tone and the quality of the ringing.

Traditionally the 7 sacred metals a singing bowl are made of:

1-Copper (Venus)
2-Gold (Sun)
3-Silver (Moon)
4-Mercury (Mercury)
5-Iron (Mars)
6-Tin (Jupiter)
7-Antimony (Saturn)

Tibetan legend says that iron was sometimes replaced by metals from the heaven, where meteorite was
sometimes added.

In my experience, the sound of the Tibetan singing bowl is so awe inspiring because it is such a primodial sound, like the ocean of the clap of thunder.

The vibration created an exquisite space inside, but the space is not empty but full of calm and joy.

4 out of 5 stars Great except for the feedback........2007-06-14

I really enjoy this CD, and have listened to it regularly since purchase. However, several minutes into the first track, a noise starts that really sounds like feedback. It's harsh and a little irritating, but not intolerable. One thing to consider is that I've been listening to this on a poor quality clock radio/cd player. Perhaps it is unnoticeable when played on better equipment.

4 out of 5 stars Really, really nice CD.......2007-06-08

This CD is really nice, helping to enter deep meditative stages. I particularly like the second track, which adds music to the traditional chant of OM, but both are beautiful.

There's one word to describe all three of the CDs that you sent us for review. Hypnotic.

We've listened to all of the CDs in a variety of settings.

Chanting Om is our favorite. We've played it on multiple occasions as low background music during work hours. It's soothing and rhythmic and transports the listener to a relaxed state.

It is also a fabulous CD to play while doing yoga; it helps keep you focused while holding poses.

Whether during meditation, yoga, or work, these cd's are perfect for anyone looking to achieve a state of peacefulness.

5 out of 5 stars Ordinary life is pretty complex stuff.......2007-01-06

American Splendor is a unique movie that actually mixes in the subject character in real life (Harvey Pekar) with the actor playing him. Giamatti's portrayal is a better performance than he put on in "Sideways". The music (snappy jazz) is outstanding and I highly recommend buying the soundtrack on Amazon at a very good price (I paid $7.99).

Don't buy this movie if you like a lot of action or suspense in a movie. This is not that type of product - it is more like a documentary mixed with humor, drama, and fantastic dialogue. The extras on the DVD are pretty entertaining as well, especially the hidden one featuring Toby Radloff and the actor portraying him.

4 out of 5 stars In answer to J. Hendricks question about the guitar player........2005-02-07

The quitar player on "Ain't Nobody's Business" is believe it or not-John Schofield. Its from the great album "Last of the Blue Devils" which was originally on Atlantic Records and was reissued on the Koch label.

3 out of 5 stars American Splendor song available on amazon.com.......2004-11-20

For those of you looking for the title song of the film "American Splendor," the one sung by Eytan Mirsky in the scene in the theater, check out Eytan's new album, "Everyone's Having Fun Tonight!" here on amazon. The album also features Eytan's newly recorded version of the title song that he wrote for the film "Happiness" (previously recorded by Michael Stipe). Great new album.

5 out of 5 stars the reason for the confusion with Miles.......2004-10-13

Some folks may be convinced they hear Blue in Green because there was a clear intent to write a knock-off of it, as well as of the tune Freddie Freeloader. Very well done knock-offs indeed.

Great movie, great soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack to a great film.......2004-08-25

The song American Splendor is NOT the title track to this film. Yes, it does share a title with this film, but I have always understood that the title track for a movie was the song that played DURING the opening titles. Therefore the title track would be Paniots Nine, which is CLEARLY on the CD. (Anyone looking for the American Splendor song will find it on the DVD as a free bonus item.)

Nobody seems to mention the bonus items that come with this CD. It features comic book style liner notes which are written by Harvey Pekar. The American Splendor movie site and DVD both feature a wonderful screensaver. This CD gives you the same one along with 2 extra screensavers. (One shows the liner notes comic book and the other shows American Splendor comic covers.) You also get the exclusive AIM icons, a comic book, cover gallery and web links.

The biggest bonus of all, for me, is music I may have never discovered without seeing the movie. This CD is a very interesting collection, from the avantgarde jazz tracks to the obsecure pop selections. (Even the original film music holds up pretty well without the film.) I normally don't like to pay $14.99 for a single CD, but this one was worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Review(How original huh?).......2007-01-25

Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)

5 out of 5 stars Music that transcends simple meaning..........2006-07-16

Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-11-05

Jim Morrison meets Led Zepplin, two great tastes that don't always taste great together. This album sounds like they wrote new lyrics to old Zepplin tunes. I mean track 8 sounds exactly like "Ten Years Gone".

I like The Tea Party for their own work, they don't need to borrow.

If you bought this album and loved it you might want to consider purchasing a "best of" Zepplin CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic beyond all compare........2004-10-05

I bought this back in '94 and it was a staple in my car's tape deck (heh) for a good six months following. I've picked it up again over the years and I'm listening to it again today (digital format, of course). I have to say that this album is timelessly superb. I would assert that if do not like this album, then you don't like rock. Yes, it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars amazing album.......2004-05-10

This album is amazing. "Winter Solstice" is a musical masterpiece and "In this time" has beautiful lyrics. The Tea Party's lyrical content based on mythology is very interesting. This album is definately one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic rock.......2004-04-26

This album got me hooked on Tea party, and I was hooked early. This early Celtic folk rock effort was awesome, it matured some more with the next album, and then in Transmission we see the real polished Tea Party sound. In this first effort Tea Party were still evolving as songwriters, and this "roughness" shows, but hardly subtracts from the songs because they are just very good regardless.

5 out of 5 stars Best debut ever.......2004-02-02

It's scary to think this band had never had a commercial album before this one. It's so amazingly well put together with none of the teething problems you'd usually expect in this sort of album. It's also very different to where they later went with their music - Splendor Solis is above all a blues and 70s rock album, fitting in quite seamlessly with Led Zeppelin, The Doors and many such bands of that era, while not coming off as a derivative work. My personal belief is that music has gone in a consistent direction since the 70s, and the innovative rock bands of today (Tool, Tea Party, John Butler Trio, Radiohead, Muse etc) have mostly gone back to the change point and taken it a different route.

My favourite tracks are Midsummer Day, Winter Solstice and Haze On The Hills/Majestic Song (which are really one song split across two tracks). Winter Solstice and Save Me are different takes on the same musical theme, but they tend to bundle Winter Solstice with Sister Awake from Edges live.

Album Description

Simple, haunting, magical, such words are often used to describe the simple but powerful sound of the tamboura, an ancient stringed instrument from India. The sound of the tamboura has the power to still the mind and bring the attention to the heart. Its hypnotic drone is the perfect accompaniment for your meditation practice.

This high quality recording captures the sound of a single tamboura in its unaltered simplicity. A must have recording for any serious meditation practitioner.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good repetitious meditation music.......2007-07-07

This CD wasn't what I thought it was going to be - it is a repeating line over and over from start to finish, with no variations.

That being said - the deep vibrations seep in and evoke a "meditative state". The lack of variation is actually good because it isn't distracting.

The music seems to be done electronically, instead of by the actual instruments, however that isn't really a negative.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, a bit boring for me.......2007-05-13

I am not sure if this sound is looped electronically but I enjoy more movement. This sounds like a great background instrument to me. For meditation, I prefer silence, nature or something more melodic and less monontonous.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!! My favorite of the set!.......2007-04-09

There is one word to describe all three of the CD's. Hypnotic.

The Tamboura works great for yoga.

We also shared tea with friends and played this one in the background and it kept the atmosphere very serene.

Whether during meditation, yoga, or work, these CD's are perfect for anyone looking to achieve a state of peacefulness.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT Tamboura CD!.......2007-03-28

People who don't like this CD, clearly do not understand the art of meditation and yoga and the journey to inner peace and relaxation.

This CD is incredibly soothing, relaxing and everything you could want. I'm a big fan of the other two CDs in this series, but this has become my favorite. The Tamboura music on here lasts for OVER and HOUR and ten minutes! Compared to most other meditation CDs that only last 20 minutes. The makers of this CD clearly recognize the fact that it takes some time to get into the trance and mood of meditation. I meditate for about an hour, and the last thing I want to hear is some CD changing tracks. It pulls me right out of the moment. But with this CD, that's not a problem!

Into meditation, yoga, or not, this is just an excellent relaxing tool to listen to. If you're stressed, or feeling overwhelmed with life...sit in your favorite chair, or lie down, and just listen. Before you know it, you'll stop thinking about work and other problems of stress, and you'll find yourself lost in the sounds of the tamboura.

EVERYONE should own this CD. Who doesn't like to be relaxed?

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Santorini sounds.......2007-06-21

"Santorini Splendor" is a New Age revelation of sorts. While many New Age artists rely on synthesizers, "Santorini Splendor" is beautiful, natural and spartan with its emphasis on the flute, guitar, and natural sounds of the Aegean sea. While most New Age music is of an Eastern, Celtic, or electronic flavor, this album highlights Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, in all its serene splendor.

The songs flow naturally into each other, like the tides. It evokes the serene white buildings gazing onto the wine dark sea and the blue sky above. Its simplicity is as relaxing as a warm bath. The electric keyboard is unobtrusive; the sea melds naturally with the songs.

This is a perfect introduction to New Age music, as well as a perfect companion for Putumayo's "Greece: A Musical Odyssey."

Album Description

The dervish's whirling is a meditation—communion and contemplation—set to music; the calm center of a spiritual cyclone. Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation captures the music that drives this resplendent and timeless practice. Serpentine ney (flute), melodic santoor, impassioned singing and ancient frame drum form a hypnotic rhythmic engine, building in intensity and carrying the listener to whirling ecstasy. Recorded in India's Ishvani Kendra monastery, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation features seasoned musicians, masters of the sema'a (Sufi ceremony), performing this irresistible music that propelled the original trance dancers. The Persian mystic poet Rumi, founder of the Mevlana Dervish brotherhood, wrote, "…Music uplifts the soul to realms above. The ashes glow, the latent fires increase: We listen and are fed with joy and peace." Immensely enjoyable for straight listening, truly indispensable for inner exploration, Sufi Splendor: Music for Whirling Meditation places the listener at the tranquil heart of that latent fire.

This CD is okay, but I don't find it as transformative as I've found other Sufi music, which sadly I do not know the names of those artists. The singer has a lovely voice and the instruments are well played but it definitely did not put me in the required state for whirling meditation which I have experience elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Sensual and uplifting.......2004-07-25

This wonderful CD combines the sensual beauty of the middle eastern rhythyms with the uplifting, entrancing spirituality of the chants. Each of the three long tracks builds from a simple beginning, increasing in tempo and passion. This is a wonderful CD for meditation, particulary active meditation (the whirling of the title, dance, etc.). I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Sufi traditions and/or middle eastern music.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Collection of Piano Solos.......2003-04-19

This CD is a joy to listen to. Kostia is a Russian pianist who has created a highly melodic and accessible disc. It is the perfect backdrop for other activities, but stands up equally well to concentrated listening.

Kostia's music is quite classical in sound; the nearest other composer of such music I can think of is Liz Story. His technique and skill are very evident from the first track to the last.

There are many personal favourites, but "Sunrise" is a particularly beautiful composition that perfectly captures one of nature's most glorious events.

Top-notch recording quality, as one would expect from Narada- but frustratingly they have allowed this to go out of print.

It is well worth tracking down. A very highly recommended CD.

5 out of 5 stars Undescribable beauty and wonder.......2000-12-04

Once in a long while you might have heard some tunes that appeal to your subconsciousness and you yearn to listen to it over and over again. I first heard Secret Garden over the radio and this piano piece simply clicks and moves in me. Give me a thousand chances and I will still pick Konstantin Efimov (if it is his real name) as the best pianist contracted to Narada Lotus. Neo-classical in style, but definitely appeals to mainstream audience like me. Since then, it has always been a dreamy experience to play Secret Garden in repeat mode everytime the sun sets.

5 out of 5 stars Alert for piano lovers: this recording is a must-hear!.......2000-07-15

My only complaint with this recording by Kostia is that it's too short - I wanted more! This is evocative and emotional music, relaxing and contemplative. Winter Ride is brilliant, vivid and distinct; you can hear the sleigh bells and feel the light snow on your face. Reflections is simple and quiet, not necessarily sad but certainly thoughtful. Kostia is a superb pianist, and a highly talented composer. And don't make the mistake of labelling his work "new age" and figuring you've probably already heard everything he has to offer - this is =not= everyday new age. Kostia's music is very distinctive, and every bit as complex, dramatic, and engaging as Chopin or Rachmaninoff. Piano fans, give this a try; I guarantee you'll find something worth listening to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........1999-08-24

This is the best New Age music I have ever heard. It's a cut above the bland instrumental pop that dominates the genre, combining classical and jazz influences on a good Steinway piano, along with memorable melodies and intricate arrangements. The music ranges from calm and peaceful, as in Secret Garden, to fast and exhilarating, as in Winter Ride. Reflections is particularly influenced by jazz, while Building Bridges is very classical. The cello playing on Warm Stones is beautiful. It certainly does evoke the unfaded majesty of old Europe. Kostia sidesteps the pop melodies used by other New Age pianists for understated, subtle beauty. While it offers nothing really knew, it is a wonderful time capsule of many musical pasts we have now abandoned. I haven't heard his other CD, 10 Pebbles, yet, but I intend to get it as soon as I can.

3 out of 5 stars Where are all songs?.......2006-08-30

I'm agree with the previus review. But there is a explication: the music that Vocalion launch on the reissue is axactly as appear for European market, by Decca. For us, in America, London made some different covers and different songs. It's a pity that 3 songs were "killed". And where are the "bonus tracks"? I suppose that they have (in the master tapes made in England) all the songs.

3 out of 5 stars UNCONCIEVABLE!!!.......2006-08-10

Dissapointed!!! As I happen to own the original LP version of The Latin Splendour of Werner Muller, I inmediately noticed that this album's part of this compilation lacks the album's three best tracks: Light My Fire, The Girl From Ipanema and Mais Que Nada. Where are these tracks, then? In what Vocalion album will they be avaliable, and when? These tracks were left out on purpose: Notice that the composed cover uses the On the Move album art to conceal the Latin Splendour track listing, on the right side of the cover. But Why editing the best tracks? This is nuts, unconcievable! I will have to transfer them to CD from the original LP for archival and enjoyment purposes, then. Vocalion oughts more respect to their products buyers, as we, in our vast majority, are record collectors, and music connoiseurs. This is the first mistake of this magnitude I have noticed in the Vocalion reissues, though, but collectors have to be more skeptical about compilations to come. Nevertheless, this album is a good buy, because the London Phase 4 Catalog was almost extinct, something absurd, being London Phase 4 one of the great examples of the use of Stereo techniques as they developed in the 1960's. And now, with the Lounge Revival, London Phase 4 Stereo needs to be rescued and played and enjoyed again. London Phase 4 is a landmark in the record industry, and shall be respected as it is. No more senseless messing with these Instrumental masterpieces.
